Things To Do In San Diego: September 30-October 2, 2014

That thing about waking up on the wrong side of the bed is very, very real. I'm in grump city today- my senile cat can't decide if she wants to be inside or out at night anymore and cries relentlessly to come back in only to cry to be let out again, my neighbor came home from the Dominican, kicked out the music producer but adopted the yappiest of annoying yappy dogs who barks all day and all night, and waking up to get Nova to school in La Mesa is a challenging start to our mornings. Fortunately I'm sitting in The North Park Theatre watching The Gaslight Anthem set up for an FM 94/9 Loud @ private performance that's going to go off in about half an hour or so and hopefully I can just caffeine through the day. Maybe it's time to set up my studio/office into my nap room before the heatwave comes through this weekend. At any rate, I'll get over it. Wednesday and Thursday listings are after the jump.

Things To Do In San Diego: September 29, 2014

Thanks to everyone for all the awesome birthday wishes. I had a great weekend, even if it wasn't exactly according to plan. I loved checking out The Kooks on Friday, and then I caught Split Screens at The Hideout, and then I met up with Robin Roth at the Ken Club, and well, that never ends well. On Saturday I had a lazy day with Darren, then I was supposed to take my sister to Foster the People but realized her friend was over, so instead I drove them, knowing two 16 year olds would love the show. Instead I enjoyed some quiet time by the ocean. And then my actual birthday was spent at a 7 year old's birthday party and then we met up with my mom, sisters, nieces, cousin, and uncle at Oktoberfest. Adams Avenue just never happened for me though I love knowing that it was awesome and everyone had a great time but it was awesome getting Nova on a rare weekend so honestly, things couldn't have been better. Monday archives are after the jump.

Things To Do San Diego: September 26-28, 2014

Wow. I feel a million times better today. We had an awesome afternoon at the beach then a miracle impromptu birthday dinner at Point Loma Sea Foods in which Nova tried new foods and discovered new foods she's willing to eat. There were great events last night but I just really needed a non-music night. This weekend is jam packed with Adams Ave, Tour de Fat, The Kooks, Foster the People, Sir Sly and more. Enjoy!

Things To Do In San Diego: September 25, 2014

So much going on tonight. I decided to edit after I got an "are you okay?" message. Yes, I'm great. I worked way too late last night and I got super grouchy about it and, compounded with other stupid stuff (and whisky), it seemed like I wrote a cry for help. The truth is that everything is great, I'm just learning how to reorganize my schedule to make all the pieces fit peacefully and sometimes I probably take on more than I can chew. I'll figure it all out eventually, and I get to find the joy in days like today when I got to sleep in.

Upcoming Shows At The North Park Theatre

Things To Do In San Diego: September 23-24, 2014

Whew. Yesterday was so busy that I never even checked in. It was kind of nuts...I worked at the theatre 10-2, we picked up Nova from school in La Mesa and hustled to South Park for her piano, then hustled back to Rolando for her ice skating class, then hustled back to North Park so I could work at the Lykke Li show, where I shot photos, fielded a thousand text messages and phone calls, and attempted to manage the various social media accounts I manage while trying to make sure Nova and Darren had a good time. It was an incredible show, though I can't believe I was outside when she played "Love Me Like I'm Not Made of Stone". If anyone has video, send me a link. After the show, I caught Tori Roze and the Hot Mess at Bar Pink and then called it an early night. This is going to be an awesome week, and I updated the listings because I can't believe I forgot Tour De Fat. So much to look forward to. Tuesday & Wednesday archives are after the jump.

Things To Do In San Diego: September 22, 2014

I had a great weekend that kinda started on Thursday. In The Valley Below played at 207 at the Hard Rock Hotel and it was awesome (videos up on my YouTube channel). On Friday, my sister joined for the the Thrillist Hotel Takeover where we enjoyed all the awesome food and drinks and saw some old friends. After we went to Ballast Point then to the Casbah, so it was definitely a good night. On Saturday, Daye joined me for Hotel Thrillist again, but besides some food and coconuts, it was more of an Intervention style pool party so we didn't stay very long. We went to Stone, then I ventured to the Waterfront Park for an afternoon concert, then dinner with Darren at Mona Lisa before heading to Casbah for Kopecky Family Band. After the show, Jeff and I ventured to Black Cat and Epic Future Radness at Til-Two. It was nice not doing anything substantial on Sunday besides lazing around the house to get ready for the huge week ahead! We have Lykke Li at The North Park Theatre on Monday, I'm working for LP on Wednesday at the Casbah, and the weekend is packed with stuff to do and my birthday. Monday archives after the jump.

Things To Do In San Diego: September 19-21, 2014

Finn and Jake say it best with an "arrmiigard". Yes, that is OMG to the rest of us and I am effed in the head when it comes to adequate sleep because, you know, I work at The North Park Theatre and The Casbah, and both entities love to spring last minute shows on me and make sure I'm flooding social media. So how about me giving you a preview? Today we announce an amazing band doing a Rick James tribute and tomorrow I get to announce lesbian twin sisters for an upcoming show. Um, yeah. Buy your tickets because these will sell out. Saturday and Sunday listings are after the jump.

Things To Do In San Diego: September 15-18, 2014

It was a great weekend with San Diego Music Thing, although the blistering heat has been brutal. I'm looking forward to signing up Nova for ice skating lessons just so we can cool down in the icebox of a room. I'm also looking forward to at least two beach days with the awesome 70 degree water. I'm looking forward to some great shows this week, including Sebadoh, The Tree Ring, the sold out Breeders show, and Gardens & Villa. Monday through Thursday archives are after the jump.

Things To Do In San Diego: September 12-14, 2014

I'm at The North Park Theatre and we're about half an hour away from door time so things are pretty nutso around here. I've added in some of the lineup changes for San Diego Music Thing. Friday through Sunday archives are after the jump.

San Diego Music Thing In Full Swing (Lineup Changes Attached)

I am not going to lie, this week has been exhausting so I didn't make it to any of the panels today. I did, however, make it in time to catch Jesse LaMonaca's short solo set on the patio, grab my badges, and chat with Halloran for a while. I heard that Moby cancelled because of a train delay. Supposedly SDMT offered to send a car to LA to bring him down and he responded, "I don't do cars" which is kind of a genius response to everything one wants to be excused from.

We've also had a couple lineup changes for various reasons. Some Ember dropped out at The North Park Theatre and have been replaced by Tropical Popsicle. Here are the set times:

7 PM Doors
7:40-8:10 PM Tropical Popsicle
8:40-9:15 PM Destruction Unit
9:35-10:50 PM The Liars

Deap Vally dropped out at Casbah, so they've been replaced by The Loons. Anyone in attendance will get a wristband upgrade for both days of San Diego Music Thing.
8:30 pm Doors
9:00 Black Taxi
10:00 Mystic Braves
11:05 Wild Wild Wets
12:15 The Loons
Schitzophonics perform between sets in the Atari Lounge

On Saturday, Retox dropped off the bill at The Irenic and have been replaced by The New Kinetics. Here are revised set times for that show:
Doors- 7 PM
7:20-7:50 PM- GRMLN
8:10-8:40- The Frights
9-9:30- The New Kinetics
9:45-10:30 - Cherry Glazerr

Hopefully there aren't too many more changes and we can settle in for a fun weekend of music.

Drive Like Jehu Video Compilation

I don't often get messages through my YouTube channel, but today something awesome happened. I got this message from Fabio Cunha:
Regarding your Drive Like Jehu footage:
Hey there... I took the liberty to download your footage along with many others from their reunion concert in San Diego. I edited the full concert utilizing many camera angles and syncronized it to the best sounding video I could find.
I am writing to you because although I didn't ask you for permission I would like to invite you to see it before I make it public. I did this for the greater good and to share with many other fans of the band. I saw them live once many years ago and could not make it to San Diego for the reunion.
Anyway, I hope you like the way the video turned out and hope that you don't mind me posting it. I wrote a disclaimer at the beginning of the video thanking all the youtube users whom I took the videos from. Check it out, Thx!

Anyway, I think this is pretty awesome, although my shaky handheld footage doesn't really compare to the tripod angles. For your viewing pleasure.

Things To Do In San Diego: September 11, 2014

I just have to stop saying what a crazy week it's been because that seems to be the standard, not just for me but for everyone. We continued to beat the heat this week with some splash time at Balboa Park on Monday, swimming at Ocean Beach on Tuesday, and ice-skating at the Joan Kroc center on Wednesday. That is a pretty awesome deal, by the way. $7 for kids, $10 for adults from 3:30-5:30 and it includes skate rental. I also attended the #OurCityDiscussion on local blogs which was cool, and went to U-31 on Wednesday to catch Jesse LaMonaca because it has been forever. Work was nuts as always. We announced Bear Hands (10/22) and Ziggy Marley (11/1) at The North Park Theatre, and added a ton of shows at Casbah, too. They probably warrant their own post when I have a second to breathe. In the meantime, this weekend is San Diego Music Thing! Just buy a badge so you can do all the fun stuff. I believe that I'm working at the theatre on Friday and Irenic on Saturday, but both end relatively early so I hope to catch some of the other great music around. Thursday archives are after the jump.

Big Bad Buffalo All Up In Your Face

My awesome intern Jordan Krimston is getting a little too much attention and I'm afraid he's going to leave me. I mean, opening for Hot Snakes at The Irenic on Wednesday, an interview on Listen SD, and a feature on SoundDiego? It's of course completely well deserved and he's one of the hardest working musicians I know of - did you know he performs with The School Of Rock All Stars and played Lollapalooza this year? And that he earned the Louis Armstrong Jazz Musician Award at Helix High? Yeah, he's kind of a big deal.

Things To Do In San Diego: September 7-11, 2014

I'm so excited for Independence Jam. It was two years ago that I took Darren to the show, and even though we'd been hanging out, that day was especially magical and  pretty much knew he was the guy for me. The lineup this year is especially awesome and I can't wait to see Wild Cub since I missed their HoB show earlier this summer.  I think we're going to Coaster up, so maybe we'll see you there. Sunday through Thursday archives are after the jump.

Things To Do In San Diego: September 5-7, 2014

This week has been nutso. Just some newsy stuff: Dawes is sold out, GBH moved from The Casbah on Tuesday to The Hideout on Thursday, Flyleaf was just announced at The North Park Theatre and tickets are on sale now, and Flying Lotus went on sale today. I am going to try and have an internet free afternoon, so maybe I'll catch you tonight at the Casbah or on Sunday at FM 94/9 Independence Jam. Friday through Sunday archives are after the jump.

Things To Do In San Diego: September 4, 2014

This week has been CRAZY! Maybe a normal week for everyone, but since I don't write the big diary posts so much anymore, let me tell you how it has been. The ups: My videos from Drive Like Jehu were posted on Stereogum.com & Pitchfork.com. The downside? No credit given. The good: I was named in the top 10 bloggers of San Diego by Our City. The bad, I made a joke about First Day of School Photos with Chalkboards (believe me, it's a thing), and one of my longest lifetime friends went apeshit on Facebook and told me to "stick to nightlife blogging and leave the mom blogs to real moms." and also, because I am a "know it all" I should just shut up. Ouch and Bite Me. I really don't have the time or energy to address former friends other than to say life is amazing, and I hope you find happiness somewhere in your journey. Thanks for making our breakup so easy.

In the meantime, Casbah announced a show with Dawes (which is going to sell out in a heartbeat, so get on it), and The North Park Theatre announced a show with Flying Lotus. Between Casbah, Irenic, The North Park Theatre, and all of our other shows, it is awesome when I get a date night with Darren. Wednesday was awesome and I can't wait for Independence Jam on Sunday. Thursday archives are after the jump:

Video: Drive Like Jehu @ Balboa Park Organ Pavilion, 8.31.2014

Today was awesome. That is all I can really say. I did my best to shoot around other photogs but whatever. Here is my video perspective of Drive Like Jehu at the Balboa Park Organ Pavilion. I hear that the best way to experience the organ portion of the music was somewhere near the Japanese Tea Garden. I'm sure 74 people might have better footage. After all of this, I hope everyone understands there was nothing "free" about this show, and people went out of pocket to make it happen. In return, support Bar Pink, support The Organ Society, support Balboa Park, and write emails and letters to your councilpeople to let them know how amazing this was, how you support it, and how it should happen again in the future.

Update: Great articles and photos being shared...I like this one with Diffuser for the setlist, thought calling Dang "an employee at a local bar" is the understatement of the year, and perhaps the author doesn't know the story of Bar Pink and all the owners and that this whole thing was out of pocket for the band and bar. I also really love these photos by Max Nanis on Twitter. Kelly Davis of CityBeat was next to me for part of the show and then maneuvered around for some great shots. If anyone else wants to share, send me your links.
