Slow Down!

unfortunately, the killers crew has come down with some pretty mad variants of pneumonia and gastorenteritis in the last few days. i'm holding my breath when i sleep on the bus.

the madison square garden show was a success, the vampire weekend boys came out as well as diddy who i didn't have the shock and awe of meeting. after playing the garden, you'd think that every show afterwards would be a huge letdown.

not so, because....

the south is rad.

i saw my first 24 mph speed limit sign today along with my first anti-obama, "nobama," bumper sticker on the road. it is certainly an interesting place. smoking indoors, drinking at noon, country music. life is grand.

along with the obligatory jambalaya at the myrtle beach house of blues, there was a closed alligator farm in the back where we tried to and unsuccessfully feed the sequestered gators.

fat matt's bbq in atlanta that i forgot to take pictures of.

i'm in nashville today and it's been quite the adventure. at the crack of 9 i was out looking for starbucks. an hour and a half later, i was lost and still caffeine-less after hacking my way, indiana jones-style through the jungle that is the opryland resort and mall. ran into some strangers from livenation who took me to downtown nation where i had a beer at tootsie's, paid homage to the original ryman, visited my favorite print shop, the hatch show print, and went guitar hunting. and today, bolo equipped, i'll be playing fiddle onstage at the opry.

it is truly a charmed life i lead.

send me good thoughts and vitamin c.

California IOUs

With all the Obama-mania I haven't posted much in the way of politics lately, but I still have an Arnold "Total Retard" shirt in my closet, and with the governor's latest plans for California, I just might have to wear it again.

Motley Crue Giveaway

In catching up with e-mail and realizing that there's a whole bunch of good stuff to come in 2009, even when the Casbah anniversary month ends, I thought it was time to start looking to February. With shows like The Bird and The Bee and Obi Best at the Casbah to bands like Dead Confederate and Devotchka at the Belly Up, it's clear that bands are back on the road again gearing up for SXSW or festivals or just taking advantage that gas prices are back under control (for now, anyway).

One band hitting the road and making their way to San Diego is Motley Crue. They'll be at SDSU's Cox Arena on Monday, February 2nd with Hinder, Theory of A Deadman and The Last Vegas. While I unfortunately don't have tickets, I do have some Crue swag on it's way. If you'd like to enter, tell me any Motley Crue story (tkeep them factual) and I'll choose two winners. Tell me how you got in trouble for sneaking out to go catch them live, they were your first record, that you dressed like them for halloween, whatever. I'll choose the winners at random.

The first place winner will receive a pick guard signed by the band.

The second place winner will receive paperback copies of their New York Times bestseller, The Dirt and Heroin Diaries paperback and Saints of Los Angeles on CD.

Send submissions to sddialedin via gmail. Include a contact number so I can notify the winners.

Ticket Giveaway: Fiction Family

Fiction Family, the project from Jon Foreman of Switchfoot and Sean Watkins of Nickel Creek, are giving away a pair of tickets for their San Diego performance at Anthology on February 6. Click the widget to register for going.com and to enter the contest.

Casbah Tuesday: Don't Miss Ryan Bingham

Tuesday night there's a show at the Casbah that I highly recommend checking out. It was a late addition to the anniversary month shows but is no less worthy. The show features four performances all worthy of checking out. The show will likely start at 9 pm so don't be late.

Gray Ghosts will be performing their second show ever, and features members of Kite Flying Society, The Ex-Friends and more. Also on the slate, Swim Party is performing and we know how much SD:DialedIn loves and supports those guys. Pyles can't stop talking about The New Archaic- he said they're all young and under 20, and apparently the guitarist is amazing and tours with The Adolescents. Rounding out the bill is Ryan Bingham & The Dead Horses, a Lost Highway artist.

From the press release:
Ryan Bingham is an American alt-country singer and songwriter. Raised in rural Texas, where years of hardscrabble ranch work and competitions on the rodeo circuit would eventually surface in the dusty riffs of his country-styled debut, Mescalito. Living alone since his mid-teens, Bingham shuttled back and forth between Southwestern border towns and relatives' homes, often sleeping in his truck after nightly rodeo gigs. It was during those treks that he began entertaining friends with the guitar, an instrument he'd learned at the age of 17 from a mariachi neighbor. You can hear the inspiration of Bob Dylan, Marshall Tucker, and Bob Willis in Ryan's music.

You know I'll be there, hope to see you there, too.

YouTube & Free Download: Bell X1

Bell X1 have been getting a lot of attention in the U.S. after quickly become loved in their native Ireland. They have an album coming out in March on Yep Roc Records. Unfortunately they've only planned a few east coast tour stops in the spring, but perhaps they'll tour more extensively later in the year.

"How Your Heart Is Wired"

YouTube: Cary Brothers covers Ryan Adams' "Come Pick Me Up"

You might've caught Cary Brothers last year on the Hotel Cafe Tour as it passed through San Diego. He's got a new album in the works for 2009 and played a couple dates this month in NY and LA, and put together a video. Included in the video is a cover of Ryan Adams' "Come Pick Me Up". I love it and decided it was worth a post.

Things To Do In San Diego: Lux Art Institute

I am sorry about posting tonight's "Things To Do" listings so late and I'm hoping to work on the rest of the week tonight, but in the meantime, I'm trying to navigate through the month's e-mails and found a press release for Lux Art Institute and since it has my favorite word "free" in it, I will repost the release here.

ENCINITAS, Calif. – (January 14, 2008) – Art lovers and their families are invited to Lux Art Institute’s “Free Saturday” on January 31. From 1 – 4 p.m. guests will enjoy an open house with free admission, studio tours, refreshments and live music. Admission will be free all day on Saturday, 11 a.m. – 5 p.m.

The afternoon will give visitors a chance to meet Lux resident artist Jolynn Krystosek. A mixed media sculptor and painter from New York City, Krystosek will create a large-scale, 8’ by 10’ paper collage in the Lux studio during her residency. The piece will begin with drawings, which will be projected on and cut from various layers of thin rice paper. The cut papers will then be layered over one another and be adhered to the wall. This process creates a rich, layered installation with shadow and texture.

Lux Liaisons will guide tours through the studio and Krystosek’s exhibition of large-scale, sculptural paper cut-outs, wax floral relief carvings, and watercolors of exotic birds adorned with real feathers.

Lux, San Diego’s interactive art destination, is dedicated to encouraging children’s artistic curiosity through Luxcursion (classroom fieldtrips to Lux,) the Valise Project, (portable museums presented to schools throughout San Diego,) Summer Camp, and Family Day.

Lux Art Institute is located at 1550 South El Camino Real in Encinitas. Parking for “Free Saturday” is in the Sanderling-Waldorf School parking lot and in posted parking zones along El Camino Real.

Lux hours are Thursday and Friday, 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.; cost is $10 for two visits. For more information visit www.luxartinstitute.org or call 760.436.6611.

Now if Encinitas could move a little more south for those of us who hate to drive...

FM 94/9- Now on your iPhone!

Check out this nifty little press release I got from my friends over at FM 94/9:
FM 94/9 is pleased to announce that listeners will be able to access a full station stream on their iPhone or iPod Touch. In an ever-evolving world, FM 94/9 continues to innovate as the first station in San Diego to offer this technology to its listeners. The App puts FM 94/9 directly on the iPhone desktop, instead of being buried in a list with hundreds of other radio stations. With one tap of the finger, a listener can easily stream FM 94/9 anywhere they have wireless internet access, even when out of the range of the terrestrial signal.

“We are excited to be able to provide this new listening application for FM 94/9 listeners. As a radio station that strives to be on the technology forefront, we believe that this will be a great way for our local San Diego audience to be able to take FM 94/9 wherever they go using the most popular mobile device,” said Garett Michaels, FM 94/9 Program Director.

Anyone wanna buy me an iPhone?

Uncle Joe's Big Ol' Driver, Ken Club, 1.22.09

Last night Uncle Joe's Big Ol' Driver played a warm-up show at the Ken Club in preparation for tonight's Casbah show and it was really amazing, in part because I realized it was probably the most intimate show I'd ever seen them play since every other time was back when I was underage going to Soma, World Beat Center and the like. They played from a general list of all their songs, at times laughing, "That sounded too tight, let's play one that we'll fuck up," and they kept the crowd laughing when every time they'd say "Thank you, San Diego!" in big rock star voices, they'd launch into riffs from Stone Temple Pilots for comedic effect. The other notably funny part of the night was when a friend of the band yelled out "Peaches" and Andrew McKeag, of Presidents of the United States responded, "We'll play that shit. It will cost you $1500, but we'll play it." They didn't, of course.

As for me, I had intended to make a streak of the Casbah shows, but since Louis XIV had their own merch people, I decided to break the streak so I could walk to my local haunt for the show. And then didn't even feel like drinking. Go figure. UJBOD just finished their Casbah set and once again gave me an ear to ear smile. Tonight is a very good night.

No Knife Posters Are Here!

Dave Lively did it again and hand screened another batch of posters, this one for tonight's No Knife, Creedle and Uncle Joe's Big Ol' Driver show at the Casbah. The show was the first of all the anniversary shows to sell out so tonight will be pretty nuts.

I'm gonna try to post some UJBOD pics from their show last night at the Ken Club while I'm here, but I just got 9 dozen new Casbah Anniversary shirts that I need to organize, so we'll see if I can get to it. And frankly, it's Friday nigth and I love these bands so I might be away from the merch table at times tonight. We'll see how that goes, too.

Also, for those inquiring about the Three Mile Pilot posters, you can contact Dave through his site, and tell him which night(s) you're looking for and he can give you a cost and method of payment.

i'ma get you sucka

so i forgot to get deep dish pizza in chicago. STUPID.

it's shocking to me how many people dislike it, chicago style pizza that is. the main gripes seem to be that, "it's too much, it's too much like cheesecake." this from crew guys who i've seen devour entire new york style pies like they were cookies. that's the best part about chicago style, you get everything you want in one slice. and who doesn't like cheese? oh boy it makes me miss lefty's on 30th.

ok, ok, so i've little to report as far as food is concerned the last few days. an interesting goat cheese mashed potato aside at chicago catering on inauguration day, i've not been pulling my weight. still, i have the light at the end of the tunnel in the form of my favorite lamb and rice street meat in nyc and poutine in toronto.

in other news...biggest loser comes to the killers crew! will keep you posted as baby, fiddy, potato, cleaux le foie foie, breuning, lew lew, and bleep all vie for the title of killers biggest loser by losing the most percentage of their weight by the time we hit australia in april. as official judge, i'll be making odds if anyone wants to bet on their favorite.

fortunately, the ping pong table is back. my skills have diminished significantly since the last i saw it in australia when i toppled flowers, the king of pong in killersland. my forehand is shaky but my backhand has been demolishing all comers. flowers took me out 21-18 a few nights ago but we have plenty of time left for me to redeem myself. everyone plays and has a different style, from fiddy's sidespin to rob's gorilla style and brandon's extreme focus.

four and a half words for flowers. "i'ma get you sucka!"

toronto today, msg tomorrow!

The Undercarriage: Classy Wednesdays

There is nothing better than spending over half a month standing on a smoking patio nightly and then being invited to come in for a facial. Seriously, I am so grateful. Today I spent an hour at The Undercarriage getting a Pumpkin Peel/Facial from Malinda and it was a.ma.zing. to say the least. It's part of their special pricing on "Classy Wednesdays" (20% off for new clients with the add from CityBeat) and if I'd actually eaten before I went in, I might've taken her up on her offer for champagne before my appointment, but decided it was a good day for detoxing. Regardless, I haven't felt so relaxed in a very long time and I highly recommend stopping by. They offer facials, massages, and waxing for reasonable prices and your indie ears will be pleased by the iPod of beautiful Radiohead, Bright Eyes and other great tunes. Tell them you saw it here, on SD:Dialed In. Click their site for more info.

Think Good Thoughts

I have debated whether I wanted to write about this for a couple weeks but I guess it's time. My dear friend Joe, whom I've known since junior high, was involved in a hit-and-run accident a couple weeks ago so I just wanted to give an update. You might know him as the drummer for The Roman Spring, to me he's been a great friend for many years, and I think he'll probably kill me for even mentioning this because he's the most unassuming person I know and does not like to be the center of attention whatsoever.

He and a friend were walking home near El Cajon and Texas and were hit by an oncoming car which fled the scene. He and his friend had similar injuries; a broken leg and injured shoulder, and she broke a bone in her neck. They are both doing well, she was released from the hospital a couple days ago and he's hoping to get out in a couple days, just waiting for some of the swelling in his leg to go down after surgery to place a titanium rod in his leg. He's been in high spirits every time I talk to him and the couple times I've dropped by (though he's definitely over hospital food). As for The Roman Spring, they're recording and fortunately he'd already laid down his drum tracks so the album is still coming together and should have no delay. His recovery may take a couple months but I wish him a speedy recovery and know he'll be back better than ever.

As for the driver, she allegedly turned herself in the next day. Send positive thoughts their way. If you are a friend of Joe and would like information on calling or visiting, please e-mail me directly and I can get you in touch with him. As for Joe, I hope he doesn't kill me for giving the update.

Three Mile Pilot Poster Series #3

This is the third and final poster from Dave Lively for the Three Mile Pilot shows. I've almost sold out of the first one, and expect a rush after the show. They even refilled the ATM so people can get cash for merch.

Three Mile Pilot Poster Series #2

Here's the second poster from the Three Mile Pilot poster series. Last night's show was incredible despite minor food poisoning or something that made me completely ill. I sprung back and have enjoyed listening to Christmas Island, Calico Horse and Kill Me Tomorrow from the patio. Three Mile Pilot will be taking the stage any second now and the crowd is waiting anxiously.

Posters are $20 and available at the shows.

Three Mile Pilot Poster Series: #1

There is no way for my photography to do this poster any justice, but here's the first of the Three Mile Pilot poster series. They are hand screened and numbered and available at the shows for $20.

These are, like the Casbah posters, designed by Dave Lively. You can see more of his work at Beach Ball of Death.

"You've Been Good Long Enough!"

After a chilly week of rehearsal in Vegas, staying at the legendary (and in dire need of demolition) Tropicana, the Killers have kicked off, as Pitchfork put it best, their gigantic and ever growing world tour in Denver yesterday. The tour schedule is only one of many things still growing for these lads.

Internationally chart-topping new album.
Check.
Bigger and badder, tiger striped, island themed, video wall equipped, pyro shooting, bubble bursting set.
Check.
Three tour buses and a how's-that-for-your-carbon-footprint fleet of six big rigs for equipment.
Check.

Again, referring to Pitchfork, it looks like I'll be all over the US, UK, EU, and OZ with the Killers for the next few months. One mild new year's resolution I'd like to keep is to blog more for SD Dialed In.

Let's begin.

As is usually the case, trying new food is the best part of touring. In Denver, a few of us stopped by the Buckhorn Exchange, supposedly Denver's oldest restaurant. Its specialty, game meat. Big game meat. The decor is, at first, alarming with an overwhelming variety of game trophies, everything from armadillo to zebra. I felt like I was at a taxidermy seminar. After alligator, rattlesnake, and duck appetizers, we followed up with buffalo, elk, ostrich, quail, and yak entrees. As a meat lover, I was in love. Especially with the elk. There's so much more to the world than just hamburger.

We had a warm up show in beautiful Boulder where I finally understood why so many kids from Torrey Pines decided to go to there. The monitor rig exploded halfway through and the crowd got a truly intimate moment with just Dave and Brandon singing into the room with a springtime-in-the-quad version of "Tidal Wave," a B-side on the new album. Yesterday in Denver, I suppressed my urge to stop, drop, and roll like they taught us in elementary school in order to preserve the rock-ness of the show even though I was convinced that I was on fire when they started the pyro show directly over my head during the encore. I ran as fast as I could off the stage to pat myself down. I'm fine, by the way.

So, today, I'm in Minneapolis after a 15 hour bus ride, complete with the requisite I-80 Iowa Truck Stop food run, enjoying the last night I'll have a hotel room to myself for a while. After Minneapolis, then Chicago and on and on like it says on Pollstar. One week away from Madison Square Garden! It's, like, totally dancer!

Casbah Photos: Furious IV, Olive Lawn, Radio Wendy, The Old In Out, 1.12.09

It's hard to say that I have a favorite show of the Casbah Anniversary series, because the music has been blowing me away on a nightly basis, but since this show was an Anti-Monday League on top of the great lineup, it definitely stands out. It also helped that I was able to catch some of the show and Ian of Furious IV had especially bright lighting which made it fun to take photos. Plus that's the night I met Rob Schneider which you have to admit is pretty cool.

First off, photos from the patio:
