Wallpaper Wreak Havoc On San Diego

The latest artist signed by my friends over at Eenie Meanie Records is called Wallpaper, and, well, let's just say you have to see them to get the full effect. They were arrested at Coachella last weekend for busting out pop up concerts in the parking lot. They were also headliners for Filter Magazine's Coachella party.

Wallpaper is performing at U-31 tonight. Get there early because there's gonna be some people doing screenprinting and handing out tons of free swag. I also have it under good authority that after the show, La Posta is the spot to be. I'm jus' sayin what I heard...

Thursday Night: Scissors For Lefty & Juliette and The Licks

I just want to be really clear about something. Thursday night was a great night, but there are four words that I never thought I would post here. I. Drank. Too. Much. My office hosted a party starting at 4 and there was a lot of booze to go around. We did the whole gift exchange thing before I left. Then round two of my night took place at The Undercarriage.

This was the second time The Undercarriage brought in a band. We asked Scissors For Lefty to come to the spa because they're on the same label as Great Northern- Eenie Meanie Records- and because I had a been in touch with the band a little after their Beauty Bar show earlier in the year. What Malinda and Kristin are doing is a really cool thing for bands, especially in this case, after they played the night before in Sacramento. Originally Suffrajett were going to come in, too, but they were all sick and ended up staying in Sacramento. The guys in Scissors for Lefty were all a bit under the weather, too, so Brian, the singer, slept in the van, while the others came in for mini massages.

From the Undercarriage, it was on to the show at the Casbah. If Scissors for Lefty were actually sick, you wouldn't have known it from their performance. I liked the band when I saw them back in Feb, but after this performance, I crazily loved them. They're full on pros, with full command of the stage. Brian also has that dreamy charisma thing going on. When he jumped into the crowd I thought the whole group of girls he was singing to were gonna lose their shit.

By the time their set was finished, I was pretty lit, which resulted in going snap-happy with the camera. Halloran even took a bunch of pics with my camera, but after looking at all the pics, all I can say is that I'm glad they were on my camera and will never see the light of day. Sorry. But I did get to take some pics of Juliette, who seriously brings it when she performs. I was in awe. Anyway, I'll let those pics do the rest of the talking.

The night was brilliant but I was glad that I'd taken Friday off from work, for sure. My overindulgence made me feel really lame the next day, but I got over it. Even the best of us slip every once in a while, I guess.

Wed Recap: Great Northern & Robbers On High Street @ The Casbah

Weekends just aren't long enough, are they?

I've got some major recapping to do, but finding the balance between working, going out, then actually writing about it all has been pretty challenging of late. I'll do my best to do the last 4 nights some justice.

First, there was Wednesday night. Great Northern have been full-on road dogs this year, traversing the country and finding a way to play San Diego at least 4 times. I'd been to three of their four shows (I missed when they opened for LadyTron) and have felt honored that their label, Eenie Meanie Records, reached out to me at let me be a part of presenting their shows.

Recently, you might remember that I was invited by my friend Malinda to get a facial from The Undercarriage. It was such a great treat and we'd been talking about making something happen for a while, so here's what she and her business partner Kirsten came up with: why not offer touring bands a place to relax before a show, get some free services, have some drinks and snacks, and be able to have a little quiet time before a show? This is an offer the ladies would like to extend to other touring bands who come through town, and the way things went on Wednesday, I don't think we'll have any problem finding bands who want to be a part of it. All that is asked in return are some photo and video ops.

It wasn't until the late afternoon that we got final confirmation that the band would be coming by. Around 8 I arrived at the shop and the band was already there. Drinks were poured and we just hung out, while they rotated through the treatment rooms, getting eyebrow waxes, mini facials, and massages. Rachel, Ashley, Solon and Davey were awesome people to just hang with and we chatted about their tour, about CMJ, cities they love, and stations that have helped them (like 94/9). Oh, and they'd seen the YouTube videos I uploaded from the Belly Up show and they love them, so we had a great "Band of Horses are idiots" conversation. It was a relaxing great time. By 10, the band was all refreshed and we all headed to the Casbah.

We missed the opening band, but were there in time to catch Robbers on High Street. I was a little surprised how young the guys are. There are some songs reminiscent of Spoon (especially "The Fatalist") but to me there's also a similarity to Crowded House, one of my all time favorite bands. They played a great set and the crowd seemed to love them right back.

Robbers On High Street Setlist, Casbah, 11-07-07

Great Northern took the stage and once again, sounded great. Before the show I warned them that I would be flash happy and also asked what song I should record, and Rachel was nice enough to cue me when they were going to play a new song that is not on their album. The set was great and the whole vibe of the show was one great party.

That meant even better times after the show as we all hung out with Robbers and GN taking some really silly photos. It was a late night and made Thursday morning a little challenging, but it was so worth it. Because of the way the Casbah is set up sans a real dressing room, bands are completely accessible to fans if they want to be, and if they don't want to be bothered, they usually have to hide in their vans or busses. I've met a lot of really great bands, and really nice bands, but there are few who embrace their fans like the Robbers and Great Nothern do. Big thanks to them, Eenie Meanie, Filter Magazine, Sneak Attack, and The Undercarriage for what was another amazing night in San Diego.

News In The Music Biz

I'm probably gonna spend Thursday with my niece and my sister, so let me post all the news clippings worth reading:

Strange and tragic death of musician Carter Albrecht, member of Edie Brickell and the New Bohemians and Dallas band "Sorta". Other reports here.

Luciano Pavorotti died. Stories here.

Rockabilly queen Janis Martin dies at 67. Stories here.

An LA Times Review of my neighbor, Gregory Page's "Love Made Me Drunk" here.

My boys in Swim Party have changed plans from recording an EP to a full LP, read the details hereand listen to the Black Box track on their MySpace page here.

I feel bad I didn't mention this last week, but Augustana is back in the studio recording their next album. They're temporarily living in LA as they do so and I've been promised rough cuts of their new material as it's available. But read about it here. Jared told me that they have completely reworked some of the songs they had presented earlier. So the song below is not going to sound anything like it does below, and according to Jared, it works. I'm gonna hold him to sending me rough cuts, you can count on it, but in the meantime, here's the old acoustic version of the song.

Augustana, "I'll Meet You There Someday"

And I told you I was listening to new music all day, as I wallowed in my feeling sick, so let me say that some of the CDs I have are great.

Eulogies, as I mentioned, will have their full length out on September 11. They'll be at the Beauty Bar on November 8 with Film School. Listen here.

Sea Wolf had an amazing EP and now the full length is going to be available on September 25. Listen to a sample track here or watch a live session here. Both Eulogies and Sea Wolf are part of the amazing group of bands that Dangerbird has signed on and there's not a band or artist yet that has disappointed me.

Eenie Meenie Records (Great Northern) is proud to have LA band Division Day on their roster. Their full length, Beartrap Island, will be out on October 2. I listened to the CD today and though I'd been "MySpace friends" with the band for some time, there has been definite growth and I look forward to their unleashing unto the world. Check them out on MySpace here.

I received an album by Jesca Hoop, but read about it before I actually listened. We all know I'm partial to male vocals, but if you like women like Imogen Heap or Kate Havnevik crossed with Sinead Lohan, you'll love Jesca's album "Kismet" out on September 18. Take a listen at her MySpace page here.

And last, Eskimo Joe is yet another band from Australia that has won me over in one listen. I guess I'm also partial to the packaging, which not only includes a 12 track CD but a 4 track bonus DVD. The album is Black Fingernails Red Wine available September 25. They were part of the LiveEarth concert and to these ears sound like Rob Thomas singing lead for a modern day INXS. That is meant in the most positive way it can sound to a bunch of indie music snobs, because both references are some of my favorite musicians of the past and stuff that I still listen to now without any irony. Check out some tracks on their MySpace here.

And I guess the biggest news of the day is how Roses On Her Grave lead singer CJ Gladstone disses the San Diego scene in a big way in this week's Blurt. For shame. A dog never shits where he eats. CJ should not either.

Great Northern At The Belly Up, 8/9/07

I'll really get to reviewing this week's shows soon, in the meantime, I've uploaded some songs on YouTube from Thursday's performance by Great Northern at the Belly Up. I captured two more songs, but will have to try to post them on VMix or another host that will accept more than 100 megs. My little camera focuses on its own, so sorry for the blurry moments, but I did the best I can with what I've got. Hopefully you were there to experience the amazing show for yourself.
