Today was a day of lots of concert announcements. Because of Coachella, a lot of acts have to keep their summer plans mum until after the desert debauchery is done, so with that in mind, today Arcade Fire announced a San Diego tour date on August 5, with tickets on sale Friday, April 25 at 10am. FM 94/9 is presenting the show and will have tickets to give away on air, a presale password, and presumably tickets at their Random Acts of Kindness stops.
Way to steal our thunder, AF.

Arcade Fire, Hollywood Bowl, 9/20/07 "Intervention"
My seats were good, but my little camera is challenged, so I did capture a couple clips of the show, but they're probably better listened to than watched. I loved this song as Win dedicated it to "Governor Bush". There were two teenage girls next to me singing on top of their lungs, so it's their voices you hear, not mine. (Learned my lesson at Snow Patrol not to sing with a camera running) Poor girls got bummed out when the women in the box with them asked them to stop singing so loud.

Thursday Recap: LA, Arcade Fire, LCD Soundsystem @ Hollywood Bowl
What a day. I honestly couldn't think of the last time I went to Los Angeles- still can't...but it has been years. I was excited all summer about having purchased tickets to the Arcade Fire & LCD Soundsystem show in LA, but for some reason, when the day came, I was only mildly excited about it. I think it might've had to do with my experience at Wilco...overhyping a situation in my head so much that I couldn't be anything but let down.
Natalie and Joe were kind enough to let me tag along with them to LA. I met Nat at 12:30, by 1:30 we met Joe at UCSD and were on our way to Los Angeles. A short two hours later, with various music CDs and Sirius' "left of center" as our soundtrack, we stopped at our first destination: Amoeba Records. We spent nearly an hour going through their thousands of CDs and I kept grabbing stuff to buy, only to talk myself out of it. I have so much music to listen to at the moment, and I just didn't want to add anything new until I properly get through what I have, though I was really tempted by some bargain buys, some out of print selections, and I really want the new anniversary edition of Counting Crows "August And Everything After," a disc that was a huge part of my life in high school...but I resisted and browsed and let them do the buying while I read the Onion.
From Amoeba we went to a British pub called the Cat & Fiddle just a couple blocks west on Sunset. There was a nice patio so we had a light meal and hung out, killing time until 6, our meeting time set with Kristian. Heather, a girl I'd met at a party was there, which felt random enough, but as we were finishing up our lunches, who should walk into the place but Tim Pyles and Owen Salerno from 94/9. Coincidence or stars aligned, I dunno. Funny thing was there was another guy there, Roman, that Tim knew from SD who lives in LA now. Crazy how small this world is.

We wrapped things up and headed to Kristian's who lives in the Los Feliz area of LA. The plan was to park there and ride the Metro to the show. Shortly after arriving, a gaggle of K's friends arrived, we hit the well stocked liquor store on the corner to get drinks for the show, and we were almost on our way, when Pete, Kristian's friend who bought my extra ticket, got a call from a friend who lived across the street from the Hollywood Bowl, that he was saving a spot for us.
Nat, Joe and I went with Pete while everyone else took the Metro. Pete was a really cool guy and ended up being a great person to share the concert with, but man...LA drivers. He navigated well, but those red lights on the car in front of us? Yeah, they're brake lights. You probably shouldn't approach them at 45 mph on city streets. I get carsick very easily and it wasn't until we parked, walked into the venue, found our seats (passing by the House Party girls, Amanda and Heather), and cracked open the first beer that my heart finally went back to a normal rate.
A funny thing happened, again, coincidence or cosmos? But I really had no idea where my seats were, since there's lettered sections, numbered rows, and numbered box seats, but when Kristian and I had purchased our tickets, we tried to compare where we were. I thought he was going to be in one of the closer boxes than us, but was content to take in the show with Pete. Turned out that their box was one row back from us, and one spot over, so we were diagonal from all of them for the duration of the show.

I was glad that they'd tipped us off about bringing our own alcohol to the show and it's really amazing to me, coming from uptight San Diego where certain promoters and venues would have everyone cavity searched if they could, to walk in with a cooler of 8 tall boy Pilsner Urquell's, a camera, and snacks, and for it to be totally ok. There are people searching when you enter who "search" bags, but my guess is that it's pretty superficial and they're looking out more for weapons than anything else. And since the security was on my left and my bags hooked on my right shoulder, they didn't even see my bags and we walked right in. Kristian and his group had a case of Two Buck Chuck in their booth and drank it like Kool-Aid. Other people had full ice chests, food, and in the middle of LCD someone nearby busted out a bucket of KFC. I guess they got the munchies from all the weed people were casually smoking.
We missed the first band (Wild Lights?) but were there in time for all of LCD Soundsystem. It's no secret that I'm not a dance music girl, and for some reason I wrote off the band years ago. I mean, I loved "North American Scum" this year, but I just don't know how nobody ever turned me on to their glory. The singer looks more like a soccer dad than the lead of such a raucous band and he'd say things between the set like "You wanna know something really funny? This is our job! To play this music for you. How cool is that?" And 13,574 fans went crazy. I guess I also had this preconceived notion that they were synthy and electronic, when in reality they are a full band with amazing pieces that make the whole. What planet have I been on, really? I mean, it's embarassing to admit how clueless about them I was.

Anyway, they played a full set and I was cozied up in my little terrace box with my hoodie and my beer and Pete thought I looked bored. "I'm dancing on the inside," I replied, and he seemed to know exactly what I meant.
After the set we joined the mobs on the patio for our one celebrity sighting, Rainn Wilson, who plays Dwight on NBC's "The Office". Then some guy walked by in sunglasses and I couldn't stop laughing. Maybe he was "someone" too, but it was really dark everywhere. Sunglasses at night. I was clearly in LA. In all fairness though, the crowd was cool and as it goes, everyone saw someone they knew so introductions were plentiful throughout the evening. I ran into Tim and Owen again and we chatted for a bit. They told us they talked to the guy from The Office, but it turns out it was one of the writers who was also at the show. Before we knew it the time to take our seats for Arcade Fire.
Part of my "excitement suppression" about this show was because I knew in my heart that there was no way this show could top the show at Spreckels in April, especially since I was privy to catch part of their sound check, so I won't even compare the two because it's apples and oranges, really. Still, this set struck a chord. No "religious experience" this time, but the hair on my arms definitely stood up at some peak moments in the show. They kicked off the show with "Black Mirror" and sounded great. Regine looked pretty in a green dress and dancing around during certain songs, and I was entertained by Will on the side of the stage playing all of his various instruments with the energy and enjoyment that the 3 year olds at my mom's daycare have when they get to beat a drum. I feel like the sound could've been a bit louder in the venue but really, I have no complaints about the Hollywood Bowl. (though sorry I don't have better pics)

Here's the Setlist (borrowed from an AF fansite):
Setlist:
1. Black Mirror
2. Keep The Car Running
3. Neighborhood #2 (Laïka)
4. No Cars Go
5. Haïti
6. Intervention (dedicated to Jeb Bush)
7. (Antichrist Television Blues)
8. My Body Is A Cage
9. Windowsill
10. Ocean Of Noise
11. Neighborhood #1 (Tunnels)
12. Neighborhood #3 (Power Out)
13. Rebellion (Lies)
Encore:
14. The Well And The Lighthouse
15. Wake Up
We knew that there was a 30% chance of rain, so it was a little chilly. The band joked about the weather, saying that was the closest we'd ever get to knowing winter. But the sky was clear and the moon hung overhead till it dropped out behind the hills. But just before the encore, the sky got ominous and it was really beautiful while the crowd belted out along with "Wake Up."

And there's a cross on a hill in the distance that seemed to just be sitting in the middle of the sky.

So maybe I had my "religious experience" after all.
I was really having a great time at the show but all things must end. I found out that Kristian "got lost" and left the show, and his friends all had rides back to the house, so we were on our own to figure out how to get back to Joe's car parked at Kristian's house. Pete had driven us to the show but lived in the opposite direction. The cosmos at work again, apparently, and I ran into Tim and Owen again, contacted Pete and Natalie, and before we knew it, we were in the parking lot bumping into Eric, Matt and Dee.

Owen and Tim dropped the three of us of on Hollywood and Highland so we could catch the Metro back to Los Feliz.

Being LA, I'm a little bummed I didn't get a better picture of this ridiculous hummer limo making a 9 point turn onto Hollywood.

It was my first time on the Metro so I had to capture that as well...

My navigators:

Finally our train arrived.

And that was pretty much the end of the night. We walked to Kristian's, I picked up my stuff, and we were on our way home to San Diego, though we had to zig zag a little for some freeway closures. I sat in the back of Joe's mini with Miracle Fortress and the National in my iPod, soundtracking the ride home. Big thanks to Joe and Natalie for allowing me to tag along, to Kristian, Villar, Chris and everyone else at the house who helped set the tone of the night for me, to Pete for buying the ticket, for the ride and for being a fun concert bud, and to Pyles and Owen for the ride and just for being who you are. Also, a special shout out to Stef, thanks for checking on Pascha. I don't imagine I'll be in LA anytime soon, but it's really great to know that I've got friends up there.

Arcade Fire & LCD Soundsystem to Tour This Fall
According to Pitchfork Media, Arcade Fire and LCD Soundsystem will be launching a full fall tour together. The only dates thus far are on September 17 at Red Rocks (that's two days AFTER Monolith) and September 20th at the Hollywood Bowl. I know I'm asking a lot here, but wouldn't they just slip right into the Street Scene lineup so amazingly?
Are bands refusing because they don't like San Diego? They don't want to play "Fairgrounds"? Or do they hate LiveNation? Or are the bands we want just not being asked?

Arcade Fire @ Spreckels 4/26/07
Words are not enough. Arcade Fire gave an amazing performance to a sold out crowd at Spreckels, and despite the fact that I know there were a lot of out of towners around, it didn't spoil our fun.
I skipped the Mute Math in-store, deciding that AF was all the music I wanted and needed for a day. Or a week. Or forever. I arrived at Spreckels, found myself princess parking, and headed into the venue. I bumped into some friends and we decided it was beer o'clock and went to Horton Sports Bar (?). More people joined us and somehow 7 became 8 and 8 became 8:45 and we had completely missed Cass McCombs. Instead we went to the venue, arriving just as the house lights went dark and the yells and cheering filled the venue. I passed off my camera to Nick Montes, a friend of mine with waaay better seats than me, and went up to my balcony.
We found our seats (which actually weren't bad) and got lost in the show. That venue is amazing and while not a church, has that quality that only old theatres and churches have. As the band went into Wake Up (4th song?) we realized the crazies dancing on the side of our balcony were friends, so we bailed our seats and stood there for the majority of the show.

After an hour and a good sampling of both Funeral and Neon Bible, I was sure the show was winding down and was trying to get my camera back but Nick was ignoring his phone song after song. We watched from the balcony as 4 awesome people jumped the barricade to dance and two guys jumped on stage. We watched the barricaded area fill up with tons of people and Win jumping into the crowd. We watched tons of people flood toward the front of the stage. I wanted my camera. So I raced down to the floor, made my way to my friends, got my camera, and watched the rest of the show from the floor.

Part of the awesome part of the whole show was that it was a Tim Mays/Casbah event, so all the guys from the Casbah were the main security...so Porter walking through the crowd saying "clear the aisle" was more for going through the motions than to actually evacuate those of us down there without the right tickets. The ushers were nowhere to be found, so that was cool, too.

There's just something about the whole show that was kinda overwhelming. That many people singing along, on their feet most of the show, clapping along, everything. Alex of Swim Party said the show was a religious experience and probably broke up a lot of bands who feel they couldn't live up to the example set. The bar was set high for sure.

Win got a little mad about some feedback, but I didn't really notice. 9 people onstage with 8000 instruments and amps and mics, I can't imagine there not being some feedback at times. I had hoped that the band would encore in the foyer as they had in London and NY, but instead they gave us a double encore. The night ended with Neon Bible, as pages of a bible were rhythmically torn out one by one. The whole night was simply amazing.
There was no making it to the Rapture as the show ended closer to 11. And really, how could that have even compared? Instead a whole slew of friends headed to Dobsons for late night cocktails as we recapped the night. I feel lucky to have gotten tickets, I feel lucky to have witnessed such an amazing show, I feel lucky to have been surrounded by so many friends, and I especially feel lucky to have been backstage during the soundcheck earlier in the day. Now that it's gone, I need to find something new to look forward to.

ARCADE FIRE TONIGHT!!
I cannot wait. I just got to go into Spreckels from backstage and got to watch and listen to Wake Up and The Well and The Lighthouse during soundcheck. Fucking A-MA-ZING. I almost busted out my camera but that would be cheating and would've gotten me tossed in two seconds flat, so I left Andrea's ticket at will call, hung out in the back with Porter and Pyles for a few. I am a total dork but jesus was that awesome. The sound in there is gonna be killer. I'm shaking like those women in the old Elvis concert videos.
Also, if you're going to the show, I understand that cameras will be allowed, but no flash after the third song. See you tonight!!!

Arcade Fire: Opening Act & Set Times for Tonight
I'm reposting this info for all those last minute Googles I'm getting....
I just got word that the set times are as follows:
Cass McCombs 7:30
Arcade Fire 9:00
I hope my source is wrong, but he's working the show, so he should know.
Also, if you are a friend of mine (or you are just really nice) and you have extra tickets for tonight that you plan on selling, please consider trading with me for my crap balcony seats and then you can sell those. There is no incentive to do this other than one friend helping another, but I would be forever grateful.
Thank you.
Also, here is my blog from yesterday:
The opening act for The Arcade Fire at Spreckels tomorrow is Cass McCombs.
Check out this blog for some insight.

National High Five Day & Arcade Fire Countdown
MySpace bulletins are down. I went out to the Sports Club last night, arrived at 10, and missed the Sky Drops, so I left. There is just not a whole lot to talk about today.
But it is...
But it is...
One week away...

Arcade Fire: San Diego, April 26, Spreckels- Still On!
Here's a message from Win Butler regarding his recent sinus surgery and recovery, posted on the band's website:
Hi!
Just wanted to let you all know that the serjery was successful and
I am recovering nicely. That you for all of your thoughts and emails...
I will probably start singing again this week some time and try to get ready for
the shows in North America.
It has been a blessing in disguise to stay
home and read, and sleep (pick up Cormac Mcarthy's "The Road" if you are feeling
like a little post apocalypse...don't let the Oprah Book Club Sticker scare you
away)...Regine and I have even started working on some new songs...
anyway see you all soon
luv
Win

Tuesday Newsy Bits: The Sess get a label, Arcade Fire, Absynthe Minded
You probably know Action Jackson from the great shows he puts on at Scolari's, The Ché Café. and occassionally other venues like the Ken Club. Or maybe you know him for his band The Vision of A Dying World. Now you can add label owner to his credentials. Craig of the Powerchords and Jackson are starting a label called Single Screen Records. The first album they put out will be from local boys The Sess. Jackson says they will focus mostly on the San Diego market in both bands and promotion, booking and sales.

Bad news from Arcade Fire. This is the letter posted by Win on the band's website:
Hello Friends,
I am backstage at the venue in Oslo and I just had to make the very sad decision to cancel the rest of the European tour. I have been suffering from a sinus and bronchial infection for the last 3 months, and last night in Stockholm I finally pushed my voice and body farther than they are able to go. Last night I kept yelling at the monitor guy because I didn't recognize the sound that was coming out of the monitor as my own voice, and it took me until the second song to realize that the sound was coming from me. Today I can barely speak, or make any sound, so finishing the shows is no longer possible.
I have had several doctors advise me to cancel shows weeks ago, and I have been trying to push through, but for my own health and safety I need to have sinus surgery so I can get better and start the recovery process. We are all very sad, because we were very much looking forward to playing these shows, and we could not imagine cancelling a show unless it was physically impossible to do. We apologize to the fans that have been waiting to see us, and we promise to try and come back as soon as it is humanly possible...
We would like to thank everyone who has been coming to the shows, and the outpouring of love and support for our music that we have felt. Wish me luck with the doctors,
And see you soon
luv,
Win
There is no other information, but as yet, no American dates have been cancelled. And let's hope that none of the dates are dropped.

Not that this really clears anything up, but Dinosaur Jr. is reuniting but when they start the tour at the Casbah, the show is listed as J Mascis and Friends. The Casbah newsletter says "May 10th you might as well call it Dinosaur Jr, but it is listed as J Mascis and Friends! Although all shows billed immediately after the Casbah show are listed as Dinosaur Jr..." Um, thanks for clarifying.

I never make a big deal about MySpace friend requests from bands. I listen and sample the music, and approve or deny based brashly based on how I feel about a song in the first 20 or 30 seconds. Today I got a request from a band called Absynthe Minded from Belgium that I am really digging. You might, too. Check them out here. Vocally, they kinda remind me of Midlake. They're signed to Universal in Belgium.

Some of today's new releases:
Kaiser Chiefs- Yours Truly, Angry Mobsters
John Butler Trio- Grand National
Kate Havenevik- Melankton (good for fans of Imogen Heap)
Grant Lee Phillips- Strangelet (playing at the Belly Up April 23)
The Klaxons- Myths of the Near Future

Black Wax is putting together a compilation CD of local San Diego music. Here's the blog about it:
We are currently working on a local music compilation that will be available at Black Wax in El Cajon, Ca along with other suppliers! The CD will be available in about 2 months and will feature a variety of different musical tastes! It will be co-sponsored by local music supporting companies and bands! The CD will be most likely free but if not then it will be dirt cheap. We are working out all the details now and will soon have more info and updates including the names of some of the bands featured on the compilation! If you are a band or company that would like to co-sponsor this project then just send us a message and let us know! The more sponsors, the more copies of the CD can be made and distributed. So all of you music fans and local music supporters keep your eyes and eyes open for updates and you can anticipate an amazing compilation of music!
That's a lot of! Exclamation Points! But if you're interested in contacting them, click here for the MySpace page.

Sunday Newsy Bits
Theres an article in Sunday's U-T about Humphrey's choosing Viejas Entertaiment to book their summer season. Along with the article, you can see most of the summer season concerts and dates. Check it out here. Personally, I like seeing shows at Humphrey's, but the cheapest ticket for any of the shows is $35. I'm glad I got the chance to see Lyle Lovett a few years back because his tickets are priced at $125. Maybe my recommendation is to rent a kayak and hang out in the water.

My friend Dave has some pretty funny "sound guy rantings" on his MySpace page. You should check them out, he might be talking about your band. Ok, not really any specific band but that advice is good. You might learn something. Dave does sound at several venues including the Ken Club and 710. He also told me about a little spot in PB called Tropicoso. The owner believes in paying the talent, so if you're a band whining that you have to charge your own cover at the Ken, check out playing places outta your comfort zone. Tropicoso even pays the people who play their open mic night! Seriously, it might be worth checking out.
*****
That's really all I've got today. Win Butler is sick and the Arcade Fire have cancelled 9 gigs on their European Tour, so let's send our energy to the cosmos and gets well soon. For me, this is the most I've anticipated a show since I was 14 and couldn't wait to see Blur at the Backdoor at SDSU.

Thursday Ramblings
You know what's even better than seeing "Arcade Fire" listed on the marquee on my way in to the office? Seeing it on my way home:

*****
If you missed the pre-sale (like I did), just a note that tickets for Damien Rice (Spreckels, 5/1) go on sale officially tomorrow at 10 am. Also onsale tomorrow- tickets for Regina Spektor. Also, on-sale Saturday, The Shins are playing Soma April 12. Screw you scalper bastards!
*****
I'm a huge fan of Google alerts ever since Troy turned me on to them. If you're not familiar, you basically set search terms and anytime something hits on the web, you get an e-mail with relevant links to those search parameters. One of my searches is "Coachella", so in addition to anything related to the festival, I get any article about news in the Coachella Valley. I just thought I would point out that yesterday I got one about high school soccer and I was kinda stunned to see that Coachella Valley High School is "Home of the Arabs". sheesh. And people had a problem with the Aztecs?

*****
If you're a Kaiser Chiefs fan, the new album will be released 3.27.07, but you can sneak peak the first single by clicking here for the e-card.

I've been loving this song lately and I think you will, too.

Arcade Fire: San Diego, April 26, Spreckels
Just hoping that by sharing this info, a little good karma will come my way and I'll end up with good seats for Arcade Fire, but just wanted to share that tickets go onsale on Saturday at 10 am. I was going to go to the box office, however it is not open until NOON. Save the gas and suck up the service charges and buy them online. I have not been able to find out the per ticket cost, so if you have info, cough it up.

Arcade Fire: San Diego, April 26, Spreckels
UPDATE!!! From The Casbah site: Thurs Apr 26, The Arcade Fire and guests @ Spreckels Theatre 7pm All Ages Tickets on sale Sat Feb 24 at noon at all Ticketmaster outlets, Spreckels box office, and ticketmaster.com
Arcade Fire have announced tour dates and San Diego is the first stop on April 26. I just walked over to Spreckels and there is as yet, no onsale date. "The show isn't even confirmed," says the guy behind the counter.
If I'm not within the first 6 rows I will be sad. If I don't get tickets I will mug someone. Seriously.
If there is no band opening, might I suggest San Diego locals, Swim Party? They'd be a perfect fit.
Cool video, bad sound.
