Jeff's Weekly Pick: Laura Marling @ Casbah, February 3

Though not primarily recognized as a singer/songwriter venue, The Casbah hosts the talented British songstress Laura Marling this Wednesday February 3.

Laura burst onto the UK scene at the tender age of 16, joining Noah and The Whale, an up and coming indie folk band in their own right. She performed on their debut album and had a romantic relationship with lead singer Charlie Fink. Laura has personally moved on to focus primarily on her solo career. Her debut full length, Alas I Cannot Swim, was well received, resulting in a Mercury Prize nomination in 2008 (a great honor indeed).

Her sophomore effort, I Speak Because I Can, is scheduled for a March release. After a brief stint in Australia, Laura will be making her 2010 US debut at The Casbah on Wednesday. Nathaniel Rateliff & The Wheel set the stage.

Watch “Devil’s Spoke” from her upcoming album, below.

Things To Do In San Diego: February 1, 2010

Oh, man, is this week gonna be good (and busy). I cannot wait to see The Soft Pack return to Tower Bar (and I imagine the line will be insane)...hope the Angelinos stay home on that one...plus I get to see a preview of Cirque du Soleil's Kooza, check out Bowerbirds at The Loft (already looking forward to the California Dreamin cheese plate), Rhett Miller shakes his booty at the Belly Up, and I'm trying to work in another viewing of Whisper House, because apparently there have been some tweaks in the script and stage direction since I saw the preview.

  • Bowerbirds, Julie Doiron @ The Loft

Ingrid Michaelson: Live at Indigo Hotel

Last week I was invited to see Ingrid Michaelson at the Hotel Indigo in East Village. I was looking forward to the show that was supposed to take place on the 9th floor deck bar, but as the day got colder and the chance of rain increased, it was clear the hotel would probably have to make other accommodations. I wish that was all that went wrong...

Having seen Ingrid several times before, I agreed to do an interview, something I generally don't do at all, but I guess I got that feeling you get with some very accessible artists...I've met her at least twice before, I've seen her perform a handful of times and three of those times were in "private listener" type performances, and we've even "talked" to each other via Twitter. I just imagined it would be relaxed and easy. I got to the hotel and had no problem getting in and finding Robert, the publicist for the hotel. We waited a few minutes and chatted before going to the suite where Ingrid was getting ready.

I suppose it's my fault for not clarifying things in advance, but until now, when I'd get invitations for special events, it was always because of this site, or back from relationships I made while in advertising. Now I'm working with SoundDiego, and though I'm only contributing listings to the site, there was some confusion about me submitting more content. We're figuring it all out and with any new site, we'll build as we move along, but Ingrid's people were clearly under the impression that I was "a reporter from NBC" and not "a blogger", which I would've clarified if the next thing they said to me wasn't, "Ingrid is losing her voice, so try and keep it brief." An interview. Brief. Really? So suddenly I felt more like I was at a press junket, get your question in and get out. I basically gave Ingrid a topic to speak to and if we don't use it over at SoundDiego, I'll post it here later.

In the meantime, I'll say that for a guest of the event, the night was pretty great...amazing tray-passed appetizers, waitresses with champagne, wine, and little mixed cocktails made with ginger infused vodka and orange juice, and in the corner of the room, a stand with Fortaleza tequila where there were tastings and pomegranate margaritas being generously poured. On the other hand, for the band and anybody who actually wanted to see and hear the music, it was less than ideal, with bar patrons talking the entire set. I recorded the whole performance which you can see in the playlist below, including Ingrid's attempt in quieting the audience with no results, which when all is said and done, is a bit of a bummer, because I dig the record, I like seeing Ingrid perform live, and Hotel Indigo is stunning. Maybe they'll continue the "artist in the spotlight" series and make some tweaks to make the events better all around.

Local Natives Release Video For Airplanes

This video was sent to me last week, but I still wanted to post it because I love this band. I've now seen Local Natives live about half a dozen times and they're performances are energetic, their multipart harmonies are spot on, and they're just all such sweet guys. You may or may not know that we tried to book them last year at North Park Music Thing, but they had to cancel at the last minute because of a scheduling conflict...now their full length has been released in the UK and will be released in the US on February 16 on Frenchkiss records. I have their EP with several of the songs that became the record, and I highly recommend checking out Gorilla Manor when it is released. You can even preorder the record here.

Catch Jasper Dickson Revue at Soda Bar this Tuesday

It's no secret that the longer I've had this little website the actual time I spend writing has gone down while my time spent actually going to shows and reading e-mail from bands, publicists, and labels has gone through the roof. Not a complaint or bragging, just a statement of fact. There's a formula that most of these contacts follow in telling me about the next big thing and with so much information, I have to have my own filters, like no matter how great a band, if San Diego isn't on the tour dates, it pretty much goes unread and filed and referenced later if they finally do add San Diego. I'm not big on album reviews either. I'll listen to your record, but (1) what I like is not the same as what you like and (2) there are few record reviews I've ever read that actually convince me to buy a record. Mine wouldn't be any different.

That said, last week I got an email from a band that's playing Soda Bar on Tuesday night and it was straightforward, to the point, but crafted so you know it was somewhat personal and that is something that doesn't happen often so I'm paying it forward.

The Jasper Dickson Revue is a soul garage band out of Echo Park. They're playing with Canton Mudders and there's no cover for the show. Had I not already planned on seeing Mission: Valley at Casbah I'd totally be there, and might try to maneuver to do both. Aside from the e-mail, watching the videos below, I was totally sold.

Backstory on the videos:

Also my buddy JC Chamboredon from Milan Records shot a couple of videos of
my band that I wanted to share with you. One of which was shot with us inside
the "Let's Be Frank" hotdog truck that parks outside of Silverlake Wine, where I
work. The other two take place inside Silverlake Wine. The idea behind them is
that they are all one creative take, all natural light and natural live sound
and all one continuous shot in an uncontrolled impromptu setting. We had a blast
doing them and I hope you enjoy them as well.

Mindy Smith & Landon Pigg @ Anthology, 1.21.10

Before making my way to Casbah for Sezio's big night on Thursday, I went to Antholigy to see Landon Pigg and Mindy Smith. Jeff bought tickets so we decided to make our way down early to have some dinner before the show. I'd been to Anthology for a few happy hours and had some snacks, but having a full dinner was phenomenal, and I recommend it to anyone heading there for a show. Anthology is tied in with the SoundDiego project, and as such I mentioned I'd be there and was super grateful for the complimentary appetizer...goat-cheese stuffed medjool dates wrapped in bacon. My mouth is watering just thinking about them.

But enough about the food. The show, too, was excellent. Landon Pigg started the night and while I wasn't familiar with his music, I happened to recall that he was the first musician to ever friend request me on MySpace. I guess the name just always stuck out. Over the years he's played San Diego a handful of times but I'd never listened to his music until he played this song, and he solved the mystery of "who sings that one sing in that one commercial" for me:

He was cute and awkward about the seated crowd eating dinner, but his music was great and the piano accompaniment was perfect for the venue.

After Landon finished, there was a quick break (less than 10 minutes) before Mindy Smith came out. I had been turned on to her music by my old boss, Jack Poe, who loved her voice and told me to get over the Jesus stuff and hear it for what it was, and he was right. I listened to that CD endlessly for a period and so I was pleased, since that was almost 6 years ago, that I still knew that music and she still played it. She was also cute and awkward, explaining that she hadn't packed a hairbrush for the trip and then telling stories about her songs, trying to compensate for the sadness and melancholy of her songs with funny stories between songs.

But there were sad songs that also got sad stories, like the one below, which was written for her mother who died in 1991 from Breast Cancer. Apparently the song has been adopted by many breast cancer organizations and I always admire singers who can tell such stories, even with time passed, and not totally lose their shit onstage, because I know were I in their shoes, my voice would quiver, the tears would pour, and I'd be done.

But the night wasn't all somber and she played a lot of songs in a little over an hour long set and I was glad that I had the opportunity to go (Thanks, Jeff!). I don't really do the jazz stuff, but Anthology has some shows that veer from the jazz and blues that I'm considering checking out, like Mike Doughty or Toad The Wet Sprocket. The show ended early and I made it in time to catch the full set from the opening band at the Casbah which worked out perfect for someone like me that isn't satisfied with just one concert in a night. Here are a couple more videos and there are some more photos after the jump (click 'keep on reading')

Joel P. West at Casbah

Earlier this week I posted about the Sezio show tonight at the Casbah. While I was up super late last night, or early this morning, depending on how you view the world, I realized I never posted the videos from their December show with J Tillman, so I put it in a little playlist and decided to share with you.

See you tonight at the Casbah!

Rosey's Diary: A Long December 2010

I should definitely be sleeping right now but I have way too much swirling in my brain, so I might as well enjoy the sound of the rain outside (and the bonus, no construction or salon noise when it rains!) and get to posting this long promised recap of December. I'm gonna put it all after a jump so you if you're the kind of person that doesn't like the rehash of the past, you can just skip this post entirely.

Things To Do In San Diego: January 21, 2010

January 21 archives if you 'keep on reading'.

I know it's really hard to motivate to leave the house when the weather outside is icky. While most San Diegans can appreciate our need for rain, all of it coming down in one week means it won't have a huge impact on reservoirs, the areas affected by fires are at a high risk for mudslides, and all the muck that we toss out of our cars and stays in the storm drains is going straight into our bay. Good times. If you rely on public transportation as I sometimes do, you're even less inclined to leave the house, but I'm telling you, tonight is the night to get out. I mean, the whole weekend is gonna be pretty awesome, but tonight you can get out and support my dear friends over at Sezio.org just by going to a killer show at the best venue in San Diego. win-win-win.

SoundDiego Launches Today

I mentioned briefly last week that I'll be working with NBC San Diego and their new project SoundDiego. I want to assure you, things won't change around here. I'll continue to post photos and videos from shows a month or two late (har.har.) and you'll still get random pictures of my world, like these of my nieces:

This spring I also hope to get some more tour diaries from bands headed to SXSW, I plan on promoting a few more shows, and I'll still have content exclusive for this site, so San Diego: Dialed In is still going to exist as you know it. If anything, having a name like NBC behind me might open some new doors for my broke and (still technically) unemployed ass. I'll be doing my listings here as usual, and they'll be over there, too, with a recommendation or two each day, but the listings there won't have some of the smaller bars with 'house bands', art openings, karaoke & DJ nights, or the house parties, so the listings here will still be the most comprehensive in San Diego.

SoundDiego has other contributors I'm excited to work with, too, like Chris and Tristan from Owl and Bear and Chris Cantore from Legit Radio, as well as some other really talented and enthusiastic people behind the scenes. I'll also be blogging there on behalf of the Casbah, and there will be content from the other venue partners including The Belly Up and Anthology, so you will get content there that you won't get anywhere else.

I hope you enjoy the new platform and hopefully it can add to San Diego's musical landscape. Anyway, I'm not even sure what the web address is, but since I'll probably be sleeping when it launches (since I'm sitting here working at 4am), I think you can find the site here. If not, go here and dig around a little bit.

And, if you've read this far, I also wanted to share that this year, I have been asked to curate the mainstage for the North Park Festival of The Arts. The event takes place on Sunday, May 16 from 10a-6pm. I have the duty of booking six local, family friendly bands who are willing to play for pesos to a festival crowd. I'm bravely going to open up to email submissions, but know that I have a strong grasp of the San Diego music landscape and already have an idea of who I'd like to book.

Send me an email (sddialedin AT gmail) with subject "NPFoA" if you're interested. Include a contact person and phone number, a band bio (including band members names, instruments, and what you're about), a link to your social media (myspace, facebook, twitter, youtube), and at least 2 MP3s attached in the email. Band photos are also helpful. You have to be willing to play any slot between 10am and 5pm. ONE email will suffice. I don't have a firm deadline for submissions, but the sooner the better, and I'll probably solidify the lineup mid-February.

David Bazan House Show, 1.16.2010

On Saturday David Bazan performed two house shows in South Park. Jeff bought tickets and I joined him. I still don't know who's house it was, but it was a small cozy livingroom, with hardwood floors and limited seating, so I was quite happy that I followed instructions and brought my own floor pillow (and beer). The show was fantastic and David Bazan was friendly and warm. Before they started I double checked that photos and video were allowed and they quietly thanked me for asking. Below is the playlist of the entire show. I didn't record all of the Q&A moments, and I haven't gotten around to putting titles on each song yet, so if you wanna help me, leave comments and I'll update. Until then, enjoy the videos.

Jason Mraz to Perform at "Cord Progression"

Sadly, I know too many people with spinal cord injuries and the subject has always been close to me personally. This came from the Jason Mraz fan club (though I've edited it slightly to remove 86 exclamation points):

We are excited to announce Cord Progression, a special night of music in support of Jesse Billauer’s motivational speaking tour, Life Rolls On and Spinal Cord Injury Awareness.

This exciting evening will take place at the Long Beach Terrace Theatre on Saturday, February 27th, 2010 and features a special acoustic performance by Jason Mraz. Good friends Timmy Curran (with full band), The Makepeace Brothers, and Bushwalla will also perform with more performers to be announced.

Pre-sale begins Wed. Jan 20th at AM PST via Ticketmaster and ends Friday, January 22nd, 2010 at 10pm PST. The password is "LIFE." Regular tickets go on sale this Saturday, January 23rd, 2010 at 10am via ticketmaster.

This event is paperless (and anti-scalping). Ticket holders will go directly to the door at the venue, present a valid photo ID, and swipe the credit card used to purchase tickets for entry. It's fast, easy and good for the environment. The entire party must enter the venue at the same time since tickets are non-transferable.

27 FEBRUARY 2009 LONG BEACH TERRACE THEATRE- LONG BEACH, CA - CORD PROGRESSION W/ TIMMY CURRAN, THE MAKEPEACE BROTHERS, BUSHWALLA - PRE-SALE BEGINS WED. JAN. 20TH AT 10AM PST, ON SALE SAT. JAN. 23RD AT 10AM

Things To Do In San Diego: January 20, 2010

Our mayor testified in the Prop 8 case, a Republican took the seat left by Kennedy in Massachusetts, and a tornado watch was issued in LA, Orange County, and San Diego. Are these things related? I don't know, but if it is the end times, I'd prefer to go out in a bar listening to good music. Just sayin.

It's that time again...

Today is a very, very special day. Not because the town is flooding and all the rats/roaches are drowning and there are tornado watch warnings, but because today Paul Tollett and the crew over at Golden Voice have finally posted the line-up for COACHELLA! For music aficionados, hipsters, scenesters, and music snobs in general, the Coachella line-up jump starts the excitement for what has become, for many, the replacement of Christmas, Halloween, New Years and birthdays all rolled into one.

I know that I speak for many when I say that the 5 days I spend in the desert every summer watching all my favorite bands try to out rock each other while I sweat and chase a buzz I will never catch, has become the highlight of my year. Once it's over I start speculating again how on Earth will Golden Voice top this year, who will headline next year and who is booking the house/hotel for next year. But let's not talk about next year, let's talk about this year.

As soon as I woke up this morning I was pleasantly surprised to see the barrage of emails and texts I received, all raving about the Coachella 2010 line-up. So obviously, I grabbed my laptop to see what all the fuss was about (follow along please: www.coachella.com). AND BOY WERE THEY RIGHT!!!! As a self described music snob, it is very easy to bitch and moan about the Coachella line-up each year. It's sort of like living in San Diego and bitching about the weather (stupid cloud!). While I'm not thrilled about the headliners, I will say that this year's line-up is as close to perfection as possible. There is literally something for everyone. Big names, little names, really obscure names, surprise reunions and of course, the beloved curve balls.

As much as I want to analyze, consume, digest and regurgitate what I think about the entire line-up, I'll spare you all the garble and just give you, in my opinion, what should not be missed.

DAY 1 - Friday April 16th
I'm not crazy about Jay-Z, in fact I plan on skipping him, but I'm sure he'll bring his NYC swagger along with some special guests to perform. Who I'm most excited to see this day is LCD Soundsystem. Their last album was near perfect and about as close as you will ever get to combining punk and house into a beautiful blend of deliciousness. They're coming out with a new album this year so I expect some new stuff to shake your booty along with their usual audio assault of awesomeness. I also plan on seeing Grizzly Bear, Passion Pit, Grace Jones (c'mon, she's practically a living legend), The Whitest Boy Alive, Lance Rock (Yo Gabba Gabba's DJ, bring your toddlers!), Aeroplane, Sleigh Bells, and Little Dragon. Keep in mind I generally lean to the electronic laced, 4 on the floor type of music. Right Rose???

Day 2 - Saturday April 17th
Again, I'm not crazy about Muse, I just don't see what the big deal is, but they're selling out stadiums all over the world so what do I know? In my opinion, this is the weakest day of the event, but that's like saying Jessica Alba is not as hot Latetia Casta and Alessandra Ambrosio. So, with that said, I plan on seeing Hot Chip (I've got their new album, it makes me smile), 2ManyDjs (some say they're the innovators of tasteful mash-ups), Major Lazer (think reggae/dancehall themed M.I.A., but better, and without M.I.A.), Dirty Projectors, The XX, Flying Lotus, Pretty Lights, The Girls and Beach House. I'm ok with some days not being as awesome as others. It gives you a chance to sleep in that day and you don't have as many conflicts between bands you want to see playing at the same time.

Day 3 - Sunday April 18th
The Gorillaz are awesome. I saw them in Chicago about 8 or 9 years ago and it was really cool. They projected cartoons of themselves on a screen while they played behind it, which was not that cool, but they still sounded awesome. Seeing as they are headlining the last day though, I'm sure they plan on bringing their "A" game as far as showmanship and aesthetics go. Plus they have an arsenal of hits and I can only imagine there will be a surprise guest or four. In my opinion, this day is amazing, this day was made for me, in fact I think they raided my iTunes library to make this day, but anyhow, with conflicts abound, I pray I can catch all these amazing groups: Pavement (reunion baby!), Thom Yorke ???? (apparently he has jazzed up The Eraser and he is playing it in order from front to back...WOW), Phoenix (duhhh...), Spoon, Sly and The Family Stone (if you miss this, you are a fucking idiot), De La Soul, Gary Numan (I'm curious, what can I say), Club 75 (French super group including members of Cassius, Justice, plus Busy P and DJ Medhi), Big Pink, Miike Snow (these guys killed it at Spaceland and The Echo up in LA last year), Florence and the Machine, Little Boots (wasn't thrilled about the album, but friends say she was amazing live at Lollapalooza last year), Owen Pallet (or Final Fantasy, same guy, rocks the fiddle) and of course The Soft Pack.

So there you go SD, I hope that was not too painful. If you are on the fence this year and you are a bit overwhelmed by all these groups you don't know, I suggest you hop on MySpace or YouTube and start checking some of these groups out because if you are going to go to Coachella, this is the year to go. There truly is something for everyone this year and I take my hat off to Golden Voice for really giving the fans the line-up they've been waiting for. See you Indio, drink lots of water!

Things To Do In San Diego: January 19, 2010

January 19, 2010 archives after the jump if you 'keep on reading'.
The 2010 Coachella lineup is being announced today and after sitting on the edge of my seat and seeing rumor posters for the last couple years (before that you could never convince me that a concert in the desert was a good idea, so I didn't really care), I'm just gonna sit this one out and I'll post it when I see it. More importantly, we still have San Diego music to think about, so on to the shows.

Sezio receives 501(c)(3) Status, Plans Celebration / Fundraiser at The Casbah 01.21.2010

After a year's worth of paper work, and contemplation of whether we really have the energy to do this for the next decade... Sezio applied for and was granted 501(c)(3) status by the IRS. We'll soon be announcing our four programs designed to fulfill our mission statement of providing resources, exposure and community support to emerging artists and musicians, but for now it's time to celebrate.

We've booked The Casbah for Thursday, January 21st to host a special night of live music and to fund raise a bit for our fledgling non-profit. Tim Mays has generously offered to donate the night's cover plus a percentage of the bar. Jamuel Saxon will headline the evening, joined by special guests Writer, Tape Deck Mountain and Black Mamba. Martian Horses and Joel P West will open up the evening.

Congratulations, Zack and friends! San Diego is a better place to live because of people like you and organizations like Sezio.

Whisper House at The Old Globe

David Poe and Holly Brook in the World Premiere of Duncan Sheik and Kyle Jarrow’s Whisper House at The Old Globe, Jan. 13 – Feb. 21, 2010. Photo by Craig Schwartz.

Tony and Grammy Award-winning songwriter Duncan Sheik follows up his Broadway sensation, Spring Awakening, with this haunting new musical. It’s 1942 – at the height of World War II – and Christopher, an imaginative young boy, is sent to live with an aunt he’s never met: Lilly, a reclusive woman who serves as the keeper of a remote lighthouse. Not yet comfortable in his surroundings, Christopher begins to hear strange music no one else can hear seeping through the walls. It doesn’t take long for him to suspect the lighthouse may be haunted, and these ghosts tell him that Yasujiro, a Japanese worker that Lilly has employed, should not be trusted. Is Christopher’s imagination getting the best of him? Or are these ghosts warning Christopher about the very real dangers that lie ahead? Whisper House is a touching and beautiful story about how we should embrace, rather than fear, the unknown.

I mentioned last week that I went to see Duncan Sheik perform a concert at The Old Globe and was in complete awe of the show. A few days later I followed up by seeing the production of Whisper House and I cannot stress enough that everyone should go see this show. I don't really consider myself much of a theatre person mostly because, lets face it, it's not the cheapest form of entertainment. I tend to be skeptical when the word "musical" is attached, and even more so when child actors are involved. I know that is really weird, but the former makes me think of grating repetitive songs like "Oklahoma!" and the latter because they can be kind of annoying if their cuteness overpowers their stage skills. That said, this show is fantastic, and Eric Zutty, who plays Christopher, plays off his aunt Lilly's character perfectly (played by Mare Winningham who is a recognizable tv, film, and theatre actress). Since I don't want to be one of those people that tells you the ending, I really won't go more into the story than is described above, but truly, the ghosts and the songs they sing are the stars of this show. I felt the show presented a WWII story I hadn't heard before, but was also really relatable to the wars we are in today and how our leaders and lawmakers create a culture of fear. Additionally, though I saw the show four nights ago, the songs are still in my head...in this case a good thing... and they work in the story or as stand alone pieces of music. The simple set, the full band, the outstanding casting, and the beautiful soundtrack make for a perfect show that I would definitely see again.

Drew Andrews CD Release At Casbah 1.13.10

Casbah- Wednesday night- Dual CD Release Show - Drew Andrews and Boomsnake + Writer, and Metrofique in the Atari Lounge $8

I kinda suck at previewing shows, but since my friend and blog contributor (who owes me a tour diary post) is having a CD release, I thought I'd give you an extra nudge to come out to the Casbah on Wednesday night. For one, Drew Andrews has an EP being released digitally, so if you pay your $8 at the door, you'll get a digital download card a month before it's available at iTunes.

Drew will be performing with his full band, Spectral Cities.

Additionally, you've got Boomsnake releasing new music, and they're joined by Writer (one of my faves, duh) and Metrofique will be playing in the Atari lounge, and honestly, I can't stop listening to the stream of their record. So 4 awesome bands at $2 a pop...and free music to retrieve from the interwebs when you get home. Beat that!

I also wanted to give y'all a heads up...Drew Andrews and Spectral Cities will be performing on Thursday at Pappy & Harriet's out in Pioneertown, which from all accounts is a super fun bar in the middle of nowhere. Some people camp, some just brace the 3 hour-ish drive back to San Diego, but if you have time on your hands and can make it out, it is certain to be a killer time.

FM 94/9 + The Mikey Show

It's official. Mikey announced via Twitter, Facebook and his blog that he's going to be on FM 94/9.

SD Radio has the release:

“The Mikey Show” will air weekdays from 6:00-10:00 A.M. beginning on Monday, January 25, 2010.

I don't want to quote any more of that because the God talk just really annoys the shit out of me. Also, I wouldn't recommend actually clicking on Mikey's blog as it can be summed up with "God has a plan for me" accompanied by the most annoying music stream ever. I'm not religious. I also don't hate God. But I have a VERY hard time with people who think God gives a fuck about their careers. Everything doesn't happen "for a reason". This theologic-centrism irks the shit out of me. Good thing I don't listen to morning radio and won't be starting now.

Good things happen to good people and bad things happen to good people. Good things happen to bad people and bad things happen to bad people. Let's let God worry about the bigger picture and not so much about morning radio in San Diego.

Duncan Sheik at The Old Globe, 1.11.10

Dear Duncan Sheik,

I figured since you'll be living in my city for a while, I thought I'd say hi and thank you for the amazing concert you performed tonight at the Old Globe. I'm really glad it was well attended, too, because we kinda had to dig to find out about it. I guess it's not often that there are concerts at The Old Globe. Really, that's a shame, though, because the sound and lighting were amazing, the seats were comfortable, and let's face it, when the older demographic that subscribes to theatre tickets ages, they're gonna need younger people who appreciate theatre to become the subscribers of the future, and a concert to introduce a production was pretty genius. The set for Whisper House was simple but pretty and I look forward to seeing the performance.

I'm kinda spoiled, I have to admit, so I asked a radio friend if his station was promoting the concert and production and alas, they were, but I didn't find out until after another friend already bought tickets. It was cool though, because we were able to give the extra tickets to some North County folks from Twitter who probably wouldn't have otherwise been introduced to Whisper House. You should really get on Twitter...look how many people are always talking about you.

Oh, and I took my camera. I know that's probably frowned upon in the theatre, but it's kinda what I do. I was trying to take photos on the sly, which is why you kinda look like a ghost in the two pictures I did happen to capture before the guy behind me got irritated and without mincing words told me to cut it out.

Actually, I think he was more annoyed that the light from my phone kept turning on because I was taking notes on your set list, but fuck him, I wanted to remember every part of the night. Sometimes it's hard for me to just go to a show and sit and watch. Call me a.d.d. but that's why I don't ever go to the movies. Still, I stopped using my phone and camera anyway because I'm not a total bitch and I didn't want him to have an usher bounce me out, but luckily I had a small notepad and can write somewhat legibly in total darkness.

I loved that you started with an older tune. I saw you at Brick By Brick after your first record came out, and I also have Humming and Daybreak but I wasn't sure if you'd play stuff I knew. "Such Reveries" was a great way to kick off the show. I also appreciated that you introduced every song...I imagine much of the crowd was less familiar with your material than me, so the stories and titles helped. "Good Morning" got a laugh when you talked about George Bush and the line about being surrounded by 'fucking clowns'. Did you know in the last election that San Diego was actually blue? At least I think that's what I heard. I'm guessing the theatre-goers are all part of the 'liberal elite', so I'm pretty sure they weren't offended. "Come Out" was beautiful...I think you said that one isn't released?

Then you had Holly Brook come out and sing a song. I wasn't sure about the title, but I'll go with "Something Else". She was amazing and had a gorgeously haunting voice, I'm sure she's perfect for the production. I enjoyed your exchange after her song. "Now we go from the sacred back to the profane," and not taking your compliment, she replied, "That song is about vampires." Then you said, "Why must you contradict me? You clearly have your finger on the pulse of the cultural zeitgeist," to which the audience all laughed. Her voice was a nice touch on your classic "Barely Breathing" and I was totally blown away by your Psychedelic Furs cover of "The Ghost In You".

I had never heard "Half A Room" before, but your story made it easy to envision the Venice hotel and the metaphor was relatable. At that point you had David Poe come out (I think that's when the guy behind me got pissed) and not to be too cheesy, but that is one sexy man. I thought it was pretty funny how he entered the stage through the prop door, and also that he was chomping on gum while he sang his song that he called "The Naughty Folk Song". I'm glad he's on MySpace- I'll definitely check him out some more. You sounded great singing "Love Is A Sinner" together.

It was nice to get a taste of some tracks from the show, too. You played and explained "Solomon Snell" and "Earthbound, Starlight" and then you went back to the beginning and ended your regular set with "Home". Man, I really wish I had a recording of the version you played tonight because it was breathtaking. I've been thinking a lot lately about the idea of "home"...Have you heard Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros' song of the same name? I think you'd like it.

Of course in theatre there's always an encore, and I couldn't tell if you were joking about the sing-along when you played the Radiohead classic "Fake Plastic Trees" because I'd venture to guess the majority of that crowd had never heard the song before. And fittingly, you finished the show with "Take A Bow", the final song in Whisper House to which you received a standing ovation.

It was an amazing show and when I'm not so strapped for cash I'll pick up some more of the CDs you've put out over the years...I noticed your Greatest Hits CD has a live version of "Home", so maybe it's similar to the version you played tonight. Anyway, I hope you enjoy your stay in San Diego...I list shows and stuff going on in this town and could also give you some good restaurant and bar recommendations if you're looking for suggestions. Maybe I'll see you some Tuesday night at Nunu's when they have dirt cheap drinks and we can chat about stuff.

Thanks for the music,
Rosey

Things To Do In San Diego: January 11, 2010

I'm sorry for the lack of updates on this site of late, things have been pretty crazy around the Dialed In HQ. I'm happy to report busy for my unemployed ass is very good. I've been helping build content for a new Casbah website and the launch will be happening very soon. The site allows for more show information, including band bios, photos, mp3s, and videos. The cool thing is that anybody can submit content and we will post it (upon approval), so if you have band photos or video you want to share, please feel free to send an email to casbahsandiego@gmail.com. Additionally I've teamed up with SoundDiego, a portal for all things music related in San Diego that will be launched next week by NBC San Diego. Show listings and recommendations will be featured there daily, though they'll still be here where you can always find a few days out. Hopefully I can get to that super-December wrap up so we can catch up on 2010 and stay on top of all the really great things happening in this town.
