Barack Obama Wins A Grammy!

I have to admit, I've been enjoying the Grammys this year. Daft Punk & Kanye killed it. Foo Fighters are rocking as I type. I'm not so much into the awards themselves because I almost always disagree with the academy (I'm not a fan of Amy Winehouse, and she pretty much swept the categories and I really believe that Once was robbed more than once), and I'm more interested in the awards that usually aren't announced during the show. Anyway, the full list of winners is here in case you lack patience like I do.

Some highlights:

Our next president won a Grammy! (Beating out Bill Clinton, fyi)

Best Spoken Word Album (Includes Poetry, Audio Books & Story Telling)

The Audacity Of Hope: Thoughts On Reclaiming The American Dream
Barack Obama[Random House Audio]

Best Comedy Album (For comedy recordings, spoken or musical):

The Distant Future
Flight Of The Conchords
[Sub Pop]

And anyone paying attention- local boys As I Lay Dying lost the best metal category to Slayer. Boo.

Random Notes: The Liars Club, The Night Marchers, Sue Palmer, The Kings of Rhythm and more...

My CityBeat column is cut next week, so I've got some newsy stuff and some links to post:
  • Starting off, I found a review of The Vision of A Dying world from a show they played in the OC. You can read it here.
  • As I Lay Dying will be featured on Fuel TV on January 15. Read the press release here.
  • Louis Mello and Al Guerra have announced the official opening of the new Liar's Club in Alpine. The new location has allowed the business partners to expand their beer offerings so every beer snob should find something to love. For the official grand opening on January 26 & 27 performances are planned by MEX and Bartenders Bible, pending the approval of their entertainment license. And perhaps you didn't know, but Al Guerra was voted the honorary mayor of Alpine. The grand opening will also be a celebration of his title. Can we still just call him Al?
  • Rumors and fake posters have been circulating for Coachella 2008 since early December. Thus far, the only confirmed acts I've seen are Radiohead and The Breeders. I'll do my best to stay on top of announcements but if you find anything, send the press releases my way. I thought 2008 would be the year I gave in an finally attended the festival, but most likely I'll be sitting this year out once again. I just can't muster up any desire to be one among the thousands of attendees to the desert festival. Radiohead has announced plans for a US tour. San Diego will be on the tour, however, official dates have not yet been announced, though we can probably assume it will be just before or just after the Coachella festival.
  • Resurrecting the San Diego scene of the early 90s, here's an article about Drive Like Jehu with a few MP3s for download, along with some archival film footage.
  • And all of those fans of John Reis have been getting big boners over the news that he's put together a new band. The Night Marchers will be playing at Bar Pink Elephant on February 8. Along with Reis (of Drive Like Jehu, Hot Snakes, Rocket From the Crypt) the band features guitarist Gar Wood (Hot Snakes, Beehive and the Barracudas), drummer Jason Kourkounis (Hot Snakes, Mule, Delta 72), and bassist Tommy Kitsos (CPC Gangbangs). The Night Marchers will release their debut full length, titled See You In Magic, on March 26th. It will arrive via Swami and Vagrant Records.

    track listing:

    You've Got Nerve
    Open Your Legs
    Bad Bloods
    And I Keep Holding On

  • Drummer Bill Ray of The Kings of Rhythm (Ike Turner's backing band) and Playground Slap has started a website. Bill writes: "The rules are simple- it's for working musicians (as in if you are out playing in the scene, then this is for you)...No really, we industry folks need a place to gather to discuss REAL issues that affect us. The club scene, musicians needed/looking, good/bad experiences on gigs, etc." Click here for GigSanDiego.

In other Kings of Rhythm News, there will be a special tribute performance honoring Ike Turner happening on January 17th. The show is presented by JZMN productions as part of their Eclectic Collective series. Each show takes place at the Garfield theater at the Jewish Community Center in La Jolla and the proceeds of these concerts
go to Jewish Family Service Child Abuse Prevention Programs. The show will also feature guest appearances from JZMN and Steph Johnson. Since I will be unable to attend the show, I have a pair of tickets to give away. If you are interested in the tickets, please use the e-mail address in the About Me section of this site. Include your full name and phone number and I'll notify the winner on Monday.
  • Lastly, Sue Palmer's "Sophisticated Ladies Revue", will be appearing at Dizzy's (newly located at the San Diego Wine and Culinary, 2nd&J, downtown), on January 19 and will be featuring Toni Price, Janell Rock, Deejha Marie, Laura Jane, April West, Sharon Shufelt, and Evonna Wascinski.

In other Sue news: Sue's nomination for the International Blues Challenge (IBC) award for Best Self Produced Album for 2007 has now reached the final 5! Results will be announced in Memphis on Feb. 2nd. Sue wants to thank Blues Lovers United of San Diego (BLUSD) for submitting her album, her all star band for playing on it (Steve Wilcox, Jonny Viau, Sharon Shufelt, April West, Deejha Marie, Pete Harrison, and guests), PHPRO Music for recording it, Julie Warren for the cover, Candye Kane for the liner notes, Janell Rock for writing "Queen of the Boogie", and San Diego for supporting her all these years.
Click here for her website.. Laura Jane says of Sue, "She is my hero. She is a cancer survivor, has world class talent, has been performing continually in San Diego her whole life. She is also committed to giving opportunities, advice, and support to women in jazz, blues and boogie woogie music and cronicles their careers in her home archive. She rocks!"

I've got some other news but I'll try to pace it out a bit over the next week.

SDMAs Mentioned On MTV.com

Not really news, but it's nice when local bands are mentioned on the same pages talking about Notorious B.I.G. and Britney-

As I Lay Dying clearly have more than a few gasps left — the metal band edged
out Switchfoot, Jason Mraz and others to win the San Diego Music Award for
Artist of the Year. AILD nabbed the same honor in 2005. from mtv.com

Warped Tour 2007 Coors Amphitheatre Photos & Recap

I'll get to wrtiting about SCMX, but first, proper attention must be paid to Friday, which was itself a cool day.

I mentioned before that I had no intention of going to Warped Tour. I arrived shortly after 11, going the back route via the 905 and thus parking on the south side of the venue. I loaded up my flyers and walked all the way around the perimeter of the main Coors lot and stood near the entrance passing the small city of tour buses.

I've never really had experience "flyering" but I stood there with a smile, listening to my iPod while I tried to convince kids to take my flyers. There were some interesting things I noticed about the crowd going in. First, the youngest of the kids get to shows like that early. Later in the day, the older people came through, but the little kids, I mean even like 8 and 9 year olds, were glowing with enthusiasm and happily took my flyers, thanking me and whatnot. The older tween and teen kids have more attitude so there's a little more finessing that needs to happen when trying to get them to take something. They also have no idea how, though they probably try really hard to be unique, they're all very much the same. I know, I was there one day, too. I started noticing how prone to groupthink they were. If a group of 10 or 15 people passed me by, if the first person passing me took a flyer, everyone took a flyer, even stopping so that I could make sure each one got one. On the other hand, if that first person doesn't take the flyer, not one person behind them would, and by the trail end of the group, people would look away, acting like they couldn't see me or just couldn't be bothered. Anyway, I passed out flyers for an hour and a half or so, but when the ground became littered with them, I decided to call it quits. At that point the groupthink was working where people saw the flyers on the ground so the guilt is removed from them dumping on the ground.

I walked the walk back to my car and passed Tim Pyles. By the time I was at my car, he called and had a ticket for me, so I dropped off the flyers and made my way back around to meet him. We hung out in the "beer garden" for a little bit, which was actually the only activity that utilized any of portion of Coors Amphitheater. We wandered a bit, then made our way to watch Meg and Dia. I have read a lot of buzz about them, every one with some comparison to Tegan and Sara, and I guess I can see that comparison. Meg and Dia are a couple cute chicks from SLC and their crowd loved them. We weren't sure what kind of access our wristbands gave us, but it didn't take long to discover we were allowed in backstage areas, so we made our way and watched the band's set from onstage. When the girls busted out a cover of Blind Melon's "No Rain", they kinda won me over.

After their set, we caught a little bit of the Whiskey Dicks who had won a Battle of the Bands the night before that got them their spot.

After we went to the Marquee Club, which was a bar area that had $5 beers. It's called a "VIP" area, but we found out it was for LiveNation VIP wristbands, not the backstage ones we had, but thankfully some of our HOB guys were working it and gave us the proper credentials. This kinda ended up being the way our day went. Check out a band from backstage or sidestage, head back for a beer. Since I'd not planned on being there, I hadn't had any food before the show, so I was careful with the beer and kept loading up with the pretzels from the vip area.

We made our way to catch Buck-O-Nine and it was clear that they should've been on a larger stage for their home town crowd. They played a great mix of their older tracks, the ones that I grew up on back in the day, as well as some from their new album. Afterward we hung out on their bus for a while, getting a nice break from the sun. Shows like this are fun because so many of the bands are fans of the other bands. In this case, the guys were stoked that their bus was next to Adrian Young of No Doubt, though I still don't know why he was there.

After leaving the bus, we made our way to see Fishbone. We managed to get onstage for their performance, too, and they were as good as I always remembered. The crowds throughout the festival never stopped being crazily enthusiastic- crowdsurfing, slamming, moshing, screaming, dancing, what have you.

It was fun being in the backstage area, and were I 15, I probably would've been going nuts, but everyone has that hair, the tats, the band t-shirts, and everyone starts to look alike. Tim introduced me to Tim from As I Lay Dying while Flogging Molly hit the adjacent stage.

It was a day loaded with sun and fun and absolute mayhem. We caught about half the set of As I lay Dying, then wandered some more while Pepper played but by that point I was zonked. Eventually Tim ran into some more friends and headed back on their bus and I called it a day. I was bummed that I didn't stay for Pennywise and Bad Religion, but this old lady needed to get her ass home and some rest for the rest of the night, so I was on my way and home by 7:30. The rest of the night is for another post.

It's Been A Long Day: mTraks & Warped Tour

I went to Coors Amphitheatre this morning at 11 am to distribute flyers for mTraks, and online music site based in San Diego. Passing out flyers is an experience in and of itself. I have a lot of thoughts about it all in the realm of "group think", but as I was leaving, I passed Mr. Tim Pyles who told me he might be able to get me a ticket if I wanted one. By the time I walked around the exterior of the parking lot back to my car, Tim called and told me to come back and meet him.

I had not planned to spend the whole day at Warped Tour, but that's what happened. It was a fun day and there were tons of highlights. We had Marquee Club VIP wristbands and Warped Tour VIP wristbands, so we wandered around watching bands, many of them from onstage or backstage. Pretty cool considering I thought I'd do my "shift" for mTraks and bail. Tim was kind enough to let me be his sidekick for the duration but I finally had to go...I mean, I have plans tonight, ya know?

It's just funny to my how when you least expect it cool things happen. I'm hoping tomorrow will work itself out, but its just funny how if you hope or want or expect something, it usually disappoints. When you expect nothing, doors just open up. Thanks to Tim for everything. Check back later for all my onstage and backstage photos later, but for now, Rosemary needs some sleepy time to get ready for the night ahead.
