Jeff's Weekly Pick: Manuok @ Wonderhaus Building August 5, 2010

Scott Mercado is a very creative and talented guy. He designs websites and can literally perform all the instruments on his albums. That in and of itself is no small feat. In addition, his songs are so emotionally charged that it is easy to see the passion he has for his trade. The band is called Manuok and will be performing at the Wonderhaus Building downtown this Thursday. I have not personally seen the performance space, but I have heard it suits intimate shows quite nicely. Manuok is releasing their latest full length, The Old Horse, this week. Having seen Scott play drums, keyboards and guitar in his band and other bands as well, it will be fun to see him playing lead guitar this time around. Get out of the house and go see one of San Diego’s best kept secrets this Thursday. For directions and general info, click here.

Drew Andrews sets the stage.

Final Comic-Con Photos: Sunday

While Sunday might've been the day of the already blown Comic-con wad, it was also a really fun day for me because I got to hang with my Seattle friends that I met last year at the True Blood happy hour. If Kathy Griffin can have her Gays, then I get to have My Nerds. And I wouldn't say so were it not with total affection (and confusion at their topical geek fights which they would alert me to...'um, here we go again...x vs. y in the neverending fight over who would win z battle').

Before I met up with them, I roamed the Comic-Con floor and visited Randall at his Bear vs Fox table. I discovered he was just across the aisle from the creator of Wow Wow Wubbzy (*love*) and bought a children's book for $5. I also happened across Geoff Peterson, the robot from Craig Ferguson (The Late Late Show?), and I asked an awkwardly stupid question of the robot just to get the signed glossy of him and Craig. Fortunately being last in that line put me first in the line to grab a free copy of Shit My Dad Says which I've already finished reading and is entirely worth the hype. As the Con wrapped up, I met My Nerds at the Marriott, and when they asked for a place to chill and eat, I suggested Analog, which has a killer happy hour, even on Sundays, and we ate and drank to our hearts content. When all of that was done, there was a free show at the House of Blues with The Spinto Band and Miniature Tigers that was awesome, so I got that much more time with my Seattle friends. I really hope that I get to see the boys again before next Con, and I have a good feeling that they have some magic brewing with their start-up. To be continued on that aspect, but as a finale, I have to say I was really sad when the Con came to an end, and admittedly spent some time physically recovering, but also had to spend some time recover mentally from the buzz and the high that I experienced all week. Till next year, I'll go back to my regular programming here, but not without hope that I am fortunate enough to participate again next year. More pics if you 'keep on reading'.

More Comic-Con Photos: Saturday

If Wednesday and Thursday were characterized as a wild party, Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Comic-con, at least for me, were a bit of a let down. Mostly because while I'm "press", I'm just more of a pawn, chasing non-celebs and sweating my ass off through the Convention Center. Still, I can't think of a better way to spend my time. I posted my Friday photos, which consisted of some random party shots with a few celebs, but Saturday was more about the Con, and trying to hunt down the Community cast (which I never found), but meeting a really nice Warner publicist along the way. So there you go. Here are my Saturday photos.

I finally checked out Britt Reid's Garage, with a bunch of cool classic cars, a shot up Black Beauty, and honestly, not much else. Some bobble heads and costumes and such, but a quick in and out was all that was necessary.

These costumed fools were passing out comics with coupons for Chik-fil-a. I've still never had a taste, so I can't say if declining the comic/coupon was a mistake or just heart healty.

Tim Pyles was waiting to interview some peeps, so we spent a lot of time around the Nickelodeon booth. Apparently these kids are a big deal. And the kid on the right plays "Spencer" on iCarly (which I've actually watched on the few shifts I've helped at my mom's daycare). He's moving up to another Nick show or something. And supposedly he's from San Diego. I guess I'll find out one day.

Costumed Batman. And Olivia Munn on the right, getting primped after a shoot. Maxim's hottest woman? From G4? I only know as the latest correspondent on The Daily Show.

Pyles interviewed the voices of some show, and the only familiar face to me was Jaime Kennedy, who kept looking at me as I took photos like I was a crazy papparazzo. Maybe I was. Sorry, Jaime. Wasn't trying to freak you out.

Ron Perlman and Katey Segal of 'Sons of Anarchy' did a signing at the Fox booth. I got a couple pictures, but what I thought was really funny was this hostile photo of Ron as he sort of scolded anyone, "I've been trying to get a goddamn drink for the last two hours. " You and me both, Mr. Perlman.

Below is C.S. Lee from Dexter (apparently). Look, I can barely afford HBO, and I'm sure as hell not gonna watch a made for cable show like Dexter on network TV (though I tried). Did I ever mention that as a kid I thought I was Ms. Piggy, at the same time hating her and believing Kermie was my boyfriend? Yep. My first music crush was the singer of The Rainbow Connection.

Later, at Analog, there's Rob from New Mexico (formerly Apes of Wrath), pouring a stiffie. Even later, the Zombie Walk.

That was just the first half of Saturday night. I went to the Comedy Central show at House of Blues, but I have to say I wasn't really captivated by the comedy.

Eventually I left and went to the Casbah and then the Ken Club. Not the brightest plan ever, but I needed my music and I needed my peeps. I survived to make it back to Comic-con on Sunday. More pics later.

Things To Do In San Diego: July 31-August 1, 2010

Today my niece Johanna turns three years old. I don't know if that's the end of the "terrible twos" or just an extension, as I'm told she is my curse for being a jerk of a kid...but regardless, I'll be spending the day at her birthday party with family and friends that remind me just how important friends and family are. While a three year old might love me one second with an endearing, "Tia Rose" in her slight but husky voice, she just as easily turns and wants nothing to do with me. I can handle that. Still, that all means I'll be spending the day web-free. See you at the Casbah later...but until then, just know that my niece has the Comic-con exclusive My Little Pony. And that...that puts her on another geek-brat level entirely.

Video: Rocky Votolato House Show

So I know I have a ton of really old shows that I need to catch up on and I still have some cool Comic-Con celeb photos and whatnot, but I went up to Huntington Beach earlier tonight and caught up with Rocky Votolato playing a house show. I think YouTube rejected a couple of the videos because they exceeded their limit, but I captured the whole show. (Thanks to Jeff for making this happen)

I promise next time (probably next summer) that Rocky is looking for house shows I will make sure he plays in San Diego, whether it's my backyard, or if I have to move all of my furniture out of my living room, or if we have to do it at my parents' house in Chula Vista...we will get him to San Diego. These are amazing shows and I apologize for the awkward camera angle. I also have to say that there were at least three times that I had to suck back tears because it's one thing to connect to music...another entirely to actually have it played acoustic, without mics and amps, right in your face. Hearing Sunlight, or the cover of Let It Be or Montana made me fight that shit back. I've been a fan of Rocky's for a long time, but there's also something incredible about being able to call April and Rocky friends that makes the music touch me even more.

Here are all of the videos (again, except for the couple that YouTube rejected). Click the arrows to see each video. I'll try to upload the rejected videos. But I'll add Sunlight at the bottom from Rocky's last SD performance because the song is so amazing.

For the record, and because I dream of a Sony sponsorship, all of my videos are captured via Sony Cybershots. Best sound compressor ever.

Casbah: New Shows Announced

Since I stayed up super late last night updating the Casbah calendar and since I wasn't very nice to commenter (blahblahblah) who complained that Jeff's Weekly Pick was stupid for highlighting an already sold out show, I thought I'd let you in on all the newly added shows at the Casbah. The new site was launched in January and it seems some people are still missing some things after all this time. When you go to CasbahMusic.com there are several pull down menus. The one you should care most about is "Schedule" (though the grammar police told me that technically it should say Calendar). When you pull down the menus, "Extended" lets you look at the calendar with pop up bios, photos, and occasional links to photos and videos. "Simple" lets you just look at the basic calendar with clickable band links. You should always check the "Outside Casbah" and "Newest Added", too. Outside Casbah is where you'll find Casbah produced shows at other venues, like House of Blues, the Belly Up, The Loft at UCSD Price Center, The San Diego Woman's Club and more.

On to the shows:

8/4- The Bloodflowers, The Secret Seven, Get Your Death On
8/5- The Napoleon Complex, Misc. Ailments, Of Sons and Ghosts
8/10- The Terror Pigeon Dance Revolt, Rafter
9/19- Ratatat & Guests @ House of Blues
9/22- The Jim Jones Revue & Guests
9/24- BLOWOFF with DJs Bob Mould & Richard Morel
9/27- The Felice Brothers & Guests
10/6- The Reverend Peyton's Big Damn Band, Mighty Regis
10/14- Frightened Rabbit, Plants and Animals, Bad Veins @ House of Blues
10/21- Azure Ray @ The Loft at UCSD
10/27- Seabear & Guests
11/10- Best Coast
11/13- Stars & Guests @ House of Blues

There are anywhere from 3 to 15 shows added in a week, and there's no regular day when the calendar is updated. The shows confirm and they go on the calendar. Check back frequently or you'll be like (BlahBlahBlah) complaining that Joanna Newsom is sold out.

Free Music Roundup: July 20-26, 2010

Let me catch you up with my life for a second. After doing Comic-con all week (and at least one party or show every night), I was absolutely wrecked. Every muscle and bone in my body ached. I came home on Sunday night after 10:30 and my neighbors were having a party (that had started at 3 pm, by the way. And one that they promised "wouldn't be noisy".) I've created my share of noise over the years, so I tolerated the party for a while. Then it got later. I sent a text message. No reply. I called. No Reply. Then they really blew it by chanting/cheering during the True Blood repeat, which I was seeing for the first time. I actually went out of my apartment midshow and yelled to them so as not to miss my show. I believe it was something like, "[neighbor's name], It's 12:30! On a Sunday! Time to call it a night!" And then I slammed my screen door on my foot. FML.

I am officially that person. Their friends gathered their bibles and left and I was content because I was finally going to get sleep. And man, did I sleep. Well, until the big mouth salon chick opened up shop at 7 a.m. to catch her clients up on her slutty weekend rendezvous. The same time she starts, so does the construction that has that awful beeping that Caterpillers make when they're in reverse. All. Day. Long. *sigh* I remember when Kensington was quiet and I was the loudest one in the hood.

I attempted jumping right into catching up with updating the Casbah calendar and email and posts and job hunting and other "work" come Monday, but my apartment was frightening. So I cleaned. Three loads of laundry. Find places for all the Comic-con crapola. Go through mail. Put all CDs and press kits in one place. Clean the fridge. Clean the litter box. Do the dishes. Dust. More dishes. Vacuum. Make dinner. Do dishes from dinner. Recycle junkmail and magazines from 2009. Fold laundry. Put freshly laundered sheets on the bed. Play with cat while attempting to make bed. Bleed on freshly washed white sheets due to gushing cut from playful but overzealous cat.

It was well into nighttime before I felt like everything was in it's right place and I could finally get to business. I finally started to read the last few days worth of email, one by one. All 323 of them. Naturally, in all of that there was a lot of bullshit, but there were also a lot of free downloads to offer. I haven't listened to all of these though I did sample and they cover a spectrum of genres, so you're just going to have to listen on your own and see if you think they're worth downloading. Unlike last week, most of these bands are not touring through San Diego. I'm putting the locals and the touring bands at the top, but there will be a lot more if you click on 'keep on reading'.

For all downloads (except Fever Sleeves which is at Mediafire), right click and 'save as' or 'save link as' to download depending on your browser. These are all externally hosted by various official sites which have cleared for posting but reserve the right to remove the links at any time, so download them while ya can. This by no means covers all new music, this is just the music that was sent to me over the past seven days to share with my readers.

I know there were plenty of people just waiting for Comic-con to get out of town so life could go back to normal, but I wasn't one of those people. I had an absolute blast the last week, though I'm exhausted, my body aches, and my apartment is a disaster. I'll get some more photos up from the last couple days and hopefully get through the bulging inbox, too. I'll do my best to come up for air when I can, but consider me off the radar for at least another day or two.

Jeff's Weekly Pick: Joanna Newsom @ San Diego Woman's Club July 29, 2010

Suffice it to say, the harp and indie music would appear to be akin to oil and water. Enter Northern California's folk harpist (and pianist) Joanna Newsom. Though this talented and critically acclaimed artist recently released her third full length, Have One On Me, Thursday marks Joanna's second visit to San Diego (ed note:apparently Joanna opened for Sufjan Stevens at the Casbah. Thanks TDM for the info). She was scheduled to play here during one of her previous tours when she developed a throat infection which resulted in her cancelling that show and others as well. It also marked a changed vocal style from the one prior to the ailment. What hasn't changed are the song structures , which can last for as little as five but sometimes up to ten minutes and longer. The result is that the songs are greater in sum than in parts. That is a wonderful formula for the stage, which happens to be the intimate San Diego Woman's Club in Bankers Hill. I have been looking forward to seeing Joanna for some time. My wait will end this week. What will not end are the wonderful memories from what promises to be a stellar performance. Those can last a lifetime.

Robin Pecknold sets the stage.

Comic-con 2010: Friday Photos

While Thursday night was full of awesome, it also kicked my ass, making Friday a very lazy day. Not to mention I had to get my NBC listings in and a couple posts up, so I didn't actually leave the house until after 5 pm, grabbing a lifesaving sandwich from Clem's (the San Diegan is the bomb), and catching the bus downtown. I was heading to a party at Analog, though I understood that the doors were at 6:30 and The Good Listeners would be playing at 7, that was not the case. Doors were at 7 for media with the actual party starting at 8 and the band playing at 9. It was a good thing Aaron and Heather work there and they entertained me while I waited. We only stayed for a couple songs because the band didn't start until almost 9:45, though I did have a chance to meet Clark and he was a very nice guy. (I'm making up for it by watching their DVD, Don't Quit Your Daydream, right now.)

Pyles met me at Analog and we headed to a party at the Hard Rock Hotel, passing Stingaree on the way, where they had a photo/press line with the cast of Spartacus, took some photos, then got to the Hard Rock. Unfortunately, I think we arrived too late and most of the celebrities were gone, but there were a few and we snapped photos. I also have to say we met a couple guys who were outside the red ropes and they were awesome, so happy birthday to you, Paul P., I hope to see you again. And I'm confident with your charisma, charm, and personality that you won't be getting other people's coffee for long, though I'm still not entirely convinced you aren't an actor and tricked the hell outta me.

James Frain (plays Franklin Mott on True Blood)

From there, the night was kind of a bust...the line for the EA Sports line was long, Stingaree wouldn't let us in with shorts/sneakers, and most of downtown felt like, well, a Friday night in downtown, i.e. somewhere I didn't wanna be. After a quick stop in Ciro's, it was time to bid adieu to downtown to recharge the batteries for tomorrow. For more pics, click 'keep on reading'.

Bonus: Check out the True Blood trailer that was released at the panel:

Season 3: Comic-Con Second Half Preview

Analog Bar. They've been open a couple weeks, but the official grand opening is happening on Thursday, July 29.

Tim Pyles: Superhero

Seth Green got in on the superhero fun. The cast of Spartacus did a press line at Stingaree.

Corey Feldman (l) and Adam Scott were at the Hard Rock. I think Adam is promoting Piranha 3D, but I was a big fan of his role on the HBO series Tell Me You Love Me.

Thomas Jane plays Ray Drecker on HBO's Hung. He had some interesting footwear...

Ciro's was converted by the Cartoon Network. After 3 days of the Con, I bought some slices but was too exhausted to even eat them. Yikes. I'm going to bed. Hasta mañana!
