CoViD-19: Support National Independent Venue Association Fight To #SaveOurStages

The empty Casbah stage with a sold out room. This is from the Nada Surf show in January

You may or may not know that I'm responsible for the content of the Casbah's weekly newsletters. This week, I was tasked with taking a little bit of the Belly Up's newsletter and a little bit of Joe Rinaldi's Music Box newsletter to create the Casbah's newsletter. Please take action to contact your representatives. It's preformatted and easy to do. Click here to take action:

SUPPORT INDEPENDENT VENUES.

If you love live music and have wanted to help your favorite small venues, NOW is the time YOU can help in a major way!

Casbah joined the National Independent Venue Association (NIVA) when it formed in response to the COVID-19 crisis.  NIVA has linked 1,200 independent venues and promoters across the country, and has joined their voices at the level necessary to get the attention of our congressional leaders.

This organization has a step that asks you, our fans, to use the link below to send an email to your congressional leaders to remind them that it is not only the venues and artists, but the fans they serve that require congress to support the venues put at risk by this crisis.

This email process is very quick to complete, and allows you to tell your representatives that Casbah, Soda Bar, Bar Pink, Music Box, Belly Up,  and every other small venue in town need to have every possible chance to reopen on steady footing at the end of the COVID-19 crisis.

It’s going to require that we show a substantial amount of support and initiative to explain to members of congress (who may not actively participate in live music) that our industry will require special attention, as one of the most challenged sectors of the San Diego economy, in order to survive and continue to be an asset to the community after the crisis.  We sincerely think you are our best advocates.

Thank you for everything, and just know that we can’t wait to reopen and host your favorite bands in our rooms.

We've been told that we only have until Wednesday to gather support, so please click and join our fight.

Birch Aquarium Announces 2019 Green Flash Season Lineup

Earlier this week, Birch Aquarium announced their summer Green Flash concert lineup. I haven't been to a show there in a few years, but it is undoubtedly one of the most stunning places to see a show. They set up a stage literally on top of the outdoor tipepools as the crowd filters around the space overlooking the Pacific. Pro tip: the parking is not super close, so save your heels for a special occasion and dress like you'll be standing outside at a concert for at least a couple hours, plus hiking up or downhill, depending on how early you arrive. This year's lineup includes Tommy Castro and the Painkillers, Wild Child, Pine Mountain Logs & Venice, The Mother Hips, and Venice. The full press release and ticket details are after the jump.

My Favorite Shows of 2016 in Photos

I can't really muster a reflective post on the year. I feel like if you thought 2016 was bad, just hold on for 2017. I can't even. What I can do is remind you that we are an amazing city for music. I have the privilege of seeing hundreds of bands every year (though admittedly, I probably went to about half as many shows this year than last), and because of my various jobs, this year I was a lot better at having my camera in tow. I thought I'd share some of my favorite shows of this year, with honorable mention to Kero Kero Bonito, where some mixup left me without a photo pass, and Rocky Votolato, whom I've shot more times than I can count and left my camera at home so I could just enjoy the 10 year anniversary of Makers. The following are in no particular order.

Blind Pilot at the Belly Up, 10.28.16

Car Seat Headrest at Casbah 1.18.2016 (and again in Nov at the Irenic)
Frightened Rabbit at Belly Up, 5.21.16

Glen Hansard at The Observatory, 9.28.16

Joshua James at Moniker Warehouse, 8.17.16

Lucius at Belly Up, 11.19.16

Lucy Dacus at Casbah, 8.12.16

Silversun Pickups at The Observatory, 4.19.16

Bad Religion at Ye Scallywag at Waterfront Park, 10.22.16

Hey Marseilles at Soda Bar, 3.26.16

Photos: Charles Bradley @ The Observatory, 5.12.2016

Thursday night was magical, as Charles Bradley returned to San Diego with a show at the Observatory. It was bittersweet for me, because I had the worst merch night of my life with his tour manager back in 2011 when he played the Casbah. Man, that guy was such a prick and he get the privilege of being the only tour manager who has ever made me cry. Anyway, 5 years have passed and whether he has the same tm or not, I had no interaction, so it was nice to just be at the show and soak in all the greatness that Charles Bradley brought to the room. The crowd was fully captivated by his set, even during his wardrobe changes. It was an honor that he chose San Diego to kick off the tour and it was definitely a show that people will be talking about for some time. More photos after the jump.

Upcoming Casbah and Casbah Presents Shows (Update 4.13.2016)

My last update of upcoming Casbah and Casbah Presents shows was at the beginning of the month and I swear, I'm just amazed sometime just how quickly things get booked and added. There are too many for me to point out, but some personal highlights for me include Broncho, Rhett Miller, Kurt Vile, The Joy Formidable, and M Ward.  Of course, those are all down the road...tonight I can't wait for Chvrches, and then the next two weeks are kind of insane. I've been a little run down, but hoping I can rally and get back on the scene. Shows after the weekend are after the jump.

Wed Apr 13 - Spencer Moody of Murder City Devils, Iska Dhaaf @ Casbah

Wed Apr 13 - Lord Huron @ Belly Up (SOLD OUT)

Wed Apr 13 - CHVRCHES, Alvvays @ The Observatory North Park (SOLD OUT)

Photos: Ty Segall at the Belly Up, 1.13.2016

I was working last night and decided I needed to post more pictures. I might as well since I bother carrying my heavy camera around with me on the daily, just need to get over photographer insecurity, I guess. So here are some pictures of Ty Segall from the Belly Up a couple weeks back. The show was sold out, I was only familiar with him in as much as Sirius XMU worships him, and I was shooting from the seated area over by the smaller side bar instead of trying to be up front. It was a fun night, but it went a little later than expected, so I only made it to the Casbah in time for 2 songs from the Bowie memorial show. Shout out to Rachel Frank of ListenSD.com, who was up front with her panda costume for the majority of the show until she was kicked out for crowd surfing, but was in good spirits about it. A small selection of photos are after the jump.

Since I've just been up all night working, I'm going to go ahead and publish this one now. February shows and beyond are after the jump. If you get the Casbah newsletter, you saw these last week. If you're not subscribed, make sure you have a Ticketfly account, and add Casbah in your email subscriptions. February shows and beyond are after the jump.

Tonight! Other Lives at the Belly Up

Other Lives are playing at the Belly Up tonight. I love these guys and I have been waiting for a long time for their return. I know this week is crazy good for music but tonight with Other Lives and Sunday with Givers are easily my picks of the week.

Check out some of these newer videos:

WATCH - "Easy Way Out"
WATCH - "Reconfiguration" video
WATCH - "2 Pyramids" video
WATCH - Other Lives on KCRW's Morning Becomes Eclectic

From the press release:
Other Lives is comprised of Josh Onstott, Jonathon Mooney and Jesse Tabish. Rituals is a pure encapsulation of the band's relentless drive for precision. The trio relocated to Portland, Oregon from their hometown of Stillwater, Oklahoma to record the album. Tabish says the relocation had a direct influence that can be heard through Rituals.

"There was a spirit of change," Tabish offers. "We had done [2011's second LP] Tamer Animals, which was very close to us and about our home. So the next record was about the spontaneity of travel and being isolated. For the first times in our lives we were moving off on our own away from our families and kind of coming into our own. I wanted the songs to reflect that new spirit."

"This one was a real journey," Tabish says of the 18 months spent writing more than 60 songs for Rituals, a constant creative outlet for the relentless sonic architect amid a rigorous few years of touring their debut album. "It was a long time spent searching for a new identity," the soft-spoken singer continues of the writing process, "still trying to retain the past of our musical palate but also really trying to stretch ourselves into a new type of music." The album was produced by Mooney, Tabish and Joey Waronker (Eels, Atoms for Peace, Beck, etc.).

While Rituals marks a new chapter in Other Lives' story, it's also a continuation of a decade-plus passage. "I feel really lucky to be able to have a band and people around me that have been so supportive and we've stuck together all these years and still don't hate each other," Tabish says. "All three of us are like brothers. I don't think that will ever go away. I loved those kids then and I love them now. There's that mutual feeling. If I want to go have a beer with anyone it would be those two guys. That kind of says something."

Here's some videos I shot of the band in Vegas during their residency at The Cosmopolitan in 2011.

The Rolling Stones at The Belly Up, May 27, 2015

Rumors and speculation started about a week before The Rollings Stones big show at Petco Park on Sunday. Where are they staying? (supposedly the Grand Del Mar) Will they do any warm up shows? (Wednesday at the Fonda in LA, a 1200 person venue-same size as The Observatory North Park- of which 300-400 went on sale to the public the day of show for $5 + $5 service charge, which was refunded at the door) Will they do any secret shows in San Diego? The answer to this one, as we all now know, was yes.

Last night, The Rolling Stones played a private party at The Belly Up. According to CBS8, the party was paid for by Ralph Whitworth. Whitworth is the founder of Relational Investors, LLC, and has served on many boards of publicly traded companies, including serving as interim president for Hewlett-Packard (wiki).

It was fun to watch the news coverage (Fox 5, SoundDiego) and my Facebook wall throughout the day, chatting with Meryl all the while as she (and every other Belly Up employee) was bombarded with calls and texts from long lost friends. There were people pretending to be there who weren't, and the people who were kept mum until the whole affair was over and Mick and the band pulled off in their black towncars.

Of all the people that were there trying to get in, I was so ecstatic that the most deserving person of all, Tim Mays, was invited to attend. Tim gave me permission to share his Facebook post.
So I got to see the Rolling Stones at the Belly Up last night! Anyone who knows me well knows that I'm a diehard, longtime Stones fan and this was a once in a lifetime opportunity to see them in a small venue. I was on standby all day and finally got a text about 8:15 which said "start heading north". I was on the road immediately and parked way down the block on Cedros and walked up to the club. It was a carnival atmosphere out front with people milling about in hopes of getting in, minstrels with acoustic guitars walking around singing Stones' songs, and every radio station in town parked on the street. I got to the door just as they were closing it and got in the club about 9pm.

The only people I knew there were folks from the Belly Up and Josh Rubinstein from DMTC (ed: Del Mar Thoroughbred Club
Did I mention that it was an open bar??? Don Julio 1942 all around...
Anyway, this was one of the best shows I've ever seen - they played all the hits and a few curiosities - I Got The Blues was amazing. Mick strapped on a guitar for When the Whip Comes Down, which I had only seen them play once before, on the 1978 Some Girls tour. Paint It Black was very dark and menacing and Midnight Rambler was downright evil. Start Me Up, It's Only Rock'n'Roll, Brown Sugar, Sympathy for the Devil, Crazy Mama, Satisfaction, Honky Tonk Women, Miss You, Jumping Jack Flash - all the hits.
I jumped up and down like a kid at times and sang every word for every song and had tears of joy running down my cheeks. It was truly an amazing night of music.
You can also hear Meryl talk about the show with Chris Cantore here.

No doubt this was an incredible experience for everyone who was able to be a part of it all.
