Jeff's Weekly Pick: Father John Misty @ The Casbah Wednesday May 2, 2012

Creating a pseudonym in the music world is nothing new, rather an attempt to create a new identity when separating one’s life from the past. This appears to be what Josh Tillman has done with his new recording name, Father John Misty. Many will recognize Mr. Tillman as the (former) drummer of popular indie band Fleet Foxes. Josh has recorded half of a dozen albums under the J Tillman moniker. Fear Fun is the first offering from Father John Misty. Why the name change after such a prolific output from J Tillman? From what I have read Josh has been suffering from bouts of depression, so maybe this is a way for him to journey into a new life phase . The music is a form of Americana but the songs are not sad at all. His honest folksy style is captivating and keeps everything on an even keel throughout the record. Having seen josh perform at Casbah a few years ago, I promise you an enjoyable and introspective listening (and viewing) experience. There appears to be new life in Father John Misty and his music.
