Newsy Bits: Morena Club, Comic-Con 2008

I haven't done newsy bits in a bit, but there were a couple things that I thought I should post:
****
There was a robbery at the Morena Club on Sunday. Story here.

*****

To further negate the rumors that ComicCon will be moving, there's this press release (courtesy of Jay Allen Sanford of the SD Reader):

"Hard Rock Hotel San Diego has been secured through Travel Planners Inc. to host the 2008 attendees from two of the largest lifestyle and entertainment conventions in the country - Comic-Con International and the Action Sports Retailer (ASR) tradeshows. Through its partnership with Travel Planners Inc., the host travel agency for Comic-Con and ASR, Hard Rock Hotel San Diego has arranged for 300 rooms during each event, as well as space for private media events associated with each convention."

Looks like we can count on another year of mayhem (or four, since the U-T reported that there is a contract to keep the Con in San Diego through 2012).

Welcome to the World, Beautiful Girl

My sister and Billy checked into the hospital around 6 and were admitted at 7:30. Nearly 12 hours later, and 3 hours of hard pushing, a team of doctors came to welcome Johanna into the world with a suction assist.

Johanna Bystrak Kiernan
July 30, 2007, 7:25 pm. 6 lbs, 13 oz.

As you can see, she's already a rockstar.

I'm already so in love.

Things to Do: July 30, 2007

Fact: Hospitals do not have free wireless access. I spent 12 hours in the L&D room today without leaving once, so this is the best list I could do without the Internet. I'll get Scolari's, Zombie, Beauty Bar and whatever good things I can scour on the net. Send me your listings if you don't want me to have to search too far and wide.

Monday, July 30, 2007:

  • Anti –Monday League featuring The Pricks, Microphone, Addiquit @ Casbah
  • Tears for Fears @ Humphrey’s
  • Guru’s Jazzmatazz, Genius of Soul, DJ Sancho @ Belly Up
  • Rush @ Coors Amphitheater
  • Tony Sheridan (played with the Beathles) @ Joe n Andy’s (8344 La Mesa Blvd)
  • Electric Waste Band @ Winston’s
  • Mind Eraser, Bitter End, Scapegoat, Joyful Sounds @ Che Café
  • And The Furies Hour, Chris Schlab, CJ Boyd @ Scolari’s

Johanna Is On Her Way!

I'm going to make every effort to get my Things to Do list posted today, but I'm not sure about hospital rules. Contractions are 2 minutes apart and I'm on my way down there now.

Saturday Night, Pt 3: San Diego House Party

I learned two things about San Diego this weekend. First, San Diego proper has a no alcohol sales after midnight ordinance and second, that the 7-11 in Golden Hill sells liquor (unlike most which only carry beer.) I made the detour to Golden Hill, figuring that the party would be low on booze and to fill my little shoulder cooler. I arrived after the bands were done as did a whole boat load of people wandering in from the Casbah show and other area bars that were closing. As always, it was a great party. I'll let the pictures tell the story.

I'm also not above posting ridiculous pics of myself:

Clearly it was a fun house party and thankfully no visits from the popo. It was almost 5 am before I set on my way. It was nice to sleep in and lounge around the house all day. Kristian came over and set up my music and iPod stuff on this computer and I am so grateful to him for it. Thanks for the tunes, K! Now, once again, I look forward to a solid night's sleep and prep for another big week in San Diego.

Satruday Night, Pt 2: Maximo Park @ The Casbah

I arrived to the Casbah around 11:30 and finally relaxed a bit, bouncing back and forth between the show and the patio where so many of my friends were hanging out. As promised, Greg Padgett sent me a great review and Dave Wong-Toi sent me pictures, so I make no apologies for just letting myself loose.

MAXIMO PARK w/ MONSTERS ARE WAITING AND THE OOHLAS
SATURDAY, 28 JULY 2007
THE CASBAH
by Greg Padgett

Back in 2005, with U.K. rock buzz bands Franz Ferdinand and Bloc Party already riding a wold-wide wave of notiriety and fellow U.K. bands like The Futureheads and The Kaiser Chiefs nipping at thier heels, a Newcastle band named Maximo Park quietly released their excellent full length debut album "A Certain Trigger." Even though the the album and their live shows gained tons of crititcal praise, the band stayed relatively under the radar in the two years that followed. That could defintiely change with the 2007 release of their outstanding sophmore effort "Our Earthly Pleasures". It is one of the best albums of the year, chock full of irrisitably catchy pop-rock gems that will stay in your head for days. And judging by their sold-out show at The Casbah Saturday night this band definintely seems poised for that big-time breakthrough. Taking the stage around 11:30, on a sweltering night at the The Casbah, the band, led by highly energetic frontman Paul Smith, opened with "The Coast Is Always Changing" from "A Certain Trigger"; which seemed appropos for this region of the U.S., since we live on a coast that most sages and soothsayers say will defintiely be changed one of these days. Over the course of the next hour, the band ripped through a set that was heavy on songs from their latest release, standout tracks such as "Girls Who Play Guitars", "Our Velocity", "Books From Boxes" and "Parisian Skies"; with a few great songs from "A Certain Trigger" mixed in: "Apply Some Pressure", "Limassol" and "Postcard From a Painting". As the show went on, it seemed that the oppressive heat in the building just engergized the band and crowd even more, and by the time the band played its last song before the encore, "Signal and Sign" from "A Certain Trigger", the crowd and band was whipped into a frenzy that I personally havent witnessed at The Casbah in awhile. After a short break to catch their breaths and to allow us sweat soaked fans to gather ourselves a bit, the band came back for the two song encore, which consisted of "Sandblasted and Set Free" from "Our Earthly Pleasures" and ended with the raucous, fist-pumping, crowd favorite "Graffiti" from "A Certain Trigger." It was the perfect song to end a memorable, sweat soaked, adrenaline filled show, that I will not forget for quite some time. Those of us who were fortunate enough to be there hopefuuly got to witness something special; the inevitable rise of Maximo Park.
Opening the show was the powerpop indie rock band The Oohlas, which included former Everclear drummer Greg Ecklund on vocals and guitar. The band played an energetic set with songs from their excellent 2006 debut album "Best Stop Pop." Following them on the bill was L.A. indie rock band Monsters Are Waiting; who played a few songs from their own outstanding debut full length album "Fascination"; along with an absolute stunningly mezmerizing cover of The Stone Rose's "I Wanna Be Adored.". Their lead singer, Annalee, joked after the song that the band had just written that song the night before. All jokes aside, if this band keep up the momentum from their first record, there is a real good chance this band could concievalby write songs just as classic as "I Wanna Be Adored". Here's hoping they do. The only gripe I had about the night was the short set they played (just 7 songs), but with three bands on the bill and the time constraints, it was understandable. This was one of the best shows I've been to at The Casbah in awhile, the energy of the crowd was great, all the bands killed it, and the atmosphere created during the Maximo Park set absoluetly electric. Thanks,Casbah folks, for bringing this great and memorable night of music to your great venue!

Thanks for writing Greg! And here's the pics from Dave:

Saturday In San Diego: Pt 1 Comic-Con

I was a little bored on Saturday because Kristian pushed back our day. I thought we'd be at the Con most of the day, but instead, we went arrived at 5, which ended up being fine. We parked at the place he was housesitting on Cortez Hill and walked to the Trolley and caught it over to 12th and Market. The walk to the Convention Center, though short, was unbelievably hot. I look forward to more of the trees on that side of downtown filling out and actually providing a shadier and cooler walk. As far as I'm concerned, the trees should be the first thing that go in on any new development.

Fortunately since it was so late into the Con, there was no wait for his badge and we entered the floor. We decided to play a "spot the biggest dork" costume, but once inside, it was just overwhelming. I get the Star Wars costumes, the creepy movie characters, but the Rocky Horror Picture Show costumes? Dude, you're 250 pounds and I don't need to see your hairy ass in hotpants and fishnets. Really. Anyway, we wandered the hall and spotted this little gem:

So geeks can get their toy fetish on, now with breasts! If I was a collector of anything, I might've bought the Wilco statues, but I'm not and I didn't. Doesn't mean it wasn't really cool.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

The guy at the booth told us that 1000 sets were made, Wilco got 250 and they were selling the other 750, and it is possible that if they find the right band, they might do more band sets in the future.

It was fun to bump into friends...seeing Randall (Kleeman and Mike), and seeing Jamal and Ruggy, Nathan at the Bongo booth and stuff, and I didn't really expect to get stoked on any celebrity sightings until I saw Henry Rollins at the IFC booth. I wasn't so much starstruck as intimidated because he's a pretty intimidating personality, but I was stoked to have seen him.

After a full back and forth through the hall, we decided to bail and get dinner, fighting through the throngs of people attempting to leave ComicCon to find the next thing.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

We went to Dussini looking for Kristian's friend but she wasn't there, so we decided to catch the trolley to Old Town for some grub at Old Town Mex. I got my favorite, the steak azteca and we sat at the bar to avoid the almost 2 hour wait. After dinner (and a pitcher of margs), we trolley back downtown. I met Ken Kramer ("About San Diego", NBC) and talked to him for a bit while we waited for our transfer trolley back to the Convention area. We went back to Dussini to meet K's friends, had a drink, then caught a cab to the car in Cortez Hill, picked up a friend from Parkhouse, then they dropped me off at home. By that time, it was nearly 11, and though I wanted to get to the show, I had to take a shower and get the downtowniness off my skin.

Friday Recap: Red Feathers, Old Man Hands, Ghost Buffalo, The North Atlantic, Swedish Models, The Muslims

I wish I had more time to write earlier, but it has been a busy, busy weekend. I'll recap as much as I can before I have to get some sleep.

My Friday night started at the Whistle Stop. I was really excited to see two bands that I haven't seen in some time. Red Feathers started the night and killed it. They sound so vocally strong and the bar was packed with people for the show, though the usual chatter on the bar side of the wall was a factor in the general buzz and energy of the night.

Lately I've been finding myself loving bands that switch it up between vocalists and instruments and Ref Feathers is no exception. I finally met Marco (thanks for the CD!) and it was nice to finally talk to him since we've been at the same place at the same time so many times before.

Old Man Hands was up second and I can't ever say enough about them and the talent of Gabriel. His voice can melt anyone and the accompaniment of keys, guitars, violin, mandolin, drums, bass just gave such a full sound. This was the most people I'd ever seen play under the Old Man Hands moniker, since when I have seen them in the past it's been at tiny spaces where they play more stripped down. There were moments that I felt amazement in the way I did the first time I ever saw "The Last Waltz."

Toward the end of the set, LaTaunya Lockett sang a song with the band and jaws were dropped. Get that girl a record deal, my god. Her soulful voice was a beautiful compliment to the band.

They finished a little after 11 and though I would've loved to see the Modlins, I had to mosey on my way. I hadn't been to Black Box Studios before but had no problem finding it and getting in via the alley. There were a lot of people there and I was impressed how overall, the crowd hanging outside was quiet and respectful to the neighborhood. It's obviously ideal, too, because of the studios sound proofing, that you couldn't hear the music at all from the outside.

The only bummer for me was that the show ran really late. I caught a little bit of the touring band, Ghost Buffalo, and they musically had a rockin vibe and lead by a female vocalist whose vox was somewhere between Jewel and Anya Marina, but the backing band kept her from sounding too folky.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

After they finished, I hung outside with Kasey for a while then with Dave who had me cracking up. I was actually surprised to run into anyone I knew there, to be honest. By the time The North Atlantic started, it was nearly midnight. I had never seen them play before but it was a great performance that had the room packed (and really freakin hot). The crowd clearly loves the band and were singing along to most of the songs.

Unfortunately, I was at my tipping point and the crowd and heat became a little overwhelming added to the fact that I had to get myself home, so I left about midway through the set. I made my way back to Kensington and walked to the bar to find that show was also running very, very late. I was able to catch the final couple songs of Swedish Models.

It was 1:30 bar time when the Muslims finally took the stage and they played right up to the lights on kicking everyone out of the bar moment and a good amount of people stayed to watch them finish.

I was after anti-party since I had a big Saturday planned, yet somehow I ended up staying up pretty late loading all the pics up till I finally shut down and shut out calling it a great Friday night.

Sometimes Its All About Outsourcing

made it to the Maximo Park show just before they started, completely missing the openers and whatnot. It was kind of a wild day. At the end of the night, my friend Dave handed me a setlist asking, "do I have to do your job for you?" And the truth is, I was unwinding and happy to be at the sold out Maximo Park show at the Casbah, but there was no way for me to smuggle myself up for pics and Natalie and Dave seemed to be doing so well that I was just taking the whole night easy. Then I saw Greg who agreed to write up a review and voila, I was off the hook from being a responsible blogger.

So check back here for a review of Maximo Park from a real fan, Greg; pics from camera-in-your-face Dave, the Setlist that Dave snagged for me, and a shitload of pics from completely non-show related moments. Because sometimes, those are the best ones of all...

FYI, Filter sent me posters for the show but forgot to mark them Saturday delivery. So they'll arrive on Monday. Hit me up if you'd like one and I'll somehow make sure you get one.

I hope everyone's Saturday was as awesome as mine was. Sunday will be a pajama and internet day for me and I can't wait to be the laziest girl in town...

Rumor: Comic Con 2008 in Vegas?

Update: I'm gonna trust Eric on this one and call the rumor just that...a rumor, and likely a false one at that. Thanks for the comment, e! And here's the link to the story in SignOnSanDiego.

original post....
So Tania (SoundSoundSound), and subsequently CatDirtSez, have posted rumors that next year's Comic-Con will be moved to Las Vegas. I just wanted to weigh in that while LV might have a bigger convention space, who the fuck wants to go to Vegas in the middle of July, when the average temp is about 115 degrees, and do the whole 'wait-in-line-wearing-a-stormtrooper-costume' thing in Vegas? I think it is just a really bad idea, through and through, and hope that if the Con is really moving that the organizers really reconsider such action. Most people can barely handle the Con at the size it is, if it grows further, it will be more task than fun destination. Is that really what it should become???

Things To Do In San Diego: July 28, 2007

It was posted on the punk board that I excluded a band from a show and I wanted to say for the record that I create my "things to do" posts on Sundays or Mondays and compiling all the shit takes me about 6 hours (unpaid, I might add). If a band isn't on the venue's list or on the various flyers out, I might not post them, but I'm easily accessible and will post all shows that I find or that are sent my way. My e-mail is on the right if I neglected to post your show.

My sister is very likely to go into labor this weekend which makes my plans very tentative, but my Saturday plans include lunch and Comic-Con with my dear friend Kristian, the Maximo Park show at the Casbah, and some late night after partying at the San Diego House Party girls' home. Thanks to everyone who came up and introduced themselves tonight and made comments to me about this little ol' blog I've got, it definitely means a lot to hear positive comments and to meet the people who take the time to read this site. xoxo...and on to the listings...

Dappled Cities: Vision Bell (YouTube Clip)

So yeah, I went out tonight and accomplished my goal of making 3 great shows. Thank God for rock n roll and the inevitable late start for bands, because I got to see Red Feathers who were amazing, Old Man Hands who seriously make me cry the good cry on the inside, then Ghost Buffalo and the North Atlantic at Black Box Studios (which thankfully I remembered the whole 'enter through the alley' thing), then Swedish Models and The Muslims at the Ken Club.

But before I went out, I found the time to upload video from the Dappled Cities show. And I admit, I was such a dork to wear the shirt out tonight, but I guess it was good advertising because I got so many comments from people who had gone to the show and agreed that the show was amazing beyond expectation and also a number of people asking about it and regretful that they missed it all. The bottom line is Dappled Cities has to come back to San Diego soon.

Anyway, I'm sorry for the crap lighting but the sound ain't half bad and I thought it good enough to post this video of Dappled Cities performing "Vision Bell". If you can't handle the lighting, just turn it on and troll the web while listening...

I'd like to dedicate this post to Natalie because at the end of the song he's doing the little birdie noises that were getting us all hot and bothered. Yeah. Fan? Blogger? Or Groupie?

Tackling Friday Night

So I came up with a plan to manage my Friday night and all the great shows happening tonight.

First stop will be the Whistlestop from 9-10:45 for whomever I can see of The Modlins, Old Man Hands and Red Feathers. From there, I'll head over to BlackBox Studios for The North Atlantic (Cullen's last show!) who are supposed to play around 11:15. And if I time it right and the show goes late as always, I'll finish my night at the Ken Club for Lights On and maybe The Swedish Models if I happen to make it in time.

If I could be everywhere, I would also recommend Pop Noir at the Beauty Bar, and the good punk lineup at Chaser's (certainly that show will get shut down. I'd like to know if any good barfights breakout, especially those started by the employees.)

It's gonna be a good night in San Diego...but first, nothing makes me happier than the food coma I can feel coming on from the lunch I just had at Ponce's with the beverage of the summer, a Tecate Michelada.

Life, sometimes, is sooo good.

Thursday Recap: Tokyo Police Club & Dappled Cities

I honestly don't even know where to start with this post because last night was such a great night. A little after 8, Andrea came to my house with friends Nathan and Jacob, both in San Diego from LA for Comic-Con. We had a pre-drink and hung out until it was time to head to the Beauty Bar. We got there close to 9 and there was a line of about 30 people outside. Natalie let us know that the doors hadn't yet opened and we could hear Dappled Cities sound checking inside. We went to 7-11 and dallied a bit and the when we came back, the line was twice as long and nobody had been let in.

I was "working" this show, so I called the tour manager Al, who came out and met us. We chatted and then after a few minutes the security came out and told everyone to form a second line for ticket holders, starting from exactly where we were standing. We breezed right in and had our run of the bar until everyone behind us started filtering in.

In the patio, Al introduced and Natalie and I to the band, who gladly signed a couple CDs and posters for us and for giveaways. It was clear from the get go that
Dappled Cities (Fly) is made up of some of the nicest guys around. Maybe Natalie is right and I'm a little gun shy from the whole BoH things, but it's meeting a band like Dappled Cities that reassures you that the old model of asshole rockers doesn't fly in the biz these days.

Anyway, I'm talking to Tim from Dappled Cities and he asks how I like the record (I love it) and what my favorite track is, which totally caught me off guard because it occurred to me that since I usually listen while I'm sitting in my yard working on the computer and the CD is playing inside from my house stereo, I haven't once looked at track titles. What kind of music blogger am I?

Anyway, they played an amazing set. Like while it was happening, Natalie and I could hardly contain our fan-dom. I am a huge fan of Gomez, and one of the things I love about them is that they vary who takes the lead vox on songs, making every song feel different while still having a cohesive album, and the same can be said about Dappled Cities. Tim's ability to alternate between a falsetto and regular voice is amazing...on the CD I actually thought that Vision Bell was sung with shared vocals but it's all Tim.

They started their set as people were still filtering in, but midway through the set, the patio and the dancefloor were packed. The band played a full set and had me dancing throughout. Yes, you read correctly. I, me, Rosey, was dancing.

I'm supposed to be a fan first, blogger second...but sometimes both get tossed out the window when I turn into groupie crazy girl. Tim kept looking at us up front and when he looked at me while singing the final line of Holy Chord then laughed as he attempted to sing the final line: "What does it mean to take off all your clothes and look into your eyes and say I mean it." "That was sincere," he joked sarcastically. Didn't matter to those of us loving their set. We believe he meant it.

Dappled Cities Fly Setlist, Beauty Bar San Diego, July 26, 2007

I was so completely happy with the show that it could've ended just then for me. But add the topper that Tokyo Police Club was yet to play and it was just that much better. I love TPC, and to me their performance was exactly what you'd expect when hearing their music. Kinda fast, dancey, and a shit load of songs, but none really lasting longer than two minutes, which in a bar, feels like 45 seconds. Andrea was fixated on the energy of they keyboardist who was impressive and energetic throughout the show.

I had a DD on this night? Did I mention that? Because it made an impact on my overall consumption for the evening. Somehow I made it to the bar and back to my spot, but not without some hisses. I've seen the Beauty Bar crowded before, but not like this where the patio was packed and the dancefloor was packed with people trying to see the stage, and there was hardly anybody lingering by the bar. On other crowded nights, I feel like there is still always ac rowd 6 people deep mobbing the bar, but everyone was there for this show.

After the show, we hung around for a while. It was fun hanging with fellow bloggers...Natalie (It's Too Sunny...), Mario (SanDiegoish), and Mandy (reelMandy). Also, I have to say, I'm so used to going to shows alone...arriving and leaving on my own whim, so it was nice to be with such an accomodating group of people. So here's some pics of my homies...Andrea, Jacob, Carey, and Nathan.

When we did finally leave, we headed to the Ken to finish off the night and we went a little nutso with the camera.

Nathan revealed to us that he is the son of Mark Hamill. Yes, that Mark Hamill. So yeah, you guys can have Comic-Con...I was hanging with Luke Skywalker's son :) And I am of course only writing this because I told him in my state of vodka-ness "I'm sooo gonna blog that."

Anyway, an amazing ending to an amazing evening, once again, and the weekend looks to get better. Thanks to the Jacob for driving, to Filter for the tickets and CD (to show my love I bought a shirt), to Al for being so open to us, and to Dappled Cities and TPC for an amazing show.
