Yesterday I saw a billboard that said "If you're sick, stay home". While I know the CDC is trying to control the flu, I'm not letting this stupid head cold keep me from enjoying this weekend. So when you see me tonight at the Casbah, or tomorrow at the Casbah & Hootenanny, or Sunday at Lestat's, don't be offended if I don't shake your hand. And don't make fun of me for the roll of toilet paper in my pocket, either. I will let the music heal me, thank you very much.

Just Another Saturday In San Diego

This weekend is going to be a big one in San Diego, so in advance of posting all your weekend listings I thought I'd remind you where I'll be.

First, The Rumble is back for it's fifth installment at the Casbah. The monthly event will, as always, be free, and will start at 3 pm on Saturday. This month features Tape Deck Mountain, The Drowning Men, All Wrong and The Plans Change, and DJ Andy Ralph of Writer on the decks. The show will be over by 6 pm, so you can get up to the other biggie of the day...



The FM 94/9 SD Holiday Hootenanny is finally here. The SOLD OUT show is going to be a good one. If you're over 21, plan on dressing warm (possible rain) so you can enjoy the beer garden on RiMAC field. The full lineup for Saturday has been released as follows:

It's Beginning To Sound A Lot Like Christmas

I'm not going to deny that I am a sucker for the holidays. It always happens around Halloween for me, since it's a holiday I'm not particularly a fan of, when the clocks roll back, and the temperature drops (brr...below 70!). For me, it's not about religion (of which I claim none), but it's a time of family, tradition, nesting, reflection and hope for a new year. Add all the parties and gatherings, and it's just a really good time to tell the people around you that you love them.

Naturally, if I cheese out on Christmas by November, I have a lot of Christmas/Winter/Holiday music. I still geek out on the Ally McBeal Christmas album because of Robert Downey, Jr.'s rendition of "River" by Joni Mitchell. I bought my mom Il Divo (mistake!), I even have a Cherry Poppin Daddies Christmas record from those swing dancing years. While those gather dust, there are some Christmas records I still love...the Sufjan Stevens box set is terrific, I like the Bright Eyes Christmas album, and I even hold on to an old 91X Christmas compilation that was put out by Loudspeaker in 1993, with perhaps my most favorite original Christmas song, "Tomorrow Is Found" by Gregory Page.

Every year, artists and labels and businesses all get into the Christmas game and sometimes it is to our benefit. Yesterday I went to L.A. to see AM and Sara Lov at Hotel Cafe and it was in celebration of AM's Christmas EP which can be found on iTunes and Amazon. Perhaps my favorite new Christmas compilation came from Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf. The disc is only $9.99 in their retail outlets and has songs from Death Cab For Cutie, Grant Lee Philips, My Morning Jacket, Youth Group, and even Sarah McLachlan doing her own version of "River". While I don't think any of these songs were specifically recorded for this compilation, it's a good one. I'm all nestled in flannel pj's with a head cold, but all this Christmas talk makes me think it's about time to put up my decorations. As Youth Group sings, "don't you just love this time of year?"

In 2006 Jon Bishop began writing and recording a refreshing style of music with Bryan Stratman at Capricorn Studios in downtown San Diego. This music had a different feel, still with that familiar hook, but with a new depth. Soon John and Bryan knew this creative energy was not to be ignored and Crash Encore was born. Guitarist TJ Royer, Jackson Price, a master of bass, vocals and flute and drummer Mike Cooper currently complete this dynamic puzzle.

REPUBLIC OF LETTERS:

The unique sound of Republic of letters sound is a clash of frenetic indie rock with more atmospheric and melodic sounds that reach out with an art rock edge. The band was originally formed by brothers Chris Venti (vocals, guitar) and Nick Venti (drums) in 2005. With the addition of Martin Niwinski (bass guitar) and later following Adrian Thorstensen (guitar) in 2006, the band has really come into its own sonically and creatively.

Republic of Letters developed their sound, rich with heart-swelling choruses, energizing rhythms and passionate vocal performances influences such as The Who, Editors, U2, Bruce Springsteen and The Police. When they set foot on stage, the band is determined grab a hold of the shirt collars and hearts of every listener and naysayer.

DJ EDGARTRONIC:

Edgar Nunez, a.k.a. DJ Edgartonic, is a San Diego-based DJ that plays a signature blend of electro-house, indie & rock remixes and 80s. His sound has kept San Diego dancefloors moving since 2005, as well as playing to audiences in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Las Vegas, Tijuana. He’s had the priviledge of sharing the stage with artists such as:

Blaqk Audio; MSTRKRFT; The Kills; Crystal Castles; The Antlers; Ghostland Observatory; LA Riots; The Villains; Tronik; Youth; Friendly Fires; The XX

He’s had his Summer ‘07 and Summer ‘08 mixes played on LA radio station Indie 103.1FM’s dance show, “Neon Noise”, and has been nomimated for a San Diego Music Award for “Best Club DJ” in both 2008 and 2009. He was the host of “Analogic Nights“, San Diego’s only dance music radio show on online radio station X1 FM (www.x1fm.com). He still maintains a relationship with X1 FM by doing programming for their Electronic stream (www.x1fm.com/electronic).
He has held several residencies, the most noteworthy being Boombox Thursdays at the Air Conditioned Lounge in San Diego’s Normal Heights area. Boombox ran for over a year and was covered by the San Diego Union-Tribune, for their ”Strobe Light Diaries” feature. DJ Edgartronic, himself, has been featured in both the Union-Tribune (in 2009 as part of its “Street People” series) and San Diego State University’s Daily Aztec music issue (in 2008).
He is also the “Official Tailgate DJ” for the Lingerie Football League team, the San Diego Seduction.

“As a kid I was constantly taking things apart to see how they worked. I remember watching open-heart surgeries on video with my parents who both worked in the Operating Room as perfusionists (someone who runs the heart-lung machine). I believe I got my perverse love of blood and guts because of this…

“In grade school my interest in the workings of nature was fueled through biology. Cytoplasm, cells, mitochondria, & basic elements fed my curiosity. How things came to be on a microscopic level. A year after I moved to Santa Cruz for college I decided, after jumping from science to psychology to science and back again, that art held all kinds of mysteries and more. I’d always expressed myself through drawing, writing, collage & painting, but as more of a hobby, rather than my main focus. Research, visual representation, & seeing how things come together to make a final whole were all part of the process, just as in science. I’m drawn to the unknown…Art is my safety net as well as the cliff I have to jump off of in order to get to my next destination.

TIM WALIKIS:
Tim Walikis was born in Binghamton NY In 1967. He showed interest in art from an early age. He enrolled in State University of Buffalo in order to become an illustrator/cartoonist. After his first sculpture class he quickly switched his major to sculpture, receiving a BFA in the discipline. After graduating he stayed in Buffalo a few years only to move to San Diego to escape the east coast winters.
Tim creates bold modernist paintings and woodcuts with strong lines. He works in both Acrylic and wood, often using found pieces of wood. He often uses his woodcuts in combination with paintings for maximum effect. He is influenced by a variety of artists including, Dubuffet, Harring, Coleman, Brancusi, Young, Williams and all the usual suspects.

Friday Night: UCSD is the place to be

Friday, December 4th - The Moviegoers, Girls, We Live Inside, Beaters and more: A night of goodness at UCSD!

If you're looking for something to do to unwind after all that Thanksgiving madness, come up to UCSD Friday, December 4th for a night of art and music. First, stop by the Visual Arts Facility to see the first-year MFA group show, We Live Inside, at the VAF Gallery just off Russell Lane. A reception will be held from 6 - 8, and The Moviegoers are playing a free show in the Performance Space at 7:30. So come grab a drink to start out your night! It's FREE!

Next, you can head off to The Loft to see Girls, the righteous San Francisco indie rock group and SPIN magazine's best new band of 2009. The show starts at 9 and The Morning Benders will be opening. $10 advance, $12 at the door (UCSD students: $5 or pay as you can at the door)

If Girls isn't up your alley, or you want to try and do double duty, you can wander over to the Che Cafe because they've got a full night of music lined up. Abe Vigoda, Blessure Grave, Beaters, No Paws (No Lions), and The Preteens are all on the bill. $8, doors at 8:30, bands at 9.

WHEN: 6 - 8 for a free art show (think free drinks), 7:30 for The Moviegoers, and 9 for other music/dancing
WHERE: UCSD (VAF Gallery, VAF Performance Space, The Loft, Che Cafe)

PARKING: Gilman Parking Structure is your best bet, but if you are broke (or some kind of fitness nut) you can park on Villa
La Jolla Dr. (or other places off campus) and hike it, but give yourself extra time of course.

NOTE: If you're really into experimental sound/video/performance art, you should come by the Visual Arts Facility Performance Space Thursday, 12/3 at 8:00 for 90 minutes of temporal works. Again, it's FREE!

Things To Do In San Diego: November 27-29, 2009

I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving and was able to spend it with family... whether by blood or friendship...I know I did and I'm so grateful for the friends I have. My Nana passed on Wednesday at 102 years old, which means the next week is going to be a bit crazy and I may or may not get proper updates in, as most of my extended family will be in town leading up to the funeral on Friday. For anyone interested in a preview, I uploaded a bunch of videos from The xx, Friendly Fires, Fanfarlo, Freelance Whales and more if you wanna check them out on my YouTube page. This Friday, Art Fag Records in conjunction with the Casbah, brings together some of the most buzzed about bands on the interwebs for our San Diego enjoyment. This is an all ages show at the San Diego Woman's Club and I have TWO PAIRS of tickets to giveaway. Just shoot me an e-mail with subject NO AGE. Art Brut, Princeton, Northern Towns @ Casbah, 10.28.09

Let me just say from the start, there are some shows I go to because I really love the bands, and other times I go because I want to understand why everyone else really loves a band. The latter could very well explain my attendance at the Art Brut show.

Northern Towns kicked off the night. I suppose I'd call them Irish Punk, and reminded me of all those Boston Taang!! records releases that Curtis has given me over the years. They're definitely more of a Ken Club/Tower Bar band and I'm sure they tear up house parties, but it just wasn't what I expected for an opener for this specific show. Not an insult or complaint, just a little random.

The same can probably be said for Princeton. They're sweet guys, I've seen them several times, and I really like their pop tunes, but they seemed like a weird tour opener for Art Brut.

I guess the magic of all of that, is that when Art Brut hits the stage, you really can't imagine anyone that should open for them. I tried listening to their latest release and just couldn't make myself get past a couple songs. Still, there I was, front row with Natalie hoping to 'get it'. And holy cow, consider me converted. From the first note to the very last, I was entertained. Eddie Argos is hilarious, energetic, and with his stature and bravado, commangs the stage and the crowd. I was only going to grab a couple songs, but ended up just going with it... so here's a video; the rest are after the jump if you click 'keep on reading'. Again I had issues with the lighting, but their lighting was full on darkness to full power lights, and a whole lot of flashing in between, so hopefully you can enjoy these to some degree.
