Friday Night: UCSD is the place to be

Friday, December 4th - The Moviegoers, Girls, We Live Inside, Beaters and more: A night of goodness at UCSD!

If you're looking for something to do to unwind after all that Thanksgiving madness, come up to UCSD Friday, December 4th for a night of art and music. First, stop by the Visual Arts Facility to see the first-year MFA group show, We Live Inside, at the VAF Gallery just off Russell Lane. A reception will be held from 6 - 8, and The Moviegoers are playing a free show in the Performance Space at 7:30. So come grab a drink to start out your night! It's FREE!

Next, you can head off to The Loft to see Girls, the righteous San Francisco indie rock group and SPIN magazine's best new band of 2009. The show starts at 9 and The Morning Benders will be opening. $10 advance, $12 at the door (UCSD students: $5 or pay as you can at the door)

If Girls isn't up your alley, or you want to try and do double duty, you can wander over to the Che Cafe because they've got a full night of music lined up. Abe Vigoda, Blessure Grave, Beaters, No Paws (No Lions), and The Preteens are all on the bill. $8, doors at 8:30, bands at 9.

WHAT: a rad night of art and music at UCSD
WHEN: 6 - 8 for a free art show (think free drinks), 7:30 for The Moviegoers, and 9 for other music/dancing
WHERE: UCSD (VAF Gallery, VAF Performance Space, The Loft, Che Cafe)
HOW MUCH: art show/The Moviegoers free, other shows $8-$12
PARKING: Gilman Parking Structure is your best bet, but if you are broke (or some kind of fitness nut) you can park on Villa
La Jolla Dr. (or other places off campus) and hike it, but give yourself extra time of course.

NOTE: If you're really into experimental sound/video/performance art, you should come by the Visual Arts Facility Performance Space Thursday, 12/3 at 8:00 for 90 minutes of temporal works. Again, it's FREE!

Art Fag Fest

Congrats to contest winners Travis T & Jenn R for winning a pair of tickets to Art Fag Fest. Thanks to everyone who entered the contest! Tickets will still be available at the door at the Woman's Club. See you there!

Things To Do In San Diego: November 27-29, 2009

I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving and was able to spend it with family... whether by blood or friendship...I know I did and I'm so grateful for the friends I have. My Nana passed on Wednesday at 102 years old, which means the next week is going to be a bit crazy and I may or may not get proper updates in, as most of my extended family will be in town leading up to the funeral on Friday. For anyone interested in a preview, I uploaded a bunch of videos from The xx, Friendly Fires, Fanfarlo, Freelance Whales and more if you wanna check them out on my YouTube page. Otherwise, I'll eventually post them all here. In the meantime, here are all of the weekend listings. If I missed anything, leave a comment, shoot me an email, or send me a message via Twitter (@sddialedin) and I'll update. As always, thank you all for supporting this site. Words cannot describe how much I appreciate all of you.

Art Brut, Princeton, Northern Towns @ Casbah, 10.28.09

Let me just say from the start, there are some shows I go to because I really love the bands, and other times I go because I want to understand why everyone else really loves a band. The latter could very well explain my attendance at the Art Brut show.

Northern Towns kicked off the night. I suppose I'd call them Irish Punk, and reminded me of all those Boston Taang!! records releases that Curtis has given me over the years. They're definitely more of a Ken Club/Tower Bar band and I'm sure they tear up house parties, but it just wasn't what I expected for an opener for this specific show. Not an insult or complaint, just a little random.

The same can probably be said for Princeton. They're sweet guys, I've seen them several times, and I really like their pop tunes, but they seemed like a weird tour opener for Art Brut.

I guess the magic of all of that, is that when Art Brut hits the stage, you really can't imagine anyone that should open for them. I tried listening to their latest release and just couldn't make myself get past a couple songs. Still, there I was, front row with Natalie hoping to 'get it'. And holy cow, consider me converted. From the first note to the very last, I was entertained. Eddie Argos is hilarious, energetic, and with his stature and bravado, commangs the stage and the crowd. I was only going to grab a couple songs, but ended up just going with it... so here's a video; the rest are after the jump if you click 'keep on reading'. Again I had issues with the lighting, but their lighting was full on darkness to full power lights, and a whole lot of flashing in between, so hopefully you can enjoy these to some degree.

Land of Talk, Eulogies, Black Mamba @ Casbah, 10.26.09

You're thinking, "Hey Rosey! Your title would indicate this is a post about music, so why a picture of your niece?" The reason is simple. There was light. I have been having increasing problems with the lighting at Casbah and it's just not fun taking pictures there sometimes. So before the Black Mamba, Eulogies, and Land of Talk show, I spent the day with my family, with my uncle Willie who was visiting from Indiana, and frankly it's just cuter than anything I could've posted from the show.

It was actually pretty funny because I asked the sound guy if he could turn up the lights and he said that Aimee had requested them dim. Dim, not closet dark, I imagine. If you haven't yet seen Black Mambe, you should really remedy that soon. Aimee has a beautiful sweet voice and her onstage shyness is completely endearing, especially because it contrasts with her belting out her sweet melodies.

I encountered similar difficulties with Eulogies, who have the stage totally dark except for their retro photo slides that are projected onto the bass drum. I really love this band and I know I'm always talking about Dangerbird Records, but seriously, show me a single band on their roster that isn't great. Since photos and videos were a waste of time(and since I figured Natalie was standing right next to me shooting) I just enjoyed the band. They were showcasing music from their latest release, Here Anonymous, and since last time they were here, Peter wasn't feeling well, they could really get into the show a whole lot more. As did I.

Land of Talk was headlining the night and I was only slighly familiar with some random tracks, but knew of the Broken Social Scene connection and was looking forward to the show. Lead vocalist, Lizzie was quirky and quite funny in her comments between songs. Their Facebook bio says "Land of Talk is a female-fronted guitar rock juggernaut . They have been described as a destructive Stevie Nicks/Blonde Redhead mutant, Will Oldham meets Sonic Youth, and as a PJ Harvey-meets-Crazy Horse type creature," and I'm comfortable with that comparison. I didn't take photos of this band either, but I did shoot a couple videos, only because you could ALMOST see them onstage. Man, I have got to talk to Tim about those lights. Anyhow, enjoy the videos, at least the sound is decent. Here's one, the other two if you click 'keep on reading'.

R.I.P. "Monkey"

monkey

There's a very long winded story as to how in a little over a year, I went from having no pets to being the owner of 3 cats and a dog, but such has been the case for nearly a decade. It feels strange now to say that I only have two cats and a dog. My poor little "Monkey" has gone to the catnip farm in the sky.

It's funny how I found "Monks". I used to have to walk my dog really late at night when few people were on the street because she was particularly skittish. One night, we were almost home from a midnight walk when I spotted what appeared to be a skunk popping out from under the library. It in fact turned out to be a feral or abandoned kitten, cute in a silly "my head is too big for my undernourished body" kind of way. My first thought was, "Why me?". At the time I had one dog and one cat and I did NOT want to be the single girl with a small animal farm. But so it was. I took Pascha home, grabbed a towel and some wet and dry cat food, went back to the library and spent an hour coaxing this kitten out from her hiding space and brought her home. She was mine and I was hers.

When I took her to the vet, they estimated she was 2 months old but the proper weight of a 1 month old cat. I believe this early starvation had a huge influence on her being the piggy of my pets, always there as soon as I put food in the bowl, mewing incessantly anytime I was near the kitchen. I named her Kensington, for the library where I found her, but over the years she got many nicknames, Monkey, Monks, Kenny, and as the neighbors once called her, Hitler. (Which later lead me to CTLLH, though Monkey was rejected for not being Hitler enough) She was a sweet cat, but very mellow, occasionally jumping on my lap to knead, but mostly doing her own thing. I'd come home at night and she'd be spooning with Kiwi at times, but mostly respected the boundaries laid out by Pascha and Boo Radley, the more dominant of my animals and generally avoided my bedroom.

I'll skip the details of her death, just that she was noticeably sick for less than a week and went quickly due to liver failure. Naturally this breaks my heart, but in her own way, Monkey said goodbye. On the day before she passed, I was taking a nap and she slept with me. On my pillow. her paws on top of my hands, her body curled around my head. For the first time ever, she was on my bed and Pascha didn't try to kick her off. Monkey had a good life and my life is better for having known her.

o.m.g. New San Diego Music Project

This is really just too awesome not to post. You know Ben Johnson from behind the kit in Hostile Combover, or commanding the stage at the helm of The Long and Short of It...or maybe he's just that quiet dude behind the bar at the Casbah serving up the drinks that will knock ya on yer ass. Well, now, my friends, he's Grammatical B, and he and Microphone Mike recorded a hip-hop track that would still be hilarious even if it wasn't actually good. You can check it out on the MySpace page..."Do fries come with that walk of shame?"

Videos: Blind Pilot, The Low Anthem, Mimicking Birds @ Casbah, 10.25.09

I know it's really ridiculous how backlogged I am on posting all this stuff, but I've been to some great shows lately and I figure better late than never. Aside from having been looking forward to seeing Blind Pilot and The Low Anthem, even now, almost a month later, I can say this was one of my favorite shows in recent memory. The show sold out and I remember looking around and wondering how all these people knew Blind Pilot...tv placement? a movie soundtrack? the bicycle tour? I dunno, but definitely not a regular Casbah crowd, which is great, except for the fact that people were incredible chatty throughout both openers. I don't know if it's happening more at shows or if my tolerance is just wearing thin, but it is very annoying. Still, I tried to block it out.

The show started with a band from Portland called Mimicking Birds. At the time they reminded me a bit of Fleet Foxes, and after the show I chatted with them and they said their full-length will be released in 2010 on Isaac Brock's label, Glacial Pace. Between songs the singer shyly looked to the bar and said, "I'm sorry, we just have a couple more songs, but we'll keep it down so we don't interrupt your conversations." The crowd was so loud, I don't think they heard him. Regardless, I thought they were great and bought their EP and look forward to seeing them again.

I've been listening to The Low Anthem since I was given their CD late this summer, and it was their first San Diego show ever, and hopefully they weren't too discouraged by the noise factor to come back. It took about 5 songs for the crowd to actually pay attention, which was a bit of a bummer because they played their quieter songs early in the set and the louder more rockin tunes toward the end. Perhaps if they'd flipped their set around they might've grabbed the crowd sooner, but I think they were trying to play their record somewhat sequentially as it plays like a movie soundtrack.

And last up was Blind Pilot, who are simply amazing. There's something so gentle and fragile about the music, and while I'm sure they were happy to play to a sold out room, I would've liked if the crowd didn't take it upon themselves to make every song a singalong. I guess the testament to a good show is that I woke up for the next week with their songs in my head, especially "Two Towns". From interviews I've read, the band would like to do another bicycle tour, so hopefully they keep San Diego on their radar for the next tour, and maybe a Tuesday night show is better for fans to avoid the weekend warrior behavior that was prevalent in the room.

I recorded several songs on video. Here's one of my favorites from the night, the rest are after the jump if you 'keep on reading'. Also, if you're interested in reading a great full review of the show, check out the story on SDNN.

The Heavy & The Styletones, Casbah, 10.23.09

I skipped the Why? show on Thursday night at the Loft so when Friday rolled around, I was rearing to go. There were a bunch of things going on that night, too, but I was committed to catching The Heavy once again, as well as seeing The Styletones for their debut Casbah performance. It was a fun Friday- I definitely prefer loud shows on the weekend so the warriors can get a bit more rowdy, and the dancefloor was bouncin. I have to be honest that I definitely enjoyed The Heavy more the last time around, maybe because that show sold out. Following The Styletones made it hard, too, because The Heavy plays to tracks whereas The Styletones have a full horn section. Tough to fill the room with backing tracks, but I'm sure bringing a horn section from the UK just isn't cost effective.

You can see two videos from The Heavy if you 'keep on reading'. That night ended up being a really good one, hitting up Nunu's after the show where I ran into some old friends. I love nights like that.

Noah & The Whale, Robert Francis @ Casbah, 10.21.09

I already posted about Brand New, Manchester Orchestra, and The Builders and The Butchers at the House of Blues on October 20, so if I'm gonna do this sequentially, I'll jump to Wednesday night. While most of my friends were at the sold out Grizzly Bear show at Belly Up, I was more interested in Noah & The Whale and Robert Francis at the Casbah, but it was certainly obvious that the former affected attendance at the latter.

I'd been hearing a lot of buzz about Robert Francis, and after seeing him, it was obvious why. His hearttfelt songs were still gritty enough to give him an edge. The show was just a day after the CD was released and his excitement was palatable. This particular song struck me, and I was glad he'd taken my suggestion to turn off the fan.

I saw Noah & The Whale at Coachella and remembered being bummed that I missed most of their set, so for this show I was right up front to soak it all in, especially because their new record, The First Days of Spring, had been playing incessantly on my stereo since it's release on October 6. The band certainly delivered a stellar performance. They joked that they'd gone to the zoo while in town, but then were attacked by a Grizzly Bear, an obvious acknowledgement of the underwhelming attendance. It didn't matter, though, they still played an amazing set of music for those of us there to bear witness. I shot a bunch of videos and unfortunately the humming of the fan is a bit overpowering, but you can still tell how lovely a performance it was.

The rest of the Robert Francis and Noah & The Whale videos if you 'keep on reading'.

Videos: The Subjects, Bad Veins & Bear Hunter

It's been a while since I've written about any shows...it's been kind of a crazy month, but that doesn't mean I don't have a bunch of things to share so I'll try to knock out some posts today.

Reaching back to mid-October (October 19, to be exact), I was happy to catch Bad Veins at the Soda Bar. I've been digging their record out on Dangerbird and though they'd just played a little over a month before this particular show, I thought it was better than their first appearance at the Casbah, probably because their reel to reel was working that has some backing tracks for their songs. The two boys from Ohio seemed to be enjoying themselves, in fact, there was some banter about having gotten wasted the night before with their tourmates, but they still managed to pull off a great set of music.

They were joined for the night by The Subjects from New York, and I realized I'd not seen that band since they played the Casbah on tour with The Walkmen. They're super nice guys and I also very much enjoyed their set. The night was opened by Bear Hunter from Chico who hooked me up with a CD and I've actually been enjoying it quite a lot. I don't have very much luck taking photos at Soda Bar, but at least the videos can give you an idea of the show. There are a bunch if you 'keep on reading'.

Contest: Peter, Bjorn & John, Perro Del Mar, Lights On at House of Blues

This Wednesday, 'Casbah presents' is happy to welcome Peter, Bjorn and John to the House of Blues. The trio is currently on tour celebrating 10 years since the band's formation. The special tour features surprise guests, a special birthday light show, whistling contests for concertgoers, merch giveaways, and more. After this tour, PB&J will be going into the studio, so this is your last chance to see them until 2011. Additionally, in every city the band plays, they'll be playing rare old/brand new or never-before-heard songs.

Peter, Bjorn & John are also happy to welcome Swedish songstress El Perro Del Mar, critically acclaimed in her own right, along with them on tour. Her latest release, Love Is Not Pop was released on October 20. Download "Change of Heart"here (right click and "save target as")

And last but certainly not least, is an sd:dialed in local fave, Lights On, who are not only opening the show in San Diego, but in Los Angeles, too.

Tickets are still available for the show, but I've got a special package for one lucky winner and their guest. Since Peter, Bjorn and John are celebrating a birthday of sorts, email us at sddialedin@gmail.com and tell us your worst birthday present ever and we'll pick one lucky winner to receive a pair of tickets to the show, a PB&J t-shirt, music, and a meet and greet with the band before the show, courtesy of Indigenous. Use the subject "Birthday" and a winner will be chosen by noon the day of the show, so include your full name and phone number so we can give you a call. Good luck!

Photos: SD:Dialed In 3 yr. Anniversary show @ Casbah, 11/9/09

(I was pretty busy running around on Monday night to focus on the task of taking photos for the anniversary show, so my friend Tim stepped up. Below his words and photos. -rosey)

What a great show at the Casbah, my favorite venue to see local music. My only small gripe (as with many of the clubs here in SD) are the harsh stage lights. They often set the proper vibe to listen to good bands, but tend to pose a challenge when taking photos. It was refreshing to see two out of the three bands brought their own creative lighting techniques.

Get Ready For The Rumble!

There are a lot of people that I talk to that would love to see more shows and pay attention to what's happening in local music but who just can't because life gets in the way...kids, early morning day jobs, lack of disposable cash...what have you. For this reason, I'm really excited about this month's Rumble at Casbah happening tomorrow. The show is absolutely FREE, there will be free food and Trumer Pils drink specials, and a great lineup of music. The bands for this month's Rumble are Apes of Wrath, Awol Nation, and The Old In Out. Even if you're going to something later, the show is from 3-6pm which gives you plenty of time before heading off to the anniversary show at 4th & B, Transfer at Beauty Bar, Fashion Whore at Ruby Room, Beer Week activities, or any of the other great things going on in town.

As an added bonus, I will have a pair of VIP tickets to the sold out FM 94/9 Anniversary show happening the same night at 4th & B. I've been asked to sell merch for Matt Costa at the late Casbah show tomorrow night and so I won't be able to make the Fm 94/9 show after all. I'll have a raffle set up at the merch booth, just enter your name and phone number and I'll choose a winner before Apes of Wrath takes the stage and you can find me to grab your tickets. My loss is your gain. And Casbah matinee shows just rock. There's something just really fun about being there when the sun is still out on the patio. Hope to see everyone there.

Videos: Sea Wolf & Sara Lov at Belly Up, 11.5.09

Last night was busy. We started at M-Theory, went to dinner at Urban Solace (delicious but next time I'm getting the chicken), swung by Queen Bee's to say hi to the boys in Holy Rolling Empire, then went to Belly Up for Sara Lov and Sea Wolf. Not to mention after the show, catching the end of the Bloodflowers set at Bar Pink and me finishing my night with my friends at the Ken Club and then doing the weekend listings till 6 am. So there. Please don't ever tell me you're tired...but back to the Belly Up.

Sea Wolf always delivers a solid performance and I guess I've seen them about 4 times now and they're the kind of band that I may not listen to all the time around the house, then I see them and remember all of my favorite songs and then go back into a Sea Wolf phase. A reviewer said they were like Arcade Fire and I totally don't get that vibe at all. Alex reminds me more of Jeff Tweedy and Wilco circa- A.M. but maybe that's not entirely accurate either. Regardless, I love the band, and opener Sara Lov didn't disappoint either. She was actually pretty hilarious because she wasn't able to bring a backup band on the road, so she explained that she had them record their parts and then pressed them to vinyl. So aside from a couple songs with a couple Sea Wolf members, she played along with a record player. I'm a little bummed I didn't record her Arcade Fire cover of "My Body Is A Cage", but you can listen to it on her MySpace page.

Anyway, this was actually the last Sea Wolf video I recorded of the night, but I imagine there are gonna be a bunch of Twi-hards looking for this song, as it appears on the Twilight: New Moon soundtrack...(and I have to say, I haven't seen the 1st movie or read the books, but the soundtrack stands alone as a killer compilation of music). The rest of the videos from the night if you 'keep on reading'.

Sea Wolf "The Violet Hour"

(This was my favorite song of the night)
