Win Tickets To The Subways at Casbah! (Monday Night)
The Subways are coming to the Casbah on Monday night, May 2nd, and my whole weekend has been non-stop chaotic and this was supposed to post yesterday, but it didn't so here it is. Leave a comment with your contact email if you wanna check out the show. I won't actually publish your info, but I'll email you if you're the winner. Who are the Subways? Full press release below.
THE SUBWAYS, perhaps best known by American audiences for their modern rock radio smash "Rock & Roll Queen", will return to the U.S. for a much-anticipated North American tour, their first since 2008. The band will be on the road supporting their new self-titled album, which is set for a US/Canadian release on April 16, 2016 (Record Store Day) via BODAN KUMA Recordings.
The album has been described as "near-perfect, punk-spirited noise" (KERRANG!) and "on par with the best things they have ever written... and finds the band energized, focused and battle-ready"
(Q MAGAZINE).
Billy Lunn, The Subways lead singer and guitarist, notes the new self-titled fourth album is, “100% The Subways, it’s all us, we wrote, produced, and mixed the album ourselves.“

Win Tickets to Jack Daniel's Live At The Landmark!
Jack Daniel's is already one of my favorite brands for all they do for music...I mean, as the main sponsor of SoundDiego, SoundDiego Live and SoundDiego TV, they kinda keep my freelancing wheels rolling, but aside from that, I like to throw back some Tennessee whiskey every now and again, too. They've initiated a new series called "Live at the Landmark", where they host great bands at American landmarks across the country, including the Playboy Mansion in L.A., St. Louis' Gateway Arch, Grand Central Terminal in NYC, and Pearl Stable in San Antonio, Texas.
Why YOU should care about this is that the series lands here in San Diego aboard the USS Midway this Sunday, April 14. Tickets were free and given as a lottery among registrants, but that has since closed, so I may be your only hope. I am being overnighted 5 pairs (maybe 10 pairs) of tickets to the event. Since so many of you thought I was the 91X Ticket Thief and were tracking my moves, once I have the tickets in hand, I will announce via Twitter, Facebook, and here on this site that I have them. You will have to track me down through my check-ins...could be at The Evens at the Irenic, could be at M-Theory, a park, a taco shop, the Casbah, or any of my other many haunts and just ask for them. I'll keep you updated as long as I have them. Anyway, stay tuned!
The U.S.S. Midway’s working days are behind her now. No longer does she patrol the seas protecting the great American ideals of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. She is now a floating landmark, a living museum dedicated to veterans everywhere. On April 14th, Jack Daniel’s second Live at The Landmark concert will be live on the Midway and benefitting the U.S.S. Midway Museum. For 21 years, the roar of her flight deck has not been heard, but on April 14th, the roar will return.

CSS at 4th & B October 7: Win Tickets Before You Can Buy Them!!

Earlier this week, 4th & B announced a show with CSS (Cansei de Ser Sexy) and Men taking place on October 7. Well, sometimes I'm people who know people, and 4th & B generously sent me TEN tickets to giveaway before you can even buy the tickets tomorrow. It's been awhile since the Brazilian crew has been back to San Diego; if I'm not mistaken they canceled their last show because of visa issues or something of the sort.
Earlier this week, CSS did a remix of one of my favorite new artists, Givers. Check out the remix of "Up, Up, Up" here
I don't want to just give these away willy-nilly, so you're gonna have to work for them. Using your Facebook or Twitter account, you have to plug the show in your own creative way. Be sure to tag @sddialedin & @4thandB on Twitter or Rosemary Bystrak & 4th&B on Facebook. I'll give away THREE pairs through this method, so you have about 24 hours and I'll name winners from all the entries.
For the other TWO pair, I'm going to at least three shows tonight, two shows tomorrow, and who knows how many over the weekend. Follow me on Foursquare (which also updates my Twitter and Facebook), find me and tell me you want CSS tickets and I'll take your name and phone number and choose winners at the end of the weekend. So technically it's not before you can buy them, but close enough. Keep in mind that 4th&B is a 21+ venue. I can't believe I'm inviting you to stalk me. Don't be a weirdo, mmkay?
If you don't wanna take your chances that this sells out, you can buy tickets starting on Friday. Click here for info.

Tonight: Win Tickets To The New Regime & Love Grenades at the Casbah

You might imagine that the printed Casbah calendars hanging around the bar get printed at the end of the previous month, and we hate having to print empty days...they just don't happen very often. Fortunately we have Tim Pyles to lean on to pull together a killer lineup. Tonight he was able to bring together The New Regime feat. Ilan Rubin, our local boy done good who toured as a member of Nine Inch Nails and Love Grenades, an LA band with dance beats and a sultry female vocalist. The Tender Box and Scott Mellis round out the bill.
The New Regime is offering up a spot on their list (with your guest, of course), and since I've been up all night clearing email, today you can enter the contest by leaving a comment on my Facebook Page Wall that you want to go to the show. I'll pick a random winner this afternoon.

Jeff's Weekly Pick: Black Mountain @ Belly Up Tuesday November 23, 2010
As Thanksgiving week has arrived, feasting with family and friends takes center stage. Many have lighter than normal work schedules, thus freeing up the night time for some live music. San Diego delivers in a big way this Tuesday when Vancouver based hard rocking band Black Mountain descends into North County's premium venue. The five piece group headed by Stephen McBean recently released its third full length, Wilderness Heart. Dark, trippy and psychedelic are adjectives which have been used to described Black Mountain's sound. All I know is the music is very reminiscent of hard progressive rock which could be heard in the 70's. The band is able to put its own stamp on the songwriting, which truly gives the songs a modern feel. It is hard not to be pulled in, especially during the live performance. This is a collective of musicians that knows where they are coming from, and appear to have a firm grasp on their destination. Be a part of the voyage when Black Mountain stops at the Belly Up this Tuesday. It will make that turkey dinner taste so much better. We have THREE pairs of tickets to give out. Send an email to sddialedin AT gmail with your first and last name and we'll notify you Monday night if you're a winner.
Black Angels set the stage.

Contest 2: Dawes Prize Pack & Concert Tickets
A couple weeks ago I posted my first contest for Dawes. Last night, I got an email from a friend thanking me for turning him on to the band and it remingded me that I have three more prize packs to give away. It includes the full length CD, a split 7" with Cory Chisel, and two tickets to the show.
If you're interested in seeing Dawes at the Casbah on 11/27 (and are 21+) and would like to enter to win, send me an email sddialedin (at) gmail with the subject "Dawes" and tell me why you wanna go, what song you can't wait to hear live, how you never get out because of your baby, what your Thanksgiving weekend plans are, whatever. Just no broke hard luck stories. Contest entries roll into the next giveaway, too, so you have more chances to win. I'll run this one through Sunday. Winner will be contacted on Monday.
I'm gonna repost this video because I got the best comment on YouTube. It said, "i cried the first time i heard this... amazing...and i'm a grown man!"
I hope this song has the same effect with you.

Contest: Dawes Prize Pack
You can officially consider me obsessed. It started with a simple listen to Dawes' CD and then there was that day earlier this year when I caught three of the four members on a KPRi private listener show on the Hornblower. I've been blogging here for nearly four years and I really didn't get a camera until a couple years ago, but in that time I've uploaded over 1300 videos to YouTube, and honestly I don't think there are any of my videos I've watched any more than I've watched those of Dawes. It was an incredibly beautiful San Diego day, and the stripped down nature of the performance made it one of my favorite private listener shows of the year, if not all time.
All of that said, I'm laptopping in bed as I slowly start my day, and I've got the band's CD playing and thought it was time to hook you up. The band is signed to ATO Records and the label was kind enough to send me some freebies to share. The band will be setting out on tour with their final night of tour at the Casbah on November 27, so I'm gonna offer the first of my prize packages this week. You'll get the band's full-length CD, North Hills, a 7" vinyl that has a live version of "When My Time Comes" (split with a live version of "In The Deep End" by Cory Chisel & The Wandering Sons), and a pair of tickets to their show at the Casbah (21+). To enter, shoot me an email (sddialedin at gmail) with "Dawes" as the subject (include first and last name and a phone number) and tell me your favorite song from the video playlist. Or tell me why you wanna see Dawes. Or tell me how much you love me. Or tell me about your hometown. Or tell me about your dog. Whatever...just no sob stories about how broke you are and how you can't afford the $12 advance cover charge because those are the lamest and I'll just delete them. You can buy tickets here if you're not a winner. I'll close this one on Friday, but stay tuned because I have three more identical packages to offer leading up to the show and all entries will be considered, so if you don't win, your entry will roll over into the next contest.

Contest: Art Brut @ Casbah, 10.28.09
Art Brut return to the Casbah this Wednesday night in support of their latest release, Art Brut vs Satan. The record and tour are getting rave reviews and you can read and see some of that if you 'keep on reading', but the bigger point of this post is to tell you that I have a pair of tickets to giveaway. Shoot me an email with subject "Art Brut". Include your name and phone number. Must be 21+ to enter. I'll select a winner Tuesday evening. Princeton and Northern Towns, two awesome bands in their own right, will open the show.

NPR : “Art Brut vs. Satan, Argos goes back to what he knows. When a song titled "The Replacements" appears, it's already the third of four consecutive tracks about rock 'n' roll itself. There are only two cuts about love, and soon enough, one of those ("What a Rush") moves on to the subject of music, too”
“Argos doesn't claim to live clean. Art Brut vs. Satan begins with one called "Alcoholics Unanimous" and ends with one called "Mysterious Bruises," keyed to the wonderful line, "I fought the floor and the floor won." But there are also several songs about being young and poor — or, in the case of the one called "DC Comics and Chocolate Milkshake," being 28 and still eating nothing but cereal.”
Pitchfork : “If they can't topple vague, pasty, barely breathing background rock from the charts, at least they can sing gloriously doomed songs about it.”
“Argos proclaims: "I fought the floor and the floor won." Satan always wins. The beautiful people and their sycophants will always outnumber lovable losers. But this is a record I like.”
Alternative Press : (**** 4 Stars ) “British indie outfit regain their charm/snark balance. Art Brut Vs. Satan is compelling for three crucial reasons. First, Black Francis—a guy who knows something about charging guitar rock—produced the sessions. Second: The guitar subterfuge of Jasper Future and Ian Catskilkin (the only good components to 2008’s rather dismal It’s A Bit Complicated), drive home these songs with a renewed enthusiasm. Lastly, frontman Eddie Argos’ sing-speak ruminations are inspired once again, whether he’s reminiscing about his youth (“D.C. Comics And Chocolate Milkshake”) or riffing on his allergy medications as on the loose jam “Mysterious Bruises.” His delivery is open-ended enough to confuse his intention (sincere? snarky?), which was the very reason their debut, Bang! Bang! Rock ’N’ Roll, was so engaging. With luck, “one Zyrtec, two Advil and a drink” will replace “that’s what she said” as 2009’s catchphrase of choice. “ Jason Pettigrew
Spin : “In a world where nothing is a metaphor, singer Argos still just digs "DC Comics and Chocolate Milkshakes," "The Replacements," and records that are "Slap Dash for No Cash." And as long as he does, the band behind him will give him three chords and a wink.”
Rolling Stone : “On Art Brut's third album, Argos is in his usual form, waxing wittily about suspended adolescence, hangovers and, in "Slap Dash for No Cash," hack musicians: "Why is everyone trying to sound like U2?/It's not a very cool thing to do."”
Billboard : “The English rock act Art Brut has established itself as the class clown of the indie scene, creating lightweight punk songs with a sarcastic edge.” “The seven-minute closer, "Mysterious Bruises," is Art Brut's most ambitious song to date, but a funky guitar hook and thoughtful lyrics make it a highlight.”

Contest: The Low Anthem & Blind Pilot at Casbah, 10.
This Saturday night at the Casbah, The Low Anthem will be playing their first show in San Diego along with Blind Pilot. I was late on the boat, but when I first heard the record I was instantly intrigued and was happy to see that they were coming to San Diego, and especially because I saw Blind Pilot open for Gomez earlier this year and they’re phenomenal. If YOU would like to see just how great both bands are for yourself, I have a pair of tickets (will call) to give away for the show. Being that the show is at the Casbah, this is a 21+ offer. E-mail me with your full name and phone number and I will randomly select a winner on Thursday.
If you're not in San Diego, catch them in your city. Tour dates if you 'keep on reading'.

The Low Anthem has been touring for the larger part of the year behind their Nonesuch debut, Oh My God, Charlie Darwin, performing with Joe Pug, Ray Lamontagne, Josh Ritter and Elvis Perkins in Dearland among others. After hitting the summer festival circuit with performances at Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, Glastonbury, and ACL among others, the band will return to the road once again to finish out the year. Among the 27 instruments featured on the album (all ferried over to Block Island, RI in the process) are zither, pump organ, Tibetan singing bowl, and an oil drum.
"stately...lyrics contemplating faith, loss, destruction and self-destruction." - New York Times
"stunning...they deserve everything said about them." - BBC
"At times languid and haunting, but with detours into Tom Waits-esque stomping and hollering, The Low Anthem's music seems equally informed by Simon & Garfunkel, Bob Dylan, The Band and a late-night ride home in Joni Mitchell's car." - NPR

Contest: See Bad Veins & Division Day At Casbah, 9.1.09
You'd think that after spending an entire day listening to Bad Veins and Division Day CDs, I would have more to say than just, "I Love These Bands" but I really don't. I mean, I listen to Bad Veins and there's a little bit of me that thinks of Will Sheff of Okkervil River and then the very next song makes me wonder how I ever made that connection in the first place. Then I listen to Division Day and think, "this is how Great Northern would sound if the vocals were all male," and all these things are good and dandy but don't do any justice to describing the amazing music and how great I expect their show at the Casbah to be on 9/1...next Tuesday...
And it's not enough to say they're both Dangerbird bands, though for me that carries enough weight with artists like Silversun Pickups and Eulogies coming from the same L.A. indie label. All I can say is that I hope San Diego represents at this show because it is gonna be great. Poor Division Day got to play NPMT, and from what I heard, playing Bar Pink in the last slot was a blessing and a curse because while the room was full, at that time of night nobody gave them proper respect...so here's our chance to redeem ourselves and show up and support the amazing bands.
Bad Veins is a Cincinnati based duo and cute as hell. Not that it matters, but sometimes it helps.

Here's a video from Division Day:
Because I love Dangerbird so much and harass the shit out of them, they've agreed to give away a pair of tickets to the show. E-mail me with "Dangerbird" as the subject, include your phone number, and I'll pick a winner over the weekend. I wish I was joking that I spent the entire day switching these two albums back and forth in my CD player (I still prefer a stereo over iPod for listening to albums) but it's true...which I think means I listened to each about 5 times. Do not miss this show.

Crystal Method Feat. Matisyahu "Drown In The Now"
I'm posting this video because it covers two fronts. As you know, Matisyahu is headlining StayClassy.org's Elemental Experience on May 2 at Mission Bay Park (Click banner above for more information). But it is also worth noting that Crystal Method is performing at House of Blues on May 25. Their new record, Divided By Night, drops on May 12 and features collaborations with Matisyahu, Peter Hook (Joy Division, New Order), Samantha Maloney (Hole, Peaches), Jason Lytle (Grandaddy), Emily Haines (Metric), Meiko, Justin Warfield (She Wants Revenge) and LMFAO.
It's no secret that I'm not much into the club/dance/DJ scene, but I saw Crystal Method a while back at 4th & B and was blown away. I remember ordering a drink, and by the time I found the money in my wallet and handed it to the bartender, my drink had disappeared. What we figured out was that the thumping bass literally bounced my drink off the bar and into the adjacent trash can. Needless to say, earplugs are recommended.

Motley Crue Giveaway
In catching up with e-mail and realizing that there's a whole bunch of good stuff to come in 2009, even when the Casbah anniversary month ends, I thought it was time to start looking to February. With shows like The Bird and The Bee and Obi Best at the Casbah to bands like Dead Confederate and Devotchka at the Belly Up, it's clear that bands are back on the road again gearing up for SXSW or festivals or just taking advantage that gas prices are back under control (for now, anyway).
One band hitting the road and making their way to San Diego is Motley Crue. They'll be at SDSU's Cox Arena on Monday, February 2nd with Hinder, Theory of A Deadman and The Last Vegas. While I unfortunately don't have tickets, I do have some Crue swag on it's way. If you'd like to enter, tell me any Motley Crue story (tkeep them factual) and I'll choose two winners. Tell me how you got in trouble for sneaking out to go catch them live, they were your first record, that you dressed like them for halloween, whatever. I'll choose the winners at random.
The first place winner will receive a pick guard signed by the band.
The second place winner will receive paperback copies of their New York Times bestseller, The Dirt and Heroin Diaries paperback and Saints of Los Angeles on CD.
Send submissions to sddialedin via gmail. Include a contact number so I can notify the winners.
