Me & Brian from SSPU Taken A Million Years Ago at SDSU

It's my birthday!! It's statistically probably yours or close to it since all our parents decided to bang around the holidays. Happy birthday to all of you, and my gift to myself is keeping these listings short. I will try to come back later in the week and add show announcements and other music news, but for now, I'm out. Can't wait to see SSPU again tonight for maybe the 20th or 30th time.

Stay safe out there.

CoVID-19: Soda Bar Takes A Stand: Requires Vaccination or Negative COVID Test For Attendance

Soda Bar is now requiring proof of vaccine or a negative COVID test for attending any show.  This is MASSIVE! I'm so proud of Cory and the Soda Bar team for taking the steps to keep their patrons and staff safe. I cannot wait for other venues to get onboard.

Casbah Bartender Gets Fanboy, A Rock and Roll Thriller, Up on Amazon Prime! Rent or Own It Now!

Casbah Bartender Gets Fanboy, A Rock and Roll Thriller, Up on Amazon Prime!

Five years ago, Casbah bartender/bar manager/co-owner Ben Johnson talked his fellow short film makers into making a feature length film. Luckily they didn’t know how large of a task it would be. After two years of filming and almost three years of editing, Fanboy was born, selling out 5 screens at the South Bay Drive-In in San Diego in January and February.

Fanboy has been accepted onto Amazon Prime streaming platform, and is now available for rent or purchase.

San Diego Music News: Pour House Renovates | Soda Bar & Casbah Offer New Merch | Bar Pink Livestreams | Switchfoot Bro-Am Goes Virtual | #StopHateforProfit

Me, Jake Najor and Tim Fears at the Office (Taken 1.28.2020)

A new phase of reopenings happened over the past few weeks, and with them new records being set on new Covid-19 cases, hospitalizations, and deaths for the state. I'm seeing places I love reopen, like the Ken Club and The Office and Space and it's so hard not to just find myself wandering out any random night to catch up with my friends.
But I can't do it. I've barely seen my parents for 3 months. I've seen my sister and nieces a few times, but mostly in drivebys, and our one camping trip where we did our best to mask up and socially distance. I'm not throwing that time home away so I can go be careless to have some drinks at a bar or dinner at a restaurant. I miss my friends, I really do. I even got a new interim camera which I can't wait to adjust to and practice with, but I'll save it for the outdoor things. I'm just not ready to sit in any room breathing in the same recirculated air for any prolonged amount of time just because I want this to be over.
I was feeling pretty nostalgic, however, so I thought I'd so another local venue roundup. After the jump.

CoViD-19: California Budget Revision | Cats & Bunny Disease Dangers | Soda Bar Hoodies | LA County To Open More Recreation | Covidiot Ammosexuals

It looks like today is going to be a big news day, so I'm gonna just share this now and I'll work on another post for the City and County briefings, plus a bunch of news articles I've gathered since last night. I finally caught up with sleep with a late afternoon nap, then vegging on the couch to catch up on my Bravo shows while Darren was in the studio recording, and then reading for a bit before going to sleep by 2am...much more in line with my normal Casbah lifestyle than staying up until 8am. It's been a chill couple days, we haven't left the house at all since my early week Costco trip, but I think we may go for a coastal drive or walk or hike or bike ride at some point this evening because I've literally gone from walking 3-5 miles a day to big fat zero. I know the picture I used today isn't the best, but that little bird was so bright and I'd never seen it around before and it gives me a goal for a new camera and better lenses, which was supposed to happen in 2020 but may just have to wait until 2021. I'm off to see my butterfly now. Lots of info after the jump.

CoViD-19: Support National Independent Venue Association Fight To #SaveOurStages

The empty Casbah stage with a sold out room. This is from the Nada Surf show in January

You may or may not know that I'm responsible for the content of the Casbah's weekly newsletters. This week, I was tasked with taking a little bit of the Belly Up's newsletter and a little bit of Joe Rinaldi's Music Box newsletter to create the Casbah's newsletter. Please take action to contact your representatives. It's preformatted and easy to do. Click here to take action:

SUPPORT INDEPENDENT VENUES.

If you love live music and have wanted to help your favorite small venues, NOW is the time YOU can help in a major way!

Casbah joined the National Independent Venue Association (NIVA) when it formed in response to the COVID-19 crisis.  NIVA has linked 1,200 independent venues and promoters across the country, and has joined their voices at the level necessary to get the attention of our congressional leaders.

This organization has a step that asks you, our fans, to use the link below to send an email to your congressional leaders to remind them that it is not only the venues and artists, but the fans they serve that require congress to support the venues put at risk by this crisis.

This email process is very quick to complete, and allows you to tell your representatives that Casbah, Soda Bar, Bar Pink, Music Box, Belly Up,  and every other small venue in town need to have every possible chance to reopen on steady footing at the end of the COVID-19 crisis.

It’s going to require that we show a substantial amount of support and initiative to explain to members of congress (who may not actively participate in live music) that our industry will require special attention, as one of the most challenged sectors of the San Diego economy, in order to survive and continue to be an asset to the community after the crisis.  We sincerely think you are our best advocates.

Thank you for everything, and just know that we can’t wait to reopen and host your favorite bands in our rooms.

We've been told that we only have until Wednesday to gather support, so please click and join our fight.

This Thursday: Ken Stringfellow of The Posies To Perform At Vinyl Junkies Record Shack

In high school, I fell in love with The Posies. I had a chance to catch their Soda Bar show at Soda Bar in 2018 and it flooded back tons of memories. So imagine my surprise when I got an email from Ken Stringfellow himself:

Ken from the Posies (and many other things) here
I'm coming to town (October 24th) to play at Vinyl Junkies, in their tiki patio, a rather whimsical location for a performance that normally has decent gravitas... on this tour I'm playing my album "Touched" in its entirety, plus songs & stories from my 30 year career in music...
The show is me, solo, alternating between guitar and piano. Shelbi from the Midnight Pine will join me for a few duets as well.

Get tickets to this special intimate performance below:

City of San Diego Shuts Down The Irenic & Street Angels Homeless Shelter for Teens

Last week, The Irenic posted a dreary message on their Facebook page:

Full Statement Link (full text here):
After nearly six years of opening the doors of our church to host All-Age events for the North Park Community, The Irenic has been ordered by The City of San Diego to cease operations, effective immediately on September 1, 2019. We believe that this order is a violation of our rights as a faith community to use our property to both bless the community and generate income to support our ministry, and are seeking legal counsel on how to proceed. It is our sincere hope that we will be able to begin hosting events again soon. We encourage you to reach out to Councilman Chris Ward's Office and Mayor Falconers Office to voice your support for The Irenic. Thank you so much for your support.
Now, obviously I work for the Casbah and as such have worked the door for our events at the Irenic for many years now, but I have no inside information about this news. I will say my own opinion, which is that it sucks, and not just because of the lost income it means for me and our staff. There's been a neighbor hellbent on getting the venue shut down and fuck that guy. He allegedly called the police for EVERY. SINGLE. SHOW. I hear this is from Code Enforcement, but am sure Mara "Fun-killer" Elliott had a hand, as she seems to be chasing everything that makes this city cool, from shutting down Nova's derby facility with just 72 hours notice (and thus ending her derby involvement altogether) to resurrecting issues at the Observatory long thought to have been resolved and now this. It sucks. The Casbah has 10 shows with no home should the issue not be immediately resolved. Looking at Soda Bar's calendar, they also had at least 10 shows booked through the end of the year.

Update:
Casbah is working diligently to move all the previously scheduled shows. The sold-out Phora (10/13) show has been moved to House of Blues and with additional capacity means more tickets are on sale. Benjamin Francis Leftwich (9/18) has been moved to the Merrow, which unfortunately means this is now a 21+ show. Casbah will be making announcements as shows are moved.

Everyone has been covering this story, so here are some links:

Photos: John Vanderslice @ Soda Bar, April 13, 2019

Some more pics from the past. John Vanderslice played Soda Bar on April 13th and he's such a lovely human. He'd more or less quit music for a while but was able to see his way out of a rough time and get back on the road. I don't know how often he'll tour or when he'll be back again, but I certainly hope I can always carve out a night to see him when he does. Pics after the jump.

This Week: La Escalera Fest Ocho

I had to kinda dig around to find the info for La Escalera Fest Ocho, which takes over several bars this weekend including The Office, Tower Bar, Bar Pink, Soda Bar, Spaec, and Moustache in Tijuana, so I thought I'd share the actual poster with all the time breakdowns. For tickets and more information, go here. I imagine any last minute cancellations or such will be posted on their Facebook page. And if you're going, please do yourself a favor and walk or catch a rideshare. We don't need a bunch of drunk punks on Jump bikes or Lime Scooters breaking skulls and getting DUIs.

Tragedy Cancels Sold Out Soda Bar Show With Her's

Tonight's sold out show at Soda Bar with Her's is cancelled.

It is being reported that the band, while travelling toward California from Arizona, were involved in a fatal car collision which left 4 people dead; Her's members Stephen Fitzpatrick and Audun Laading and their tour manager Trevor Engelbrektson, as well as the driver of the Nissan pickup. Information about the collision can be found here. The band had performed at the Rebel Lounge in Phoenix and were driving west through the night for their Wednesday night gig in Santa Ana at the Constellation Room. The collision happened just after 1am. The collision site was about an hour and 45 minutes into what would've been approximately a 5 1/2 hour drive from Phoenix, demonstrating the perils of exhaustion, impairment, and dangers of the road.

The band had just come off a successful run at South By Southwest and were showing great promise on their second US tour. As the news trickles out, no doubt the loss will have a ripple effect among the music community and fans. A statement from their label is below, as well as a performance from SXSW.

More on the story at NME, Billboard, Consequence of Sound and possibly the last photo taken of them here as well as lots of IG tributes and photos here. Even more links: Paste, Pitchfork, Brooklyn Vegan, Stereogum

Update: Besides Her's members Stephen Fitzpatrick and Audun Laading, the Minneapolis music community is reeling from this news. Tour manager Trevor Engelbrektson was a well known soundtech and TM in the Minneapolis area at venues like Icehouse, The Hook and Ladder, and First Avenue, and leaves behind a wife and two young sons. Awesome Fest Presents CANCELLED! February 15-17, 2019

I love the Awesome Fest peeps and this weekend they've rallied together a new event called CANCELLED!, which of course can be confusing because actual shows are canceled all the time. But despite all of that, you should really get your hands on tickets ASAP because I've never known an Awesome Fest event that didn't sell out in advance and it becomes exceedingly impossible to sweet talk your way into the shows without a wristband. The events are spread between Soda Bar and Space by night, and Bar Pink and The Office by day. Plus, it's super cheap and you've got a three day weekend so you'll have all of Monday to recover from the vast amounts of PBR consumed all weekend. Tickets are $25 for the whole weekend, but you have to buy before Friday (while they last!). Day passes are available, too, for $15 Friday, $20 Saturday, and $15 Sunday.

The full lineup and schedule is after the jump, but I also included lineups (without times) in the regular listings.

Photos: Soccer Mommy & Madeline Kenney @ Soda Bar April 9, 2018

Whoops. Another set of photos I took and uploaded to post and found that they were still sitting in a draft. Life gets busy, what can I say? I first saw Soccer Mommy at Soda Bar in February when she opened for Phoebe Bridgers. I should actually say I heard her, but didn't see her, because the show was so packed. Just a couple months later, she had her own headlining slot. This woman is amazing, and I've been especially happy that she's been added to regular rotation on Sirius XMU which hopefully means big things for her. Madeline Kenney opened the night and she was pretty spectacular as well. It's been a really good year for women in music and it's been really inspiring following artists like Phoebe Bridgers or Angel Olsen or Soccer Mommy all the way up to Tune-Yards and St. Vincent and being able to share with Nova as she is learning music, learning her own tastes, and also constantly listening to the things we're listening to. As long as Cory and Tim keep bringing these types of shows in, I'll keep trying to make as many of them as I possibly can.

Photos: Frankie Cosmos, Ian Sweet @ Queen Bee's, April 10, 2018

Seeing Frankie Cosmos and Ian Sweet at Queen Bee's was a particularly fun night. The show had originally been scheduled for Quartyard downtown, but their grand re-opening was pushed back and so this was moved to Queen Bee's in North Park. I love Alma, but she's busy using the venue for swing dances and Salsa Nights, and Bachata and Zumba classes, in between nights she's rented out for Quinceaneras and other big private events, so I have to admit I hadn't seen a live music show there in quite some time. The place looks great, with a high visible stage and great sight lines from anywhere in the room. The sound had a couple tech issues, but for the most part, the kinks were worked out and it was a rad night of female empowering music. And I guess I should clarify that's my word, not expressing the intent of the artists in any way, but on this particular night, because the show was so close to home, Darren and Nova and I walked to the show, so I always try to see music through her eyes and ears when we can catch a show together, and even as we passed her bedtime, she decided she was in it for the long haul and we stayed till almost the end of the show. These are bands definitely worth checking out if you're not already familiar.

San Diego Music Venue Shuffle & News

It's been a while since I've posted a "newsy bits" type post around here but it seems like there's so much happening that it's time to tell you what I can share of what I know.

By now, you've surely heard that Tim Mays is now a partial owner of Soda Bar, which he purchased with Cory Stier, Andrew Montoya, and Angie Ollman. Jeff wrote about it for CityBeat and Dustin wrote about it for SoundDiego with the particulars. Obviously I work for Tim so I'll just let their articles do the talking, but I do know that some minor changes have already taken place, like the removal of the pole directly in front of the stage and expect a good interior paint job to spruce it up. As a music fan, this can really only be a good move to continue to bring great up-and-coming acts to San Diego.

Another part of all of this is that the Irenic posted a press release to their site earlier this month (h/t Josh Krimston) announcing they would once again be hosting shows. As you may have heard, the venue had told us back in 2017 that they would cease to have shows. Unfortunately, even if they're back online, that means a setback of booking because I'm sure we'd already have a dozen things booked between now and SXSW, but keep an eye out for more shows produced by Casbah and Soda Bar. For now, Casbah has moved Enter Shikari from Music Box to the Irenic on  February 25. In the meantime, Casbah added a couple shows at places like House of Blues Voodoo Room and Soma Sidestage to make up for what we thought was the loss of a venue. There is another spot Casbah was looking to get on board that might end up being an all ages alternative if needed in the future.

In other news, everyone keeps asking me what I know about the Observatory after they canceled last week's show with Sweet and Tender Hooligans and then again this week with K.Flay. They've gone radio silent on social media and tend to hold all their information close to the chest, but here's the official line from the venue:
We had to reschedule our K. Flay show due to a brief closure for maintenance repairs. It'll all be finished soon and we will be ready to rock on Thurs, Jan 18th for Big Boi & The Cool Kids.
For ticketholders to K. Flay, the show has been rescheduled to May 8. The Sweet & Tender Hooligans show was rescheduled to February 16.

In downtown news, the Quartyard is almost back. Though I don't know if I'll forgive them for the way they tragically let their potted trees die while they were in storage near the Derby Dollhouse, the stage is back being built out on the corner of Market and 13th, just a block east of their former location on Park and Market. The footprint is much smaller and I'm not sure they'll have all of the amenities as before, but a couple shows have already been booked, including Moose Blood on April 2 and Frankie Cosmos, Ian Sweet, and SOAR on April 10.

Lastly, in case you missed it, George Varga penned an awesome love letter to the San Diego Music Scene in the U-T.  Read the full article here.

My Favorite Shows of 2016 in Photos

I can't really muster a reflective post on the year. I feel like if you thought 2016 was bad, just hold on for 2017. I can't even. What I can do is remind you that we are an amazing city for music. I have the privilege of seeing hundreds of bands every year (though admittedly, I probably went to about half as many shows this year than last), and because of my various jobs, this year I was a lot better at having my camera in tow. I thought I'd share some of my favorite shows of this year, with honorable mention to Kero Kero Bonito, where some mixup left me without a photo pass, and Rocky Votolato, whom I've shot more times than I can count and left my camera at home so I could just enjoy the 10 year anniversary of Makers. The following are in no particular order.

Blind Pilot at the Belly Up, 10.28.16

Car Seat Headrest at Casbah 1.18.2016 (and again in Nov at the Irenic)
Frightened Rabbit at Belly Up, 5.21.16

Glen Hansard at The Observatory, 9.28.16

Joshua James at Moniker Warehouse, 8.17.16

Lucius at Belly Up, 11.19.16

Lucy Dacus at Casbah, 8.12.16

Silversun Pickups at The Observatory, 4.19.16

Bad Religion at Ye Scallywag at Waterfront Park, 10.22.16

Hey Marseilles at Soda Bar, 3.26.16
