Newsy Bits for Wednesday

I'll recap the Casbah show later but for now, just a few things:

First, InSound has a FREE digital compilation CD available for download
here. The compilation has music by Page France, The Twilight Sad, The Sea and Cake, Bright Eyes, Au Revoir Simone, and 10 others. If you make a purchase while you're there, don't forget to use coupon code 'SpringGoodness' for 10% off your purchase.

Second, in 4th grade, some girls in my class formed the Rosey Haters Club. Looks like I get to see a v2.0 in my lifetime: some people didn't like what I had to say about Derek and Josh Mosh in my posting about the show at the Whistle Stop on Friday. If you have a lot of time on your hands and would like to join the playground, click here. Neener-neener.
*****
I watched American Idol last night in it's entirety. I know it sucks, I know it's stupid, so I shouldn't let it piss me off, but for any person who ever searches the web looking for Tim McGraw's "When The Stars Go Blue", may your computer send you an electric shock. The last contestent sang it, and Martina McBride called it "Tim McGraw's song". Ef you. It ain't a Tim McGraw song and it ain't a Corrs or Bono song either. The song "When the Stars Go Blue" is, was, and will always be a Ryan Adams song. (It was on his album Gold). Screw Tim McGraw.

Local Legend Tony Hawk & "local" girl Jewel has gone from living in her VW to a race car driver:

Fast Cars & Superstars - The Gillette Young Guns
Celebrity Race, featuring 12 celebrity drivers (including Jewel, Tony Hawk,
Serena Williams and William Shatner), will debut on Thursday, June 7 at 8 p.m.
ET. Each episode will feature the celebrities training with a Gillette Young
Guns driver for a race against each other in the series finale in July.

Last, the time has come to take action to save Internet Radio. Here, a letter from Tim Westergren, the founder of Pandora. Or, if you're too lazy to read it, just sign the petition here.

Hi, it's Tim from Pandora,

I'm writing today to ask for your help. The survival of Pandora and all of Internet radio is in jeopardy because of a recent decision by the Copyright Royalty Board in Washington, DC to almost triple the licensing fees for Internet radio sites like Pandora. The new royalty rates are irrationally high, more than four times what satellite radio pays, and broadcast radio doesn't pay these at all. Left unchanged, these new royalties will kill every Internet radio site, including Pandora.

In response to these new and unfair fees, we have formed the SaveNetRadio Coalition, a group that includes listeners, artists, labels and webcasters. I hope that you will consider joining us.

Please sign our petition urging your Congressional representative to act to save Internet radio: http://capwiz.com/saveinternetradio/issues/alert/?alertid=9631541

Please feel free to forward this link/email to your friends - the more petitioners we can get, the better.

Understand that we are fully supportive of paying royalties to the artists whose music we play, and have done so since our inception. As a former touring musician myself, I'm no stranger to the challenges facing working musicians. The issue we have with the recent ruling is that it puts the cost of streaming far out of the range of ANY webcaster's business potential.

I hope you'll take just a few minutes to sign our petition - it WILL make a difference. As a young industry, we do not have the lobbying power of the RIAA. You, our listeners, are by far our biggest and most influential allies.

As always, and now more than ever, thank you for your support.

The main talent booker for the newly reopened Starlight Bowl has suffered a heart attack. Best wishes to her for a speedy recovery. The following was an email sent to the bands who were scheduled to play on April 15th.

"With deep regrets we have just this evening been informed that Starlight Bowl's Operations manager Susan Suffecool is recovering from a heart attack she has suffered a few days prior and tomorrow's show has been cancelled.

Your patience and thoughts and/or prayers for a speedy recovery are appreciated..."

that's all I've got. Happy Monday.

More Monday News: Vinyl Radio, Insound, VMix

In the ever shuffling of drummers for Vinyl Radio, Dusty, former drummer of Cape May, is going to be joining the band. The band decided he was a better fit and has long been a good friend. After a tour to SXSW, with no bad feelings to Cooper, they felt that Dusty should've been there with them. Buddy Rose (their original drummer) will be playing the Ken Club show on April 6th with Roman Spring, The Sundelles, and the Muslims. Dusty's first show with Vinyl Radio will be April 28th at the Casbah.
Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
Vinyl Radio's music was also used for a commercial for The Village Hat Shoppe. Check it out!

VMix is really irritating me and the embedded videos below just aren't working for everyone, so if you'd like to see the videos of The Small Hours, please just link to my Vmix page here.

If you happen to stay home tonight, tune in to FX for the premiere of The Riches, a new series featuring Eddie Izzard and Minnie Driver. He has got to be one of the funniest people alive. Check out info here.

More Insound bargains for you. Enter coupon code 'good_music_rules' for 10% off your order until 4/9/07. Click the Insound link on the right side of this webpage. This would be a good time to buy those Earlove Earplugs that I have been raving about.

I mentioned last week that CMJ has begun to accept submissions from bands. I am really late in reporting this, but Bumbershoot is also accepting submissions, but the deadline is FRIDAY, March 16. They accept submissions through SonicBids and have special slots reserved for unsigned bands from the West Coast. Click
here for all the info.

Another Coors Amphitheatre concert has been announced. John Mayer and Ben Folds will be appearing on Jun 12. Presale tickets are available through the John Mayer fan club on March 16 with regular a onsale date of March 24. I've been talking about MayDay since December and I have just a couple comments. One, I heard from a second source that if the show even happens, it will be in June. I have also heard that The Atoms have been courted to play on the bill with no other specific details. My personal feeling is that if there is to be a "MayDay" show, it should stay true to what MayDay was back in 1994: all local. If there are to be headliners, driving ticket prices up, then count me out. If it is true that the venue fees are being waived for the event, it should be a community event as well as a not-for-profit event. That is just my humble little opinion. And since I'm a blogger and therefore think I'm somebody (see comment from Stuart
here) I am just giving my two cents so please save the jumping down my throat knee jerk responses for another time and place.
*****
If you tried to buy Bright Eyes tickets on Saturday, technical difficulties led to the site changing the presale to Sunday. Presale tickets are sold out and stupid me, I failed to get one. Hope you didn't flake like I did...
*****
Last, I can't stop thinking about comedian Richard Jeni
committing suicide. Rumors are flying, suggesting that he had some sort of major illness, but at this time that is not confirmed. Others say he's suffered from depression for many years. I just feel really sad about it and can't stop wondering what could be so bad that would lead someone to shoot himself in the face. Tragic.

Newsy Tidbits, kinda

Anna Nicole died yesterday. Her mother suspects it was drugs. Very insightful. If you watch Insider, you would know Anna hated her mom. I wish I didn't know, but her "career" was a trainwreck that you just couldn't look away from. Hopefully her daughter grows up in a safe and sane environment and ends a legacy of lunacy.

Yesterday I followed my impulse and made an order on Insound and it has already shipped. How's that for service? I'm just not into digital downloads, you know? I want the physical case, art, etc., and I love getting something cool in the mail every once in a while. Next week I look forward to receiving cds from Youth Group, Sun Kil Moon (a reissue with bonus disc), Peter, Bjorn And John, Sondre Lerche, Bloc Party, and Beirut. I also finally bought some Ear Love earplugs. All of that and I got 10% off and free shipping (on all orders over $30, when the products shipped are from the annex). Click the Insound button on the right of this site and use coupon code "SXSW_Insound".

Gimme your money!
Seriously.
Today the movie Norbitt comes out in theatres. Or is it the Klumps. Or is it some other fat person parody with Eddie Murphy playing some awful caricature in a fatsuit? This movie is not only annoying based on the previews, but it actually really pisses me off.
So really, if you're lame enough to spend $10 on this piece of shit movie this weekend, then you can be talked into anything.
So I'll tell you again, gimme your money.

Not much else in local news. MySpace bulletins have been down since Wednesday night and it's really starting to piss me off. Anyone who wants to promote anything is stressing big time right now.
*****
Here's my boy Rocky Votolato from Fox Rox, now on You Tube. I'm gonna push this show like I'm his label rep because that's how much I like his music. April 15 @ The Casbah, and he's finally headlining, so none of that 20 minute set shit that he was allotted with Murder By Death.
