High In The Streets- A Debut Novel by Matthew Binder

For some of you who have been readers of this site for years, you probably recall my early days reviewing local band Vinyl Radio. Well the former frontman, Matthew Binder, has been busy writing and has now published a novel, High In The Streets. Our mutual friend, lawyer, and one of the smartest people I know, David Lizerbram, has written a review and I agreed to share it with all of you. You should definitely check out the book, which you can purchase on Amazon here.

High in the Streets, Matthew Binder’s auspicious debut novel, smells like whiskey and cigarettes. Lou Brown, our protagonist of sorts, is a once-successful writer in LA. Several years after hitting it big with his own autobiographical first book, he finds himself at a loss. He has a serious drinking problem, a wife he hardly recognizes in a house he never wanted in the first place, and an ex-athlete best friend, Cliff, who’s in even worse shape than he is.

Lou’s attempts to obliterate his sorrows unfold in a series of funny, surprising, and unexpectedly moving vignettes. He sees himself as one of the many downtrodden, lost souls living in the shadow of Hollywood, but nobody is quite who they seem to be.

Binder’s characters seek redemption everywhere they can: money, fame, narcotic ecstasy, physical fitness, friendship, a father and child reunion. A trendy nightclub and a seedy motel and a beautifully articulated last-chance prizefight. He lures us into Lou’s story with all of its squalid glamor, and then pulls the curtain away to show the open sores beneath the character’s macho posturing and his tragic hero self-image. What happens to someone who just doesn’t fit into mainstream society anymore…and maybe never did?

Things To Do In San Diego: Monday, March 28-Thursday, March 31, 2016

It was quite a weekend. On Friday, Darren and I went to see my nieces in Sleeping Beauty, then followed with Sunflower Bean at the Che Cafe. I hadn't been there in probably a decade, but glad to see nothing's changed. On Saturday we caught Hey Marseilles and Hibou at Soda Bar, then closed down the night at the Ken Club and late night takeout from Hong Kong. Sunday was awesome as I interviewed Rob Crow before Rob Crow's Gloomy Place performed at the Casbah, and then went to karaoke after the show. This week should be a lot more mellow than last week was. I'll be working at the Irenic on Tuesday, Friday, and Saturday, while hitting up a couple shows in between. And Nova returns on Wednesday, so hopefully work is mellow, too, so we can make the most of the rest of her spring break. Monday through Thursday listings are after the jump. And don't forget, if you need to plan out further than Sunday, you can always check out DoSD.com and look at future dates with the pull down calendar feature.

Things To Do In San Diego: Monday, March 21-Friday, March 25, 2016

It was a beautiful weekend in San Diego. Darren's mom went back to Hercules and it was sad to see her go, but we were also happy that Nova is officially on Spring Break. It's just nice to not have to do the back and forth to school for a couple weeks. I went to the Junior Boys show on Friday, but skipped shows the remainder of the weekend, partially because this week is going to be so busy. I guess the most eventful thing was Nova's piano recital on Sunday. It was at the Point Loma Library, and when it was over we went to the tidepools at Cabrillo Monument then grabbed dinner at Point Loma Sea Foods where the seals and pelicans were enjoying all the fish remains of the sportfisherman. So besides my usual workload this week, Nova leaves on Wednesday for a week. I'll be working at Ra Ra Riot on Tuesday and Polica on Wednesday. Then on Thursday we have a massive SoundDiego Live at the Music Box with Little Hurricane. I'm not quite sure where I'll end up Friday, but with Hey Marseilles on Saturday and Rob Crow's Gloomy Place on Sunday, it's gonna be a good week of music, and with Nova gone, Darren might get to make some appearances, too. Happy spring break to those of you who get one. Monday through Friday archives are after the jump.

Things To Do In San Diego: Friday, March 18-Sunday, March 20, 2016

This week has been just as busy as I expected. Darren's mom came to town for a spontaneous trip which was really nice, minus the part where Darren tore a calf muscle and has been left limping this week. I have to say, it's kind of adorable though, since the same thing happened to me when we first started dating and he did everything for me back then as I ended up on crutches for a few weeks. So Billie arrived on Tuesday and we went to the Zoo for a few hours before I went to the Jose Gonzalez show at California Center for the Arts Escondido. On Wednesday, I worked while they went to Mission Trails, but entertained her as he helped out at Nova's school (when that injury occurred). We went to La Jolla Cove to see the Sea Lions and that evening we had a big family dinner. My family has always missed being able to meet Billie, so that was quite nice (at Volare which is maybe my new favorite place even though it's been there forever). Then Thursday I had some work meetings and such but we ran around a little bit, got Nova from school, had dinner at West Coast Tavern, and then had Nova's Open House. Somehow in all of that, my laptop took a spill, so thanks to Davy Tiltwheel for making the repair quick and painless and my laptop downtime minimized. Today Billie flies back home, so hopefully I can knock out my work early to hang out the last few hours. I don't have big plans this weekend but I'm sure we'll be running around to enjoy the few days of Spring Break before Nova flies to the midwest for a week. Saturday and Sunday listings are after the jump.

Things To Do In San Diego: Monday, March 14-Thursday, March 17, 2016

This weekend was entirely too short and I'm just not really ready for this week. I had a chill Friday but ended up making up for it on Saturday, as I bounced between the Main Room and Voodoo Room of the House of Blues. I caught Dreamers and Arkells upstairs and Kaleo and Firekid downstairs. After that, I hung out for Saved By The 90s at the Casbah, then closed it down at the Ken Club. Sunday was a little bit of a bummer for me, because as much as I wanted to see Dylan LeBlanc at the Belly Up, I had to work at the Irenic for They Will Destroy Us. I had a ton of work to do anyway, but still, I would've liked to just ignore it all for Dylan. I'll be at the Irenic tonight, at Jose Gonzalez on Tuesday, and then probably laying low the rest of the week because Darren's mom will be in town, Thursday is Nova's open house, and Sunday is Nova's piano recital. Monday through Thursday archives are after the jump.

Things To Do In San Diego: Friday, March 11-Sunday, March 13, 2016

I'm sitting in the Dollhouse watching Nova skate with her new friend Lunatic Eclipse so I thought I'd update listings for the weekend. I had a great night Wednesday, stopping by the Music Box to catch Jesse Lamonaca and the Dime Novels before heading to the Casbah. Fun fact: Jesse and Darren have the same birthday. Anyway, Grampa Drew, Spero, and Miner all put on a great show, and it was nice to hang with Jake at Bar Pink after that. The fun nights always mean hunkered down work days the next day so Thursday was mellow, I worked while Nova played at San Carlos park. I wanted to make Kitten but then we decided Darren would go, and when the time acually rolled around, I was steeped in work and he was soundly asleep. Full time dadding ain't easy. This weekend has a grip of rad shows and though I haven't committed to anything, I'm having a dilemma whether I should have someone cover my shift at The Irenic on Sunday so that I can do see Dylan LeBlanc at the Belly Up. I love that kid. Anyway, Saturday and Sunday listings are after the jump.

Show Preview: Kitten @ The Casbah - Thursday, March 10th

Kitten is a band from LA fronted by 21-year old Chloe Chaidez that specializes in a dark brand of pop-leaning indie rock not far on the spectrum from the likes of Sky Ferreira and Twin Shadow. The current national tour is in support of their new self-released EP “Heaven or Somewhere Between,” which sounds a lot like Belinda Carlisle as produced by Robert Smith, and signals a more focused and mature approach from their earlier releases. Chloe has said it was inspired heavily by British bands Cocteau Twins, Pulp, and Suede on back to the even more classic sounds of Roy Orbison and Phil Spector. While their recorded material might not have the chart-smashing hooks that have made superstars of Charli XCX and Haim, their live show has been well documented as captivating, raw, and unwaveringly energetic. The front woman’s commanding stage presence and stellar vocal abilities will surely have the crowd enraptured on Thursday night as they play their first-ever headlining performance in San Diego at the Casbah. Supporting acts Electric Mudd and Machineheart will kick off the evening.

Things To Do In San Diego: Wednesday, March 9-Thursday, March 10, 2016

There was some snow in our mountains on Monday night, and since Sunday I'd already put in 24 hours of work in by the time the end of Nova's school day came around on Tuesday at 1pm, we decided we could run up to Mount Laguna for a couple hours. I don't suppose there will be a lot more opportunities to do that this year, so we made the best of it and had a good time wandering around the empty campground. (We've been going to El Prado) And there's enough reception on the mountain that I was still able to get back to all of my not-so-urgent email. I just wanted to update because there are so many things to do this week and I know how bogged down my site gets when I have a flurry of Monday posts as I did this week. I'm looking forward to catching Jesse Lamonaca & The Dime Novels at Music Box before I head to the Casbah for Grampa Drew, Spero, and Miner. Then you can most likely find me at Kitten tomorrow, Eleanor Friedberger on Friday, and HoB on Saturday, but I'm sure I'll update again before then. Wednesday-Thursday arcihives are after the jump.

Upcoming Casbah & Casbah Presents Shows (Updated 3.7.2016)

I have list of things that our "account specialist" is working on. That said, if you have problems with the functionality of the Casbah web page, please let me know, especially if you have trouble on the mobile version since it seems to be working fine on my Android but I hear there are issues on ios. Upcoming Shows at the Observatory North Park (Updated 3.8.2017)

The Observatory has had some really good shows of late and some great shows are coming up. Last week, the Observatory added shows with Mayer Hawthorne, Yeasayer, Migos and Father. I was chatting with a friend who was bummed out by the venue, saying that it sucks that you have to drink in West Coast and couldn't drink while watching a show. So I'm going to say this again, in case anyone wasn't aware, that the liquor license has been fully restored to the whole venue, regardless of whether shows are seated or standing, and regardless of whether they're all ages, 18+, or 21+. On top of that, I hear the balcony is under construction, which I guess is going to have VIP tables with bottle service in the near future. Bellow are all of the shows booked at the Observatory...mid-month and beyond are after the jump.

3/8 St. Lucia, Grace Mitchell, 7:30, All Ages

3/9 Waka Flocka Flame with Robb Bank$, 6pm, All Ages

Things To Do In San Diego: Monday, March 7-Tuesday, March 8, 2016

Another eventful weekend is behind us. Actually, after a big night out on Thursday, I was feeling pretty beat down on Friday, but my sister offered to have Nova over for a sleepover so Darren and I dropped in on the Wavves & Best Coast show at the Observatory for a bit but still called it an early night. On Saturday, we went down to the STEM Expo at Petco Park (for non-parents, that is science, technology, engineering and math), then we went to a roller derby bout at the Dollhouse which Nova absolutely loved. After, I went to Casbah for Lower Dens, Ditches, and Spooky Cigarette, then closed the night hanging with Robin at the Ken Club. Sunday was a mellow day, though we took Nova back to the Dollhouse for open skate and had dinner at Pokez. I would have loved to check out Johnny Marr at Belly Up, but work was calling and I just had way too much on my plate for another night out. Such is life sometimes. Don't forget 91X is announcing X-Fest at 8am. Tuesday through Sunday listings are after the jump.

Things To Do In San Diego: Friday, March 4-Sunday, March 6, 2016

It's been an amazing week of music in San Diego and I know it sounds a little crazy, but I'm kinda hoping for some quiet time this weekend. It's gonna be hard though, I'm sure I'll be pulled in multiple directions all weekend long. Besides amazing shows, there's the Audobon's Bird Festival, a STEM event for kids, the Busker Festival, and of course CRSSD will be keeping San Diego thumping all weekend. I was all over the place this week...on Tuesday I worked at Andra Day, then caught Dani Bell & The Tarantist at Soda Bar, on Wednesday I went to see Basia Bulat, and last night I worked at Waxahatchee at the Irenic, then caught Gayle Skidmore and Liza Anne at the Casbah. All were unique and incredible shows, and all were talented and beautiful women. Looking forward to more good stuff to come. Friday through Sunday listings are after the jump.
