Transfer Set To Support Brandon Flowers on European Tour

I've attempted having several blog contributors and every once in awhile I'm impressed with the surprises they have for me. Sometimes I find out band news from reading my own site because Drew Andrews or Steve Poltz or Matt Molarius post some added news that I haven't heard before.

At other times, they run off into their own little world and it's like pulling teeth to get information. Still, I knew some big news was coming for Transfer for a while and earlier this week they finally announced on their Facebook page that they will be heading to Europe to support Brandon Flowers on his tour.

Here's there latest Facebook update, posted on Tuesday:
UK tour in October with Brandon Flowers!! We are to be heading back to Andy's motherland to support the very talented Mr. Brandon Flowers. We are super excited!!! First date Oct. 12th in Glasgow. Details to follow soon...
A couple weeks after their September 30th show at Fluxx (with The Silent Comedy, Jared Mees & The Grown Children from Portland, Little Hurricane, and DJ Claire), they'll be heading off to the UK for at least six dates supporting Brandon Flowers (of the Killers).

Here are the confirmed dates:

10/12/2010 Glasgow, SL 02 Academy - Glasgow
10/13/2010 Leeds, No State 02 Academy
10/14/2010 Liverpool, No State 02 Academy
10/16/2010 Manchester, No State Academy
10/17/2010 London, No State HMV Forum
10/18/2010 Birmingham, No State HMV Institute

It's no secret that there are many local ties with The Killers... my high school friend Dave "Fiddy" was a sound tech with the band for several years, Ray Suen played with the band for their final tours (which he blogged about here on sd:dialed in), and some of The Silent Comedy and photographer Rich Cook have have all joined the band on tour in Europe. Killers guitarist Dave Keuning has been hanging out at the Casbah quite a bit these days, too. I'll be checking out the new White Horse Recorders studio next week, so maybe I'll get some more info out of the boys. Until then, my sincere congratulations to the band. This is a huge opportunity and all I can really say is that it's about time.

Ray's Tour Diary: Best Week Ever?

My sense of time may no longer be the most reliable thing in the world having been in too many cities in too few days. The week I'm talking about might actually have spanned a full ten days without my realizing it. But it's worth blogging about.

After playing two nights in Manchester, the Killers left the UK to attack the European continent starting in Amsterdam. Now, as far as Amsterdam is concerned, I don't know why, when allegedly 75% of Americans don't have a passport, 18-year olds aren't asking their respective parents en masse for a visa and a ticket to Amsterdam instead of Vegas. It being my first time in Holland, I couldn't help thinking how Amsterdam makes Las Vegas look like Sunday school. I missed my bike terribly and am still kicking myself for not finding out about the rentals available all over the city. Debauchery aside, it is undoubtedly one of the prettiest cities I've ever been in, a real life manifestation of Candy-Land. The fact that the gig was canceled due to a bomb threat was taken quite well by the Killers' crew as it made for a bonus night off in Amsterdam (who knew so many people had it out for IKEA?). Not only that, it guarantees a makeup date for the gig meaning I'll be back in Amsterdam before I know it when I'll be sure to capitalize on a bike rental opportunity.

Night off

After Amsterdam, we set out on a three city tour of Germany including Dusseldorf, Berlin, and Munich. One thing about the German fans, they totally dig the new Killers stuff and so I totally dig them. After exploring Berlin with BKXIV, I met up with my lovely pal, Devon Sproule, whom was serendipitously playing on the other side of town on the same night as the Killers at the Admiralspalast. She was just wrapping up a tour of her own of the UK and Europe and was set to go home the next day when we found out we were in the same city. For our English readers, if you happen to be in London on May 14th, check Devon out at Shepherd's Bush Empire where she'll be headlining and kicking your ass. I'll admit I'm disappointed as the Killers will be their fiftieth leg of a US tour by then.

In Munich, I met up with another old friend from lifetimes ago. Hayato Naka, currently assistant principal 2nd violinist of the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, was playing in Munich on our day off. I met Hayato when I was 15 at a Music Festival in Saluzzo, Italy where I found out I didn't have the discipline or drive to practice the requisite 10 hours a day to become a professional classical violinist. It was a nice change of perspective to hear a professional orchestra rehearse again. I had flashbacks to when I used to fall asleep during rehearsals and theirs was no different as I nodded off during Petrushka. However, I have to admit it was refreshing, after almost two years since playing with the La Jolla Symphony, to hear the warmth of sound that only an orchestra in a concert hall can create, completely unlike the orchestral tracks that have been substituted into the sound of so many a rock band. Yada yada yada, Hofbrauhausen, liter steins, crackling roast pig, etc. etc.

In Milan (vaguely) today, woefully far from the city center. I'm off to figure out how I'm going to get in a city stroll before sound check.

Ciao ciao.

Ray On The Road: Checking In From the UK

By any standard, it must have been a good week for me.

The vast majority of it was spent in one of my new favorite cities, London, where I said hello to the likes of Paul McCartney and Al Green and played in two of the more mythical venues in the UK, the Royal Albert Hall and BBC Studio 1 on the Later with Jools Holland, not to mention seeing metal gods, Slayer, on Halloween at the Hammersmith. Later on, I ended up in Liverpool where the coolest of the cool in the entertainment industry had descended to attend the MTV European Music Awards. I found myself in a club where Perez Hilton threw the official EMA pre-party. I've never been less cool or smell more of cigarette smoke. It was awesome Estelle and Kanye as well as the Ting Tings play a tiny little club where the Liverpudlians went absolutely bonkers for "American Boy" and "Shut Up and Let me Go" (hey).

Any regrets? Not asking Sir Paul how many holes he's found it's taken to fill the Albert Hall, not asking Damon Albarn how he got so fascinated by old Chinese legends, and not demanding to play the enormous, 10,000-pipe organ at the Albert Hall.

Brandon on the Albert Hall Organ

In summary, the English go nutty for the Killers, that's no secret, I can't stand MTV, and I've developed an unhealthy addiction to Bulmer's Cider. Pret a Manger rules and I've finally gotten used to saying, "white americano for takeaway" instead of "americano with room to go."

Off to Berlin!

"Bonjour!" from Killerland

It's been hardly a month, since I left San Diego, and already it feels like much longer. It's cold outside, scarf and coat weather, and my hair's getting too long like it was in the summer. Not that it's a bad thing or anything.

First of all, I've regained possession of a camera so I'll be able to do what a proper blogger does and show, in images, what I've been so incapable and/or lazy to do in words. Unfortunately, no words or images can describe properly my sheer disdain for the city of Las Vegas, where I spent the first two weeks of October. Every day unbearably dry and every strip mall on every corner exactly the same as the one before it with no diversions anywhere to alleviate the boredom instilled by the constant neon and indoor smoking.

Actually, I guess I like the indoor smoking part. (Click 'keep on reading' for the full post.)

I didn't have a camera for the Killers' first trip to NYC, when we filmed Saturday Night Live, so there's no real proof I was ever there, except for the video footage which was on Youtube for a little while before NBC Universal swiftly and predictably removed it. In any case, I've heard it's re-airing on November 22nd so superfans and ego strokers alike should be able to get their fill. To recap, I loved being in New York in the fall, witnessing the real and wild energy of a live SNL taping, shaking Amy Poehler's very pregnant, very talented hands, seeing Anne Hathaway's astonishing beauty in person, and playing in front of my sister who was in the audience. The one thing I'm still kicking myself about, besides not having a camera, is not introducing myself rather, slobbering all over, Tina Fey while I was at 30 Rock. Not only would I have slept better that night, but maybe some of her superstar status would have rubbed off on me in the process, catapulting me to non-Las Vegas-centric success!

Who knows, right?

Anyway, in case you missed it, I can't believe I was actually there when they did this. What was great, was actually seeing it reverberate across CNN for the next week and realizing, "I was there!"

I found myself watching Sex and the City, late night on TBS, after returning to Vegas, feeling equal parts appalled and wistful that I was stuck in Vegas for another two weeks and, therefore, not in New York City in the fall. A few things come to mind after re-reading that sentence. Yes, I'm a little embarrassed, but moreover, do women actually like that show? Sitting through an hour of it was like staring at the facade of the New York, New York casino for a week through my window, both overdrawn and glaringly unreal. Especially that freaky Samantha chick.

Kim Cattrall

Skip, skip, skip. I don't even like writing about being in Vegas, two weeks of my life I'll never get back. Rehearsed productively, played two shows, spent a lot of time away from the Strip in downtown Las Vegas, played blackjack, went up a little, down a lot, then back up to even. There is a damn good sandwich at Capriotti's though... I'll need to take a picture of their Capastrami next time I'm there. Holla at me if you know what I'm saying.

After Vegas, we returned to New York to play at the Hammerstein Ballroom. I made new habits out of going to the lower east side, going to the Library across the street from Katz's on nights off, getting lost in Harlem at the most dangerous hours of the night, and finally getting some duck in Chinatown. But, yes, yes, the Hammerstein where, as Rolling Stone puts it, "the set design was Miami hotel chic: white tiger backdrop, light-up palm trees and orchids laced into amplifiers."

In case you're curious

What an event it was, eagerly attended by superfans, yuppies on their nights off, coked up models, and celebrities like Jon Bon Jovi and Chris Martin. The sets are starting to feel like, "The Killers' Play Their Greatest Hitz!" with songs from their upcoming album "Day & Age" sprinkled in. The crowd response has been uniformly nutty and I guess it's no secret the Killers' live show is truly a sight to behold.

We've not played much since then. A few TV appearances here and there, for example Taratata in Paris, where I giddily introduced myself to Chris and Chris, the rhythm section of Vampire Weekend and confessed that I still have not been able to get their CD out of my car. It remains there even now, embalmed in my car parked in Vegas while I'm abroad.

With Vampire Weekend in Paris. Yes, it is blurry. No, I can't fix it.

Taratata Set

Luckier still, me and Tommy, the newest addition to the Killers touring gang and saxophonist/writer/spelunking extraordinaire, were able to finagle a few free bicycles and rode all over Paris during our stay. Of course, I have the requisite photos of the Eiffel Tower and Champ d'Elysses, but I won't bore you with them. Among the weirder things I saw were roving, costumed rollerblading gangs, a Tom Sachs Hello Kitty exhibit at the Eiffel Tower (which I think is also going on in Manhattan), a Flaming Lips inspired teenaged brass band playing on the steps of the Opera House, and Claude Debussy's grave. Surprisingly, Paris a very bike-friendly city as well as a very American-curious city. No fewer than three Parisians asked who I was voting for in the presidential election. One of them was ready to jump all over me if I mentioned McCain. Fortunately, good times were had all around when I proved myself to be no friend of George Bush or the GOP. This against the backdrop of thousands of "W." posters all over the city. One regret I have is not being able to see Oliver Stone's movie in Paris where I'm sure audience reactions would have been priceless. Gobama.

Seriously, this is just to prove that I had a bike, the tower is incidental

I'm currently in London where I still have not done a single lick of work. I plan on finding some to do, I swear, if I can ever get to sleep. Instead I've been sight seeing, finding time to blog, and watching a bit of television. The American elections are all over the news here too but the English people I've spoken to seem considerably less curious about my views than their French counterparts. Also in the news, when I woke up yesterday morning, was that Russell Brand and Jonathan Ross were under fire for lewd comments made on Brand's BBC Radio 2 show about Fawlty Towers' Andrew Sachs. Now, I'll be surprised if anyone back home knows who these people are. Russell Brand I discovered on Conan a few months ago plugging Forgetting Sarah Marshall and whom you may know better as the host of this year's edition of the VMAs. Andrew Sachs played Manuel in the show John Cleese did after Monty Python, something I got plenty of on the bus of the last Killers run. I don't know why I know Jonathan Ross, I just do, from Youtube, he's like Letterman over here. Why this is at all relevant and not just gossip is that The Killers were scheduled to play the Jonathan Ross show later that evening. And, just as the crew was removing last case from the truck, the word came down that Ross was being suspended indefinitely and we had no show to do. It's been strangely satisfying to be involved in some small way with this huge drama unfolding across countless newspapers in the tube. Also cancelled, Miley Cyrus.

I've been a state of limbo ever since, filling my time with finding out just how big this city is, riding the tube for seemingly hours, shopping in Kensington, visiting Abbey Road studios, and finally finding out what all the fuss about Wagamama is about. Oh, and the women are impossibly beautiful here and they're all immaculately dressed. Come to think of it, so are some of the men. Some of the coats and boots I've seen since being here, sheesh.

Anyhow, I'm done, I need to sleep, I guess I'm not as caught up as I thought.

Vegas is out it's damn mind...

This is a post that Ray Suen started a couple weeks ago but never managed to post. I thought it was incomplete, but maybe he just never clicked the 'post' button. Nonetheless, I thought I'd post it tonight since I'm not writing...

So, I've found it increasingly difficult to find motivation (and material with which) to blog about since I've been in Vegas. It is hot. Unbearingly so. It's currently 89 degrees and it's veritably cool compared to the average of 107 we've had for the last ten days since I've been here.

The sleepless lifestyle of the city must be catching up to me as I'm watching the sun rise for no particular reason. The bars and casinos are open for 24 hours around here and there are people partying all the time. This includes my gracious host, Mark, bassist of the Killers, who even now is probably out and about, if I heard correctly, carousing with the likes of Perry Farrell and Slash. I've been pretty good about being in bed before 2 and up before 10, but now, in my sleepless state, I blog. For you.

Other than my ever growing dependence on air conditioning and cigarettes, there's little to report. I'll be writing more about this giant touring machine called the Killers in the coming months, but the most interesting tidbit I have for you is the incident that went down Saturday night when Coldplay was in town playing at the MGM Grand. They invited the Killers to come see the show and while I thought this was a must-see situation, but rehearsal dragged on to the point that we were willing to waffle a bit. After deliberation, we decided to try and make it before the encores. We were told to park next to Coldplay's tour buses in the loading area of the MGM Grand.

This is where things get interesting.

As we arrived in an un-eco-friendly caravan of five cars, an old security guard with a diet coke in his hand met us, anxious to get his rocks off by exercising his privileges as a security guard. Cue much yelling, screaming.

"You can't be here! This isn't right! No! Who told you could be here?"

Coldplay Production.

"This isn't right! You can't stay here!"

At this point, we're on the phone with Coldplay's production trying to figure out if there's any parking in a non-hysterical security guard zone. We get back in our cars to get back to the next parking lot, which would hopefully be more controversy-free. No such luck. As we left, Dave, our esteemed guitar player, flipped the bird and said a lot of other things that start with the letter "F."

Turns out the next parking lot was about 50 feet away, so the offended security official came tumbling after us screaming, waving his diet coke about willy nilly. Like a baseball umpire he screamed, "you're gone! You're gone!" gesticulating with his diet coke much the way an umpire would with his index finger. Hotel security came out to deal with the ruckus that was brewing. Dave left sheepishly, thinking as we all did that we'd be getting a little farther away. However, at this point the gauntlet was down and hotel security turned into hotel managers into metro police. Meanwhile, poor little Coldplay production assistants are running around trying to make things right while certain Killers are taking up Dave's fallen antagonistic standard. I'm going to leave out the embarrassing details about what may or may not have been said, but the point is I didn't get to see Coldplay, and that's a bummer.

Brief updates

I went to House of Blues last night for The National. That band seriously kills me. It was hard taking photos when his voice just makes you well up with tears. Not like sad tears, more like cathartic happy this-music-is-too-fucking-good tears. Too bad my HoB experience was less than stellar. Man, seriously that venue is one step forward, two steps back. I was privy to some information that just pissed me off...but I'll write about all those things later tonight with all the pictures.

In the meantime, I wanted to follow up on a few of the newsy bits I posted last week.

First, now that Street Scene is back in the works, I had a couple people point out that in addition to Cat Power scheduled to play on Friday, September 19, The New Pornographers are also sheduled to play according to the Matador Records website.

Second, a follow up about Ray Suen joining The Killers. If you take a look at my contributors, you'll see Ray was added there. He was up at Sasquatch over the weekend working for The Flaming Lips and told me he'd try to write a recap of his experience at the festival since he was going to be costumed onstage during their performance, but he hasn't done so yet. (No pressure, Ray) We chatted on Firday and he was ecstatic that he's gonna be joining up with The Killers. They're doing a huge tour so he'll be travelling all over, playing Leeds, Reading, and all those huge shows. He'll be playing guitar and keys for the band which gives him a good change from mostly strings he played with Louis XIV. Maybe enough nudging and he can write about all that himself...

Last, I wanted to mention that next week there's an election in San Diego, and I wanted to throw my endorsement behind Eric Bidwell. The guy is one of us and deserves some serious credit for having the balls to call out Mr. Douche Sanders and that complete dick, Steve Francis. Our city is in some dire need for change and I think I'd rather have someone completely green and willing to learn on the job than these dicks who just sit pretty and make backdoor deals for all their fatcat friends. If you want more info, go to http://www.revolutionarymayor.com/

I'll be online tonight to post all those pics...
