I decided I would get a quickie post up instead of continuing to gather news and links. I have to be real, I can't really even watch news right now. We're bombing the shit out of Iran, ICE is still out here running amok, everyone in the Epstein files is still being protected except for the actual victims, and instead of fearing what TFG is gonna do next, we have to worry about the real ones behind the puppetry who are vying to succeed him when they can't weekend-at-Bernie's him any longer. So instead, I do my days at the Zoo and Seaworld, I bought a new couch, so actually working from home is no longer miserable, Darren and I take every chance we can to drive to the mountains or desert for quick daytrips, and last week when he was sent on a work job in Ocotillo Wells, I joined the group for a night of camping, then a trip out to The Living Desert when they all had to go back to their project. So yeah, things can be good and amazing and then all around terrible at the same time, so I'm just trying to focus on the good and keep my head above water. I hope you can do the same.

I mentioned that I had a pretty great week last week. After seeing Dan Mangan and Israel Nebeker (Blind Pilot) at Soda Bar on Sunday, I couldn't get their songs out of my head, which gave me the perfect excuse to go to LA. When it was raining on Wednesday morning, I thought it a great sign to drive up to spend the day at the LA Zoo, figuring the rain would drive down crowds. I was correct in my assessment and had an amazing day with the orangutans and chimps, and a little bit of time with the gorillas, too, but they spend most of their time along the rear wall of their habitat, so I didn't stay long. After the zoo closed, I freshened up and changed and made my way to Moroccan Lounge for the show, which was extra magical and my first time at that venue. You can read all the rest, after the jump.

| Maned Wolf Cora and a pup (Taken 1.23.26) |
In case you missed it while you were trying to celebrate the New Year, the CDC switched up vaccine schedules for infants, children, and adolescents, and in case you missed it, because you were watching ICE attack, beat, shoot, and kill unarmed people, the County and other counties and the State of California all clapped back.
It's crazy that I wrote the above maybe two weeks ago, and now we have another murder by ICE and the country is reeling, but there are rumors on the internet that they are being pulled back from Minneapolis under immense public pressure (and everyone seeing with their own eyes what happened), so hopefully that's true...though if they're just getting reshuffled and redeployed to other municipalities, including here in San Diego, we need to be ready. I know there's a lot of news happening and I just don't have it in me to collect all the many links of all the terrible things, but I need to get this one up before I get around to listings this week, so click away as you see fit. Or just watch a murder trial on YouTube, because while murder is vile and disturbing, somehow watching a trial can be an escape from all of the really fucking awful things happening around us.

Rosey's Diary & Newsy Things: NYE | San Diego 2026: GET YOUR SHIT TOGETHER | Zoo Goss | Everyone Is Sick | RIP Tim Lowman |
It's been a few weeks since the last diary post and while I always intend to write some deep and thoughtful wrapup of the year, there's always something...my cat went missing and then after more than 2 months, we found her deceased, almost literally next door, and then the holidays snuck up, and I've been going to the Zoo and Seaworld on the regular, and then I've had this pain in my neck and back whenever I'm online for any stretch of time so I'm trying to work that out, and then it was Christmas, and then I got the news over the weekend that Tim Lowman died, and I've just chosen to be out living, rather than holed up writing or aggregating or generally getting myself worked up about the horrible, egregious, disgusting things happening by the current administration, and it's all just too much. And while I haven't said anything on socials about Tim, the news is absolutely heartbreaking and devastating and I can't stop thinking of beautiful little Marlow growing up without her amazing daddy. We have been friends for many, many years, but over the last few, most of our interactions consisted of running into their little family as they traversed the zoo, and usually I could get Kizzy and Handsome, the African Gray Parrots, to engage in some communications. Of course the passage of time also brings great things...Toby got the care he needed, my God sister had her twin babies, I got to go on an epic California roadtrip, and overall, my family is all doing well, albeit after losing both Ficus and Tikka this year. So yeah, I'm a happy and fulfilled person striving to be better in 2026, but 2025 was just a super fucked up trash year on many levels and not everyone made it out alive, but all the rest of us can do is keep on keeping on and hope (and act when we can) for a better tomorrow.
I love you. Stay safe out there. Nolite te bastardes carborundorum.

Rosey's Diary and Newsy Things: City of San Diego Approves & Sets Rates For Balboa Park Parking and lots of other tidbits. | San Diego Zoo To Implement Paid Parking For Non-Members |
I guess I've had this post in the works for several weeks, but never got around to posting because I was busy showing up at City Council meetings to speak against paid parking at the Zoo and Balboa Park, and then running around between the Zoo and Seaworld, working the occasional merch gigs, and spending late nights and early evenings and sometimes early mornings looking for my cat, to no avail. Honestly, besides checking on Pawboost, we'd mostly given up on active searches, but then we saw a post of a sighting that maybe was Tikka, so it reignited me actually walking neighborhoods at night when I was able and motivated. Now we're just past Thanksgiving, and after spending some time with family at San Elijo State Campground and also hanging around the house with Toby, who came home from campus for most of the weekend, and Darren, who got to enjoy the rare extended weekend, I'm at Music Box selling for Flamingosis. It's been nice kinda being a homebody and indulging in the tryptophan coma from the turkey we cooked this year (for the first time with Darren, ever!) and I'm just passing the time until I can pack up this merch and ship it off and get back into my cozy pajamas while finishing off the final two episodes of Murdaugh: Death in the Family, since we took advantage of Black Friday deals on Hulu+ & Disney, as well as the super cheap offer for HBO Max with ads.
I hope everyone had a nice holiday. I cut out a lot of the usual national and international news links this time around, because it has been so bonkers lately that I just have to assume everyone is watching or reading the news incessantly like I do. There's a great user on Threads called @decodingfoxnews that transcribes quotes from TFG and rereads them in a woman's voice, so you can hear what the lunatic is saying without actually having to see his dastardly face or hear his vulgar voice. 10/10, highly recommend.
