Things To Do In San Diego: Wednesday, September 30-Sunday, October 4, 2015

I have to thank everyone who reached out to me for my birthday on Monday. It was truly a great day and night. Darren took me to dinner at Il Postino and then we went to Radiohead Undercover at the Office, and honestly the music was amazing. The band was so on point and everyone who sang sounded incredible. And, as Darren pointed out, if I had a birthday party, pretty much everyone in that room would've been invited, so it was a perfect place to celebrate. Tuesday was all over the place with some meetings and such, but Darren and I did participate in the #PinkOut at Balboa Park to show our support for Planned Parenthood, and then got some time to visit with my family in Coronado. There are some great shows this week and I wanted to update a couple listings, including Grande Ole Office tonight at the Office, but Thursday through Sunday listings are after the jump.

Things To Do In San Diego: Monday, September 28- Tuesday, September 29, 2015

It's my birthday and while Darren and I had a great weekend together, it didn't go exactly according to plan. After the amazing Death Cab For Cutie show, we made it to the Casbah for the tail end of The Coathangers, then I stayed up till sunrise on Saturday trying to get organized with work. On Saturday we had an early dinner commitment, which meant we only spent a couple hours at Adams Avenue on Saturday night, followed by the super fun Day Wave show at Soda Bar. On Sunday I had family in town, so we hung out at Seaport Village and  intended to follow at Adams Avenue, but the heat got the best of us and we zonked out until I got a last minute call to work for Naked Raygun at the Casbah. Not exactly a dream birthday, but work is work and I certainly get my share of raging nights in year round. It's the end of the month which means many venues haven't updated their calendars, so if I can get around to it later this week, I'll check back on Gallagher's, The Balboa, El Dorado, Ken Club, Lestat's, Sycamore Den, and Whistle Stop. In the meantime, Tuesday through Sunday listings are after the jump.

Things To Do In San Diego: Friday, September 25- Sunday, September 27, 2015

This weekend is so busy, I don't know how I'm going to find all the energy to participate in all the fun while also getting caught up with my email and blog posts. Tonight, I'll be heading to the OAT with Darren for DCFC and hopefully catching either the Casbah or Soda Bar shows after. Tomorrow is Tour De Fat, Adams Avenue Street Fair, with some other personal obligations in between. Sunday is typically my work all day day, but with my birthday on Monday, I have to say I'm not super motivated. We'll take it as it comes, I guess. This week was a good one, and I went to Glass Animals and Systems Officer on Monday, Shamir on Tuesday, Joywave on Wednesday, and The Lemonheads last night. Friday through Sunday archives are after the jump, and I'll try to post a condensed schedule for Adams, too, but otherwise, have a great weekend.

Saturday: Tour De Fat Returns To San Diego

I don't really like just posting press releases verbatim, however I'm running out of time before I head out to DCFC and with my birthday on Monday, I just don't want to spend anymore time online today than I have to. So that being said, I love Tour de Fat and not donating my Mazda back when I had the chance is probably my biggest regret of the last few years. Between this and Adams Avenue Street Fair, San Diego Blues Festival, and Oktoberfest Celebrations kicking off, you should have no shortage of fun stuff to do this weekend.

New Belgium Brewing’s traveling carnival, Tour de Fat, returns to San Diego this Saturday, September 26. The festivities kick off in Golden Hill Park and New Belgium is looking for a car-for-bike swapper – someone willing to swap his or her car keys for a $2,250 stipend to buy a dream bike and live car-free for a year.

Swappers are chosen after submitting an application describing why they are ready to give up their vehicle for the gift of two wheels. Submit your video at: NewBelgium.com/Events/Tour-de-Fat/CarTrader.

The San Diego stop is the ninth of the 2015 Tour de Fat season and will feature eclectic entertainment, yo-yo performances and even vaudeville acts. Everyone 21 and older is invited to sample new and classic favorites from New Belgium including the brewery’s flagship brew, Fat Tire, New Belgium’s latest year-round offering, Slow Ride Session IPA, and selections from the acclaimed Lips of Faith series.

Tour de Fat is free to participants, but beer and merchandise proceeds from the San Diego stop will go to:

San Diego County Bicycle Coalition
San Diego Mountain Biking Association

Last year, the San Diego Tour de Fat stop had approximately 7,000 attendees and raised $45,701. In total, Tour de Fat has raised more than $4 million for cycling-related nonprofits.

Things To Do In San Diego: Monday, September 21-Thursday, September 26, 2015

My FOMO meter was through this roof this weekend as everyone seemed to have a really great time at KAABOO. On the same token, I was relaxed and chill just trying to keep cool in the neighborhood all weekend. Friday night, Darren and I went to the Music Box to see Julieta Venegas. It was a fantastic show, and we ate (a lot) and have to say their food menu is pretty great. We had the shrimp tacos, the mini TJ dogs, the calamari, tempura short ribs, and the ahi poke- all were good though we could've gone with just three options between the two of us. I'm excited to have the venue back in the mix of shows because Anthology was always such a great sounding room. On Saturday night, we linked up with my sister and went to see The Killers at the Observatory. I'm sorry for the bad information, by the way. I don't know who and when the decision was made to open doors at 8:30, but we had it listed at 10pm on tickets and marketing so sorry to anyone who missed The Nervous Wreckords going by my published info. On Sunday I was excited to see Lucy's Fur Coat and then had a work crisis in these listings that was a stupid coding thing that really messed me up. It affected Friday and Saturday listings, and I've gone through and tried to redo them, but if you find any of the listings on the wrong day, please let me know. This is San Diego Restaurant Week, so eat up! Monday through Thursday archives are after the jump.

Things To Do In San Diego: Friday, September 18-Sunday, September 20, 2015

My friends are asking why I'm missing KAABOO this weekend, and the truth is that I didn't feel highly motivated to attend. I missed the press deadline, but in reality I couldn't see losing my whole weekend to the festival. I like and love plenty of the bands on the lineup- I even calculated and have seen over 40 of the bands live before- but I just have way too much going on to blow it all off for a festival. I hope everyone going has a great time, that all my friends playing grow their audiences, and that the weather cooperates, but I am going to keep my weekend to a minimum, with Julieta Venegas tonight at Music Box, The Killers tomorrow at Observatory, and Lucy's Fur Coat on Sunday. Saturday and Sunday listings are after the jump.

Local Natives at The Belly Up, 9/17/2015

Last night, Hyundai and Grammy Amplifier teamed up to spotlight an up and coming artist named Cramer. She was great, though I probably wouldn't do a cover of "Come Together" as my second song if I wanted this audience to convert to fans. Anyway, Grammy Amplifier held a contest and three winners emerged, so then they get opening slots for bigger artists, and three showcases are held- one in Chicago, this one at the Belly Up, and another in November at Fun Fun Fun Fest. The show was free, but you had to enter a lottery, though upon arrival, there was no check-in, so anyone in line got in, and I'm not sure the venue reached capacity. It feels like a million years since Local Natives have played San Diego, since their last time around they were opening for Kings of Leon at Sleep Train Amphitheatre. In fact, I think maybe this was my first time seeing them since Nik joined the band, so it was pretty exciting. Here's a fun fact: before they were known outside of LA, I booked Local Natives for my first San Diego Music Thing showcase which they subsequently canceled for a better offer in San Francisco. I seriously love these guys and it was an incredible show. I decided to record most of the show since Darren was unable to join me, but I thought I'd share the playlist for anyone interested. I shot these with my Samsung camera, but I might have to go back to the Sony because I'm not loving the sound, but here they are anyway.

Things To Do San Diego: Wednesday, September 16-Thursday, September 17, 2015

This week has been a bit nuts. When we announce big deal shows like The Killers, the amount of work on my end increases exponentially, so after over 16 hours of work online Monday and finally catching some sleep on Tuesday as it rained outside my bedroom. On Tuesday night, I went to see Jaymay at Soda Bar who was amazing and tonight I'll be working for Mobb Deep. Today's picture is a blurry one of my spider, who's been building a web in our backyard every night for over a week now. Wednesday and Thursday archives are after the jump.

The Oh Hello's Close Out KPRI's Green Flash Summer Concert Series Tonight

The Oh Hello's (Tyler and Maggie Heath front and center, flanked by their tour band)
The Oh Hello's are playing San Diego tonight to close out 2015's KPRI Green Flash Summer Concert series at the Birch Aquarium.  Considering the current landscape of rock music, the only surviving remnant of the folk rock explosion of the early 2010s is a spacier Mumford and Sons.  I know plenty don't miss that genre one bit, but trust me when I say The Oh Hello's, with their exuberant melodies and gift for both subtle and soaring harmonies, will move you with the power of Americana again.

The brother sister duo's eponymous debut EP made me a fan, but it was their full length follow-up Through the Deep, Dark Valley that cemented me as a believer.  I love finding groups of tracks that move with confidence and purpose and this album has two sets that I'll never skip through.  The quickly poignant "Eat You Alive", the buoyant guitars of "Second Child, Restless Child" that sets your "spirit running wild", and lovely "Wishing Well" all fill out the first half of the album with the poise of a band that is truly a family.  This trio is followed by the sublime "The Lament of Eustace Scrubb", "I was Wrong", "I Have Made Mistakes", and "The Truth is a Cave".  Despite the angsty titles, these songs have the melancholy and joy few artists ever experience, much less distill into song.

In a just world, Maggie and Tyler Heath would have put Mumford and Sons out of business by doing this music right.  Perhaps it's for the best they're finally coming to San Diego when their musical kin have faded from view; they're going to leave an incredible impression.

Local favorite Josh Damigo and contributor to SDDialedIn opens the show tonight at the Birch Aquarium in La Jolla.  Tickets at the door for $38.95, doors are at 5:30p, show runs from 6-9p.m.   Check out the title track from The Oh Hello's upcoming album Dear Wormwood after the jump.

Things To Do In San Diego: Monday, September 14-Tuesday, September 15, 2015

What a weekend. Friday night was kind of a bummer and I realized why I prefer to go out on weeknights and work on weekends. But when Saturday came around, we traversed the county, from our home in Normal Heights to a birthday party at Urban Jungle in Santee, then to a bowling party at North Island for my niece, Gia, who turned 4. From there, it was up north to Oceanside where we grabbed dinner at one of the Angelo's, then made it to the Oceanside Pier in time for Metric and Silversun Pickups. We weren't really sure if Nova could handle full sets from the bands, but she loved it, and told us on the way home that it was definitely a "memorable night (she) wouldn't forget". After all that, I went to see Nathaniel Rateliff at Soda Bar, and then closed down the Ken Club, which meant that Sunday was a day of Lifetime movies and other bad TV so I could prepare these listings. Fortunately I finished early enough to have a date night with Darren, where we went to the super odd show at the Casbah, then karaoke at The Hideout. Monday is going to kick my ass with work, but all I can do is maintain composure. Monday and Tuesday archives are after the jump.

Things To Do In San Diego: Saturday, September 12- Sunday, September 13, 2015

This week has been pretty cool. I worked for The Psychedelic Furs and The Church on Wednesday and caught Man Man's insane encore at the Casbah, and then shut down Bar Pink, which not coincidentally, is the night I lost my keys like a big dummy. Thursday night I worked for Johnette Napolitano at the Casbah and since the show ended early, went to hang out with Dev at the Ken Club. Last night Darren and I attempted a night out because it has seriously been awhile, and I realized I'm totally one of those old people now. Every bar was so freaking loud, and blaring horrific R&B and dance music. I was so sad that North Park has so many beer bars, but almost all of them close at 12, and I guess I wasn't cool enough because the bartender at Toronado decided chatting with her friends was more important than pouring beers for any of the masses waiting. So we left and had craft beer at home, which is I guess what you do when you're a music snob and can't drink comfortably listening to crap music. Get off my lawn. Sunday listings are after the jump.

Upcoming Casbah and Casbah Presents (Updated 9/10)

I've been trying to post this list all week, but we keep adding shows, but I guess so it will always be. There are some pretty incredible shows coming up at the Casbah and around town, so don't miss out. And even though it isn't music, I'm stoked that we announced the return of comedian Gad Elmaleh at The Irenic. That one will definitely sell out (he sold out two shows there in the spring) so don't wait to buy tickets. He is very funny. This list is so long, it's getting kind of ridiculous, so I've just got the rest of the week, and everything else is after the jump.

Thu Sep 10 - Johnette Napolitano (of Concrete Blonde), Laurie Sargent @ Casbah

Thu Sep 10 - Get Up Kids @ Observatory North Park

Fri Sep 11 - Mystic Braves, Muscle Beech, The Creation Factory, Amerikan Bear @ Casbah

Sat Sep 12 - Mr. Tube & The Flying Objects, The Creepy Creeps, Tropical Popsicle @ Casbah

Sat Sep 12 - Destruction Unit, Die Mißbildungen Des Menschen @ The Hideout

Sun Sep 13 - Willis Earl Beale, Like A Villain, Tori Roze and the Hot Mess @ Casbah

FM 94/9 Loud At with Silversun Pickups (8/20/2015)

A few weeks ago, we had the pleasure of attending one of FM 94/9's "Loud @" private sessions at the House of Blues Voodoo Room. What was fitting was that though I have seen Silversun Pickups probably a dozen or more times, my first time ever seeing them was in the same room (though Brian told me their first SD show was actually at the Casbah opening for Brendan Bensen). I have to say we were pretty spoiled because while the rest of the crowd assembled in the bar, we were allowed to be in the room while Nikki and Brian soundchecked. In fact, I was helping Nova with her homework as Darren parked the car and then joined us inside, which is always fun being privy to their banter, and just hearing the songs so pure without anyone standing in front of you or talking over the music. We got to chit chat a little before they opened the doors and let everyone in, and I have to say it was pretty great hearing their songs so intimately again. It was also pretty rad getting to share the moment with Nova, who came up while I was recording and started taking photos with my phone. After the set, she asked me if we would be able to see Silversun Pickups again. In fact, we'll be seeing them this Saturday at the Oceanside Pier for FM 94/9 Independence Jam. (Along with Metric, who I interviewed on NBC SoundDiego here.) I'm a little surprised there are still tickets available, to be honest, but there are and you can get them here.

Anyway, I was really lagging on posting these videos but the day this was filmed, I also worked for The Drums at the Irenic and then went to the Casbah for Rocky Votolato, Dave Hause, and Chris Farren, and have pretty much been swamped between then and now. In fact, I'm posting this as I'm slinging merch for The Church and Psychedelic Furs at The Observatory, and even so only because I'm procrastinating doing my actual work. So finally, my four videos from their set are below in the playlist. They played "Lazy Eye", "The Pit", "The Royal We", and their new single "Nightlight". I have a full concert of theirs from 2012 at The Observatory Santa Ana and another from 2012 at The Belly Up if you're really feeling their vibe.

Things To Do In San Diego: Tuesday, September 8-Friday, September 11, 2015

I have to say that Labor Day weekend was kinda nuts. Nova had a four day weekend, so on Thursday after school we took Ficus to Ocean Beach, and after swimming where we discovered that Darren lost his keys and he had to break into our car and then we ended up getting the keys back because they had been turned into the lifeguards. That night I went to the Casbah for The Donkeys, Big Search, and Oh, Spirit. On Friday I worked at the DaM-Funk show, and Saturday we met up with my sister at the Waterfront Park and later hat night I went to Awesome Fest at Soda Bar. Sunday we spent the day with my parents on vacation island and we had such a good time we went back on Labor Day, but only after an attempt to hang out at Admiral Baker Park, which was all my dad wanted for his birthday, but it was hot af and the pool was closed. Last Christmas Eve, I was sure that my dad wasn't going to make it to Christmas. He was in the hospital, his eyes were lost, his heart and lungs were being crushed by fluid in his body. His doctor switched up his medication which ultimately saved his life. He was in rehab for awhile, and he still has major health issues, but ever since they bought their mini Winnie, my dad is getting out of the hose, seeing more sights in San Diego than he's seen in the last twenty years. This isn't a great photo because we're in weird shadows and all, but for my whole family to be together, for my dad to be with all of us on his 67th birthday, was a pretty awesome way to spend Labor Day. Tuesday through Friday archives are after the jump.

Things To Do In San Diego: Wednesday, September 2-Monday, September 7, 2015

I haven't hit any music the past few days, but I think the rest of the week might get a bit busy with so many options for tonight, then Awesome Fest, and I'm working at DaM-Funk on Friday, and hoping to catch Cat Power with Willy Mason on Sunday. We'll see what the days bring. In the meantime, we went to the San Diego Zoo Safari Park to catch it one last time before they start closing earlier. Nova loves climbing and jumping and I love playing with my camera and there were probably fewer than 100 people in the entire park when we arrived around 4pm, so it was quite glorious. This little guy is an echidna, also known as an Australian anteater, whose nearest relative is a duckbilled platypus. I've added in listings where they became available, but some venues just like to keep their calendars a mystery. Wednesday through Monday archives are after the jump.

Lou Niles' "In Your Neighborhood" Debut Episode!

When I was in high school, I lived for Sundays. I'd set my VCR for MTV's 120 Minutes, and I'd make sure I had blank cassettes to record Lou Niles on Loudspeaker on 91X. I'd set a timer so I could flip the cassette at the right time, and I remember falling in love with San Diego music, even though there were only a few places as an underager to actually experience it, (especially when said underager got busted with a 'minor in possession' and pretty much banned from Soma by her parents). Lou is back on the Loudspeaker team and active in the music scene once again, and is now doing weekly episodes of In Your Neighborhood with Lou Niles. This first episode cover's Bill Perrine's super rad docmentary, It's Gonna Blow: San Diego's Music Underground 1986-1996, which has been shown around town and is getting traction in various film festivals around the country, too. I love these little bites of San Diego life and hope that Lou continues to bring interesting music bites on a consistent basis.
