I tried to be a little more thoughtful as I received this year's Comic-Con emails because there were a lot. But then as I was trying to put stuff into my listings, it just made sense to do a separate post for activations. And then I ended up working on Wednesday night, completely missing preview night at the convention center and the chance to preview a bunch of the activations, too, but since I've been doing some late night non-bar excursions a lot lately, I decided to walk around the whole Comic-Con area to explore. I parked on 4th near the Horton Grand Hotel, walked to the Harbor Club and up MLK Promenade, then hooked a right on 1st to see the Twisted Metal activation. I worked my way back to Harbor Drive and crossed at 1st to get to the Bay Access path between the Marriott and the Convention Center. Then I cruised all the way down to the Shell, along the bay to the Hilton Bayfront, then up to the third floor of the garage to cross the pedestrian bridge to Petco Park. I walked the rest of the MLK Promenade then did a big loop around 5th and 6th Avenues until I made it back to my car. There's a lot to see, but there will also be a lot of lines to wait in. I would say don't bother with The Lodge unless you have a reservation because FUCK Paramount and all that. Twisted Metal will be bonkers, too, so make sure you're willing to sign a waiver for yourself or your kids before you get in line. There is a really cool pop-up for Abbott Elementary at 5th Avenue Landing, next to Joe's Crab Shack where there is a full carnival sized Ferris Wheel, Adult Swim always brings a fun activation, and Hulu's King of The Hill seems to have followed their lead. I hope you find some fun, no matter where your walking takes you. These activations will be duplicated on my Comic-Con tab. Scroll to the bottom to see a selection of my phone photos from my journey.

Photos: More Comic-Con Fun
Gonna keep it super short because I'm still at home and have so much still to explore, but my day 2 of Comic-Con started really late. Like, really, really late, because you know, some of us still have work to do and stuff. Darren and I aimed at stopping at Salud before Con, but it was, as expected, packed, so instead we went to Border X Brewing and stumbled upon an event for Latina Geeks while we ate tacos. We kept it brief and he dropped me at the Hilton where I went to the FX Fearless Forum preview night. It was a small crowd, so we took advantage of the hosted bar and the walk-through experience which meant we skipped a whole slew of other things. But it was fine, Pyles went on his way after and I just cruised the activations which were mostly closed before deciding to still try to get in to the Rave of Thrones, despite being 2 hours late for the meetup time.
The security at Omnia were super cool to me and despite their 'no bag' rule, ushered me in a back entrance where I was behind the DJ booth as Kristian "Hodor" Nairn was music selector. That was fun and exciting but I only lasted about an hour before I made my way to the Ken Club for their anniversary/ska night.
Tonight, I'll wander until I have to work at Balboa Theatre then who knows where the night might take me? Tons of photos after the jump.

Notes from Comic-Con Preview Night
I was just reading a listicle from Pacific-- Top 10 cheap eats at Comic-Con this week-- and not only did it make me hungry, but it made me realize I forgot a couple things on my Comic-Con page this year, namely, my little map of downtown with some of my personal favorite spots (which I just quickly updated so I can get back downtown.)
Preview wrap up after the jump.

Things To Do In San Diego: Monday, July 17-Tuesday, July 19, 2017
I have to say, I have spent a dozen hours putting this weeks listings together so I hope everyone finds them useful. It was a pretty great weekend with the Thorn Rock The Pale release at Casbah on Friday and a chill show at the Observatory with Joshua Radin, Rachael Yamagata, and Brandon Jenner. Sunday we grilled out, caught GoT on the East Coast feed, and while Darren worked, I hit the Bar Pink 10 Year Anniversary. This week is going to be BONKERS so I'm bracing myself. Monday and Tuesday archives are after the jump.

Things To Do In San Diego: July 13-15, 2012
It's Friday night and I'm sitting in the Movies On Demand lounge before all the madness kicks off tonight. I'm gonna go find some food, because after last night's bender, it was a critical error not to lay a solid base. It has been a great day so far. Pyles and I hung out at the Wired Cafe for a while, ran through The Walking Dead Escape, hung out with Ders and Adam at the Workaholics happy hour, and went back to the Wired Cafe for last call of the daytime party. There are a ton of free parties and events related to Comic-Con tonight, but there's also really great shows all over town. Call Taxi Rob and have a great night! (The only update to tonight's list is Jesse LaMonaca at Urban Bar & Grill. Drop by and give him a hug. He give the best hugs ever.) Archives are after the jump.

Comic-Con 2012: The Walking Dead Escape- Live The Apocalypse
Comic-Con International 2012 is just around the corner and every year seems to top the previous with large-scale events. This year is no exception as Petco Park turns into a live zombie apocalypse. You don't have to have a Comic-Con badge, but you do have to buy a ticket which will be $75 for "Survivors" who actually run the course or $15 for spectators who just want to watch the action as it plays out. I've heard that tickets for Thursday are going fast (if not sold out already), so you can expect this to be the talk of the Con. For more information and to buy tickets, CLICK HERE.
This is a separate event from the San Diego Zombie Walk which will take place on Friday, July 13 and is open to everyone who wants to participate. As usual, zombies will meet at 4th & Broadway between 5 and 5:20pm to begin their downtown takeover.

True Blood Fans, Get Ready For Jace Everett!

It feels like a lot of people have been asking me what shows I'm looking forward to. The truth is, I have pretty narrow vision. Posting about Dr. Dog & Frightened Rabbit presales are all fine and dandy, but it only happened because I'm making a more concerted effort to stay on top of my inbox. Sometimes that doesn't happen. Most of the time I have no idea what I'm doing in 3 days, let alone next week or next month.
I will however say that I've been looking forward to the Jace Everett show for some time. If you watch True Blood, you know Jace Everett. He penned the song "Bad Things" that is now the theme song of the show. He'll be at the Casbah on Tuesday, July 20, the day before Comic-Con begins. Tickets are only $10. Shawn Rohlf & The 7th Day Buskers and Matt Haeck open. I'm especially excited to see Matt since he relocated to Nashvile and is only back in SD for about a week.
I invite any fangbangers, furbangers, fans, friends, and cast members to make an appearance. Maybe I can talk Ben into modifying the cranhammer into a True Blood like beverage. Hm. I'll work on that. See you all Tuesday.

Comic-Con Preview Night
Yesterday I braved the madness that is Comic-Con. This year's passes sold out months ago and even so knowing, you never really realize what kind of crowd to expect. I had planned on going downtown early, but I was actually pleased in arriving at 4 with plenty of time before the preview doors opened. The line for pre-registered professionals and media was long but the bonus about geek culture is that they're REALLY efficient and in about 15 minutes I had my badge. Then I wondered, what do I do now??
Naturally I found a spot on the floor and opened up my laptop to take advantage of the Google sponsored free wi-fi. That was fine until the Elite security started clearing the floor area, so I moved upstairs to wait in line with Jim. He told me there were three main lines and we were at the front of one of them. I still don't understand the lines to be honest, but I guess there are certain booths with exclusive collectibles and giveaways.

People were in such a frenzy, it was hard not to get caught up in it. I'd see a line or a mass of people and 3 minutes later I'm the owner of a District 9 t-shirt or a Twilight bottle opener. Or a ginormous Harry Potter bag. I even stopped at a booth and got my picture taken to look like I was caught on fire. I imagine the reusable grocery sized bag from TheBloodFactory.com is gonna get some looks next time I'm at Trader Joes.

But then what? I'm not in the market for Star Wars figurines, I haven't played a video game since Super Mario Bros., there aren't really any shows that I'm obsessed with that would make me fight people to grab some memorabilia, and I've probably watched 5 movies this entire year and none of those is of the action/summer blockbuster/must-see variety. Something compelling still makes me excited to be there.
Maybe the Ugly Dolls?

Or American mockery?

I dunno, but whatever it is, I'm heading back for more.
Incidentally, I only lasted 2 hours before heading to the tweet-up at Voyeur which was fun but probably only about 20% of the 500+ who signed up to attend actually showed up. It was good chatting with a few friends before Jake and I took off to catch Ryan Bingham at Casbah. I'll be posting some Youtube from that later; hopefully tonight.
Naturally I found a spot on the floor and opened up my laptop to take advantage of the Google sponsored free wi-fi. More Tips For Comic-Con
Yesterday I posted my link with tips for Comic-Con that I posted last year, but I keep discovering really great sites with much more Con-specific information.
Check out Speedforce.org for some really great advice, whether you're from San Diego or coming from somewhere else. My only disagreement is on the restaurants because I think you can find some better/cheaper spots but you can check Yelp for that sort of thing.
Is it bad that I'm totally geeking out now?

This Week In San Diego: Thoroughbreds vs. Superheroes
This week is huge for San Diego. There are maybe a handful of annual events that really focus the attention of the rest of the country, let alone the international community, on San Diego. As thousands of people decend upon San Diego, our city will be splattered all over the news as national and international media come to capture Comic-Con International in all of it's glory, naturally highlighting the geek, gaming, movie, and comic culture that make up this exhausting week. In all of that, does Opening Day at Del Mar get lost in the mix, or do the celebs and media in town help?
Honestly, I don't know, but while I would assume that there isn't much overlap between Opening Day revelers and Comic-Con badgeholders, the two events have a lot in common if you think about it: (1)people wait all year for this day/week (2)they like to dress up (hats at DMTC, costumes at Con) (3)both are full of big spenders with huge money to throw down (4)both will likely yield celebrity sightings (however B-List they may be. Audrina, I'm looking at you.) Personally, I'm a racing fan, but not so much Opening Day, so maybe I'll hit a 3 o'clock Friday or the beer festival during racing season, but this week, The Con wins.
As far as The Con, I am still a n00b, having attended The Con for just the past couple years (check out my guide to surviving The Con) and this is my first year going with a Media badge, so as I plan my week, I'm a little bit more nervous and overwhelmed by this year's schedule. Fortunately, there are tons of resources to get me through.
So here are some of the places I've been getting my Con information and where I'll likely be looking for information as the week goes on:
Comic-Con Main Website
SD Examiner
Sign-On San Diego
iheartcomix
And, of course, I rely heavily on Twitter. I follow @SyFy, @XSanguin, @EWPopWatch, @sdcomiccon, @SD_Comic_Con, @machinafatalis and a host of others.
I also use search for info on last minute parties, like #SDCC, Comic-Con Party, and just plain old Comic-con.
And, of course, for tourists in town wondering where to go and what to do in San Diego, I hope you'll come back to http://sddialedin.com and follow me on Twitter @sddialedin as I try and navigate through the week.
