San Diego: Dialed In Presents The Burning of Rome, Judgement Day, BATTLEHOOCH & Boyscout, March 13, Soda Bar

Of all the things I love about music, promoting shows isn't one of them. I've booked a couple shows over the past few years, and at one point I thought it was something I wanted to do, but I've learned it's not a direction I really want to go on a consistent basis. I'm only telling you this so that you know that when I do book a show, it has to really stand out to me. When Anton of Judgement Day asked if I could help out with a San Diego show, I couldn't say no.

I remember the first time I saw Judgement Day. I was at the Casbah to take photos of Margot & The Nuclear So and So's. Judgement Day was about to take the stage and I was at the bar talking to Ben Johnson. The band started and we looked at each other and then to the stage with our jaws dropped. "This is the shit I like. When people ask me what I like, this is exactly what I want to see." Ben's been the bar manager for several years and seen hundreds if not thousands of shows, so his strong reaction to the band left an impression on me, but so did this band onstage.

Brothers Anton (violin) & Lewis (cello) Patzner, after the release of Dark Opus, the "string metal" band took a hiatus from recording so Anton could tour with Bright Eyes and Lewis could enter the Peabody Conservatory. They've played some dates, including a couple tours with Torche & Dredg. They rejoined their drummer Jon Bush and have recorded Peacocks/Pink Monsters, which will be release April 13.

Last week they headlined Noisepop! in San Francisco, and this week, it is my honor to host them at Soda Bar as they hit the west coast on their way to SXSW.

Joining the band on tour is BATTLEHOOCH from S.F.and rounding out the show, I called upon two San Diego bands that should make for a stellar night, Boyscout and The Burning of Rome.

Amenity- You Can't Stop The Show

Last summer, I had the privilege to be involved with Amenity's reunion. The Chula Vista hardcore band was stuff of legend for those of us who grew up in the South Bay, and while I had my share of hardcore shows and saw House of Suffering numerous times, I only ever got to see Amenity once back in the day.

I was thrilled when they reached out to me to help spread the word about "Shine", participate in the song's video release party at East Village Tavern & Bowl, and to be involved with anything Mike Down was doing. When you meet Mike, it is hard not to share the enthusiasm he has for music, for San Diego, and for life in general. When they asked me if I wanted to go on a roadtrip with the band to the Bay Area, it was an offer I couldn't refuse.

We piled in a couple cars and took a crew of old San Diego friends who all had some part of the hardcore scene back then. I drove with Mike, Delmar, and his daughter Americka, who was born just around the time Amenity played their last show. Tim drove a van with a bunch of other people, Alex, Beau, Hajj and others and we took the drive. It was a really amazing few days, and definitely more about the journey than the 30 minute set the band played at Gilman Street. We stayed a night on the floor of a big empty house one night, staying up all night sharing stories of the past, and the next night stayed with Eddie, and old friend from the scene who shared his beautiful home and family with a house full of people he probably hadn't seen in nearly two decades.




In the time after that trip, the band recorded four songs and were supposed to headline a Chula Vista Hardcore show at the MAAC center. At the last minute and after several of the bands played, Amenity pulled out of the show, and while apologetic, they never gave a full explanation of what happened. Some things just aren't worth airing publicly. The truth is that any band reuniting after nearly twenty years may not necessarily share the same vision.

Not satisfied with just the verbal and written apologies given to the eager kids that were let down that day, Mike Down and Tim Gonzales did what they know best. They took pen to paper and collaborated on a song, along with some spoken word from Hajj and Sergio Vega of the Deftones, they've put together a song.

The Soundtrack of Our Lives & Nico Vega, Casbah, 2.24.10

The Casbah seems to have been especially international of late. Aside from the usual Brit bands, in the last few months it seems like there've been a higher concentration of bands making their way from Finland, Russia, Sweden, and Norway to name a few. When shows like that happen, you discover that San Diego has a diverse population and they come out to support their homeland heroes.

Such was the case on Wednesday night, when Sweden's The Soundtrack of Our Lives took the stage. I don't think I've seen so many natural blondes in one room in a very long time. Openers Nico Vega and The Loons both gave stunning performances as well, though admittedly I got caught up in Olympic fever as everyone huddled around the back bar to watch Sweden's hockey game. It was a really fun night full of boozy hugs with strangers. After the show I got to talking to the singer about the hockey game..."sorry your boys couldn't pull through," to which he responded with a grumble and an "it's alright, Love," then grabbed my face and apparently tried to suck it off. The Swedish are a friendly people, aren't they?

The Rumble Is Back: March Edition

This month, The Rumble is back at it's permanent home, Bar Pink, with three outstanding bands that should be on your radar if they're not already. The show is this Saturday night and as always, the show is free.

This month featuring San Diego’s BEATERS before they take off on a national tour with The Soft Pack — and two out of towners: TWIN TIGERS – an Athens, GA, Old Flame-signed foursome that make shoegaze swirling, straight-up rock and roll that’s far from forgettable and BIRDS AND BATTERIES- A lo-fi, synth-soaked foursome that have managed to evoke equal parts Radiohead, John Carpenter’s 80’s OST work and some Parliament funkiness for good measure.

Once again, San Diego gets the gift of free music with this outstanding series. Check it out, but get there early as everyone now knows that a line out the door of Bar Pink is just par for the course on a Saturday night these days.

Jeff's Weekly Pick: The Clientele @ The Casbah March 4, 2010

Mark your calendar for Thursday March 4 when underrated pop songsmiths The Clientele play The Casbah. The London based 4-piece is known for their melancholy brand of 60’s style pop music. Alasdair MacLean’s breathy lead vocals draw the listener in to their dream world. The addition of Mel Draisey as a backing vocalist and violinist/keyboardist reinforces their sound which is a very good thing.

The Clientele’s fourth release Bonfires on the Heath is as rewarding a listen as any of their previous efforts. It is comforting to know this is a band that delivers their brand of pop as well as anyone on the current indie scene.

The Wooden Birds set the stage.

Sunday: Benefit for Kiko Cornejo & Andy Esparza

Longtime San Diego Latin Jazz band Storm & its leaders timbalero/vibist Kiko Cornejo & bassist Andy Esparza will be honored at an all-ages tribute/benefit show on Sun., Feb. 28, 2010 from 6pm to 12am at The Sunset Temple in the neighborhood of North Park.

The Sunset Temple is located at 3911 Kansas St. San Diego, CA 92104 behind the Claire de Lune coffee house & live entertainment will be provided by Latin Jazz legend Jack “Mr. Bongo” Costanzo & His Orchestra featuring trumpeter Gilbert Castellanos, conguero Gene Perry’s Afro Rumba, guitarist Jose Molina Serrano’s Viva Santana, & Storm.

Kiko Cornejo has recently gone through health issues & Andy Esparza has also recently dealt with family health issues & a $15 minimum donation will benefit them & their families. Cornejo & Esparza are legends in the Latin music scene in San Diego & have played with greats like Cal Tjader, Tito Puente, Mongo Santamaria, Poncho Sanchez, Pete Escovedo, Santana, Malo, & Azteca through the years. The event will be hosted by local trumpeter Bill Caballero, promoter/dj/journalist Steve Kader, KSDS Jazz 88.3 Radio Host Chris Springer of the Latin Grooves Show, & local salsa/Latin jazz promoter Tommy Rosas of Latin Flavor Productions. DJs SK & Sachamo will also be spinning classic salsa & Latin jazz & many unannounced celebrity musician special guests will also be attending.
