Jesus Christ Superstar, San Diego Civic Theatre, 1/2/08

A Christmas gift I procured for my mom was a pair of tickets to opening night of Jesus Christ Superstar at the Civic Theatre. My mom isn't necessarily a big fan of Broadway, but she's always liked this particular 'rock opera'. It was one of the first things I remember ever seeing onstage, back as a kid we saw a community college performance of the Andrew Lloyd Webber classic. Then a few years ago we caught the show in Las Vegas, with Sebastian Bach playing the lead role of Jesus, before he became a big reality show slut and we were blown away by his performance.

It's probably because of Sebastian Bach that I was pretty disappointed with this San Diego performance. I understand that it's kind of supposed to be a big deal that Ted Neeley, the original Jesus in the film version, was playing the role of Jesus, but 30 years later, maybe he should've made a cameo as God instead. His voice is powerful and his performance strong, but for me, part of the thing about Jesus Christ Superstar is that you're supposed to find Jesus a little bit sexy, especially with all those moments of caressing with Mary Magdalene. In this case, the young prostitute just looks like a prostitute servicing an old man. It was kinda creepy, I have to say, and the actress playing Mary wasn't one of the best I've seen in the role.

For me, the saving grace was Corey Glover as Judas Iscariot. The singer of Grammy winning band Living Colour, his voice was just what the role called for. It could be that overall the cast wasn't as great as other ones I've seen, the choreography looked a bit amateur, and the costuming was very predictable. It could also be that I saw the last performance in a beautiful brand new casino quality theatre with a far better sound system than we have at our Civic Theatre with a better stage and more elaborate set. Whatever it was, I liked this performance, but didn't love it. I could only keep thinking how great it would've been to see Sebastian Bach alongside Corey Glover...two great rock voices in a way we never would've imagined them 15 or 20 years ago in the same show. Ted almost won me over with the final crucifixion scene, and the lighting created a very dramatic effect you'd have to see for yourself, but overall for me, the performance fell pretty flat. At least my mom loved it, since that was the point anyway, though I should say, even she thought Jesus looked old.

Barbara Boxer:

• Comments on extraordinary evacuation/services, etc.
• Getting equipment we need; already have the personnel
• Qualcomm is prepared for 30,000 evacuees
• More than 1200 homes are gone
• Senator Feinstein sends her best; Boxer will be back in 10 days
• Coverage is creating comaraderie
• Urging support of Fireman Protection Act: When an uninsured (as is the case for volunteer firefighters) emergency worker or fire fighter fights during a nationally declared emergency, that dept of health will follow them through the local government to guarantee they get proper health coverage.

Susan Davis:

• San Diego has really responded to the need; proud of community
• 53rd District not in way of fire but have become the heart of volunteers and hosts
• Planning for how people pick up their lives after this is all over
• Air support problems are not because of training or cross agency support but because weather hindered flights

David Paulson:

• Keep spirits up
• President signed Emergency Declaration (releases funds to agencies, city and state) and Major Disaster Declaration (releases funds for individuals)

Ron Roberts:

• High temperature, low humidity, high winds are creating "the perfect firestorm"
• Board of Supervisors are eliminating building permit fees for rebuilding homes

San Diego Fires: Lt. Gov John Garamendi

"People moved out early and were were better prepared."

Mandatory evacuations are covered by homeowners policies. That means if you were forced to evacuate, your homeowners has to cover temporary hotel/motel stays if you had to leave on the order of a police or fire agency. Get on the horn and call your homeowners insurance ASAP.

DAC- Disaster Assistance Centers are being set up in San Diego with reps from FEMA, The Red Cross, Insurance Company representatives, etc.

Tips for future fires:
This isn't the end of fire season. Policies should be bought to cover rebuilding. Inventory everything you have as best you can, with video if you can.

The Altar Boyz

It's been a bit rough here in my *very* *important* *the world will fall apart without you* day job, so when I got an e-mail from Andrea about The Altar Boyz, I decided to go check them out because as someone pretty much kicked out of Catholic Church, there is nothing I like mocking more than Christianity. But to my surprise, I'm not the only one making fun of Christianity...

The Altar Boys is a show playing at the Civic Theater March 6-11. The show is "a spoof about a fictitious Christian boy band on the last night of their national 'Raise the Praise' tour." The boys: Matthew, Mark, Luke, Juan, and Abraham sing songs like with lyrics like "Jesus Called Me On My Cellphone" and the back handed "Girl, You Make Me Wanna Wait" which continues "At least until our wedding date...until then, I'll just have to master--... my own fate."

It was actually pretty funny (though very Broadway if you can handle that.)



They arrived on the Amtrak and they even had women with signs to greet them. Here are a couple more shots.







In typical Rosey fashion, I won a pair of tickets to the show on March 7th by answering a trivia question. (What boy band was Justin Timberlake originally a part of? It was such an obvious question, I actually knew they'd ask it.) Anyway, if you're into shows, hit me up.
