Jeff's Weekly Pick: Emily Jane White @ Soda Bar Monday May 31, 2010

California folk singer Emily Jane White will be performing a Memorial Day show at Soda Bar on El Cajon Blvd. Even if you have been festive over the long weekend, there is no better way to cap it off than by watching this talented young woman sing songs from her latest effort, Victorian American. Although she would be the first to tell you her songs are sad , I feel drawn to her style and subject matter more with each listen. This is the voice of an artist that has experienced much in her lifetime. Although it would be easy to compare Emily to other female folk singers, those comparisons are not necessary. She has a certain way of expressing her feelings with her music that is worthy of the listener's undivided attention. In a time when so much music is disposable, Emily Jane White's songs should provide those in attendance with a performance that will not soon be forgotten.

Brothers Grimm set the stage.

Alpha Rev at West Coast Tavern

It's kinda scary that I had to actually look at a calendar to make sure this show happened only one week ago because it already feels so long ago. Before I get to Alpha Rev, there's a backstory. I really wanted to get into KPRI's private listener soundcheck for Broken Bells last Tuesday, but the label limited the amount of people to ten. Apparently 5 lucky people (and their guests) won, but at the actual event, only one pair showed up. My friends at the station called me but my stupid cell phone doesn't get reception in my house, so I missed the call. Later when I talked to Oz, he broke my heart about missing the soundcheck, but during our conversation he asked me if I knew of a place that had a built in happy hour crowd for a last minute show on Friday. I suggested True North. They parlayed the message to West Coast, and suddenly there was an Alpha Rev show booked at West Coast Tavern just a few days later.

Of course I went. And of course I filmed. And of course some chick talked into my camera telling me I was in her way. (You can hear her in video 2) I think my post about assholes that annoy me at shows is about due. One in the list is people who sit down then expect that nobody will get in front of them. Anyhow, here's the show (which I really enjoyed). Alpha Rev is from Austin and to me have a very straightforward sound that is perfect for AAA radio; brings to mind bands like Vega 4 or Tonic or Sister Hazel. Easy on the ears, made for singalongs.

West Coast Tavern doesn't traditionally have music, but they made accomodations for the station which was pretty cool, and ended up being the perfect spot for the afternoon session. I have to also say that yesterday there was the big Casbah show at the Birch North Park Theater, and beforehand Tim Pyles and I were treated to dinner. oh.mai.gawd. I'd had the three hummus dips and some fries before, but yesterday we ate and if you're planning a night in North Park, do yourself a favor and try the food.

We sampled several menu items, including the fries (with garlic aioli), mac n cheese ($8), lamb sliders ($8), seared ahi ($11), and the crab cakes ($11), all aided with the "Donkey Punch" ($12) which is kinda like a mule but with Bourbon instead of vodka, served in a copper mug. It was delicious and the small tapas-style servings allowed for sharing (just don't try and take one of Mr. Pyles lamb sliders unless you want to see a grown man cry). West Coast Tavern might not be the kinda place I hang out on a Friday or Saturday night, but it's definitely a spot I'd hit for happy hour or dinner before a show.

Black Keys Vinyl Giveaway

Last week The Black Keys released their record, simply called "Brothers". I'd tell you how great it is except someone with sticky fingers snaked my copy after I'd only given it one solid listen, (I know who it was and he is gonna be sorry), but the Black Keys are awesome, and since my first listen was over the speakers of the Casbah when the bar was empty, I'd say that I'm definitely a fan of this record and will be giving it some heavy rotation, just as soon as I get it back. But my problems are not your problems, and I've got a special giveaway just for sd:dialed in readers.

Of course, there's a spiel, so here it is. Warner Brothers Records, as an umbrella company, has launched an all vinyl online platform called "Because Sound Matters", where you'll be able to find vinyl from artists on Reprise, Sire, Atlantic, Nonesuch, and many other labels. You see that banner at the top of the site? Click it, explore it, love it. They asked me what vinyl my readers would want and I knew Black Keys was the way to go.

Of course, The Black Keys are touring this summer and the Casbah is presenting their September 25th show at Soma. Tickets are available here.

To enter, send me an email (sddialedin at gmail) with the subject "Black Keys" and a photo of your record collection. I don't care if you have one measly 7" that you got as a promo or a million out of print records, or if you dig out your mom's 45s to claim them as your own. Include your name and phone number and one lucky winner will be contacted next week.

Just for the fun of it, here are some of my Black Keys photos from last year's 94/9 Independence Jam- horrific lighting, tragic photography and all. (side note, this year's Indie Jam is gonna kick ass, so tune in to FM 94/9. I don't know when they're gonna reveal the date or bands, but trust me, you're gonna want to get your tickets as soon as they're available)

Finally, if you missed the group on The Late Show with David Letterman last night, you can see the performance here.

not so newsy news bits...

I haven't posted newsy bits in a while...I figure you're all up to date via Twitter and Facebook, right? Well, just in case you're not, have your head in the sand, or your work has blocked every social media site, Google, and blog except for sd:dialedin, here are some things you might've missed in the past few weeks. Too bad the really good juicy stuff I have to keep to myself. I hate secrets.

1. Del Mar Racetrack released their concert schedule for the summer. You can always refer to the Del Mar Scene website

7/23: Pinback
7/30: Common Sense
8/6: The B-52s
8/13: The Soft Pack
8/14: Jimmy Cliff & Matisyahu *
8/20: Ozomatli
8/21: Weezer *
8/27: Super Diamond
8/28: Craft Microbrew Festival & Local Music Showcase **
9/3: The English Beat
9/4: ZZ Top *

-This year the Four O'Clock Friday Concerts will be held at the Seaside Stage next to the Seaside Terrace Cabana.
* Saturday Concerts are held at the Infield Stage.
** Local Music Showcase is held in the Infield Pavilion Stage.

The concert is free with track admission. Following the last race, concert prices are $20. Make sure you get there before the last post to save yourself some cash. Concert starts after the races.

2. It's already old news, but the 91X Morning Show got the axe. You can read Mat's blog about it here. Best of luck to him in any future endeavors. At least now I'll probably get to see him at more shows since he doesn't have to wake up at 4 am.

3. There will be no Street Scene this year. Really?? Didn't we all know this last year? Regardless, several news outlets felt obligated to resurrect the issue that kinda feels like kicking a dead horse. So just to reiterate, no Street Scene in 2010.

4. If you missed it, the U-T/SignOnSanDiego put together a great list of free summer concerts. Save it to your bookmarks. Sara also has a list that includes summer festivals.

5. A few weeks ago I wrote about Seth Combs leaving CityBeat. I didn't follow up, but Peter Holslin was named the new music editor and I believe this week's issue is his first at the helm. The online version was being a little wonky, but they reported on the juicy tidbit that Radio Room is being sold to Scot Blair, owner of Small Bar and Hamilton's. All the info is here, but that should certainly make for a helluva beer crawl between Hamilton's, Bluefoot, Toronado, Ritual, Small Bar, Soda Bar, Blind Lady, and now whatever the Radio Room is to become.

6. Finally, 944 Magazine's music issue is coming out and guess what site was named the number one music blog in San Diego? Kinda cool. Check it out here.

Things have certainly been chaotic lately, so if you're missing any features, or there's specific content you'd like to see, please feel free to comment. I have a backlog of photos and videos that I haven't and probably won't post, but if there's something you know I caught that you want to see, just ask. I'll try and get Hockey and Alpha Rev videos up soon, as well as photos from OK Go, Shout Out Louds, et. al.

Remember you can always follow me on twitter @sddialedin, fan or friend me at Facebook, or check out my contributions at SoundDiego. If you're interested in advertising on this site or hiring me for work (open to just about anything these days), shoot me an email at sddialedin at gmail.

Need last minute weekend plans? Try Lightning in a Bottle!

This weekend, thousands will convene in Irvine at The Do LaB's 5th annual Lightning in a Bottle Festival. If you've been to Coachella, you're familiar with the DoLab and the type of art installations and music that have become iconic year after year.

The "music, arts and green living worlds" will converge at Oak Canyon Ranch in Irvine, California on May 28-31, 2010. The four-day, three-night festival will be headlined by San Diego's own Album Leaf among many other musical guests. Additionally, you can catch live vaudeville performances by Lucent Dossier, art installations, sustainability workshops, yoga classes and more...

Tickets are $190 for the whole weekend. Purchasing and additional information can be found at the official Lightning in a Bottle site, or click 'keep on reading' for the full press release with info and details. And, since I asked, The Album Leaf performs on Sunday at 9pm. Not sure if it will be Jimmy Lavalle performing solo, as a 3 piece, or some other formation, but he knows how to handle such situations.

With a lineup that is equal parts music, art and green workshops, Lightning
in a Bottle will envelop its guests in a myriad of activities throughout the
festival. Three-day passes are available at this time to encourage a sense
of community among all of the artists, musicians, performers, friends and
families. Tickets are available in advance starting at $190 online at

Nada Surf & Telekinesis at the Belly Up, 5.24.10

Nada Surf and Telekinesis performed at the Belly Up last night. The show wasn't sold out, but it appeared that there were a lot of walkups, so it might've come close by showtime. Telekinesis are from Seattle, and it was obvious they were thrilled to be touring with Nada Surf, and clear that they're a big influence on the band who played sweet pop tunes with vocals that reminded me of Derek from Kite Flying Society and Grey Ghosts.

As for Nada Surf, they sealed a great week of music for me personally, as I got to see 3 of my favorite bands in 3 consecutive nights with Frightened Rabbit on Saturday and The National on Sunday. As Telekinesis were finishing their set, I stepped outside and ran into Daniel, bassist of Nada Surf, and we chatted about San Diego, about the lack of good all-ages venues around the country ("I got to see The Ramones when I was 15! That would never happen nowadays!"), about their recent European tour, and that the band had spent 9 days in his family's home in Ibiza which sounded amazing...it's solar powered with 4 foot thick walls, so after playing dates with virtually no sleep, hopping from city to city around Spain and Switzerland, it sounded like quite a break, though they also had fun DJing and experiencing local life. He also told me they had a "secret weapon" for the show, that Doug Hillard of Guided By Voices was playing guitar on the tour. He was so sweet, apologizing that he had to ask my name a second time and gave me double cheek kisses as they do in Spain, and it reconfirmed my love of the band. He left to work out the setlist, and I went in to grab a spot as close to the stage as I could find.

I guess I didn't realize that if i had a hi-fi isn't in stores until June 8th (via the band's label Mardev Records) since I had an advance of the record, but the covers they played were well received by the crowd. There were a couple songs I was bummed they skipped, "I Like What You Say", "88 Windows", and "Inside of Love", to name a few, however since they played with two extra band members, the set deserved to be more rockin and there was no way to leave that show feeling disappointed.

Official video of "Electrocution"

Here are the videos from the show. Shaky at times and sometimes Matthews vocals are drowned out, not to mention the chick in front of me who thought Daniel was looking at her and flipped her hair about 300 times, but they'll have to do for a handheld cybershot. Click the side arrows to see all the videos.

The Twilight Saga: Eclipse -Original Motion Picture Soundtrack

I keep getting information about the Twilight Saga: Eclipse soundtrack, so I thought I'd put one big post together and be done with it. I haven't read the books, nor did I see the first film, but only because I haven't rented a DVD in close to a decade. When it's on HBO, I'll watch it. The Twilight Saga: Eclipse - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack will be available in stores and online June 8th. Put together by my hero, Alexandra Patsavas, of Chop Shop Music Supervision, the first movie soundtrack sold over 2.5 million copies.

The full track listing was released a couple weeks ago:

1. Metric—“Eclipse (All Yours)”
2. Muse—“Neutron Star Collision (Love is Forever)”
3. The Bravery—“Ours”
4. Florence + The Machine—“Heavy In Your Arms”
5. Sia—“My Love”
6. Fanfarlo—“Atlas”
7. The Black Keys—“Chop And Change”
8. The Dead Weather—“Rolling In On A Burning Tire”
9. Beck and Bat For Lashes—“Let’s Get Lost”
10. Vampire Weekend—“Jonathan Low”
11. UNKLE—“With You In My Head” (feat. The Black Angels)
12. Eastern Conference Champions—“A Million Miles An Hour”
13. Band of Horses—“Life On Earth”
14. Cee Lo Green—“What Part of Forever”
15. Howard Shore—“Jacob’s Theme”

Below is Muse's "Neutron Star Collision (Love is Forever)" from the soundtrack that was released last week.

Frightened Rabbit and Maps & Atlases at the Casbah, 5.22.10

I just realized just how many shows I haven't written about and I'm really only capable of handling one task at a time, so I'll hammer out what I can before sleep comes calling. I've been to a lot of shows lately and some photos are better than others, but since I actually took the time to title my videos from Frightened Rabbit, that's what you get first.

I had been anticipating this show for a very long time. I followed closely as the band got stuck in London and missed Coachella because of the cloud of volcanic ash that hung over Europe. I also tried to set up a session at Undercarriage, but that didn't work out, so I'll have to be a little more aggressive next time.

We got there early to lock space up front and the band was awesome as always. The show was opened by Our Brother The Native, which had a few too many knobs, pedals and effects for my small brain, and Maps & Atlases who were awesome and are returning to the Casbah in July.

By the time Frightened Rabbit hit the stage, the bar was packed. Scott commented about the Casbah, that the band's first US headlining show was there, and said that no matter how big the band gets, they'd always be happy to return there. Needless to say, there was no need to win over the crowd...the audience was devoted from the first note to last.

And, of course, there's the videos. Below, here's the entire show except the first song ("Skip The Youth"). Click the right or left arrows on the playlist to see all videos.

Jeff's Weekly Pick: Transfer, Dirty Sweet, The Silent Comedy, Apes of Wrath @ Birch North Park Theatre Friday May 28, 2010

This blogger has been accused of only touting touring bands, while tending to bypass the local San Diego bands. I cannot disagree with those sentiments entirely, but I have definitely made an effort recently to watch more of our home grown talent on a regular basis. This Friday is your chance to catch four of the best bands San Diego has to offer in what promises to be one great show. As a bonus, the event is taking place at the beautifully renovated Birch North Park Theatre. Having seen several shows there, I can easily give my stamp of approval since all the proper elements are in place for a great live performance: great sound, lighting and comfortable seating in an intimate venue. Plus the cost is what one would pay to see just one of these bands much of the time.

Dirty Sweet has just returned from a European tour and have released a new album, American Spiritual. Transfer also released their latest effort, Future Selves, which shows more diversity within the songs. The Silent Comedy are gaining popularity with their energized live show. Apes of Wrath gets it done with fewer members, but their songs are so frenetic and catchy at the same time.

If you haven't been to the Birch, you owe it to yourself to support all these great bands as a great way to kick off the upcoming holiday weekend. This is a Casbah produced show, and the venue is almost all ages (5+).

Ticket Giveaway- HoB 5th Anniversary feat. Shout Out Louds, OK Go, Earl Greyhound, & Freelance Whales

Last week, Josh posted about OK Go after interviewing bassist Tim Nordwind. If you missed it, you can read it here. OK Go, however, are not the only reason to be excited about this show, with headliners Shout Out Louds touring on their third release, Work, Earl Greyhound touring on their sophomore release, Suspicious Package, and a band I've grown to love in the two times I've seen them perform live, Freelance Whales, whose debut Weathervanes is quickly making a name for the Brooklyn band.

I'll spare a long-winded post and just say that I am giving away a pair of tickets to the show, courtesy of Freelance Whales and Cornerstone Promotion. The show is Saturday, May 22 (TOMORROW!) and because it's a special anniversary show, it is a DAYTIME show, with doors opening at 1 pm.

To enter, send your full name and phone number to sddialedin at gmail and I'll pick a winner this afternoon.

Photos: North Park Festival of Arts 2010

I mentioned earlier this week that I was absolutely pleased with the North Park Festival of Arts. Though I had to get up earlier than I'm used to, the day was fun and the May Gray kept the day bearable. It was my first go at stage production and though I thought I'd be stressed out, when you have great bands that show up on time, an amazing sound man Sean, a great MC like Tim Pyles, and the help from a couple off duty SDPD officers helping out with our loading area parking, the day went incredibly smooth. From the opening set by The Elephant Project all the way to the final notes from Wirepony, and the sets by Trouble In The Wind, Martian Horses, Josh Damigo and Republic of Letters in between, I couldn't have asked for a better day. Thanks to all the participating bands, to all the people who came to the festival, and to my family for bringing my nieces to hang out for the afternoon.

Broken Bells Kick Off Humphrey's 2010 Concert Season

Broken Bells kicked off their first tour with the opening of Humphrey's 2010 concert season. The show never reached any epic peaks, but if you've listened to their self-titled release, you didn't expect any major showboating, and if you've seen James Mercer perform before, you know that he delivers a straight-shooting show. The crowd wasn't limited to the indie rock set, which means there were plenty of people there just to enjoy a night out by the bay and spend gobs on adult libations.

Morning Benders opened the night with a set of material mostly off their latest release, Big Echo, and when they asked people to come to the front to dance, you could see Elite security losing their minds, attempting to let the crowd enjoy one song but promptly sending everyone back to their seats. This is the curse of a seated show; the crowd can't agree whether to sit or stand, and with the narrow chairs and cramped rows, there's not much wiggle room. I've seen Morning Benders about half a dozen times now, though always in small venues, so it was nice seeing them spread their wings a bit on a huge stage.

With just one album under their belts, Broken Bells performed just under an hour, including their two song encore, topping out at 12 songs including a cover of Crimson & Clover, which incidentally was the song that got the people in my section to all finally stand and the chatterboxes behind me to declare their love for the song only to then continue talking through it (and the whole set). If the music is playing, you have NO REASON to be flapping your lips. period. Shut the hell up during shows. Treat it like a movie. Or church. Or kindergarten.

Aside from that, I enjoyed the show. I especially appreciated how smoothly things went when I got my photo pass (Thanks, Nikki!). They accidentally gave me a VIP pass instead of Photo, but once we figured that out, it was smooth sailing and the Elite security were friendly to me as I asked the parameters, since there was no waiver or rule sheet to sign and no specific photo area. There were a handful of real photographers there (or at least people with professional cameras), but it was still fun attempting to shoot the stage that was taller than me with my Sony Cybershot.

If you wanna know more about the show, there's a great review of the show at SDNN. Last, I'd be remiss if I didn't thank Jeff for buying such awesome tickets (4th row!).
