Mumford & Sons at The Troubadour, 2.9.10

Yesterday I went on a little LA roadtrip up to LA with some friends to catch Mumford & Sons at the Troubadour. I first heard them while driving with a friend who had procured a leak of the record and from the first song, I was sold, demanding to know who it was and everything about them. They were only playing 4 US dates before a tour in Europe but they're getting all kinds of buzz, yadda yadda, and they just got added to Bonnaroo. The four and a half hour drive was long but entertaining, as Rich and Josh shared hilarious tour stories, then we got some grub before making it to the show to enjoy Family of The Year and Mumford & Sons.

It was my first time ever at The Troubadour and I loved it and felt right at home. I managed to get up front for the show. I missed a couple of the early songs, but here's my footage from the night. Enjoy.



The band said they'll be back in June, so hopefully they'll announce a full fledged tour and we can get them to come to San Diego.

Whisper House Revisited

On Wednesday night, I was out at Bar Pink catching Joe Jack Talcum of the Dead Milkmen, and I bumped into some friends who had gone to see Whisper House based on the review I wrote about the show. This pleased me to no end, because it's nice to know people actually read and take to heart some of my suggestions, but even more than that, they loved the show as much as I did. I had already made plans to see the show again the next night, but based on their thoughts, I was excited to see how the show had changed from when I saw it. I knew there were some re-writes and changes in the story, and that the original Christopher was no longer in the show, so I was interested to see if it would hold up.

I don't really ever read The Reader outside of Blurt, but while flipping through, I read their scathing review of the show and I questioned my own opinion, as if maybe I'm just not theatre-savvy enough to be appropriately critical. After seeing the show a second time, call me easy, but I loved the show even more, and frankly will just continue to ignore The Reader's reviews on just about everything, because how they see the world is clearly different than the way I see it.

This time around I took my mom. She's the kind of person who loves specific shows...Hair, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, and we even dropped $95 a ticket to see Sebastian Bach as the lead in Jesus Christ Superstar a few years back. As a kid she used to take us to pretty much anything Bill Virchis was involved with around San Diego and sometimes to local high school productions, too, but bigger shows were out of our budget. I'll also say about my mom that after I kept programming it into their car stereo, KPRi is her favorite radio station, though she still has no idea who Duncan Sheik is, but she's pretty open minded when it comes to music.



I didn't want to influence my mom with the show, so I didn't tell her anything about it except that I saw the show and thought she'd like it. And she did. She loved it, actually. She thought the music was great, the story fit. She read the program before the show and she really connected the parallels with wartime fear-mongering done during WWII and the U.S. response post-9/11.

It isn't a complicated story, and any holes that might've existed have been filled. I suspect that if you're a right-wing conservative, you'll have a visceral reaction to this show and it's probably not for you. Ditto if you're not into contemporary rock music. I consider the music quite mellow, but at times the seniors around me looked like they were watching Black Sabbath or something. After the show, an elderly woman turned to her husband and said, "You couldn't pay me enough money in the world to see this play again." And that's fine. I can see how this show wasn't for her. On the other hand, as my 59 year old mom said, "sometimes old farts just can't be pleased." As I said last time, if you're looking for a traditional musical, this is not it. I've heard that one of the biggest complaints is that there's no dancing and that the actors don't sing. For that I am grateful. I prefer the singing be left to the ghosts.

The show has two more weeks before it ends on February 21 and I would encourage you to check it out. I know it's not cheap, but there are several outlets for discounted tickets that you can try:

20under30: The Old Globe has a program for people under 30 to buy tickets for $20. Only the purchaser has to be under 30, and your ID will be checked at the show, but this is a bargain worth investigating.

Tonight: Langhorne Slim, April Smith & The Great Picture Show at Casbah

I'm really looking forward to tonight...not only is Langhorne Slim returning to the Casbah (sadly without my buddy Paul on bass), but he's also doing an in-store at M-Theory before the show, and anyone who has ever been to an in-store knows they're always really special. I'm pretty sure I've seen Langhorne Slim every time he's been to San Diego and with the new record out and a bigger band, tonight should be quite excellent.

The album is a departure from their guitar driven previous efforts, featuring synthesizers this time. The songs tend to grow with repeated listens. The constant that remains is Tom Smith’s signature lead vocals, so there is no mistaking this is indeed an Editors’ album.
Any time a band attempts to expand their sound there is a risk of losing some of the fan base. Recent touring in Europe has provided favorable reviews from concert-goers, thought it might be somewhat more difficult to gain the same support on this side of the Atlantic. The band seems poised to take on the challenge. Editors live show is definitely worth the time and money.

I spent the evening at the Laura Marling show at the Casbah, and while those videos upload, I wanted everyone to see the awesome that they missed at Bar Pink. Joe Jack Talcum of the Dead Milkmen played a FREE acoustic show at Bar Pink, and fortunately I walked in during Punk Rock Girl, and Mike convinced him to play it again at the end of his set. Pyles Session: The Screamin Yeehaws

Last week I tagged along with Tim Pyles as he recorded a Pyles Session with The Screamin Yeehaws at Doubletime Studios in El Cajon. The Session, which will be mixed and played on The Local Pyle on February 21, was recorded to promote the FM 94/9 FREE end of the month show at the Casbah with The Screamin Yeehaws, The Fooks, Behind The Wagon, and The Farmers, which doubles as The Screamin Yeehaws CD Release Party. I took a bunch of pictures and want to thank Pyles for letting me be a part of it, The Screamin Yeehaws for letting me catch you in the studio (especially Silent Henry for drawing my name into your tattoo- we'll get the spelling right next time), and to Jeff for letting us watch the recording magic happen. I didn't shoot much video since the whole thing was being recorded, but we had a little crisis when the video lights blew a fuse...when they flipped the breaker, it was the wrong one and all the recording equipment went off. Fortunately everything was backed up, but this is what went down while we waited to make sure everything was ok.

The Rumble Returns (To A New Venue)

The Rumble is back after taking a month off for the holidays, and as usual, the crew has put together quite a lineup. The most important thing to know is that the San Diego Rumble is now going to be at Bar Pink. That's the only thing that has changed, however, and you can still count on $3 Trumer Pils beer specials (and an hour of free tastings), the show is still FREE, and you're still gonna get a stellar show that will rock your socks off. The show is THIS SATURDAY, February 6.

SPIDER FEVER is a project formed by Earthless drummer-Mario Rubalcaba (who will also be DJing) and he describes them as having “a ‘punk-n-roll’ feel.” They feature Rubalcaba on vocals and guitar, backed by The Heartaches’ Dean Reis and Billy Baggins and Cody Young from The Widows. We can’t wait for this set!

If you haven’t seen THE DABBERS yet, you must. They are a two piece comprised of Shelby Gubba (ex-BRAAIINS!) and Zack Wentz (Kill Me Tomorrow, Tender Buttons). They just released their debut album, And I Was Like, And They Were All…, on their own label, Rax Records. Congrats!

And lastly, JAGUAR LOVE will be joining us from Portland– formed by members of Blood Brothers and Pretty Girls Make Graves. If the rumors are true, their live set is ridiculous.

So I've told you that I'm helping out with the new Casbah website and it's slow coming, but the old site is still up and last night while I was working through their calendar, I noticed several shows that I'm REALLY excited about and thought I'd draw your attention to them because you don't want to be one of those "oh, no, the show sold out" people crying in your juicebox the night of the shows. The Mikey Show Debuts on FM 94/9

I've expressed some opinions about Mikey's show moving from Rock 105.3 to FM 94/9, so I don't need to go into the debate any further. What I really want to say is that today is the debut (in about a minute) and if you're going to have an opinion about the show, you should at least LISTEN. I never really listen to morning radio anyway, unless, as right now, I've been up all night working (we WILL launch that new Casbah site SOON), but here's the thing...I hope Mikey kills it. I really do. If the powers at FM 94/9 are putting their money behind him and his team and that is the way they think they'll get their numbers where they want them to keep the station on the air in the format that we currently know and love in every other daypart, then I hope people tune in.

I am right now. Maybe not long...as I said I've been up all night...but for now, I'm listening. You can too. Right here. Feel free to comment here on what you think.

Judgement Day Reveal New Video for "Cobra Strike"

I am a huge fan of Judgement Day. I met them back when they were touring with Margot and The Nuclear So and So's and David Vandervelde and though they've returned to San Diego, playing the House of Blues a couple times since that night in October of 2008, I wasn't able to catch them. That's why I am SUPER excited to say that they're playing in San Diego in March, and they've asked me to put the show together. I'll reveal the full lineup soon, but mark your calendars for March 13 at Soda Bar as they swing through town on their way to SXSW.

They just released a video for their track, "Cobra Strike", that will appear on their new record, Peacocks/Pink Monsters, that's dropping April 13, that takes the idea of "Guitar Hero" and takes it to a whole new level. You can read all about the making of the video here.
