Friday: Third Story at 98 Bottles

Tonight is a really special night for San Diego jazz. Third Story is a band started by three San Diego natives, two of which now live in Brooklyn. They have racked up numerous prestigious awards as individuals, and tonight's CD release show has been getting a lot of attention in jazz circles. It's pretty rare for a band to do 2 sets around here, which speaks to how big a show this is going to be.

Even if you're concept of jazz starts and ends with Miles and Coltrane, I think you might like this show. Guitarists especially should see how Jeff Miles puts effects to use. This guy won the 2008 Montreaux jazz guitar competition and it's thrilling to watch him play.

The shows are at 8 and 10pm tonight at 98 Bottles, a block away from the Casbah. You could catch the first set and still make it to the other shows on Rosey's list.

Jason Robinson Quintet at Dizzy's, 12/18/10

Many of you probably don't go out to see the jazz shows around town. I'm going to try and change that.

Jason Robinson is a fantastic saxophonist, comfortable in all styles from straightahead to bop to crazy free jazz. He was joined by trumpeter Gilbert Castellanos and an all star backing band at Dizzy's last month. (click keep on reading for more)

Joshua White at Dizzy's, 8/26/10

I shoot a lot of jazz shows too, and there was a great one at Dizzy's a couple weeks ago. The Joshua White Quartet, fronted by the 25-year old piano phenom.

This group features Jason Robinson on saxophones and alto flute, Duncan Moore on drums, and Rob Thorsen on bass.

These guys play around town often, so if you see their names pop up in Rosey's listings, try something new and check out some jazz. Gilbert's jam session on Wednesdays at El Camino is a great time to get some dinner and drinks before walking one block over to the Casbah.

Check out my original post for more photos. If you'd like to see more jazz photos posted here or never want to see them again, leave me a comment either way.
