I know I've been all over the place this week but gotta keep chugging along. I'm always trying to navigate this existence and how to make ends meet and the one thing I completely left off the list was the simplest of all: show up. Whether that means coming to shows that I'm involved with or not, the validity of this whole site is best demonstrated by supporting the local music and shows that are posted here daily.
That said, I've got a slew of shows coming up and one I'm particularly excited about is taking place next Saturday at the Ken Club. Dynamite Walls, Jesse LaMonaca and the Dime Novels and The Morgansterns (from LA) will all be performing for your enjoyment. If you haven't been to the Ken Club in a while, I suggest you change that. My showcase at Eleven was fine but since they brought in a new talent buyer, I was left to fend for myself and my dear friends at the Ken Club stepped it up to let me host some fun shows. I know that it sometimes seems like all the good stuff happens in North Park, but for your information, I've walked from Kensington to Bar Pink and The Whistle Stop and it's not that far (1.7 and 2.7 miles, respectively.)
This week I'll post videos and such from all three bands, but in the meantime, enjoy your weekend after you add August 13th at the Ken Club to your iPhone, BlackBerry, Droid, or whatever it is that you use to keep track of where you need to be.

Johnny Rad Fest IV
This weekend Johnny Rad Fest returns to San Diego, kicking off tonight at Til-Two Club and then continuing on to the Ken Club on Friday and Saturday. Tickets are still available for each night and can be prepurchased. For all the information you need, check out the site here.

Stimy Benefit II: Ken Club, 2.19.2011
Though I was up at Sunset Sessions on Saturday night, the second Stimy benefit was well attended and well documented. Michael has been posting some photos this week from last Wednesday's benefit at the Casbah and will be posting more, but Jason Bang sent over these videos and wanted me to share them. I'm sorry I couldn't be in two places at once, because I really would have liked to see these performances.

newsy bits/Art Around Adams Ken Club After-Party
I have to admit that even though I live a block away from the Ken Club, I was finding it hard to motivate to head over for the Art Around Adams official after-party. With a little coaxing, I made my way over, but specifically went without my usual baggage. I took my keys, my phone, some cash, and my I.D and ATM card. I specifically left my camera at home. I wanted to enjoy the show, enjoy the crowd, enjoy the pool challenge that Kevin threw down and not feel like I was "working". It ended up being a really great night.
The show was slated to start at 8 pm, but the bands started much later. The lineup had been changed; originally billed with Arrows, White Apple Tree, Monsters From Mars and Scarlet Symphony (in that order), they were rearranged so that the lineup was the same with the exception of Arrows being moved from the first spot to the last. I got there shortly after 9 and the bands hadn't started, so I had the pleasure of meeting Harvey Bodie, Brett's father and original owner of Bodie's, the Chee-Chee, and other bars in San Diego for years. He asked if I had a drink and when I told him I was just having water, he said, "I don't trust anyone who doesn't drink." Naturally I ordered myself a cocktail.
Kevin finally showed up, so after a couple games of pool (Current series score was left at 1-1), White Apple Tree kicked off the night with a great set. I seriously love this band and apparently so did the modern dancers that hit the dancefloor toward the end of the set. You'll have to check TheMixsterSD.com for the video of that fun.
When the band finished, Kevin and I attempted to finish our pool showdown, but the tables were taken, so instead we got our clocks cleaned by the fierce pairing of A.J. and Matt who ended up running the table for most of the night.
I joined some friends at the bar and I guess that's when I felt a release...it was nice just to hang out with friends for a change. As much as I love live music, I tend to over-immerse myself in the experience at times, worrying so much about getting photos and video, that I sometimes miss the little things that make going out so much fun. It was a great night, and while I was there I had several conversations that make me really appreciate living in San Diego...a huge city and a small town all at once. Some of my chats are just for me, but some of them I can share.
My friend Jared, bass player for Augustana was there, along with guitar/mandolin player of the band, Chris, who told me they're off for about a month before hitting the road again with Counting Crows and a few shows with Switchfoot, too. Some of the tour dates are available here. Unfortunately the tour is mostly in the midwest and east and won't be coming around the west at all. They were at the Ken in support of Arrows...Jared has mixed their EPs and is helping to record their first full-length record.
I have to say it was really great talking shop with them and time flew by before I'd realized I'd missed the rest of the bands. The bands got so behind that it was looking like Arrows wouldn't get to start until nearly 1 am, so they decided not to play. I have to say that I can't blame them for making the decision, and in no way should it reflect poorly on them since they were there from the late afternoon for soundcheck and all. Perhaps the booking of four bands was a little over-ambitious.
So then there's last call, Careless Whisper on the jukebox, final shots, the bar sweep, and then there's dozens of people on the street, filtering to after parties, waiting for cabs, making burrito plans. I bumped into John Paul, formerly of Grand Ole Party and currently in The Hot Moon. He's got a solo project in the works. He told me it's called Vegetarian Werewolf, a nickname he apparently gave himself at four years old, and he's making his debut at Tin Can on July 8. Aaron Swanton is recording his record.
As I wandered across the street, there was Aaron, and we chatted for an hour or so about everything; music, recording, the show, the Ken Club, his studio, and his own solo stuff that he's recording. It's really great that in a musical landscape that can be so hard to navigate, that there are people like Aaron who deeply believe in creating and sharing without regard to some ultimate scheme.
As I said, ultimately I was glad to go out, to revel in a packed Ken Club on a Saturday night. Having lived in the neighborhood for almost a dozen years, it was kinda like back when I first moved in and I appreciated the nostalgia. Looks like I have to make a point to soak it all in more often.

Art Around Adams 2010: Back to the Streets is finally here! Some of you have been looking forward to this event all year; others have just discovered it. Either way, the wait's finally over! Join us tomorrow, Saturday June 5th, from 3-9 p.m. for more than 1.6 miles of art, music, and fun. Then prepare to have your senses blown at the official after-party...kick-off at 8 p.m. at the Kensington Club.
No matter how you look at it, this day's going to rock. Download the official program with full lineup here and start planning your day!
Points to remember:
- Information Booth is located at 3441 Adams Ave (grab your program when you arrive).

Friday Night In San Diego!
Soooo, you should know by now that I'm having a party at my house tomorrow night. If you wanna come and don't have the address, shoot me an email. It will be early so my neighbors don't flip (BYOB and all that shit), but after we will take the party to The Ken Club for the Whiskey Rebellion benefit for the Leukemia/Lymphoma Society. The Long And Short of It, The Postals, Mad Mummies and Rich White Males will all be performing. The show is $5 and raffle tickets will be available 5 for $5. 100% of the cover and raffle tickets go to the Society. There's also a tax id code if your business would like to donate items for the raffle.

Another perspective on the San Diego Music Awards
Josh already posted about the awards from his perspective, so I don't really have a whole lot to add, but since I took pics, I thought I'd share them. He is certainly right that last night was a great night. I rode out to Viejas with Ben and Brian from The Long and Short Of It and while I made it in during The Burning of Rome's performance, they were, um...looking for parking...*ahem*...so it was pretty funny that while the first four awards were announced, they hadn't yet made it inside to claim their Best Hard Rock Album award. Josh got their late, too, but we found one another quickly and it was pretty amazing to have my hand on his heart beating while his category was announced. I know that he didn't expect to win but I'm happy and proud that he did, and I'm especially glad that his award was in the first group or waiting might've lead to a high anxiety evening.
There were so many amazing musicians and people at the awards- far too many to name here- but once again I felt completely privileged to be a part of this music community. Unlike 80% of the presenters who have no clue about the scene, I was proud of my friends for their amazing performances, to all the winners, to all the nominees, and to the HUNDREDS of bands and musicians that do the grind and play for the sheer joy of playing music that didn't get nominated. It was funny that I was attempting to tweet all the winners, but dropped off somewhere around best new artist. After the award ceremony, I went to the after party to see The Styletones and was happy to sit down to regain feeling in my feet. The Styletones are the perfect party band and it was nice to be able to chat with people that I didn't get to talk to at the ceremony. Unfortunately, all good things come to an end, and Josh and Kitty were done, so after waiting for my saucy ass long enough, I was summoned to the valet area and we were on our way. Incidentally, it was just about midnight, so my party didn't end there, but at the Ken Club where Miggs was spinning records.
Again, it was a fantastic evening. I wish nights like that could happen more often, but it gives me something to once again look forward to for next year. (All the photos are from my camera except the two with me in them, courtesy of Marie Haddad.)

SD:Dialed In Presents... This Friday at Ken Club
So, I'm a slacker and didn't make a flier for the show on Friday...but McHank stepped up and made one for us. The show features two amazing local bands, Hialeah and Marasol, as well as my favorite San Franciscans, Low Red Land, who are bringing along their friends Appomattox from Brooklyn.
This is gonna be an awesome show of the face melting variety, so I really hope everyone can make it out.

Rosey's Diary: April 20-24, 2009
After an exhausting weekend at Coachella and very little computer time, it shouldn't be surprising that I took a couple night's off from everything and vegged out. I had over 400 emails to sift through and attempted to make sense of them all by creating a much needed calendar and whatnot. I've been trying to move this site into a better format, which is taking a bit longer than planned, but along with that, I'm dipping my toes into a little bit of this and that. Tim Gonzalez from Amenity contacted me a couple weeks earlier about their video release party, so I spent a couple days helping them out on that before I was finally ready to emerge back into San Diego night life. Funny how a couple days can make me spring back to life. In this post: Pheromones at Bondi, The Old In Out at Casbah, Amenity at X1FM, Kingdom of Magic, Prize Country, and Hostile Combover at Casbah, and Loom, Prize Country, and Kingdom of Magic at Radio Room. All after the jump.
Wednesday rolled around and after a couple days of being cooped up in the opium den, it was time to spread my wings. I'd finally finished my listings for the week and noticed that The Pheromones were playing a free show at Bondi. The show was being put on by Shindy.TV. The last time I saw a show at Bondi was during spring ASR in 2008, so I thought it was a good chance to check it out again, while also getting to see Craig play, and also learning what shindy.tv was all about. I can't lie- the sound is still mushy and the room isn't really meant for bands, and maybe it has to do with it being an early show, but it felt like a corporate work party and Jake and I were the crashers. Despite that, they had $4 Trumer Pils and I was out to have a good time, so we just went with the flow and stayed for most of the show. I mentioned before that Craig gave me a crash course in music appreciation and I really like what The Pheromones have got going on. Not my typical scene, but I always feel a little more alive and a little bit more carefree after seeing them perform.
After we had enough of the downtown sport coat and t-shirt crowd, we had to make like homing pigeons to be among our people at the Casbah where we caught The Old In Out. Their dirty garage noise was just what I needed to keep the party going.
I got to the show on time, but got caught up in a long conversation at the back bar with Devon, the drummer of Kingdom of Magic. He does sound and roadie gigs when he's home, so he was telling some great road stories. I made it in to see Modern Rifles but it was so dark and I don't really know the guys, so the few pics I did take are not worth posting. Their CD has blown me away time and time again and I'm glad I was able to catch them again recently.
After MR, Kingdom of Magic took the stage. Holy shit. I love to get my hardcore fix every now and then and they totally brought it. I couldn't take my eyes off Devon who was just a total beast on the kit.
The rest of the band brought it just as hard. I guess when most hardcore bands tour, they still do the all ages circuit or play house parties to get town to town which is cool and DIY and all, but it's music that speaks to a whole different side of me and I love seeing it live, so perhaps I should do my research to find other bands doing it so I don't have to wait every 6 or 8 months for my fix of bands that are familiar.
Prize Country was after Kingdom of Magic and this is the band that I always love seeing, not only because they're perhaps more punk than hardcore, with catchier melodic songs, but they have some really great tattoos that I always like to check out. Sorry for sounding so fan girl and obviously I see a lot of people with a lot of tattoos all the time, but they have ones that I actually look at and it makes me think maybe one day I'll get some ink.
Closing out the night was local boys Hostile Combover who just brought the whole night full circle proving that some nights can really have the perfect cohesive bill.
After the show, Miggs was spinning records at the Ken so I decided to drop by to finish up what was quite a stellar evening of music.
The next morning I worked at the family daycare for the day. Just me and my dad and 6 kids all day long. That is one hell of a day with a lot of diaper changing. After that I swung by the Open Door Session at X1FM where Republic of Letters was set to play. I love these boys and seeing them live again was great. It felt like it had been far too long. (note: catch them this weekend at Art Around Adams)

After catching up with the boys after their set, I swung home to take care of my pets before making my way to Radio Room. There was a lot going on that night, but Prize Country and Kingdom of Magic were playing again, this time with Loom, so I wanted to get my fill once again, and I sometimes don't give Radio Room enough love. I went to the show by myself, but I certainly wasn't alone as Bearpaw rolled up with the fast crowd in their "Cool Bus".
Loom is great and I caught them before at the Casbah with Prize Country, so I knew I was gonna enjoy their set. I always like bands that add unconventional instrumentation to music, and Loom has it covered with a violinist. They had some lights onstage so I thought I would play around with them a bit.
Unfortunately, the other bands didn't have lights, so I was challenged, but both of them played amazing sets once again and I was glad that I chose to stick in my neck of the woods for the night. I guess they didn't believe me the night before when I told them I'd see them again. Sometimes you just can't get enough.
It was the perfect way to unwind after daycare and you can be sure that I'll be there again. When Prize Country comes to SD they usually play 2 nights in a row, and I only hope they bring Kingdom of Magic and Loom once again the next time around.
With that, I'll end the post and pick up where I left off another time.

I met Mike Down for the first time and caught up with Tim for a bit until Andrew was off air and could greet us. He showed the guys around the studio and they loved it. They did about a 20 minute interview, played some Amenity tracks on air, all the while old Chula Vista peeps were logged into the chat room. It was a great experience all around and has definitely opened up some doors for things to come.
After the interview, I decided since I was already in the South Bay that I'd say hi to my parents and have a real meal for once, even if it was leftovers night at the house. I raided their food cabinet, swung home, and it was off to the Casbah. I try to catch Prize Country whenever they come to town. They definitely satisfy my need for face melting, and they usually bring along a band or two and play with Hostile Combover, so there was no missing this show for me.
