Gomez Coming To San Diego This Sunday!

Gomez is coming to play the San Diego House of Blues this Sunday, August 2nd.
The band is back on a US tour in support of their latest release, A New Tide. This is their sixth studio release -- and the one that scored the band their highest chart debut in their recording history. Billboard praised the record, proclaiming that it is "a brilliant 11-song collection of lyrical jewels embellished by colorful and unusual
textural arrangements." Paste also applauded it, saying that it is "Catchy, quirky... Gomez's most experimental."

A little something extra about this particular show-- it's going to be a very special (RED) Night. Artists participating in these concerts (Gomez now included as one of them!) will have portions of their ticket sales go to the (RED) campaign in their efforts to eliminate AIDS from Africa.

Every time I've seen Gomez they are amazing. I realize that proceeds from this show go to charity, but if you're broke like me, you might wanna try buying some tickets through one of LiveNation's various offers on cheap tickets, like the one they have with Citi Cards, no service charge Wednesdays, or try using Subway $5 Tickets.

Trashcan Sinatras, Casbah, 7.28.09

I had the good fortune of catching Trashcan Sinatras for the second time in a little over a week and was once again blown away by the band. I spoke with Stevie (the keyboardist that borrowed my bottle opener last week) before the show and we chatted about their trip to Japan. In Scotland, he manages a clothing store, so this trip was his first ever to the west coast, and Japan, he said, was incredible and completely nerve-wracking. He showed me pictures of the crowd and I could see what he meant. There they played the Fuji Rock Festival, so we should feel lucky to have the band back in our 250 capacity venue.

Unfortunately I didn't get a setlist because some dude grabbed it (despite the tour manager telling me I could have it), but I will say they didn't play anything of Cake once again. It was ok, though, because how can you complain about a set over an hour and a half? I took a few photos that ain't worth shit, so I'll just post the videos from the night.

These Days Comic-Con Recap

Yesterday I was invited to call in to These Days on KPBS to talk about some of the Comic-Con parties. Sadly I went on and on about TruBlood that I didn't mention the Vice Party with Gwar, the Tweetup, or the Totally Rad Show meetup that I also had the fortune of attending, but you can listen HERE anyway.

This Week: Trash Can Sinatras At Casbah 7/28/09

Last week, I had the pleasure of seeing Trash Can Sinatras at Coach House in San Juan Capistrano. It had been about 4 or 5 years since I last saw the band when they toured on Weightlifting and played at Cane's, and to me they sounded great as ever. The show was a bit of a preview before they played a festival in Japan. They return to really kick off their U.S. tour here at the Casbah on Tuesday night.

A few long time fans we spoke with felt the show was a little awkward, but personally I liked that you could see the band getting comfortable onstage with each song, and even admitting that they were nervous. There were some extended breaks in the music, a couple that involved Stevie the keyboardist borrowing my keychain to open some Stella bottles for the band, which got some laughs from the maybe 150 people in attendance.

I really like the new album and know that I'm excited to catch the band again this week. There's a Paste review here. Check out their site here.

We met a couple great guys at the show, too. Chris is from Mission Hills and sent me the setlist for those that are curious:

I wish you'd Met her
Easy on the eyes
Send for Henny
In The Music
Prisons
Stare Into Space?
Got Carried Away
I Hung My Harp
People
Easy Read
All The Dark Horses
Should I Pray?
I've Seen Everything
Oranges and Apples
Morning Star
Weightlifting
The Engine
How Can I Apply
The Safecracker

Comic-Con Photos, Part 2

So here are the bulk of my remaining photos from Comic-Con 2009. I had such a great week and met so many cool people, I can hardly believe it's already over. I definitely look forward to 2010.

One of the coolest things I saw that I actually thought "I want that", was Mind Flex. The game uses concentration to raise and lower a ball as you work it through an obstacle course. You can check it out here. I think it will be available in October.

I was able to get out on the media patio and catch some photos of the leads from District 9, Peter Jackson's new film. He was back there, too, but he was being interviewed and took a long time moving down the line. The media patio was cool- while back there I saw Tyrese and a few other celebrities, but I didn't have any luck getting back there on Saturday. I did bump into Jimmy Fallon (literally. He was fast walking opposite me and I grabbed his arm as our paths crossed.

One of my favorite parts of Con were the True Blood Happy Hours held at Prohibition and Bondi. They also had a couple at Rock Bottom, but I didn't make it there, but "Eric" was rumored to have made an appearance. These are from Friday when I met Erik and Petro at The Field and thanks to Vince at Prohibition, got back into the happy hour with ease. I wasn't really big on most Con swag, but I definitely was into the True Blood stuff...pint glasses, Fang Banger American Apparel v-necks, and then on the last day TruBlood drink...which I'll get to in a sec.

On Thursday I sat with a couple strangers who were press and we all chatted for a bit. (They were the ones who told me about the media patio) Eventually they left and I invited some people to join me. This is how I ended up meeting Jared who was in town from Seattle, and the next day his friends Joe and Caleb, also from Washington, and they ended up being my Con buddies. After we hung out again on Friday at True Blood, they took me to a Totally Rad Show meet up at Tivoli. We bumped into the hosts, and despite the line, they walked us in and we hung out there for a while.

More if you click 'keep on reading'.

I met a guy who had OCD and freaked about how close I set my beer to the edge of the panel. We joked that we should be engaged and he gave me his ring and he showed me his Dungeons and Dragons die.

So my five minute fiance. From Tivoli we went to Phi, a rooftop patio bar at the new Hotel Indigo. It was nice and quiet and away from the chaos.

I went back downtown on Saturday and didn't catch much of Con. I kinda felt I was wandering in circles before I went off to eat, then attempt the True Blood party at Bondi. The boys were there again. I wasn't gonna wait in line, but ran into some friends and it ended up being about 20 minutes before we got in and I was a total swag whore. In addition to giving everyone a bottle of TruBlood, there were TruBlood and Skyy drinks with take home pint glasses, more Fang Banger shirts, bags, books, journals and more.

As the party winded down, I walked to Chee-Chee, met up with Jake, and we went to Soda Bar to see a band that ended up not playing, so we caught Swim Party at Beauty Bar, then wandered back to Soda Bar where the Seattle boys met up with us one final time.

That was the end of Con for me, as Sunday was spent at Kate Sessions park for my niece's second birthday party. And then I slept. But not enough. I might go back to sleep now. Thanks to everyone who had a part in making last week an amazing one!

    Comic-Con in Pictures

I think I read somewhere that Comic-Con was expecting over 150,000 people this weekend. Of those, probably 149,999 have cameras. Everyone has pictures and you can already find them all over the web. Here's a handful from my Con experience thus far.

    Comic-Con: Herds Of Nerds

I shot some video as I was leaving Comic-Con last night and thought I'd share. If you're averse to crowds and people, this is definitely not the event for you.

    Ryan Bingham, Casbah, 7.22.09

After Comic-Con preview night and the tweetup at Voyeur, Jake and I made our way to the Casbah to catch Ryan Bingham. Last time Ryan played San Diego, I was working merch and didn't really get to see much of the show. I also caught his set at Coachella, but at a festival like that, it's hard to separate fans from passer-bys, so I was happy to see that Ryan had a well-deserved following, not to mention a handful of superfan groupies. This time around I got to experience the full set in all it's glory. I took some mediocre photos but thought I'd share some video from the night.

    Street Scene Daily Lineup

Street Scene is just around the corner and the daily lineups have been announced in conjunction with the sale of single day tickets. Most of this is not new to you, however, because I already had most of the schedule broken down here back in June. With respect to Beastie Boys being added then canceled because of MCA's cancer diagnosis, there is no word yet on if there will be a replacement headliner. Comic-Con Preview Night

Yesterday I braved the madness that is Comic-Con. This year's passes sold out months ago and even so knowing, you never really realize what kind of crowd to expect. I had planned on going downtown early, but I was actually pleased in arriving at 4 with plenty of time before the preview doors opened. The line for pre-registered professionals and media was long but the bonus about geek culture is that they're REALLY efficient and in about 15 minutes I had my badge. Then I wondered, what do I do now??

Naturally I found a spot on the floor and opened up my laptop to take advantage of the Google sponsored free wi-fi. That was fine until the Elite security started clearing the floor area, so I moved upstairs to wait in line with Jim. He told me there were three main lines and we were at the front of one of them. I still don't understand the lines to be honest, but I guess there are certain booths with exclusive collectibles and giveaways.

People were in such a frenzy, it was hard not to get caught up in it. I'd see a line or a mass of people and 3 minutes later I'm the owner of a District 9 t-shirt or a Twilight bottle opener. Or a ginormous Harry Potter bag. I even stopped at a booth and got my picture taken to look like I was caught on fire. I imagine the reusable grocery sized bag from TheBloodFactory.com is gonna get some looks next time I'm at Trader Joes.

But then what? I'm not in the market for Star Wars figurines, I haven't played a video game since Super Mario Bros., there aren't really any shows that I'm obsessed with that would make me fight people to grab some memorabilia, and I've probably watched 5 movies this entire year and none of those is of the action/summer blockbuster/must-see variety. Something compelling still makes me excited to be there.

    Maybe the Ugly Dolls?

    Or American mockery?

I dunno, but whatever it is, I'm heading back for more.

Incidentally, I only lasted 2 hours before heading to the tweet-up at Voyeur which was fun but probably only about 20% of the 500+ who signed up to attend actually showed up. It was good chatting with a few friends before Jake and I took off to catch Ryan Bingham at Casbah. I'll be posting some Youtube from that later; hopefully tonight.
