Independence Day: Protect Your Pets | CoViD-19: Two Americas, Two Levels Of Risk | Wired Offers Photo Tricks For Fireworks |

Balboa Park View From San Diego Zoo Skyfari (Taken 6.7.21)

I was trying to remember if I did anything for 4th of July last year and all I really remember was watching my tweaker neighbors setting off fireworks in the alley, so it must've been the year before when I went to the Zoo by myself while Darren was working and maybe Nova was in St Louis and just rode the Skyfari back and forth a few round trips to watch what I could see of the Big Bay Boom, which was not much. I hope I'm not bumming out my household but I have no desire to leave the house for any reason today. It's not just the anti-vaxxers and anti-maskers, but the last year and a half only exacerbated the lack of courtesy and dangerous driving on the road, and on a holiday it's bad times a thousand.

In fact, I woke up super early because somehow I got a call from my parents at 5am and then couldn't fall back asleep. After just talking to my mom, she has no idea how they could've called but I have 4 minutes of NBC news on my voicemail. It's okay though because I was hungry and caught up on some kitten time and some of my shows before everyone else woke up, and then Nova and I watched Skater Girl on Netflix which was a super cute movie.

So maybe I'll go hang out in the yard or do some day drinking or watch more garbage TV, but I'll be home regretting not purchasing a thunder jacket for my dog.

I hope everyone stays safe out there.

Things To Do in San Diego: Thursday, July 4th-Monday, July 8, 2019

I decided to repost this weekend's listings because there were a few updates and I didn't want them buried under all my archive photos. It's such a gorgeous day in San Diego though, so I'm gonna shut down the laptop and head out to enjoy our fair city. Be safe out there, don't drink and drive, and be really nice and grateful and generous to Uber and Lyft drivers like Darren who are out there to pick you up and get you safely to your destination while missing out on their holiday with family and friends to be at your service.

4th of July Fireworks and Events

I'm sure I'm not the only one feeling a little less than celebratory this Independence Day. Nova's out of town so there's not that sense of urgency to do anything, really. But I know there's lots of fun to be had and Darren will be out working all day, so I'm gonna make the best of it. If you haven't made plans, last year we just had a little BBQ at home and made a last minute decision to catch the SDMTS Rapid to Waterfront Park. NBC has a list of fireworks and I'm sure every other news outlet does, too, I just wasn't up for compiling my own list this year. I will note, however, that the Cabrillo Monument is sold out, so don't head there. If you want to take public transit, fares are BOGO today! Which really does me no good since I'll be adventuring solo, but in case you wanna make your own beer crawl or fireworks adventure, that is a good option. And let's all pour one out for the infamous 2012 Big Bay Bust. Ah, good times.

San Diego Bay
San Diego's biggest 4th of July Fireworks show takes over the San Diego Bay with four barges at different points. There are great viewing areas all along the bay for this annual event! Parking is free and plentiful at SDCCU Stadium as well as at other park-and-ride lots throughout the system.

Due to the Holiday, MTS will be operating a Sunday schedule. However, to accommodate the many thousands of people heading to the Big Bay Boom fireworks, the Trolley will be adding significant service on all three lines!

Remember, it's a major holiday so the FRIENDS RIDE FREE promotion is in effect. A friend may ride free with a fare-paying customer on all MTS routes on July 4, 2019.

Prime viewing locations are near the following stations:

County Center / Little Italy
Santa Fe Depot
America Plaza
Seaport Village
Convention Center
Gaslamp Quarter

Things To Do In San Diego: Monday, June 27-Thursday, June 30, 2016

We're back from another trip to Hercules. It's always nice spending time out of the city and catching up with Darren's family, but it's also really hard when it comes to talking about an aging parent and 'next steps' and envisioning scenarios that can come up unexpectedly and all the paperwork and details that have to be thought about. I guess we never really feel like we're old enough to deal with these sorts of things. But overall it was a great trip. We also had some van trouble, but I was impressed that a FEMALE auto technician was the one who was able to diagnose and fix a problem that seemed to allude every other mechanic we've talked to about it for the last couple years, and it drove like a dream the whole way home. Now we come to a week we've been dreading for months, when Nova leaves to spend four weeks in St Louis. I can't really get into it, but suffice to say that while Darren and I plan on enjoying the time together, it's going to be super anxious and stressful, too. Until then, we plan on making the best of the week, probably hitting the beach and the fair and waterslides before she goes. Listings this week are pretty thin, but I did them through the 4th of July so you can make plans if fireworks are your thing. Monday through Thursday listings are after the jump.
