Things To Do In San Diego: Thursday, February 29-Wednesday, March 6, 2024: Arlo Parks | The White Buffalo | Zack Oakley | Kevin Devine | David Spade | G. Love | Grouplove | zzzahara |

I am pretty glad to be putting February behind us, but I've always thought we should get a rent discount this month for it being fewer days, even on a leap year. Oh well. I went to the Evan Dando show on Tuesday and it was pretty good, though I could've done without the girl who maneuvered up to the front and proceeded to dance like the show was all about her. It's a major pet-peeve. A solo acoustic guitar performance of Lemonheads songs has literally ZERO danceable moments. Go. Away.

Thursday night, Darren, the kid and I will be going to Arlo Parks. I'm a little bummed my photo pass was declined but whatever. I haven't exactly posted a ton of show photos lately, and no photo pass means no obligation to anyone.

I know this site is mostly about fun events, but don't forget Tuesday is election day, so mail in or drop off your ballots before then. My ballot came during the heavy rains so it was pretty soggy and damaged, so I'll just go vote in person. Be nice to poll workers, I'm super proud my mom got trained to be one and will be working through election day.

There are some pretty great shows this week, so get out and enjoy this town. Just bundle up, because the next storm is supposed to be a cold one.

Stay safe out there.

Things To Do In San Diego: Thursday, December 28-Wednesday, January 3, 2024: NYE + Black Lips | Wild Horses | Transfer | Schizophonics | The Creepy Creeps |

I always think I'm gonna have time. I wanted to dig through my archives and find a more NYE festive photo, but now I realize the photos I'm thinking of are actually probably from like five years ago so I'm just not organized enough to track them down because I need to sleep. I didn't realize the kid was flying out on Thursday and I get to be the one for airport dropoff at 8am. Sooo. I hope everyone had a really great Christmas and is ready to ring in 2024. I did my best with listings this week, but didn't go above and beyond for NYE for venues that I don't normally list here...frankly the high ticket parties and prix fixe dinners aren't what I'm after, so I'm sure you can find those sponsored listings elsewhere. I may add anything relevant to this site, but in case I get caught up and never get to my final diary of the year, have a great week and I'll catch ya in the new year.

Things To Do In San Diego: Thursday, November 30-Wednesday, December 6, 2023: Oh He Dead | Luna | Flor de Toloache | Mondo Cozmo | December Nights & Holiday Parades | Aterciopelados | Enanitos Verdes | Depeche Mode |

I love a good Santa. Free sitting with Santa at San Diego Zoo (Taken 11.25.23)

I didn't get a chance to do all of the holiday events on a separate page as I've done in the past, but there's a ton of holiday stuff, tree lightings, parades and more, in addition to the Christmas Celebration at Sea World, Wild Holidays at San Diego Zoo Safari Park, Jungle Bells at the San Diego Zoo, A Very Furry Christmas at Sesame Place, Lightscape at San Diego Botanic Garden, and all the different ice rinks. There's a pretty good assortment of holiday stuff listed here

I'm super into the holidays, but I also kind of get anxiety spirals. Like, just starting my listings on Tuesday had me kinda freaking out about how I'm gonna get them done in a couple weeks while I'm traveling. I went ahead and got a new camera and a new laptop, so now I'll have to figure out how to get all my stuff from here onto there and get that all set up. Not looking forward to that at all. But, when I can rein it all in, take a minute to breathe, I get excited. I've stocked up on hot cocoa and apple cider packets, I've pulled out all my beanies and mittens, and all my Christmas gear is ready to be worn. I'll be working for Mondo Cozmo on Friday night, but I should still have plenty of time to check out December Nights, and I'll probably try and get to the Alpaca ranch on Sunday, and sometime between I'll probably get a Christmas tree, too. I also have to plan a day to get my COVID vaccine before my trip, but I don't really have a full day to be knocked out, so I'll have to keep that in consideration.

In the meantime, have a great week and stay safe out there.

Things To Do In San Diego: Thursday, May 18-Wednesday, May 24, 2023: Thrice | Emo Nite | Fiesta Del Sol | The Cure & The Twilight Sad | Sweet & Tender Hooligans | Les Claypool & Fishbone |

I did them again. To be honest, this week was even crazier than the week of my dad's services. My uncle has been here and I love him, but he lives on a whim and he needs me to be available when he needs me to be available. We have made and remade plans about 36 times in the past four days. So when my mom and my uncle gave me a rundown of his last day in town, I knew Tuesday was my night for cocktails (post-pandemie lockdowns, I try to designate one night per week instead of constant inebriation in our former speakeasy) and to get these listings done. Again. There is no way these will be complete by the time they post. But this is the basic stuff and I'm likely not updating again until next week, which are the services for my Sister-In-Law in New Mexico, which is going to be a whole other situation. I love you all. Thanks for all the goodness. I've needed it, but I assure you I'm good.

Things To Do In San Diego: Wednesday, November 16-Thursday, November 24, 2022: Wonderfront Festival | Blitzkid | Lucy Dacus | La Luz | Noah Kahan | Blu DeTiger | Supersuckers | + The Biggest Party Night of the Year!!

Lucy Dacus Plays A Sold Out Show At Observatory on Saturday Night (Taken 11.29.2018)

On Wednesday night, we went to Henry V, which was part of the Globe For All program by the Old Globe and it was so great. If you're free on Saturday, RSVP immediately for the last available show they're doing. The other ones are already sold out. It's totally free and totally worth it.

Obviously this is a big week with Wonderfront happening at the Waterfront, a ton of sold out shows everywhere, and next Wednesday, which I included, because it's typically the biggest party night of the year. It also gives me a day off, and I guess I'll do listings next week for Friday through Tuesday or Wednesday. We'll see. I've also been trying to put together a new holiday guide, but obviously lots of stuff like tree lightings, holiday markets, The Grinch, and lots of ballet presentations have already started.

Casbah had a ton of show announcements this week, and Ticketmaster had a ton of backlash, but I'll leave all of that for your Googly fingers to find and read if you're so inclined. I STILL haven't made it to a morning zoo in over a week and I'm jonesing, but for now, I've got lots of family stuff and work stuff and show stuff that I'm a little too occupied to carve out the time. Soon. And before I know it, Jungle Bells will be back with extended Zoo hours. I hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving. It's possible I get a post or two in before then, but with the family all with time off, don't hold your breath. But do wear a mask.

Stay safe out there.

Things To Do In San Diego: Wednesday, October 5-Tuesday, October 11, 2022 | Julia Jacklin | Enter Shikari | DEHD | Marcus Mumford | Soft Kill | Girls Against Boys | Matt Nathanson | James McMurtry | The War On Drugs |

Julia Jacklin (Taken 9.25.2018)

I am keeping it short and sweet this week because I'm a little swamped. Between work and having family in town and just trying to manage sleep and life and all of it can be overwhelming. There are so many amazing shows this fall and particularly this week and I don't have the bandwidth I used to. So I never got around to adding show announcements last week and I'm not adding them this week either, but know that Thee Sacred Souls sold out their first show and another one has been added. A Baby Bushka show has been added at Music Box and I suspect that one will sell out pretty fast, too. If I think of any other biggies, I'll let you know. Until then, have a great week. I hate to be the bearer of bad news but anecdotally I'm hearing of a lot of people getting COVID again, so get that booster and wear that mask.

Stay safe out there.

Me & Brian from SSPU Taken A Million Years Ago at SDSU

It's my birthday!! It's statistically probably yours or close to it since all our parents decided to bang around the holidays. Happy birthday to all of you, and my gift to myself is keeping these listings short. I will try to come back later in the week and add show announcements and other music news, but for now, I'm out. Can't wait to see SSPU again tonight for maybe the 20th or 30th time.

Stay safe out there.

Things To Do In San Diego: Wednesday, September 14-Tuesday, September 20, 2022: BAYNK | Foreign Air | Monophonics | Fontaines DC | Maren Morris | Wilco | Dry Cleaning | Bad Bunny | CHAI | Fiestas Patrias |

Fontaines D.C. (Taken 5.21.2019)

I'm not really allowed to say that summer kinda sucks for concerts and there are definitely dozens of exceptions to that theory that we can look to, but there is something magical when fall comes around and artists start doing tours instead of just a slew of festivals and you end up with the problem of too many good things happening on the same day.

That is definitely the case this weekend so hopefully that suck-ass weather we had last week is finally dissipating and we can get back to our beautiful San Diego lives. I've had a very good week, a couple nights of work, lots of days at the zoo, we went to see David Dondero and Davey Tiltwheel at Modern Times, and Darren and I even went snorkeling. The tourists are mostly gone and San Diego can truly be our playground once again.

If I look down the listings, there are at least two or three things I would go to every single night if money was no object and time was more abundant and my energy didn't get so sapped so easily, but I'm happy to have more work on the horizon, more zoo days in my routine, and I'll have to deal with the FOMO that I'm not going to see Wilco this time around.

Hopefully you can find some awesome things to do, too. I may add new show announcements later this week, but I'm pooped and have been working really hard to get out of my all-nighter sleep habits. So maybe check back throughout the week and I'll update when I can.

Stay safe out there.

Things To Do In San Diego: Thursday, September 8, 2022: Cat Power: Covers Tour | Cults | Agnostic Front & Sick Of It All | Sean Hayes | Buck-O-Nine |

I'm exhausted.

I told you last post that I probably wouldn't get listings together this week, so now I'm scrambling just to get Thursday up because I worked my ass off at Pavement at the Balboa. It wouldn't be so bad if I'd actually gotten my shit together on Tuesday, but now I'm working for Cat Power on Thursday so who knows when I'll find the time for sleep and weekend listings and my (actual job) newsletter and email and all the things I need to do, including celebrating my dad's birthday, which a year ago they told us he would never see. And I haven't been to the zoo since Monday!!!

So I threw together Thursday listings and while they may not be fully comprehensive, I still checked all my usual sites and I think I got you covered.

When I'll get Friday through Tuesday done is just as much a mystery to me as to you. But I'm chugging along. Better to be busy than not, right? And I skipped a COVID post last week because what else can I say except it feels a little comforting to be "low" in community levels in the City of San Diego, the County of San Diego, and the State of California. We'll see what happens with Thursday data and if anything is worth reporting. All I'm hearing is that with the new bivalent booster, you should be at least 2 months past your last booster or 3 months past your last COVID infection, which means I'll wait until after my birthday, in the first couple weeks of October to get mine.

Stay safe out there. Say hi if you see me at Cat Power. It was amazing seeing so many friends at Pavement on Wednesday night, almost felt like the before times.

Things To Do In San Diego: Wednesday, August 31 - Wednesday, September 7, 2022: Labor Day Weekend | Elvis Costello | Jackson Browne | Murder By Death | Dream '22 | Caifanes | Booty Bassment | Peter Hook |

Peter Hook & The Light (Taken 11.8.2016)

The last time I saw Peter Hook & The Light was one of the darkest nights in American politics in my lifetime.

Everyone was excited to be at the House of Blues and it was a great release after a tormenting presidential election cycle. It gave everyone a chance to stop watching the pundits and constant news and predictions about who would win the presidential election, and too many of us were confident that Hillary was going to win that night.

And then the mood shifted. Polls were closed. People started staring at their phones. People were crying. I was crying. How the fuck did TFG win? How could so many Americans trust this sexist, racist conman-manbaby to be the president of the United States of America? Did enough men hate women so much that they couldn't vote for one for president? Was it her specifically? Did enough women hate themselves to subject themselves to just ignore all the things he'd proven to be?

It was dark. We're still paying for it today. It is unbelievable that TFG fuckface hasn't been indicted on any criminal charges. It is insane that people we know and interact with and in some cases, are related to, could still support such a prick.

But here we are.

And it isn't Peter Hook's fault and he was a pure light that night when the night was such a downer. I have to hope that when he hits Humphrey's on Tuesday that he can help a lot of people expel the demons that linger from that night, if only for this one night.

There are a lot of amazing shows this week. And I'm going to be honest, I'm working at the Pavement show on Wednesday (which is why listings are through Wednesday instead of Tuesday this week), so I will do my best to get listings done on time next week, but it's a holiday weekend, it's the final weekend of Nighttime Zoo, and I haven't spent nearly enough time with my family, at the beach, or just lazing around the house. All of which sound entirely delightful when we're under an excessive heat watch for our region through at least Monday. Do what you gotta do. I know I will.

Stay safe out there.

Things To Do In San Diego: Wednesday, August 17-Tuesday, August 23, 2022: The Bellwether Syndicate | Shakey Graves | En Vogue | Surefire Soul Ensemble | BeerX | The Head And The Heart | Kid Cudi |

The Head And The Heart (Taken 8.2.2019)

I don't think we're done with the pandemic, but it seems life is moving as if it is so and it's interesting to see how differently it is being handled by artists and particularly their management. On the one hand, bands who were playing small venues before the pandemic came right back to those small venues to test that their fan base was still there and seeking them out. Then there are other artists who could play smaller venues who somehow think during the pandemic that their fans just couldn't wait to see them and thus overbooked themselves...playing venues waaaaay too big for them and then crying about it when they're not moving tickets. I've always believed venues should let you know what their calendars look like moving forward, but it isn't the venue's duty to make your fans for you...if people don't know you or haven't heard you, it is on you to make them know you...not my job to introduce you to the world and sell 500 or 700 or 1200 or 2300 tickets for you. Artists need to check themselves, check their management, and come back to this reality and book appropriately. The Head and The Heart selling out two nights at Humphrey's is amazing, but some of these bands coming through are just shooting way too high. Come back to earth in this 'post-pandemic' world or start working on getting Tik-Tok famous.

Also, if you're here reading my nonsense, thank you. For my friend that gave me a big fat Venmo tip for my work, thank you, especially. Your tip will get us an amazing takeout dinner at our favorite spot and that is kinda everything. xoxox

Things To Do In San Diego: Wednesday, August 3 - Tuesday, August 9, 2022: Petite Amie | Father John Misty | Tiki Oasis | Jon Snodgrass | Glass Spells | Sum 41 | Man Man | ArtWalk Liberty Station | DAY.MVS XL | Rostam | John Reis |

Me & Father John Misty (circa May 2012)

Like everyone, I'm so sick of COVID-19. I hated my isolation a couple weeks back, I hate that the virus is still everywhere, and I hate that people are knowingly positive and just out in the world living as if they're fine, because that means people like me, responsible for taking care of my dad in palliative care and having a teen just over a week out from going back to high school and a partner who doesn't get paid if he gets sick, can't actually live normal lives. When I think about all the amazing shows I've missed this year, it's pretty depressing, but it's the way it's gotta be for me so long as this carries on.

So I'll be doing my thing, but there are a lot of fun things happening this week, so if you're healthy and living your carefree best life, get out there.

As always, I'll update these listings if anything comes up that I missed.

Be safe out there.

Wednesday, April 13, 2022

Things To Do In San Diego: Wednesday, April 13 - Tuesday, April 19, 2022: SDMA Showcases | Spiritualized | Idles | Yard Act | Baby Bushka | The Stone Foxes | Sons Of Kemet | Pup | TWRP | Girl Talk | San Diego Music Awards |

Pinegrove at Observatory (Taken 4.5.22)

Another week and a lengthy list of amazing shows to catch. These didn't take quite so long as I'm learning to shut off all other stimuli as I work through them, and the bonus that it's Easter week means some venues are just offering fewer shows. And while that may seem like a bad thing, it actually can help in decision making, without the tough choices when there are half a dozen or more amazing shows all falling on the same night. Some music news, this week's shows, and a little COVID ranty rant from me. All after the jump.

Wednesday, February 16, 2022

Things To Do In San Diego: Wednesday, February 16-Tuesday, February 22, 2022: Hiss Golden Messenger | Suzanne Santo of HONEYHONEY | Steve Poltz Birthday Celebration | We Are Scientists | Dinosaur Jr. | SDMA Nominees |

I did the listings. Yay!

State rules are changing but bear in mind that we're still in high transmission in the county and masks indoors are still "strongly recommended" even if they're not required for vaccinated persons. And for the unvaxxed, they are still technically required at all times, whether enforced or not. I would highly recommend everyone stash home tests while they're available because we could very well bounce back into higher transmission if everyone just drops all mitigations at once. We had no problem grabbing free N95s at CVS earlier in the afternoon and save them for when we're gonna be indoors for extended amounts of time, otherwise we use the N94s or surgical masks we'd stockpiled. Some stores are holding them at the counter so people don't just grab them all, and all you have to do is ask for them.

There are some really amazing shows this week so hopefully you're healthy and young and vibrant and can get out to safely enjoy them.

Be safe out there.

Wednesday, February 02, 2022

Things To Do In San Diego Wednesday, February 2-Tuesday, February 8, 2022: The Album Leaf | Beth Hart | Deep Sea Diver | Everything Is Terrible | Karl Denson's Tiny Universe | Faye Webster and more...

I had to make a choice between sleep and listings and I decided that I'd rather force myself to stay up in the quiet of the house while everyone is asleep and power through. It helped that I had some of my nonsense Bravo shows to catch up on and watched Vanderpump reunions in the background. So here you have it - still a few shows have been canceled or postponed so there are a lot of holes in the regular venues, but hopefully that eases as numbers come down (for now). As I mentioned, I'll be working at the Casbah for The Album Leaf which will be nice because it's an early show relative to usual Casbah shows, and also hopefully I can have a somewhat normal day once my head hits the pillow for a few hours.

And I know people using the listings page don't necessarily want to hear me prattle on about COVID-19, but with all the new studies coming out about Omicron, you should be running out to get up-to-date on shots. While having the "primary series" -- 1 J&J or 2 Moderna or Pfizer is the minimum, without getting boosted you're not well protected against more severe illness, and contrary to what people are saying, you're still less likely to catch the virus in the first place if you're up to date and wearing a well fitting N95 mask or greater. And if you're at the Casbah and have a not so good mask, just ask the bartenders because they've got supply of N95s on hand.

Stay safe out there.

Wednesday, January 26, 2022

Things To Do In San Diego: Wednesday, January 26-Tuesday, February 1, 2022: Robert Delong | Casbah 33rd Anniversary with Starcrawler | Sabbat | The Spits | Grizfolk |

It turns out I had a couple episodes of Real Housewives to catch up on and it turns out that a ton of shows have been postponed or canceled, so listings weren't too time intensive, so I updated them through next Tuesday, which means maybe I can get back on track to have them publishing on Mondays or Tuesdays again on the regular. Things are changing quickly, in fact I just found out that the Casbah's sold out Earthless show was postponed to February, which came quick because just last week they sent out a release that their tour dates were moving but that the California dates would remain intact.

So take all of these listings with a major asterisk and check the venue socials or website the day of any event you want to hit because everything is changing all the time.

Stay safe out there.

Things To Do In San Diego: Saturday, January 22-Thursday, January 27, 2022: Guttermouth | Joan Osborne & The Weepies | Augustana | Robert Delong | Casbah 33rd with Starcrawler |

Sold Out Crowd at Current Joys (Taken 1.19.22)

I was hoping to get these done much sooner today, but it is what it is. I'll try to get back on track for doing them Monday or Tuesday so that I don't have to waste my weekend doing them. The end of January was supposed to have some amazing shows, and while there's still lots of good stuff, there are definitely a lot more cancellations and postponements that weren't there just a week or two ago. But if you look at the photo above, it isn't hard to see what is going on. People aren't getting boosted, and they're only wearing masks when asked or when someone has to tell them, standing in crowded spaces with poor air exchange and ventilation. I should've spent the pandemic building Corsi-Rosenthal boxes and sold them to venues. Darren worked another packed night last night at the Casbah and at least he has the benefit of going outside frequently and not having to really be in the same spot for too long, but I'm still gonna make him test again in a day or two. I was actually starting to look forward to Son Volt and dipping my toe back into show action after relaxing a little after working on Tuesday, but of course, they have their own outbreak among their band and crew, so I'll consider it a bullet dodged.

Stay safe out there.

Photos: CHVRCHES and Donna Missal at Observatory North Park, 12.13.21

I'm gonna skip all the parts about my anxiety of being in a crowd of 1200 people during a pandemic and just get to the good stuff. CHVRCHES played their first of two nights at the Observatory North Park on Monday, December 13.

Darren, Nova and I have been listening to their latest, Screen Violence, incessantly. It has become a staple in the speakeasy for me and D. We jam it in the car. We sing along. It's easy to call CHVRCHES a family favorite that we can all agree on.

This was my fifth or sixth time catching the band, so it's always fun to see what they'll include on their setlist. We got some favorites, old and new, plus a couple unexpected. We were also curious how she'd perform "How Not To Drown" which has the great collab with Robert Smith, but Lauren sang the whole thing instead of enlisting the bandmates to do so.

The set had something for all fans. The indie jams, the pop anthems, and even the heavier EDM-leaning songs with the big drops that make the crowd go insane. And Lauren joked about how she thought it would be a great idea to do costume changes which is why the setlist has some funny spacing in it. We got four solid looks that complemented the music being played, from mysterious with a black transparent lacy cloak to angelic feathers to a rocker dark jumpsuit to a playful look of t-shirt (her own Final Girl merch) and shorts.

I do also have to mention that Nova and Darren got a spot along the back tier railing next to a couple. They eventually made conversation about how cool it was that Nova was a fan and that it was a wholesome activity for us to all do together as a family. She revealed she's a principal at a private high school in Carlsbad, her partner a high school teacher. She then proceeded to get absolutely hammered. She vaped weed the whole show while pounding Modelos and slipped and fell at least twice. I hope she remembers the show and not just from the certain bruises she has on her ass. We're still in a don't-take-your-mask-off-under-any-circumstances mandate among our household, so it's funny being so dead sober around all that pent up energy of people just wanting to get completely sloshed.

So yes, the show was great. We were also next to a guy who was a Donna Missal superfan, so it was kinda fun getting the lowdown on her before she took the stage to open the show. She was great and faintly brought to mind Kitten for me, who play every show like they're in a stadium for their biggest, baddest show ever. Her pics are at the end of this post. All after the jump.

Things To Do In San Diego: Friday, November 26-Wednesday, December 1, 2021 | Comic-Con Special Edition | #GreenFriday | #SmallBusinessSaturday | RSD & Vinyl Junkies 4 Year Anniversary |

I was sitting at home on Thursday night feeling so proud of myself for not having opened my laptop all day and then it occurred to me that I only did listings through Wednesday and I needed to prepare a newsletter for the Casbah.

Ugh.

So my relaxing Thanksgiving quickly detoured into watching poorly dubbed foreign movies on Netflix while I worked to get these done. 5 hours later and here's the results. I'm so tired, so I'll do a do-over tomorrow and work as minimally as possible. I didn't include it in the listings, but Sea World's Christmas Celebration has commenced and runs through January 2nd, with select nights of later hours and fireworks on weekends. Likewise, San Diego Zoo Safari Park kicks off their Wild Holidays with lights and extended hours on select nights. Jungle Bells is coming soon to the San Diego Zoo, but not until after December Nights, so look for that December 10. This weekend also kicks off the Comic-Con Special Edition and it's my first Con in maybe a decade where I didn't sign up for a media pass. Hopefully that doesn't ding me for future Cons, but my dad was already hospitalized by the time they were available so I didn't wanna take a spot that I wasn't realistically going to use, being crowd averse as I still am.

Anyhow, I'm completely wiped out so off to bed. Stay safe out there.

Things To Do In San Diego: Thursday, November 18-Wednesday, November 24, 2021 | 100 Gecs | Little Hurricane | Slow Pulp | Julieta Venegas | Beabadoobee | Wavves | Jordy | Dawes | Havnauts | Lagwagon |

Beabadoobee Returns To San Diego (Taken 10.18.19)

It's funny after a nearly two year global pandemic-- where some of us had nothing but downtime-- so many people can still be feeling totally burnt out.
But that is totally normal.
Downtime filled with financial and health and political and mental unease wasn't truly downtime at all. And for the millions of people who never got that break, the burnout can feel even worse.
So all we can do is take a breath. The holidays are upon us and while often a stressful time, we can choose to not make them so. We can choose to forego the hard parts and focus on the easy parts. We can skip the big box Black Friday rush for televisions and grab takeout instead. We can go to a show. We can take advantage of San Diego's almost-always perfect weather and the dozens, if not hundreds, of free holiday events. We can reach out to family, friends, people we haven't seen or talked to in ages. You don't have to make excuses, everyone was on the same boat.

There are a ton of events leading up to Thanksgiving. I probably won't do listings for actual Thanksgiving Thursday, but I'll get something rolling for at least the rest of that weekend. I'm also trying to resurrect my holiday event guide, so while there are a lot of tree lightings and craft fairs, if I can get to all of those, they'll be on their own page so as not to bog down the music listings.

Stay safe out there.
