Things To Do In San Diego: June 30-July 1, 2014

What a weekend. Friday night kicked off at the Fair's Battle of the Bands, which ended early enough to arrive at SoundDiego Live on time. Let's just say I had an abundance of drink tickets, and never thought to maybe eat dinner at some point, so the Casbah for Transfer was fun, but thank goodness for friends like Robin to put up with me after deciding the Ken Club was our final stop of the night. Yikes.  I guess it was a bit of purging. Pouring some out to live as I've lived it for quite some time, because Nova's now home, and we're all living together and I probably have to start acting like a grown up. Not that shows and going out are off the docket, but it's definitely a different chapter of my life. We are far from moved in to the new place, but it's coming together, and we couldn't be more excited to move forward. This week is going to be funny because Independence Day falls on a Friday, so weekend listings might be thin, but this week is certainly not. I'll make one last appeal for you to get your tickets to Ronnie Spector on Thursday at The North Park Theater. It's going to be an incredible night. Monday and Tuesday archives are after the jump.

Things To Do In San Diego: June 27-29, 2014

This week has been crazy, no? Maybe I should blame World Cup. No, I didn't have 4.5+ extra hours in my day to suddenly devote to watching soccer. Darren and I didn't get out of town while Nova was gone, but we're happy she'll be home this weekend and we're much closer to being moved into the new place. I'll be at the Fair today, judging a Battle of the Bands with my esteemed Casbah cohorts, Tim Mays and Tim Pyles, and then dropping by SoundDiego Live before catching Transfer at the Casbah.  Not really sure how the rest of the weekend will go, but there are plenty of World Cup games, shows, and local festivals to keep us busy. Friday through Sunday archives are after the jump.

On Saturday, June 21, 2014, at approximately 2140 hours, a lone adult female was walking on the 2700 block of Lincoln Avenue when she was hit from behind by two suspects. She was knocked to the ground and began fighting back. One of the suspects grabbed her clothing and attempted to pull them off. The female fought back and yelled for help. (June 22) Last night on Lincoln, in between Idaho and Oregon st. in North Park I was walking home by myself when I was suddenly pushed to the ground from behind and immediately began taking punches by [what felt like] two men. They unsuccessfully attempted to sexually assault me while beating me then fled. I was sent to the hospital and was told I have a fractured nose, my right eye was swollen shut until just a couple of hours ago, the police, nurses, and doctors think I was dragged due to road rash, along with third degree burns from the soup I was carrying. Both of my hands are badly bruised. I look like a completely different person right now.

I'm not the only woman this has happened to, rather the sixth. This happened three blocks from where I live, the woman before me was assaulted on the 17th of this month. TUESDAY. I want everyone in the community to know this is happening, especially all of the women who live in my neighborhood and surrounding neighborhoods. Please keep an eye out for one another and be safe. I love you all so much.

Things To Do In San Diego: June 23-26, 2014

I'd love to say I had some amazing weekend, but the truth is that since we're moving, and since I had a ton of work to do, and since we got a van reservation on Saturday night and my sister's graduation on Sunday, we didn't really do anything in the way of music. Sometimes that's just the way it works out. I guess we caught Still Ill on Friday so maybe that counts for some effort at least. We still have a lot to move and haven't even touched my stuff yet, so between work and that, we'll pretty much be off the radar and probably not going on a getaway as we'd hoped, but such is life. There are some good shows this week, so if you're not in the midst of moving, you should really get out and take advantage. Monday through Thursday archives are after the jump.

Things To Do In San Diego: June 20-22, 2014

The weekend is finally here and so along with working a couple shows, it's time for me and Darren to suck it up and start packing up our apartments to merge into the new one. Exciting, but definitely not fun. Fortunately we can enjoy some World Cup action while we pack. This was a really good week- Owl John at the Casbah on Wednesday was maybe my favorite show of the year so far- and I got to test a new camera they bought for me at The North Park Theatre. Here are your weekend listings. Frday through Sunday archives are after the jump.

ATTN: Clear your calendars for July 6th!

On Sunday, July 6th, an EVENT OF EVENTS is taking place at the Che Cafe.
Here are the details-

7PM Doors
$7 (That’s almost like $1.75 per band- what a steal!)
ALL AGES

~First up is “Monty”. Monty is self described as “Dark and dusk. Damp and cusp”. Monty is made up of 50% Meseta, so you know you’re in for a treat.

~After Monty, Peru 4 U is up. Peru 4 U is the culmination of solo endeavors from San Diego native Matt Peterson of Proud Moon. Peru 4 U’s distinct sound is made up of creative sampling, electronic drum beats, minimal but tasteful vocal parts and acoustic instrumentation that shouldn’t work BUT DOES. This will be Peru 4 U’s first live show.

~After Peru 4 U, DC-based band, The Obsessives are up. If you are a fan of Topshelf Records, you will love The Obsessives. This two-piece pulls influence from Weatherbox, Paramore, Into It Over It etc. Don’t miss em, they are coming all the way from the east coast… c’mon!

~Big Bad Buffalo finishes off the night. Pulling influence from bands such as Weezer and Faraquet, Big Bad Buffalo aim to have you singing along during the show, and disoriented afterwards. This will be the first date on their first tour up the coast. Expect surprises.

DONT MISS OUT, THERE ARE NO VIABLE EXCUSES, GAME OF THRONES IS OVER

Statistics show that the amount of fun you have at shows exponentially increases based on the
amount of friends you bring!

Things To Do In San Diego: June 18-19,2014

I cannot wait till tonight! Owl John at the Casbah...trust me. It's the tour opening show, too, so you just gotta dive in without every blogger's review. I added a couple things to the listings since Sunday...I forgot about the Green Flash Concert Series that KPRI does at Birch Aguarium, so I added that. Scars on 45 are the support act tonight, but I definitely had a summer of listening to their album before so maybe I can sneak there before Casbah. Also, tomorrow's Third Thursday is free with RSVP and there's a shuttle from U-31 and back, so they're making it super easy to catch a fun show with The Burning of Rome. Wednesday and Thursday archives are after the jump.

Frightened Rabbit Fans: Behold Owl John

I'm super excited to see Owl John tonight, but I'm going to just publish a full press release since I already covered Owl John on SoundDiego. If you're a fan of Frightened Rabbit, you don't want to miss tonight's show with Owl John. Listen to Hate Music here (official release August 5)

(Via Atlantic Records)
Owl John, aka Scott Hutchison of critically acclaimed Scottish group Frightened Rabbit, is proud to announce the release of his self-titled debut album, out August 5 on Canvasback Music/Atlantic Records. Hutchison has announced a handful of North American tour dates – traveling around the West Coast through the end of the month. For more ticket information and tour updates, please visit http://owljohn.com. The record, produced by Andy Monaghan of Frightened Rabbit and good friend Simon Liddell of Olympic Swimmers, was recorded between the Isle of Mull in Scotland and the West Coast of America. The first unveil of Owl John came with Hate Music, which can be listened to here.

The Owl John album was born of Scott’s desire to get creatively inspired ahead of the next Frightened Rabbit record, and with the rest of the band on a break following the release of their 4th album Pedestrian Verse (their first with Canvasback Music / Atlantic Records). Scott headed to the Isle of Mull with the mission to write and record an album in two weeks. With Andy and Simon (who also plays guitar in Frightened Rabbit’s live band), they hired a space in the Island’s Tobermory Arts Centre, ‘An Tobar.’ For a fortnight they made music by day and drank whisky by night; at the end, an album was made and ‘Owl John’ was born.

The Owl John album, which showcases Scott’s trademark brutal honesty, sees a different direction from the music of Frightened Rabbit. While still remaining raw, powerful and often heart-breaking, ‘Owl John’ shows a different side of Scott as a songwriter.

Scott has to say:

“It's been about ten years since I had the notion to add the word 'Owl' as a middle name. Scott Owl John Hutchison. I thought it had a really splendid flow to it. I suppose I enjoy owls as much as most people, admiring their weird neck thing and having read 'Plop' countless times as a wee one. I don't buy the wisdom bit, but they are incredibly good at being owls and it would be nice to be as effective at being a human. Sadly, I'm not and it is from this croaking foible that songs come. The desperate crunch of failure sat right next to the fizzing, spumante spark of joy. They cackle and point at each other because they don't understand their opponent. You will find me sitting between them, eating a bag of nuts (not Brazils, they make my mouth itch) and documenting the whole sorry episode.

John is a homeless.
John is a priest.
John is a witness.
John is a beast.

It was also approximately 10 years ago that I started a band called Frightened Rabbit. In that time I've dedicated so much of my life to that good wee band with a stupid name, I felt it was time to indulge John. Sing it with me...

John is a weirdo.
John is a thief.
John is a wino.
Listen, bleed, weep.”

Scott hails from Selkirk, Scotland and formed Frightened Rabbit with his brother Grant (drums), bassist Billy Kennedy and guitarist Andy Monaghan in 2003. They have released 4 studio albums to date.

RIP Tony Gwynn 1960-2014

San Diegans and baseball fans are heartbroken to hear the news of Tony Gwynn's passing. I don't typically post death notices, but growing up in this city means that many of my childhood memories are intertwined with family outings to baseball games, and Tony Gwynn was the heart of our team and an icon for athletes across all sports. This is very sad news for San Diego. Coverage: ESPN CNN Sporting News

Things To Do In San Diego: June 15-17, 2014

It's Father's Day and I'm so grateful for all the incredible men in my life. My Tata was the most amazing, generous and hard working man until he was gone. My dad has always demonstrated love and and commitment to family, and set a high standard for marriage and love in my life. Watching my brother soften as his family has grown has been a beautiful thing, and seeing the way my brother in law handles an all female household is a lesson in love and patience. And Darren, who has built a life and work around being a dad first is one of the most attractive things about him. Watching him provide a life of nurturing and fulfillment for Nova is one of the most incredible things to watch and be a part of. To all the dads in your life, Happy Fathers Day.

Things To Do In San Diego: June 14, 2014

Sorry about yesterday's post. We'll call it a three tequila post and just leave it at that. Tonight I'm working for Fu Manchu and there are plenty of tickets at the door. I just got out of How To Train Your Dragon 2 and while I'm sure your kids will love it, I found it rather annoying in respect to the themes and family story. I mean, I cry at EVERYTHING, and this one just made me mad. Anyway, I'm updating listings just because I want yesterday's to go away. Happy Father's Day!

ThingsTo Do In San Diego: June 13, 2014

I went out last night and ran into a bunch of old friends who dared ask, "How's life?"

While most people hold standard answers like, "things are good," or, "I'm fine," I actually take the time to answer. "I've never been busier nor happier." That's my standard answer, and if the person really wants me to elaborate, I gush about the Casbah and The North Park Theatre and life with Darren and Nova. I've never been more fulfilled by work in my whole life. Toss in the fact that at this time next month me and Darren and Nova will finally all live together, and I can't think of a happier time in my life. Things didn't necessarily time out the way I thought, but it turns out that my reality now is better than my fantasies 5, 10, and 15 years ago. Congratulations to all the students graduating, to the kids moving on to the next grade, and to everyone who takes the time to truly live. There's so much to capture this weekend. Get it hard.

Things To Do In San Diego: June 12, 2014

World Cup starts today! Woo-hoo! I'm feeling guilt, however, because FIFA (and the IOC, for that matter) have way too much power and so I feel like a lot of people, love the game, hate the corrupt overlords. Hopefully with World Cup North Park 2014 we can find some fun family friendly after school stuff today. Speaking of which, Nova, like many kids, has her last day of school tomorrow! Summer isn't the same when you're a grownup, but we're looking forward to a great summer of fun, music, festivals, and beach ahead. I'll get weekend listings up as soon as I have them.

North Park Goes Big For World Cup 2014

I got this email back in November:

Bar and Restaurant owners in North Park are creating a World Cup FanZone in the heart of North Park, at 30th & University, with "Host Venues" showing all games throughout the month-long tournament. Festivites include a family-oriented "Kick-Off" street fair on June 8, 2014, to include a youth parade of nations, mini soccer tournament, skill activities, and live music. Final game to be shown on big screens placed on 30th Street during Closing Festival; also to include food vendors and beer garden...

It appears things have scaled back a bit (or else I completely missed the kick-off street fair which is totally plausible with the week I had last week), but over 20 venues in North Park will be broadcasting the World Cup games. Obviously hours and locations vary dependent on game times, but you can follow along and make your own schedule by checking out the official website here. There's more information from April in Uptown News. Be sure to hashtag #WCNP2014 as your out and about enjoying the games so fellow soccer lovers (and stalkers) can find you!

Be sure to like the page on FACEBOOK: https://www.facebook.com/WorldCupNorthPark
and Follow/Tag them on Twitter: https://twitter.com/WCNP2014  @WCNP2014 because a few people put in a lot of time to make this sweet possibility happen in our neighborhood.

UPDATE (6/12/14): Big news on opening day! With the help of the City of San Diego and North Park Main Street, several business owners in North Park, including Bar Pink, The OfficeBARSD, Caffe Calabria, Coin-Op Game Room, Waypoint Public, West Coast Tavern, Ritual Tavern, Lefty's, Rufskin, Fat Boys, and U-31, have pitched in to close down 30th St. and put a 20' wide jumbotron on the street for the World FIFA World Cup final match on July 13! It will be all-ages and free to the public!

Rocky Votolato at the Casbah Tonight

Rocky Votolato

Rocky Votolato returns to the Casbah tonight for the first time since he released his last full-length album, Television of Saints, in 2012.  Despite being a fan of his for quite sometime, that was my first time seeing Rocky Votolato live, so his 2014 West Coast tour is long overdue and welcomed.  But I think it should speak volumes that he counts among Rosey's favorites.  Although his 2006 release, Makers, was his breakthrough release, every album  since finds his stripped-down approach maturing and providing even more complex melodies.    His younger brother, Cody Votolato of Blood Brothers fame, will be backing him on electric guitar tonight, so expect a mix of spare acoustic arrangements with bursts of raw jagged energy.  Opening for Rocky Votolato tonight is Lotte Kestner and Kevin Long.  Doors are at 9pm tickets are $14 at the door.

Things To Do In San Diego: June 9-11, 2014

If you've known me and this site for a long time, you probably know that one of my all time favorite musicians ever is Rocky Votolato. He started taking the lead of David Bazan and has done a gazillion house shows, so he hasn't been to the Casbah since 2012, which is WAY. TOO. LONG. The other day I asked if he was touring solo or with a band, and he told me his brother Cody Votolato (of the Blood Brothers) is on the road with him, playing backup electric guitar. Anyway, even though last week and this past weekend were nutso, you can be sure you'll find me at the Casbah tonight. Monday through Wednesday listings are after the jump.

Things To Do In San Diego: June 3-5, 2014

Excuse me if I lose my mind this week. I'm so excited about both the Rodriguez shows at The North Park Theatre, which are both sold out, and I'm also excited to work at The Irenic on Wednesday for tUnE-YaRds and Sylvan Esso, which is also sold out, but I am definitely going to need a relaxing weekend. Not to neglect my beloved Casbah, because there are some great shows this week- Camper Van Beethoven, The Jezabels and Vance Joy- too. But above all of that, today is ELECTION DAY! It is your responsibility as a citizen to vote. Support Props B & C. Tuesday through Thursday archives after the jump.

Caravan To Cabo

I ran into a friend at the Hard Rock last week who turned me on to this unique event he is calling “Caravan to Cabo”, where five San Diego bands and a film crew will drive south to Cabo for Mexico’s biggest surf contest in history, Los Cabos Open of Surf starting June 16th. The surf contest will feature a two day music festival with Grammy nominated Los Amigos Invisibles headlining the event. Local bands joining the stage and the Caravan are: Todo Mundo, Sister Juanita, Ease Up, Hazmatt and DJ Man Cat.

The surf event and music festival can be followed daily on the live webcast, a platform which last year had just under 1 million viewers tune in to watch their favorite surfers compete for a spot on the world tour at www.loscabosopenofsurf.com. With the surf contest starting the same day the caravan leaves San Diego, the surf webcast will perform daily updates of the caravan’s progress enabling viewers from around the globe to follow our local bands as they trek south through Baja.

The adventure down Baja will also be captured on film for a documentary to be released early 2015. The film will be directed by local surf and music enthusiast, Eric Sorensen, a former professional surfer who now spends his days as the Creative Content Director for Osiris Shoes and the Marketing Manager for Blvd Clothing Company where he works closely with American rapper Soulja Boy. The goal of the documentary is to detail the epic Baja adventure as well as motivate surf and music enthusiasts of So Cal to join the caravan in 2015.

“Caravan to Cabo” is the brain-child of local musician, Jonathan Savage, who played a show in Mazatlan Mexico in 2012 at a venue owned by the producers of the surfing event. Since 2012, Savage has booked nearly twenty California bands to visit and play shows in Mazatlan, a town he claims to have a vibrant and modern music scene. To Savage, “Caravan to Cabo” seemed like the next step in the direction to further connect the California music scene with Mexico, a place he claims has a rapidly progressing taste in popular music. Savage is not new to music event production having developed “Rock the Boat” in 2013, a first annual sold out event aboard a 500 capacity ship in Mission Bay which featured six bands including Dead Feather Moon, Deadly Birds, Pilot Touhill, The Tarr Steps, Oliver Trolley, and UpRooted. Next year Savage expects to expand the Los Cabos Open of Surf music festival to three days and include over 12 local bands to join the caravan.

People can follow the adventure on social media as it happens at #caravan2cabo or follow the surfing webcast to see how these local bands handle the rough Baja deserts, the big stage at Costa Azul, and the party scene of this major surfing event.
“Caravan to Cabo” bands Sister Juanita can be seen this Friday headlining the Casbah, while Todo Mundo can be found Sunday at the Belly Up. The bands will be collecting donations (new and used clothing and toys) at these local shows to be distributed as they drive down Baja, please contact the bands directly for more information on how to make a donation!

Things To Do In San Diego: June 2, 2014

I guess I was a little stir crazy last week because I sure went for it this weekend. Darren and I hit X-Fest on Friday and stayed through Phantogram before driving to the San Diego County Fair Media Preview Night and eating more junk food than anyone should ever consume. From there, we went to Soma to catch MIA. Of course, since he took the night off from work on Friday, while he worked on Saturday I had a good ol' time at Punk Rock Karaoke at the Casbah, and then worked for Pete Yorn on Sunday. This week is going to be nutso with the two Rodriguez shows at The North Park Theatre among other things, but I'll try and stay on top of it all and keep my head on straight. Monday archives are after the jump.

Phone Photos: Pete Yorn at Casbah

I got to work at the sold out Pete Yorn show at the Casbah. He was super cool and they gave out free shirts to the first 50 people. I'd heard that he was only going to play 8 songs and thankfully that wasn't true...he played about an hour and a half (without a setlist) spanning his many albums and even threw in a Warren Zevon cover. It was super sweet and after he took photos with fans, which we've finally gotten organized enough to handle to avoid crazy fan situations like we had with Sean Lennon. He hugged and cheek-kissed me goodnight, which would've been a cooler photo situation, but I'm not that needy. I have to admit that I associate PY with my shitty ex, so it was nice to realize I still love his music and created new memories with Darren present.  And they paid me extra for being awesome at merch, so on top of the awesome show, tequila and beer, it was a super excellent night.
