Things To Do In San Diego: Monday, February 29-Thursday, March 3, 2016

We're at the end of the month, which means that Gallagher's, Sycamore Den, and Whistle Stop haven't yet updated. I can't blame them, because it has been a crazy busy week. We had a good one, with The English Beat at the Casbah on Friday. And for Darren's birthday, we had a nice dinner at Casa Adams, I worked at the Irenic or a couple hours then we watched the rest of Julien Baker, then hopped around to West Coast Tavern, Hess Brewery, Lucha Libre, and The Hideout. It was a great night no doubt. There's a lot of good stuff this week, including a DoSD sponsored show at Soda Bar on Tuesday. Monday through Thursday archives are after the jump.

Dave Wakeling was not easy to shoot at the sold out show on Friday

Things To Do In San Diego: Friday, February 26-Sunday, February 28, 2016

The weekend is finally here and I couldn't be more ready for it, though Nova has had a fever the past couple days, so hopefully she's better soon. It has been a week of ups and down but mostly ups...our DoSD launch was amazing and on a personal front, we got some legal business handled that has been nothing but misery for a long time. But mostly I just wanted to update because Saturday is Darren's birthday and he deserves some recognition for being the most supportive, loving, generous, and even keeled person that he is. So happy birthday, my love, thank you for making every day an adventure. There are a ton of shows this weekend. I'll be at English Beat tonight, then working at Julien Baker tomorrow, and possibly catching Cave Singers on Sunday. Among all that, hopefully we've got some nice sunshine, beach time, hike time and more on the agenda. Saturday and Sunday listings are after the jump.

Upcoming Casbah & Casbah Presents Shows (Updated 2.23.2016)

As you have probably noticed by now-- as if I haven't mentioned it enough-- the Casbah has a new website. I'm not gonna lie, it's been super frustrating because I haven't really been fully brought up to speed on some updates (which is why there's a RATATAT poster from last year still on the site!!), but we'll get it all dialed in and I will learn to accept change, and I will leave sddialedin.com the same it's always been because I'm stubborn and I don't like change when it's not forced upon me. So anyway, I haven't updated this list in a couple weeks because there was a whole bunch of updating to do on the actual site and cross referencing and making sure shows weren't missing, etc. etc. It's probably still not perfect, and I still have to go in and add some Observatory shows on to the Casbah site and in this list, but in the meantime, here's the list. And FRIGHTENED RABBIT are coming back! So yeah, lots of good shows below. March shows and beyond are after the jump.

Things To Do In San Diego: Monday, February 22-Thursday, February 25, 2016

I went into the weekend feeling super accomplished. I felt like I got work mostly caught up but it was nice to have a fun Friday out without feeling so daunted. I went to Bag Raiders for a little while, then headed to the Casbah in hopes of catching Oh, Spirit. By the time I arrived, they were done, but Deep Sea Diver and Radiation City were both great and I hung out at the Ken Club after that. Saturday was a chill day, but after dinner I was whacked over the head with a migraine and sadly this meant no Dr. Dog or Autograf for me. I was in bed by 9pm and eventually the misery wore off but I was already committed to sleep by that point. Sunday was a promo radio night for me as I went on 91X and The Local 94/9 to promote our DoSD launch and event. Don't forget to RSVP here. Monday through Thursday archives are after the jump.

Friday Night Preview: Bag Raiders at The Observatory North Park 2.19.2016

I like to think that I pay attention to music trends, but as each year passes and bands come through the Observatory, I realize I'm just not in the loop with genres out of my wheelhouse. Bag Raiders is one of those bands that completely escaped my radar until they were booked and look, you're not getting a suddenly new me, but the jams are positive, and kinda remind me of old 70s and 80s dance grooves I'd hear my parents listen to as a very, very young child. Think a modern spin that harkens back to Earth Wind and Fire, Nile Rodgers, but with a modern spin that will get a dancefloor moving. And I'm certainly all for bands that create electronic music with live instruments. Some listening links are below, but if you just want to buy tickets, grab them here.

Bag Raiders perform on Friday, February 19 at the Observatory North Park.
This is an all ages show with doors at 7pm. (All ages shows have an 11pm curfew)

Check out Bag Raiders here:

(From Bag Raiders Press Release)
It’s been a minute since their last transmission, but the chakras are finally aligned for the return of Bag Raiders. Amassing a stack of music since we last heard from them in 2010, the LA transplants (via Australia) christen their comeback with the release of a second EP of premium cuts, Friend Inside, released worldwide December 11.

Friend Inside features a triple dose of infectious and radiant electronic pop that dances across the spectrum, from positive to chilling to downright ecstatic. Friend Inside follows on from the Waterfalls EP that was released earlier
in 2015 to great acclaim with all three of the tracks (Waterfalls, Vapour Trails, and Wonderland) landing in the TOP 10 on Hype Machine’s Popular Chart and marked the comeback of Bag Raiders, who originally broke in 2010 with their certified GOLD self-titled debut album, an ARIA-nominated affair that included mega-hit “Shooting Stars”, “Way Back Home” and “Sunlight”.

Bag Raiders also broke ground last summer selling out their live show debut in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and New York. The live show eschews the tides of current trends and exists in a world firmly of its own making. Having always opted for instruments over computers, the show doesn’t abandon the dancefloor, but rather applies the Bag Raiders’ production nous and musical chops to a much broader sound palette featuring live guitar, bass, keys, drums, and vocals.

Things To Do In San Diego: Thursday, February 18-Sunday, February 21, 2016

I don't know about you but this week has been rough. I'm trying to look on the bright side and remember that I'm in the business of entertainment, so in the big scheme of things it's all rather trivial, but it doesn't mean it isn't really stressful at times. Yesterday the new Casbah website was supposed to flip to a new design and it didn't work right, so hopefully that gets sorted out today. I need all of you to be extra eyeballs and alert me if you see shows missing and whatnot. We are also in full gear at DoSD and our Launch Party is next Wednesday at the Casbah with Mrs. Magician, Schizophonics, Birdy Bardot, and the Palace Ballroom. You have to RSVP here to get into the free event. Hopefully all the other b.s. can get under control with the three back to back calls I have today.

I didn't have a chance to write some big gushing tribute to Darren on Valentine's Day, but I would honestly be drowning if he wasn't such an incredible human being, such a strong support system, and such a loving and generous partner. Despite all the stress of the week, we were able to have a great Presidents Day with the girls on the Bay and spent that brutally hot Tuesday afternoon at the beach (because on the positive, I can do about 80% of my work from anywhere), and on Wednesday he got me a foot and shoulder massage and let me take a luxurious nap when I was in full on meltdown mode. Our home would look something like Hoarders if he didn't handle all the unfun stuff, and I've never been with anyone so selfless. His love is so good. This weekend can't come soon enough.

Friday through Sunday emails are after the jump.

Things To Do In San Diego: Monday, February 15-Wednesday, February 17, 2015

It's another holiday weekend, so hopefully you're sleeping in this Monday morning as I intend to do. I had a pretty crazy week, but it was nice having some chill time this weekend. My cousin visited from LA so we had some family time--hanging out in IB on Friday and Shelter Island on Saturday. Nova got to spend a couple nights with my nieces, so Darren and I had a couple rare nights out together. On Friday we went to the Hideout for Peach Kelli Pop which was a really great show, and Saturday we went to the Casbah for John Meeks and Drag The River. On Sunday I laid low until I worked at the Beats Antique show which was okay but went a little later than I'd hoped. I'm hoping to spend today exploring the city in some way...maybe check off some more museums off the Museum Month Pass or head to the beach. Mostly I just want to not have to be anywhere at anytime, even if just for a day. Monday through Wednesday archives are after the jump.

Photos: San Diego Opera presents TOSCA

I have to say that I kinda had the coolest Wednesday night ever. I haven't been to the San Diego Opera in a few years, and if I remember correctly, the last show I saw was an early Saturday matinee with Robin Roth who had to keep shaking me awake as I was falling asleep from a very indulgent Friday night. Probably no coincidence I hadn't been invited back in awhile. But this time around, the new social media guy reached out and it was an offer too good to refuse: it was a dress rehearsal which means, it's okay to take photos! and it's okay to be on your phone! and you can live tweet if you want! and you can come and go as you please! and we don't even expect you to stay the whole show! and there's only like 30 people in a room that can hold 3,000!

Needless to say, it was a win in every way possible. On top of all that, the show was Tosca, an Italian opera...to me the most beautiful language to experience opera and I like to feel like little miss smarty pants since I took a year of Italian in high school, so there are some long dramatic segments where I didn't have to read the subtitles. Hooray me.

I'm super under the gun with deadlines and stuff, so in true Rosey fashion, I had my laptop and was working every moment I could before and between acts. I was watching the "real" media people and they actually have these giant lapboards that rest on the row in front to make for a workspace. I aspire to one day be one of those people...instead of blogging at home to Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, I'll be sitting there with my laptop as I'm hearing the most beautiful singing in the world accompanied by the amazing San Diego Symphony. Another super cool thing, since it was a dress rehearsal, was that there were moments when the musicians were corrected by the conductor, or the performers had to return back to their marks to pick up on a scene and do it over. It was really one of the coolest things I've experienced in a long time. Without further ado, here are some of my photos of the amazing Tosca (after the jump. Spoiler Alert!)

Photos: Rachel Platten at The Observatory North Park, 2.9.2016

I had no intention of going to see Rachel Platten perform at the Observatory, but then I was texting our production manager about set times and then he offered for me to shoot, and so an hour later, there I was. Rachel Platten is not the typical artist that I'm into, but for a pop artist, the woman has some serious pipes. Her songs lean more toward strong female messages and girl power that spoke to the hundreds of young girls who were screaming in the room. I promised Nova I'd be home before her bedtime, so I didn't stay for the whole show which meant that I wasn't there for the hit, "Fight Song", but I can be pretty sure that the entire room sang word for word right along with Rachel. More pictures after the jump.

Set List:
Beating Me Up/ Dog Days mash up
Lone Ranger
Stand By You
Love Yourself (Justin Bieber cover)
Astronauts
You Don't Know My Heart
Angels in Chelsea
Better Place
Speechless
Don't You Worry Child
Hallelujah
Fight Song

Upcoming Observatory Shows (Updated 2.8.2016)

I keep chatting with my industry friends and they're telling me that this is still the slow season, but I'll tell you in no way does it feel that way to me. I'm definitely going out less, but that's got a lot more to do with having Nova full time, me being old, working too many jobs (4 plus this site), and taking advantage of sleep when I can get it, than it does with an overall slow down of the music scene. It will definitely be getting much, much busier, so if this is slow, enjoy it while you can. This week, The Observatory announced new shows with XXYYXX (3.11), Young Thug (3.13), FKJ (3.19), The Front Bottoms (4.18), and X with Los Lobos (5.8). Ticket links are all below. February midmonth shows and beyond are after the jump.

Things To Do In San Diego: Monday, February 8-Sunday, February 14, 2016

It's been a long time since I've had hard and fast deadlines approaching, and I'm not really dealing with the pressure. It was a great weekend and I allowed myself to step away from my laptop most of the weekend, but that only means this week is like full on pressure cooker status. On Friday, we used our Museum Month pass and went to the Japanese Tea & Friendship Garden ($11.50 for the three of us with the discount) and had an awesome dinner at West Coast Tavern before I had to work for Jhene Aiko at the Observatory. I made it down to Saintseneca after work, and had some Ken Club time, too, but as it turns out, that was my only night out all weekend. On Saturday we mostly lounged around until I got called to work at Music Box last minute. On our way down, I was canceled, so we had dinner at The Balboa, which might be Nova's new favorite burger. PMS knocked me down that night and I just curled up at home watching Bad Words on HBO Go. On Sunday morning, Nova had soccer, then we grabbed lunch at Grand Ole Asado & BBQ before taking Ficus to OB dog beach, which wasn't empty but definitely nice and wide open during the game. This week has a lot going on--West Coast Tavern is doing an Industry New Years, there are a ton of great shows, and we're having our first DoSD event at the Whistle Stop. Tuesday through Sunday listings are after the jump.

Things To Do In San Diego: Friday, February 5-Sunday, February 7, 2016

I have been a bit out of sorts this week. Nova stayed home sick from school two days this week, and that certainly throws a wrench in things when you work from home. Plus it seems I spent most of my time in meetings and on calls instead of actually getting work done, which is super frustrating. Tonight I'll be working at the Observatory for Jhene Aiko and in spite of the fact that you can't get tickets online, I heard that they held some for box office sales, so I'd recommend getting there at 5 if you need to snag tickets at the last minute. I haven't gotten out much this week, but I did go to the Cure tribute on Wednesday at the Office. It was a pretty rad night and I look forward to some of the other upcoming tributes and Undercovers. Below is a photo shot from my Samsung Note 5, because my camera isn't within my reach at the moment. See? Out of sorts. Friday through Sunday archives are after the jump.

Macy's & San Diego Museum Council Team Up for Museum Month

As anyone with a family can atest, the museums of San Diego can often feel out of reach. Basic entry can be pricey, add the extra charge for special exhibits, and then the negotiating with the kids that it will be fun! when they feel like a 10 minute walk through is sufficient, and well, good luck getting museums in your life. Of course, you can brave the hoards on free Tuesdays at Balboa Park, but with museums closing before most people's workdays end, you're basically enjoying the arts with every stroller toting stay-at-home mom. Enter Museum Month, an attempt to make these institutions more accessible. The pass is free at any Macy's register just for the asking (I picked one up yesterday) and each pass is good for up to four admissions at half price. Below is the official (less-cynical) description of Museum Month. Bonus: Every museum month pass has a coupon for Macy's and a discount code to get an annual subscription of San Diego Magazine for only $8.

EVENT DATE: February 1-29, 2016

LOCATION: Participating museums

COST: 50% off admission with pass

Arts, entertainment and culture collide for Macy’s Museum Month in San Diego. This February the San Diego Museum Council and Macy’s have teamed up again for Museum Month, giving patrons a chance to discover what’s new at more than 40 area museums with savings only seen once a year.

Participants can pick up a Museum Month Pass at any area Macy’s store to enjoy half-off admission to all of the participating museums through the entire month of February. Plus, with 2016 being a leap year, you get an extra day to enjoy museum going.

Passes will be available beginning February 1 at all San Diego, Temecula and Imperial Valley Macy’s. Click here to find the store nearest you.

Guests with a pass can bring up to three people to participating museums to receive half-off admission for the entire party. Additional fees may apply for special exhibitions. Each pass also features an exclusive $10 coupon off any $30 or more at Macy’s.

Remember to keep your pass all month long and LEAP to a few new museums!

Things To Do In San Diego: Monday, February 1-Thursday, February 4, 2016

It was a pretty mellow weekend compared to the past few weeks. I sold merch for Hood Internet on Friday night and then for Mike Gordon on Saturday. The latter was rough...18 boxes of merch and I had to be there two hours before doors, so all told it was almost an 8 hour shift and I had to miss The Silent Comedy at the Casbah, but I gotta do what I gotta do. I will say the best thing I did all weekend was stopping by The Balboa for burgers on Sunday. I hadn't been for ages, and it passed Nova's particular palate and I'm stoked to add it into the rotation of restaurants where she'll eat.

It's the first of the month, so I'll have to update these listings when I get them from Bar Pink, Gallagher's, Che Cafe, and Whistle Stop. Unfortunately, the national religion of football seems to be sucking all of the nightlife out of the city, so you'll see there aren't a whole lot of shows this week compared to normal, but there are still some gems if you feel like braving the wild weather. I'm not saying that in a "nobody knows how to drive in the rain" kind of way, but of legitimate concern with all of our now dying and dead trees that haven't been watered toppling over, branches snapping off of eucalyptus, and palm fronds flailing all over the roads. Be safe out there and condolences to the Carano family who lost San Diego drummer Nicki Carano today as a tree toppled and crushed her car in PB on Sunday. Tuesday through Sunday listings are after the jump.
