Photos: Old Sea Brigade, Frances Cone, Tall Heights at House of Blues Voodoo Room, 11.4.2018

I generally post my photos with the headliner at the top, but on December 4th, I went to the House of Blues Voodoo Room as a guest of Old Sea Brigade, who was opening the show. I decided to stick around for Frances Cone and Tall Heights, and it ended up being an all-around great show. It had also been awhile since I'd been to the Voodoo Room and I totally appreciated the stage renovations. The crowd was small so the fact there wasn't a photo barrier wasn't a problem. There was a group of people up front who seemed more concerned with what flavored vodka was available at the bar than the show, but once they settled down, the rest of the show was pretty awesome.

Full pics from the show are after the jump. I also shot a couple videos of Old Sea Brigade that are after the jump as well.

Photos: Black Rebel Motorcycle Club at House of Blues, January 15, 2018

The first time I remember seeing Black Rebel Motorcycle Club was at a free daytime festival held in downtown several years ago. Let's just say it is much easier to shoot them in daylight. I know the lighting director is supposed to help keep a certain mystique about the band but the first three songs were often a "spray and pray" situation...I focus on the microphones then rapid fire, hoping something works. The band was awesome as always and delivered a solid two hour set. I was exhausted after a marathon weekend and a long daytime hike at the beach, but Black Rebel Motorcycle Club is at the top of their game and should not be missed. I took about a zillion photos, some of them are below and after the jump.

I'm posting this because it's pretty unusual for a such a big venue change for any show, but to go from House of blues to Open Air Theatre is a huge leap... if you have tickets to the original show, you should exchange them sooner rather than later to get the best seats being traded.

Interview & Photos: Dashboard Confessional at House of Blues (2.3.2017)

Let's start off with the big announcement...Chris Carrabba of Dashboard Confessional will be playing a solo set tonight at the Che Cafe. This is a Casbah presented show and tickets are on sale as of now until sell out. ($15 + service charge, will call only. No ticket transfers allowed.)

I keep mentioning my interview with Chris. The interview and performance will be edited down to about two minutes when it officially airs on NBC SoundDiego in the upcoming weeks, but I loved everything about this interview. I loved that Chris was totally open and we did it in the band's dressing room before the show. I loved that he expressed that he was nervous but then became more forgiving when I said I was nervous, too, that I hadn't done an interview in months. He said we could do a whole run-through and if we didn't like it we could do it all over again in a second take.

Hot Off The Presses: San Diego Music Awards To Return 3/21/2017

Leave it to Kevin to send a press release at 11pm on a Tuesday night...

REFORMED SAN DIEGO MUSIC AWARDS
SET TO RETURN ON MARCH 21, 2017

SDS Events is proud to announce the return of the San Diego Music Awards, the annual awards gala that recognizes the diverse achievements of the talented San Diego music community. The 26th version of San Diego's premier local music event is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, March 21, 2017. As in the past, a portion of the proceeds from the event will continue to benefit the San Diego Music Foundation, in partnership with the Taylor Guitars for Schools program.

The event has been reorganized. "After 25 years, it was time for change. I was asked to step in to once again produce the event," said awards show founder Kevin Hellman, who had retired after the 2015 event. "I'm pretty excited to once again have the opportunity to continue what we started 25 years ago. It's already been alot of fun putting the team back together. We are planning to once again produce a great event, one which will make a difference in our community."

The 2017 San Diego Music Awards will be held at House of Blues, located at 1055 Fifth Ave, in downtown San Diego - a new location for the event. The new venue will allow for both VIP seating, reserved seating and also general admission tickets. In additional to the new venue, a major change for 2017 will be a brand new award trophy. Hellman adds, "With the new venue, it's a new era for the event. It just seems to be the right time to create and present a brand new San Diego Music Award."

Over the past 25 years, awards have been presented to San Diego artists including Jason Mraz, Jewel, P.O.D., blink-182, Slightly Stoopid, Switchfoot, Pierce the Veil and countless others. And while the event has and will always focus on homegrown music, the main goal of the event is to keep music education alive in public schools in San Diego County. As such, proceeds from the San Diego Music Awards will once again be used to purchase and place "Baby Taylor" guitars into elementary, middle and high schools in San Diego County, via the non-profit San Diego Music Foundation, in partnership with El Cajon's Taylor Guitars. To date, over 75 schools have participated in the Taylor Guitars for Schools program.

Additional event details will be announced on Sunday, January 15, 2017, including performers, nominees, Lifetime Achievement Award recipient, plus several affiliated events. Event tickets will go on sale on Monday, January 16, 2017 at 3pm, via the official event website, sandiegomusicawards.com.

Photos: The Struts @ House of Blues (3.30.2016)

The Struts returned to the House of Blues last week, and as expected, gave another high energy rock show. The energy throughout the sold out venue was unstoppable, and the crowd ate up everything the band was willing to give, especially since first US tour kicked off in the same spot just last year, noted several times throughout the set. Out of habit for all the social media accounts to which I have to post, I kept my camera solely trained on frontman Luke Spiller, but that isn't to say the whole band doesn't deserve props for maintaining high energy throughout the whole show. I shot a ton and you can see some of the photos after the jump.

Things To Do In San Diego: Wednesday, April 29-Thursday, April 30, 2015

It has been quite a week already. I guess being a sack of potatoes on Saturday was the rest I needed to get all caught up and on top of my stuff this week. It's nice and cool at night so we're able to do fun afternoon and evening stuff like Dog Park with Ficus and a pool party with some of Nova's classmates on their early dismissal day. Plus we're party planning and I'll be working a ton this weekend, so it is a relief to have control of my inbox even if I respond to at least a few emails a day with AYFKM?! (in my head, of course). Things are good. I'm not sure if I've shared the new love of our lives outside of Facebook, so here's our big baby.

Wednesday and Thursday archives are after the jump.

Show Preview: Lissie at the House of Blues Wednesday December 11, 2013

Elisabeth Maurus is known in music circles simply as Lissie, the singer songwriter born and raised in the Midwest. She knew at an early age that music was the clear choice for her moving forward in life. Catching a break as a chosen tour opener for Lenny Kravitz in 2008 led to recording her first full length album, Catching a Tiger (Columbia Records). Favorable reviews and touring in support of the album, mostly in Europe, helped Lissie build her fan base. In fact, she was featured on four songs from the most recent Snow Patrol album. Currently residing in the peaceful community of Ojai has helped maintain her small town roots. Lissie's sophomore full length, Back to Forever, was recently released to coincide with a late autumn tour. The album really highlights her vocal strength, while also showing her ability to play a guitar as well. Drawing on the past while looking to the future makes this a much more accessible album. This is a talented indie pop singer, maturing as a person as well as in her music.

The aforementioned tour stops here in San Diego at the House of Blues on Wednesday December 11. Be sure to arrive early for Nashville's Kopecky Family Band. This is an all ages show, tickets can be purchased here.

On The Horizon: Judith Hill @ House of Blues Saturday November 30, 2013

Judith Hill
The name Judith Hill should be a familiar one to those who watch realty television show The Voice. Judith fared well during last year's competition, and has embarked on the latest chapter in her career, that of a touring musician. The biggest difference is that this time she will not be in the role of a backup singer, but rather will be the lead. Currently touring with Josh Groban, Judith has a headlining show downtown at the House of Blues (intimate 5th Ave side stage) on Saturday November 30.

In 2009 Miss Hill was chosen to be none other than Michael Jackson's duet partner for This Is It. His untimely death resulted in the cancellation of the tour, while Judith sang at the memorial service. The documentary 20 Feet From Stardom features a long list of performers including Judith. Her powerful voice is rooted in soul, r&b and pop, while the training and experience as a back up singer has readied her for the limelight.

Tickets to see Judith Hill at the House of Blues on November 30 can be purchased here. This is an all ages show.

Show Preview: Atlas Genius @ House of Blues Sunday November 4, 2013

Australian indie rock band Atlas Genius are no strangers to San Diego. It wasn't too long ago when the group led by the Jeffery brothers played a 91X Next Big Thing show at The Griffin. Even before the release last spring of their debut full length When It Was Now, the band toured extensively across North America and beyond. This Sunday marks Atlas Genius' biggest show to date here at the House of Blues. Currently the band is comprised of Keith Jeffery (guitar, vocals), brother Michael (drums), Darren Sell (keyboards) and a touring bass player. When describing their sound, Atlas Genius draws on some of the familiar styles such as synth, electronica, and exploding guitars mixed with emotive vocals. The key is the ability to take all these ingredients and create a signature sound of their own. With songs such as Trojans, If So, and Through the Glass it becomes readily apparent why Warner bros. signed the band prior to any official release. Atlas Genius are able to take contemporary sounds and make them stylish.

House of Blues Entertainment is presenting the Ones To Watch Tour featuring Atlas Genius, Family of the Year, and Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. this Sunday November 3rd at the San Diego downtown location. This is an all ages show with 7 pm doors. Tickets can be purchased here.

Cure the Monday blues with Memphis blues rockers Dirty Streets at Soda Bar. The group just released their third full length Blades of Grass...

Tuesday brings the return of indie duo The Blow to the Casbah. It has been seven years since their last record, but the new eponymous album should satisfy fans new and old alike...

Speaking of the Casbah, the cool folks there have a great double header on Wednesday...the early show brings Argentine singer Federico Aubele and L.A.'s Haunted Summer (great band name for this time of year). Dax Riggs and The Palace Ballroom play the regularly scheduled late night slot...

Show Preview: Travis, Rathborne @ House of Blues Sunday October 6, 2013

Travis
It has been five years since Scottish alternative rockers Travis released their last record. Solo projects have kept lead singer Fran Healy busy during this time, so it is great to welcome the band back (so to speak) with their seventh studio album, Where You Stand, released in August. Bands take career breaks for many reasons, but this one seems to have worked well for Travis. Being together for over twenty years certainly has its fair shares of highs and lows, so the new album is really a reflection on the past with a firm grasp on the future direction of the group. No doubt this will be the focal point of their live show, with songs from previous albums added to the set. The last time I saw Travis perform, they entered the room to the triumphant music of Rocky. Fittingly, this is a band that has endured its inner battles, yet seems to be fresh and ready for the next chapter in their career. This promises to be one great night of music for fans of this great band.

Luke Rathborne, a New York based musician, will be opening the show. His preview can be found here.

Tickets for Travis with special guest Rathborne this Sunday at the House of Blues can be purchased here.
Note: this is a 21+ event.

Allah-Las roll into the Casbah for the show of the night on Tuesday...Jacco Gardner and Barbarian set the stage...

On Wednesday Icelandic pop artist Olafur Arnaulds plays his first San Diego show at The Loft at UCSD...Alynda Lee Segarra, aka Hurray for the Riff Raff, brings her folk band to Soda Bar...
