Things To Do In San Diego: Wednesday, April 20, 2022-Tuesday, April 26, 2022: Hasan Minhaj | Hot Chip | Spellling | Electric Six | Dent May | Earthfair | Orville Peck | Beabadoobee |

Beabadoobee Appears At Humphrey's On Tuesday Night (Taken 10.18.2019)

I was having a conversation with a friend about whether I'll ever get back to the pre-pandemic lifestyle of three or four or seven shows a week and I was quick to answer that it's just not in the cards for me anymore. For starters, I've given up rideshare apps entirely. After they poured millions into Prop 22 and since D quit driving, I'd just rather not support, which makes some shows logistically a little more challenging. I love public transit, but it is made for daytime commuters, not so much late night revelers. Nova is older, so it's not like we can just put her to bed and head out on the town, it has to be a little more planned when we're leaving, or for those all-ages shows she might like, if I can request and secure three tickets instead of just one or two, which publicists generally hate and decline. On top of all that, we're still helping my dad three or four times a week before his bedtime, which ends up taking an hour or so with the drive, right when a headliner would be coming on at most venues, so we just have to arrange too much with our schedules.

And I assure you, I'm not complaining, but after two years, life is different. I'm different. The risks assessment is different, where none existed before. So you might see me bopping around at shows even if that means fewer of them. And I'll work the shows I'm asked to. But I also may show up 5 minutes before a headliner and cut out halfway through the set just to get by. It's all different. But that doesn't mean that I don't thoroughly encourage massive enjoyment of the great shows coming to town. If this week was pre-pandemic, for example, you'd probably see me at Hasan Minhaj, Wallows, Hot Chip and then racing to catch Spellling afterward, Dent May, Earthfair, Pink Mountaintops, Orville Peck, and beabadoobee. In this life right now, I may actually make it to one or two of those, if I'm really ambitious. It doesn't mean I'm any less grateful that we have amazing options in this City. But I still think if you're inside you should be masking up.

Congratulations to all the SDMA nominees and winners. I hope it was a great night.

Stay safe out there.

CoViD1-19: County & City of San Diego Briefings | San Diego Music Awards Go Virtual

My photo subjects have been super limited these days
I know Costco doesn't really count as getting out of the house, but that's as far as I made it today. Also hit Petco and Petsmart but neither carries the prescription NexGard we give Ficus so I'll check PetMeds. The press briefings were par for the course today, mostly the County and City just reiterating and clarifying what the Governor said this morning, but I have to say, Kevin Faulconer has been pretty good about seeming impartial, but over the past two weeks has just thrown that out the window. I've said it's like a game of chicken, the City and County "demanding" to open and the Governor being like, 'yo, chill out, I was gonna do that anyway' and then when the governor loosens things that he was already gonna loosen based on data then the County and the City peacock and puff their feathers and are like, 'yeah, we stood up to the Governor and got our way.' It's pretty comical if you watch it everyday like I've been doing. As things loosen, the 'whatabouts' increase, too. With haircut salons opening, 'whatabout' nail salons? With tennis courts opening, 'whatabout' doubles badminton? With churches opening, 'whatabout' gyms? People just really show their ugly self-interest and it's gross. The hardest part of the pandemic will be the cementing of the notion that a significant portion of human beings are pure garbage. I had to block one of my dad's childhood friends from Facebook today because of the stupid memes he was posting. It's not pretty out there. Links after the jump.

San Diego Music Awards 2019: Winners

I had the pleasure of attending the 2019 San Diego Music Awards on Monday night. I also had the pleasure of live-tweeting the whole thing for SoundDiego, which in retrospect, maybe I should've done as a thread? At any rate, I didn't have a chance to post much of anything yesterday, but I promised I'd share this year's winners.

You can also find the list at the official site, but I decided to post them in the order they were announced instead. When you look at it from this perspective, it makes it interesting, because while many of the performers found themselves winning the award announced immediately after their performances, it wasn't the case with everyone. So, for example, Veronica May and Casey Hensley both performed and won their categories, but the rest of the performers did not--but they're still winners in our book!!

I didn't get to schmooze nearly as much as I would've liked as I was confined to my Chromebook the whole night, but the performances were pretty great, starting with Ariel Levine and closing with Planet B, and Veronica May, Shane Hall, Casey Hensley, Vokab Company, and the Redwoods Revue all getting stage time. Of course, the event sold out with the promise of a Jason Mraz performance, which was actually some Java Joe All-Stars who wrote a special tribute to Jave Joe Flammini, with lots of allusions to smoking weed in the parking lot behind Java Joe's and the years the venue was a staple in its various locations. It was definitely a fun night and the after party at the Casbah was raging, too, but this old lady was tuckered and had to call it an early night. Full winners below and list of original nominees are after the jump.

2018 San Diego Music Awards at House of Blues

It was another great night on Monday as the San Diego Music Awards were held at the House of Blues. The air was electric, the vibe celebratory, and the beverages flowing. I got to sit with our SoundDiego crew, which was especially awesome as several of our own crew were presenters, performers, and a couple even honored with awards. You can see the full story at SoundDiego. More than the awards, however, it's super awesome to see and hear so much talent in the same room at the same time, and the after party at the Casbah was off the chain and a great chance to catch up with so many old friends. Full list of winners below and more phone cam pics after the jump.

Celtic Crossroads feat. Colin Clyne, Patric Petrie, and David Lally 6/15/2011

A few weeks ago, I got a message from Colin Clyne (SDMA nominee for Best Acoustic) inviting me to an upcoming show in Oceanside. I first met Colin back at an event that Peggy Calhoun had put together at U-31, and I've been booking him at West Coast Tavern on occasion over the months. Unfortunately, sometimes I can't be at WCT on Thursdays if I have to work at another show...the unpredictability of freelancing...so I really hadn't seen Colin play in some time. When Saturday rolled around, I was at the OB Street Fair and decided to see if Colin's offer was still open and within an hour or so, I was getting dropped off at his place to spend the day in Oceanside along with his lovely wife Fiona, Patric Petrie and their friend Tom.

I didn't really have any expectations of the day or night but it ended up turning into an all around great weekend. We arrived in Oceanside around 4pm, quickly unloaded gear into the Sunshine Brooks Theatre, and went to a bar next door that had food, beer, and a hodgepodge band playing in the middle of the afternoon. We had a beer before the musicians returned to the theatre. The rest of us decided we would be of no use in the theatre and returned to the bar. Celtic Crossroads opened it's doors around 6:30 and was about ten tickets shy of a sellout. There were friends and fans and a ton of seniors that gave the impression that they attend any event held in the theatre. I only mention the seniors because the bar where we had been drinking had a hip-hop show, so you can imagine the hilarity of the culture clash during intermission as 70 year old white women spilled onto the side walk with 20-something Samoan, Filipino, Latino and African-American kids. Oh, and there was a mobile tattoo bus in front. I loved it.

Anyway, back to the show. The idea was to have the three performers from Ireland and Scotland play some original songs, a couple traditional songs, and some big group cover songs. I was plenty entertained and I was impressed by all of the musicians on stage. Admittedly, I heard three ladies leave at intermission because they wanted traditional songs, which by their book probably meant 6 different renditions of "Danny Boy", but the rest of the audience seemed happy throughout the show, though I'm not sure David Lally really assessed the crowd before attempting a singalong to Little Lion Man by Mumford and Sons.

Here's a playlist of some of the night's music:

After the show, we went to Davina's Cabo Lounge...we were about 18 people...so getting tables was complicated but once we did, we had a fun time though we were obviously fish out of water. At the end of the night, I stayed with Colin and Fiona and we rehashed the night till about 4 in the morning until I retired to their guest bedroom. When we all awoke and showered and such, they took me home to let Pascha out and we headed over to West Coast Tavern for Resurrection Brunch with Robin Roth.

Let me say this very clearly. Do not ever attempt to go drink for drink with a Scotsman. You will lose. Colin's friend Alan joined us and we ended up spending the entire afternoon at WCT talking about music and Alan's colorful history in music. When we were finally done there five hours later, we went to Bar Pink, and when we were done there, we went to the Casbah. Someone should've put a fork in me at that point, but I continued on to see Tune-Yards at Soda Bar and then hung out with my neighbors after I got home. I suppose sometimes you have to let go and that I did for sure, and came out on the other side with some great friends and great memories.

You Can Wreck My Home Anytime... You Dirty Little Homewreckers...

Give Em Hell

little hurricane | Myspace Music Videos

Okay, so this post isn't going to win me any awards or probably teach you anything new, but If you're new to San Diego, and didn't know, The San Diego Music Award winning duo, Little Hurricane's new record, "Homewrecker" just dropped on itunes and if it doesn't win something at the SDMA's this year, then I'm going to hand them one of mine. (I'm just a pussy-lipped singer/songwriter with open mic generics anyways...) I've already listened to the album thrice, and my ears won't quit making out with my headphones. @LILHURRY's frontman, Tone, has a voice that is about ready to explode, and if you haven't met CC, then you've possibly missed the hottest drummer San Diego's ever known. (I'm totally gonna research chick drummers in SD and do a post on it... so feel free to nominate the hottest chick drummers in the "comments" section.

The best way to describe their sound is to say that they're a mix of dirty blues and california surf. They're similar to the Black Keys, White Stripes, or Cage the Elephant, but with Jon Foreman's (Switchfoot) voice. The album is wicked consistent with great songs like "Sweet Pea", "Homewrecker" and "Give Em Hell". They are a "MUST SEE" whenever they're in town and they'll be playing at SXSW 3 or 4 times this week. (You can see where on their myspace.) They are having their album release at the Casbah on April 2nd with Get Back Loretta, River City, and Low Volts. (Why it's not a "Featured" concert is beyond me... get with it, Casbah...) (9:00 start time, buy your tickets before it sells out.) (Also... if you guys want me to play a tambourine or sell merch... I will... seriously...)

I only have a small critique on the album. I've seen them play live 3 or 4 times, and I know Tone can go off even bigger on his vocals than he showed on these tracks. I would have loved to sit in the studio with them and have him scream into the mic so that it ruined his voice for a month and a half. I feel like he held a little bit of the dirtiness back, but on the other hand, CC did do a great job on her vocals. (I know that's kind of a critique, but I'm a pitch guy, ask Holslin... and even perfect 10's can miss a note or two...)

If they don't follow this album with a live record, I will go on a hunger strike and camp outside of the San Diego Zoo flinging poo at people. (That one was for you, Rosey... You go to the San Diego Zoo too much... Me and Tim Pyles both agree. I'm also not mad that you didn't invite me to SXSW, but still asked me to write in the blog. Whatever.) I'm gonna go ahead and call it now- when their live record comes out, it better win a SDMA or I'll give them my other one.

This album and band are so good, Seth Combs would probably clap once or twice.

2010 San Diego Music Award Winners

It doesn't look like the San Diego Music Awards have been listed on the official site quite yet, so since I failed to live-tweet last night, I've compiled the winners today. Some shockers, some not so shocking, but it was such a fun night all around. There are always things that can be improved and hopefully as the music community grows, so will the academy to make sure people get nominated in the right categories. I suspect my personal education of the Electronic and DJ scenes will grow this week at the SDMTC and it's good to know that more hip-hop players will be involved in the future. I was a slacker blogger and hardly took any photos, but you can see a nice gallery over on SoundDiego.com

Another perspective on the San Diego Music Awards

Josh already posted about the awards from his perspective, so I don't really have a whole lot to add, but since I took pics, I thought I'd share them. He is certainly right that last night was a great night. I rode out to Viejas with Ben and Brian from The Long and Short Of It and while I made it in during The Burning of Rome's performance, they were, um...looking for parking...*ahem*...so it was pretty funny that while the first four awards were announced, they hadn't yet made it inside to claim their Best Hard Rock Album award. Josh got their late, too, but we found one another quickly and it was pretty amazing to have my hand on his heart beating while his category was announced. I know that he didn't expect to win but I'm happy and proud that he did, and I'm especially glad that his award was in the first group or waiting might've lead to a high anxiety evening.

There were so many amazing musicians and people at the awards- far too many to name here- but once again I felt completely privileged to be a part of this music community. Unlike 80% of the presenters who have no clue about the scene, I was proud of my friends for their amazing performances, to all the winners, to all the nominees, and to the HUNDREDS of bands and musicians that do the grind and play for the sheer joy of playing music that didn't get nominated. For the full list of winners, click here.

It was funny that I was attempting to tweet all the winners, but dropped off somewhere around best new artist. After the award ceremony, I went to the after party to see The Styletones and was happy to sit down to regain feeling in my feet. The Styletones are the perfect party band and it was nice to be able to chat with people that I didn't get to talk to at the ceremony. Unfortunately, all good things come to an end, and Josh and Kitty were done, so after waiting for my saucy ass long enough, I was summoned to the valet area and we were on our way. Incidentally, it was just about midnight, so my party didn't end there, but at the Ken Club where Miggs was spinning records.

Again, it was a fantastic evening. I wish nights like that could happen more often, but it gives me something to once again look forward to for next year. (All the photos are from my camera except the two with me in them, courtesy of Marie Haddad.)

More pics if you 'keep on reading'.

San Diego Music Awards- Tonight!!

This morning I wrote a huge post about the SDMAs but it went in a direction I didn't want to go so I deleted it. I love the San Diego Music Awards. I've always had a good time at the ceremony. I've voted with the public vote for as long as I can remember and am honored to get to vote with the academy the past couple of years. I wish the Reader would stop publishing the same nonsense from the disgruntled people who are not nominated year after year, but that's Blurt for ya. Does everyone who deserved to get nominated make the cut? Certainly not. But let's get together and celebrate the amazing music we have in this town. I might even wear a party dress tonight!

Mostly I just wanted to say, congratulations to all the nominees and good luck tonight. There are some competitive categories and my love is split many ways. For obvious reasons, I don't share who I voted for but I'll be sitting there with those same knots in my stomach. I am proud of all of my friends who are nominated and I'm proud that so many of my blog contributors are nominated as well (even if they all fell off the posting after their tours.)

Big love to sd:dialed in contributors:

Abraham- Team Abraham - Best Pop
Jake- The Styletones- Best New Artist
Petro- Swim Party- Best Alternative
Josh Damigo- Best Local Recording
#$^%&(@)#%*#^($#@- Drew Andrews- Best Alternative Album/Album of the Year
Matthew- Transfer- Best Rock

Good luck, and see you all in a couple hours!!
