Things To Do In San Diego: Thursday, April 25-Wednesday, May 1, 2024: Neil Young | Emo Night Karaoke | La Lom | Art Alive | ArtWalk | Encinitas Street Fair | Adams Avenue Unplugged | Book Crawl | San Diego Music Awards | San Fermin | Yellow Days |

I'm not gonna lie, trying to get listings done in a timely fashion so they publish in the morning while also spending long days away from home because everyone else in my household is currently sick really sucks. It also kinda feels like I'm just planning on getting whatever non-Covid thing they have eventually, so I'm trying to stay on top of work and shopping and general adulting. So. Lots of stuff this week and weekend. Lots of San Diego Music Awards showcases leading up to the awards on Tuesday night at Humphrey's. Adams Avenue Unplugged, Artwalk, Book Crawl, Encinitas Street Fair...there's a lot!! I'll be working at the Casbah on Friday for the Emo Night Karaoke and can't wait to see what everyone sings and also be working at the Julia Wolf show on Sunday at Quartyard. Beyond that, I'm just gonna see which way the wind blows, drink a shit-ton of fluids and immune boosters, be outside as much as possible, keep the air purifiers running, and do my best not to get sick with this plague that some are calling "The 100 Day Cough". Also, Tim Fears did a photo post. Check it out.

Stay safe out there.

Things To Do In San Diego: Thursday, April 4-Wednesday, April 10, 2024: bar italia | Hurray For The Riff Raff | Jesse Daniel | Good Kid | The Cactus Blossoms | STRFKR | Old 97's | John Cleese | Slow Hollows | Chastity Belt |

Sold Out Gregory Alan Isakov at The Sound (Taken 3.7.24)

You can tell by the way the listings are starting to get longer and longer that we're staring down Coachella, with it's first weekend next week. There are so many great shows and not all are conveniently booked on weekends, so you might have to rearrange some things to say, get to the Chastity Belt with it's early door time on a Wednesday, or even double up on shows or nights going out to get it all in. As for me, I worked for Nicotine Dolls on Friday and Adi Oasis on Tuesday, and I'll be working for Good Kid, The Cactus Blossoms, and Chastity Belt this week. And next weekend my mom, sister and nieces are going to the Bad Religion show, so I guess I need to procure a ticket to hang out with them for that.

It's a busy week and the Casbah has about a dozen announcements this week alone, so stay tuned and make sure you get the newsletter so you're on top of it.

Stay safe out there.

Things To Do In San Diego: Thursday, March 28- Wednesday, April 3, 2024: Mike Doughty | Marnie Stern | Mary Timony | Skating Polly | Victoria Canal | Andy Frasco & The UN | The Vices | Melissa Etheridge | Torres | Adi Oasis | Madi Diaz |

Listings are done. I don't have a lot to say except there are some great shows this week. With Easter and family and all the things, I don't know how much I'll be out, but I will be working the Adi Oasis show on Tuesday at Quartyard, so say hi if you're coming by. Full listings this week are after the jump.

Things To Do In San Diego: Thursday, March 14-Wednesday, March 20, 2024: Emo Nite | Karl Denson | Wild Party | Grace Potter | Shane Hall | William Fitzsimmons | Cold War Kids | The Lone Bellow |

I haven't put together a diary/links post this week because I've been out doing life. Darren gave up his second job so he can finally have some days off, and we took advantage on Monday by driving out to Jacumba Hot Springs Hotel for lunch, then doing a hike in Anza-Borrego along The Impossible Railroad. It was quite an adventure and probably one we wouldn't do again because the primitive road was kinda sketchy for our non-4x4 vehicle, but it was fun nonetheless, and the weather out there was perfect - sunny, but not crazy hot, some wind gusts but nothing a windbreaker didn't protect from. My week continued with all day at the zoo on Tuesday, where I learned my wi-fi was strong enough to do a Google Meet conference call. On Wednesday, I decided to go to work with Darren since he only had a five hour shift, and it ended up being pure magic. I spent a couple hours with the tigers before getting an impromptu behind-the-scenes peek where I got to meet some ambassador animals, including petting an echidna and watching a special session with Estrella, the sloth, and I even got to feed it. I didn't even end up doing the tram and after we had a white-Mexican dinner at On The Border. Not gonna lie, that endless enchilada deal was pretty good.

This week continues to be great as all my usual work emails have slowed while every PR person is in Austin for SXSW and as we approach St. Patrick's Day and spring break. Seaworld (varies), San Diego Zoo and San Diego Zoo Safari Park (9am-7pm March 16-April 7) will all have extended hours, so check their schedules if you plan on giving it a go. My favorite Alpaca Ranch has another open house on Sunday, so I'll probably head out there, too.

As for music, there are a ton of great shows coming up. Humphrey's announced their full summer lineup and tickets go on sale this Saturday at 10am for ones that hadn't already previously been announced. Casbah has two nights with The Lone Bellow which is kind of a big deal considering the sized venues they usually play. Plus, if you love St. Patty's Day, there are events all over the county to get into some shenanigans, even though this year's OB event is canceled.

Have a great week. Stay safe out there. I love you.

Things To Do In San Diego: Thursday, February 22-Wednesday, February 28, 2024: Husbands | Big Business | Ty Segall | Evan Dando | Great Lake Swimmers | Otoboke Beaver | KRS-One |

I stayed up all night on Tuesday to get listings done, while I watched all 8 episodes of Fool Me Once on Netflix. The minute I finished, I regretted not including February 29, because next week is Darren's birthday, Evan Dando is in town, and we're hoping to all go to the Arlo Parks show on Thursday and have some celebrating in between, so I don't know when I'm gonna have time to carve out for listings. But I'll do it, of course, that's what I do.

I just finished a diary post, so I don't have much to say except that there are way too many good shows this week for me to get them all in my title, and I also included the Audobon's Bird Festival because it's really fun and there are plenty of free parts you can attend without paying for festival registration, even if it's just to check out their pop-up book store or the trade show, which always has a gazillion amazing cameras, binoculars, and lenses to check out. And who doesn't love bird merch? I mean, come on.

I'm tired and want to have a productive Thursday, so I'm off to bed. These listings will see you in the morning.

Stay safe out there.

Things To Do In San Diego: Thursday, February 1-Wednesday, February 7, 2024: Taylor Ashton | The Paranoyds | David Dondero | STORM AID FUNDRAISER | Plague Vendor | Portugal. The Man | SATH |

I survived a seven-day streak of selling merch at sold out Casbah shows.
Well, mostly survived.
That was two nights of Pinback, then RFTC, the aMiniature, then Lucy's Fur Coat, then two nights of The Bronx.
Last week I started feeling an earache that by Sunday was incredibly painful. So I went to urgent care and turns out I had a full blown ear infection, I'm sure it was exacerbated by night after night on the patio and trying to keep warm. Even then, I still worked on Sunday and Monday, and I found that walking the zoo and getting oxygen in Fern Canyon would help clear my head a bit instead of the constant popping and sloshing my ear was doing when I'd lay down. So, now I'm a few days into an antibiotic and feeling much better, though I still have a way to go before feeling 100% again. But I'm good and Darren got back on Sunday and I survived the Casbah anniversary month and I could've made at least a few excuses not to do these listings, but I had some news and shows and YouTube things and the premiere of VPR to catch up on, so here they are. And now I shall sleep.
If you're paying attention, tickets to Future Islands go on pre-sale today so make sure you use the Casbah code so they know you're reading our newsletter. And not gonna lie, I don't really get excited about sporting events, but did you hear there's gonna be a rugby match at Snapdragon this summer between All Blacks and Fiji Rugby? It's July 19th and tickets go on sale Friday and I think I need some comps just for mentioning it.
Though I'm still healing up, I'll be back slinging at the Casbah on Friday, and I'm excited to take the kid see Fun Home at New Village Arts on Saturday. Then I plan on doing a whole lot of nothing to recover from January.

Listings are after the jump.
Stay safe out there. Hopefully this time around, the atmospheric river spares everyone's homes and businesses and studios and we can laugh at how overhyped they are/were.
I love you all.

Things To Do in San Diego: Thursday, January 18-Wednesday, January 24, 2024: Cayucas | Mayer Hawthorne | No Knife | aMiniature | Tomcat Courtney Memorial | Ozomatli | Y La Bamba | Pinback |

I didn't go to the zoo on Wednesday and instead spent the entire day slowly doing listings because I finally caught the funk. It's not COVID, it just feels like a cold, nothing Alka Seltzer Plus and Nyquil can't quash, but I figured if I'm bitching about parents bringing their sick kids to the zoo, and they in turn get me sick, I have to at least try not to go and get everyone else around me sick, too. So a day of rest, and green juice and effervescent tabs and nearly four hours of the Murdaugh hearing and I'm wrapping up my night and ready to go to bed. I just got word that JJUUJJUU has to cancel their Thursday night appearance at the Casbah so it sounds like we're canceling entirely and will be closed for the night. I expect this was a quick 24-hour knockout and I am willing myself to be better and able to rejoin the world on Thursday, and ready for my merch gigs on Saturday and Sunday.

Stay safe and healthy out there.

Things To Do In San Diego: Wednesday, January 25-Tuesday, January 31: Will Sheff/Okkervil River | Windser | Frankie and the Witch Fingers | Inspector | Junior Boys | The Kabbs & The Havnauts | Dark Star Orchestra | Film School | The Wood Brothers |

I ran into an old music scene pal over the weekend who had some stuff to say about this site and wondered why I still do listings if all I ever do is complain about doing the listings and that there are automated ways I could and should be doing them and then they'd be less of a headache. But the truth is, my site, my right to whine, right? I wouldn't do them if I myself wasn't curious and after working for a brief time for a site that uses event scrapers (and having programmed about 90% of the ones that site still uses) when I do look over there and see the site promoting shows that have been canceled or incomplete listings because nobody took the time to edit over them. So I still do these manually and I think one of these days I'll get around to adding a bunch of the venues I include here that aren't currently on my music venues page, but I'm in no rush to do any of that. I like doing what I do and living this chill life and watching my Bravo trash shows while I do them while everyone else in my household is asleep. I won't do them forever, but 16 years in, I'm not stopping anytime soon.

I haven't included big show announcements in awhile, but damn, Livenation announced a show with Beck, Phoenix, Japanese Breakfast, and Sir Chloe and I'd definitely be stoked to catch that one. Casbah keeps announcing a ton of shows, like Beabadoobee at SOMA which went on sale Friday and sold out in a matter or hours. Maybe less. Hopefully our show with 100 gecs does the same when it goes on sale. And I've heard there are fewer than 200 tickets left for Sylvan Esso in September, so don't sleep on those tickets if you want to go.

Stay safe out there.

Wednesday, January 11, 2023

Things To Do in San Diego: Wednesday, January 11-Tuesday, January 17, 2023: The Planet Smashers | Dale Watson | R.A.P. Ferreira | RFTC | Idlehands | Transfer | Richard Marx | Reverend Horton Heat | HR | Pato Banton |

I know you only see me posting about the zoo these days, but I do swear I get out every once in awhile. I'm looking forward to checking out a preview party at The Sound, and I'm hoping to make it to see Transfer on Saturday night, too. There are also lots of new shows being announced, including Sylvan Esso at The Sound, Avey Tare at Casbah and more to come this week. 2023 is going to be a great year for music and it's only just begun.

Full listings after the jump.
Stay safe out there.

Things To Do In San Diego: Friday, December 23: The Cure Christmas Dance Party | Cash'd Out | Trio Gadjo | Infected Mushroom |

I'm really trying to do listings for the next week, but in case I can't get them done, all you need to know is that Exile on Kettner is at the Casbah tomorrow with Andrew McKeag at the helm and it's free! So maybe you'll catch me at the Casbah tonight or tomorrow or both, I haven't quite committed yet, but either way, happy holidays and stay safe out there. Friday listings after the jump.

It's my birthday!! It's statistically probably yours or close to it since all our parents decided to bang around the holidays. Happy birthday to all of you, and my gift to myself is keeping these listings short. I will try to come back later in the week and add show announcements and other music news, but for now, I'm out. Can't wait to see SSPU again tonight for maybe the 20th or 30th time.

Stay safe out there.

Things To Do In San Diego: Wednesday, September 14-Tuesday, September 20, 2022: BAYNK | Foreign Air | Monophonics | Fontaines DC | Maren Morris | Wilco | Dry Cleaning | Bad Bunny | CHAI | Fiestas Patrias |

Fontaines D.C. (Taken 5.21.2019)

I'm not really allowed to say that summer kinda sucks for concerts and there are definitely dozens of exceptions to that theory that we can look to, but there is something magical when fall comes around and artists start doing tours instead of just a slew of festivals and you end up with the problem of too many good things happening on the same day.

That is definitely the case this weekend so hopefully that suck-ass weather we had last week is finally dissipating and we can get back to our beautiful San Diego lives. I've had a very good week, a couple nights of work, lots of days at the zoo, we went to see David Dondero and Davey Tiltwheel at Modern Times, and Darren and I even went snorkeling. The tourists are mostly gone and San Diego can truly be our playground once again.

If I look down the listings, there are at least two or three things I would go to every single night if money was no object and time was more abundant and my energy didn't get so sapped so easily, but I'm happy to have more work on the horizon, more zoo days in my routine, and I'll have to deal with the FOMO that I'm not going to see Wilco this time around.

Hopefully you can find some awesome things to do, too. I may add new show announcements later this week, but I'm pooped and have been working really hard to get out of my all-nighter sleep habits. So maybe check back throughout the week and I'll update when I can.

Stay safe out there.

Things To Do In San Diego: El Vez | Frau Eva | Jim Rao Fan Club | Bayfest with Atmosphere | Willie Nelson | Adia Victoria | Seun Kuti & Egypt 80 | Ikana |

I know I missed a couple days, but I did finally get around to doing the listings. Mostly because my COVID-19 bed rest has my sleep even more messed up than normal, so I'll definitely spend most of the weekend offline...or at least not working and bingeing on whatever shows and movies I can find between all the streaming sites. And probably watch some San Diego Zoo cams, too, because I miss my babies. I'm going to believe that I've already gone through the worst of this illness and that I'll be fine to do listings for the big upcoming Pride and Comic-Con weekends but I guess I can only take it day by day. Time flies, until you're sick and isolating.

Be safe out there. COVID is all around us and as I can attest, it fucking SUCKS.

In addition to the listings, SaN Diego County put together a pretty rad guide called The Upside of Outside that is worth looking at for fun stuff around the county.

Photos: Courtney Barnett at Observatory North Park, December 5, 2021

Courtney Barnett at Observatory (Taken 12.5.21)

I have to start all of this by saying that I have missed a lot of really great shows in 2021. Everyone has to weigh their own risks, but with my dad sick and visiting him in the hospital and being around my nieces who are in school and soccer and out and about in the world, I just wasn't ready to put myself into the thick of shows again. I missed Silversun Pickups. I missed Middle Kids. I missed Julien Baker. I've missed a lot.

But now Darren and I are fully vaccinated and boosted, as is my sister and our parents. Nova is fully vaccinated, as are my nieces (finally). We have good N-95s. We've agreed not to drink at shows. We agreed to go to shows that require vaccines or negative tests, and for this particular show, masks were required for the whole audience, regardless of status, except while actively drinking or eating. So we took our chances and went to the show.

Despite the show being sold out, I was thoroughly impressed by the efficiency getting in. We parked in the garage with no problem. My tickets and photo pass were waiting for me at will call. The vaccine verification was easy peasy. I have a clear backpack to hold my gear and made it through security with no delay. We chose to skip the opener, so I can't say how it was earlier in the evening, but it was simple for us. Since we wanted to limit our time in the venue, we stayed for about an hour of the show - enough time for me to shoot and to hear some of our favorites before we had to get the kid home early enough to not have a sluggish Monday at school. It was a little bit of a bummer for her; getting there late didn't afford the best sightlines, but after she said she was glad she went, too. "I forgot how many of her songs I know!"

And of course, Courtney Barnett is amazing. I was trying to think and I believe this is my 8th time seeing her live. I remember interviewing her before her first Casbah show and saying something to the effect that this would be the smallest venue I'd ever get to see her as she kinda shyly just smiled, and that quickly came to fruition as I have gone on to see her a couple times at House of Blues, a couple times at Observatory, at Pappy and Harriet's, at Outside Lands and a couple others. Her new album, Things Take Time, Take Time, showcases her pattern of brilliant songwriting, of being a wordsmith in message and timing.

I will say as I was waiting for her to come onstage, I had butterflies. I haven't shot a show at a proper venue since I got my new camera. They had the lights down and a fog machine wafting and I was just watching the cloud slowly filter over the crowd and having immense anxiety in my head: this is exactly how an aerosolized virus spreads. But I had to fight that down, try to have a little faith in my fellow humans, and enjoy an inspired show. A note for venues: despite it being winter, you need to keep your ventilation systems running on high. If it's too expensive, add more fans or build Rosenthal-Corsi boxes. Ventilation isn't always about temperature, especially in the midst of a pandemic. Today San Diego's R-eff tipped red, meaning cases are "likely increasing," to be expected after Thanksgiving, but there are mitigations to keep people safer and we should be doing everything possible to keep numbers down and businesses open.

We made it a little more than halfway through the show. Someday I'll get back to showing up for openers. And making it all the way through the encore. But for my first time back, I'll say it was a success. It's at least a start.

Here's the setlist as posted on stage:

    Avant Gardener
If I Don't Hear From You Tonight
    Sunfair Sundown
    Small Poppies
    Elevator Operator
    Need A Little Time
    Nameless,Faceless
    Turning Green
    Depreston
    Rae Street
    History Eraser
    Here's The Thing
Write a List of Things (to Look Forward To)
Nobody Really Cares (If You Don't Go To The Party)
    Pedestrian At Best
    Oh The Night
    Before You Gotta Go

Courtney Barnett followed up her San Diego performance with an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel on Monday night. Watch her performance of "If I Don’t Hear From You Tonight".

CoViD-19: Schools Projected To Fully Reopen This Fall | Biden Creates Supreme Court Commission | Bowen Bikes SD | SD Local Musgrove Throws Padres First Ever No Hitter |

Amur Leopard (Taken 3.19.21)

Thursday was "Zoo Lovers Day" and we didn't make it to the San Diego Zoo. As I shared last night, Darren and I went to the Casbah opening and then had a fun night in the speakeasy. That made for a super lazy day around the house and Darren picking up Yak N Yeti for dinner, which was our first time having it since before the pandemic. I attempted my own saag paneer a few times over the course of the last year, but it's just not the same as getting it from people who know what they're doing. So yum.

Today felt like a good news day overall. Dr. Walensky said she expects schools to be fully in-person this fall and predicted what I've been hoping all week, which is that 12-15 year olds could begin getting vaccinated as early as mid-May. Meanwhile, Jeff Zients said they're not changing vaccine distribution strategies despite new hotspots in the country, which is kinda like saying maybe y'all should've kept mask mandates and mitigation measures and the administration isn't gonna punish states who've been doing the right thing because the ones who reopened too early are now seeing spikes. And then Biden spoke and he's authorized a commission to look into the Supreme Court, which to me is just kinda putting McConnell on notice that we're coming for his decade of obstructionism. Finally, I'm not gonna act like I care much about Major League Baseball though I've been to my share of Padres games, but it is pretty cool that a homegrown pitcher threw the franchise's first ever no-hitter. Especially against Texas. Very satisfying.

The Casbah was featured again on the news, this time on News8, so I'll throw up the link if they make it shareable. In the meantime, stay safe out there and have a great weekend.

Casbah Bartender Gets Fanboy, A Rock and Roll Thriller, Up on Amazon Prime! Rent or Own It Now!

Casbah Bartender Gets Fanboy, A Rock and Roll Thriller, Up on Amazon Prime!

Five years ago, Casbah bartender/bar manager/co-owner Ben Johnson talked his fellow short film makers into making a feature length film. Luckily they didn’t know how large of a task it would be. After two years of filming and almost three years of editing, Fanboy was born, selling out 5 screens at the South Bay Drive-In in San Diego in January and February.

CoViD-19: March 13, 2020 The Day The Music...Paused |Save Our Stages| SDIVA | Photos: Lauren Ruth Ward at Casbah |

one year no shows

It was a year ago today that the Casbah held our last show. It was Lauren Ruth Ward and it was awkward as hell because by that night we were all well aware that things were starting to shut down. Our Saturday night show with Frances Quinlan had already canceled. The WHO had already declared a worldwide pandemic while our president was promising it would all just go away.

I never thought I'd be writing regularly about epidemiologists, that I would grow to understand virologists and scientists and know the names of my County health officer and CDC directors and stop reading music sites almost exclusively for medical journals and publications. I never thought I'd grow to so deeply appreciate County Supervisor Nathan Fletcher and even Greg Cox. We definitely couldn't have seen the summer of unrest that was to come because Black Lives Matter and a significant portion of our fellow Americans didn't and still don't agree.

I hope that someday I'll be back to the tediousness of posting listings of live music shows around San Diego, and while I know some venues have already hosted shows, I'm going to work with the framework of when I'm personally comfortable returning to shows, I'll start posting about them again. In the meantime, people are still getting ill. People are still dying at an incomprehensible pace, even if it is significantly lower than just one or two months ago.

I miss music and going out and interacting with strangers and seeing recognizable faces joined together for our common love of music, but this year has also restructured my values a ton...going to shows for me now means not seeing my parents and family and that's just not a tradeoff I'm ready or willing to make. This could change in a matter of weeks or months, I can't predict, but until then, stay safe out there, remember the past year in all of it's horror and beauty and stay vigilant, stay safe, and rock the shot when you can so we can discover what a new normal will mean for all of us.

San Diego Music News: New Music From Jake Najor | Al Howard Writes | New Casbah Merch

Jake Najor (Taken 1.27.2020)

There were no media briefings today, but there were both a City Council and County Supervisors meeting. I didn't watch either. I'll pore over the deets and get back to you later, though I do know the City Council passed the resolution to add a November ballot measure to dissolve the CRB and create a new Independent Commission on Police Practices, so that's something. I'm currently trying to watch Clueless with Nova and it's so hard knowing Stacy Dash is such an awful person irl. Anyway, thought I'd (mostly) stick to some music news for today. After the jump.
