NBC SoundDiego Session: Nortec Collective presents Bostich + Fussible

Last night I had the pleasure of hosting Nortec Collective's Bostich + Fussible in the NBC studios to film a couple songs for our SoundDiego Live collection. They were an incredibly friendly group of guys and it was certainly a cool thing to see them in a room with just a few camera guys and Tristan from Owl & Bear running sound. We shot two songs, but here's the first one released, called "Do It". Stay tuned for the follow up video which we'll roll out in a couple weeks.

Michael McGraw/ El Monte Slim/ The Black Swans @ Soda Bar- 01.13.11

After a prolonged trip back East for the holidays, it was good to return to SD for what is shaping up to be a great start to the live music scene in 2011. This year's show calendar started with a trip over to Soda Bar for a mellow evening with local acts Michael McGraw and El Monte Slim and a shorthanded The Black Swans, who were working their way west from their home base in Columbus, Ohio.

Singer/ songwriter Michael McGraw kicked off the evening joined by Chris Decatur on drums/ vox and Mark Lane on bass. Their set of what was apparently a mix of older and soon-to-be released tunes set the tone for the evening music-wise, though most of the sparse crowd made their way out the door after the openers finished up.

El Monte Slim followed up with their special brand of self-described 'wannabe country'. I had seen this duo open up for The White Buffalo a while back but unfortunately walked in about a song and a half before their night was over. This time around I was able to witness a full set and was not disappointed. Ian Trumbull's soothing vocals worked in perfect harmony with his guitar and Joe Camacho's pedal steel as they made their way through a proper set. The pedal steel did lend a certain 'good ol' boy' feel, but without the overbearing twang all too prominent in the majority of country music.

The Black Swans took the stage as a pared-down duo of Jerry DiCicca on vocals/ acoustic guitar/ harmonica and Tyler Evans on guitar/ banjo/electric lap steel. Touring as a follow up to last autumn's split 45" album they released with Bonnie 'Prince' Billy, the duo eased into their set with DiCacca's distinct delivery, Evans' impressive skill set, tales of crossing the AZ/CA border checkpoint and a pseudo-reunion with a fellow midwesterner who turned out to be a friend of a friend of a friend of the band. Small world. Though the floor was all but empty at this point and I had free reign to wander as I pleased, The Black Swans' music lends itself much more to sitting at a table by yourself as you ruminate on a bad break up, think of your sick grandmother or cycle through life's intricacies while staring blankly into another empty beer bottle. It takes a special talent to generate that type of emotional reaction and they do it with impressive ease.

NAMM 2011: Jesse LaMonaca at Luna Guitars

Sometimes life is about being in the right place at the right time. When I met some guys at a True Blood party at Comic-con 2009, a friendship was sprung that has lasted over time and some of my best times ever are from hanging with them at the Con. Last year they told me about a company they were developing and over time they wanted to pick my brain about some things. I had forgotten about the conversation until last week, when a group of us were at the Everest show at the Belly Up. We had a cocktail party before and had try to convince Jesse LaMonaca to come to the show; as it turned out his buddy had an extra ticket. We were all enjoying the show when I got a text from Jared asking if I wanted to come to NAMM and I was welcome to bring a guest. By the time the night was through, plans solidified, and by Friday morning, Jesse and I were driving up to Anaheim. After a few hours at the convention center, I stepped outside and got to chatting with a man who turned out to be an artist rep for Luna Guitars. I shared what I do with him and mentioned Jesse. Long story short, we were asked to come back by and take a look at some guitars, which turned into an impromptu performance at the Luna booth. Jesse and Brandon played two songs. Here is one of them.

For Justin Jay

Justin Jay's passing last week was a shock for everyone. The autopsy came back and Justin died from Bacterial Meningitis, which caused a seizure and killed him instantly. Justin had been experiencing a headache and a fever. Anyone experiencing similar symptoms urgently need to be tested.

There have been talks about a benefit and now one has been confirmed. The Casbah show on January 21st was already in place on the calendar, but the show will now be a tribute and memorial for Justin. The show features Transfer, New Mexico, and d/wolves. Doors will open early at 7:30pm with the first band starting at 8:30. The show is $14 in advance or $15 the night of the show. Get your tickets here. When the show ends around 11:30, there will be a dance party. It's included in the ticket price, or you'll be able to come in after Transfer for $5 (based on space and capacity), with proceeds going to Justin's family to defray expenses.

NAMM 2011: Lisa Loeb Live

Today I got back from NAMM and have some things I wanted to share with you from the weekend and now that I'm back with reliable wi-fi, I can upload everything with ease. Lisa Loeb mentioned that she's been working on a new record with Chad Gilbert of New Found Glory. This is one of the new songs, though the title escapes me. I got there just as she started, so of her four songs, I filmed three, missing out on capturing "Wishing Heart".



If you know me at all or have ever been to my house at 3 in the morning, you know that Reality Bites is my all-time favorite movie. I have it on DVD and pretty much watch it all the time, and though I'm generally terrible with movie quotes, I can basically recite the entire script. On Thursday night I heard "Stay" at the West Coast Tavern party and it was thrown over a dance beat and I tweeted about it. The next day, I'm walking around NAMM and came across the schedule of performances at the Alfred/Daisy Rock stage and saw that Lisa was performing. Naturally, my next tweet was "OMG!:" The funny thing about that movie is that little references always appear...having a long talk with Jesse about our paths and "You and me and five bucks" comes to mind, or while having cocktails on Friday night, our friend tells us that we missed Peter Frampton or stopping off at a 7-eleven to pick up "the most profound, important invention of my lifetime...the Big Gulp." Anyway, of course Lisa indulged us.

Naturally this was an incredible way to kick off my first NAMM experience. Little did I know what the weekend had in store for me.

According to my friend Justin, "Daft Punk released 12 tracks throughout the recording process for the Tron soundtrack which were rejected by Disney, and for legal reasons, could never be released under their name. These 12 tracks have been made available to the public under the pseudonym The Third Twin (TTT), who have also been confirmed to play Spain's Arenal Sound Festy in August..."

This Friday at The Loft (@ 8:30pm) we will be graced with none other than the mighty Baths. His album Cerulean was on my top 10 list of 2010 and on repeat in my mind for the better half of the year. His ability to blend electronic textures with stuttering beats, ghostly choirs and lush melodies is enough to make a grown man cry...in a good way! Overdue Recap: KCRW & Invisible Children Benefit feat. Middle Brother, Mountain Man, more

A few weeks ago, Jeff and I ventured up to LA to catch the KCRW benefit for San Diego based non-profit, Invisible Children, featuring Middle Brother. The band is made up of Taylor Goldsmith of Dawes, John McCauley of Deer Tick and Matthew Vasquez of Delta Spirit. They shared the night with some incredible performance by Mountain Man, Cass McCombs, Guards, Blake Mills and an acoustic set by John McCauley. It was a fantastic night of incredible music and it was such a pleasure to witness Middle Brother. Though it wasn't their first show ever, it was still a debut of sorts and I look forward to the supergroup's album which drops on March 1. R.I.P. Justin Jay

I'm not ready to write this. I had a crazy fun (sober) night doing things I never thought with a my new friends before Nima takes off on his Baja bike adventure. What started with a simple plan to work on his blog turned into several hours and several stops when we decided to finish things up at Gay Denny's at nearly 5am where I ran into Nick. I said hi and he somberly delivered horrible news. Justin Jay had passed away. I was buzzing from too much coffee and the high of the night's adventures and the words didn't really sink in. I still don't think they have. I still don't know what to say and as the sun begins to rise I feel completely numb.

You probably know Justin. His epic drumming in bands like Hialeah and Boyscout showed his talent, and seeing his face at the Casbah on any given night of the week after he'd get off work, belly up to the bar ordering his tall double sapphire and whatever, was always a pleasure. He worked for Bertrand's up until a couple weeks ago, and his late hours were such that it wasn't uncommon for me to get a midnight text asking if the bands were still on at the Casbah or if they were any good. I always greeted Justin with a big smacker right on the lips and the same for goodbyes and I always told him I loved him. He was just one of those people that everybody loved. Free-spirited but also intense, and if anything was ever wrong, you wouldn't know it because he'd either be smiling or just say, "Fuck it." On one particularly shitty night, I'd been wandering downtown and missed the last bus when Justin invited me up to the Turf Club. In a matter of minutes, my night went from complete shit to an absolute blast. That's how things always went with Justin.


There are so many amazing things to say about Justin but I just really feel like nothing I could write will do justice to someone so loved and so loving. The world will be a whole lot dimmer without Justin around. Sadly, a cause of death is unknown at this time. Apparently, he had been complaining about a sharp headache on Wednesday and that was the last anyone heard from him. After a few days (it wasn't uncommon to not hear from him), concerned friends forced entry to his apartment where they found him. There is no doubt that the Black Box and San Diego music community will honor Justin's life and I will post details of services as they become available.

I created a page for Justin at 1000Memories, if anyone would like to contribute and share. I posted more thoughts on Facebook, but if you'd like to read them and avoid the space of face, click 'keep on reading' below. Keep in mind, this was intended to be a completely stand alone post, so apologies that it doesn't quite flow from the rest of this post.

The Blessing/Curse of Social Media

Last year I had my first facebook birthday. I mean, I've been on facebook for some time now, along with twitter and myspace and the blog and all of it, but this year was the first year I experienced the happy birthday wall phenomenon of having nearly 200 messages from people wishing me a happy birthday. It's a very weird feeling. Do I thank everyone individually? Does the simplicity and ease of posting on a wall make it less of a wish than say, a phone call or a card or an email or a text message? It felt great to feel loved, but there's still a fuzzy weirdness about it...a dullness, if you will.

Today has me thinking about this because as I found out the news about Justin Jay this morning, at 5 am at a Denny's, no less, where I bumped into Nick who broke the news, I couldn't get through the shock. I wanted to cry but couldn't. I was thinking about it a bit with Stimy the past couple weeks, too. While I was immensely touched by Stimy's music, we didn't know each other on a personal level. What responsibility do I have as a local music blogger to write about his passing? Even harder, what right do I have to, in many cases, be the one publicly sharing information about someone I didn't know.

In this morning's case, however, I am a music blogger, true, but Justin was also a great friend. I loved that boy so much as did so many, but as everyone is stunned and shocked to hear of the news, how painful is it to find out such things on Facebook? Or on Twitter? Or on a blog? I posted a blog, then pulled it down in case family still needed notification, but seeing that the news was out, put it back up, still feeling like it is not my right to share such personal news but wanting to answer the emails and texts I'd already received. We write tributes, we make posts on the deceased's wall, posts that person will never see, but that the friends and family left behind will share and read and laugh about and cry about. We do these things to comfort ourselves and to comfort each other, but with this permanent documentation on the interwebs, are we softening the blow? We can still look at Justin's photos and feel like he's still here, still present, like we'll still see him at the next show ordering his double sapphire, or like we'll still get that midnight text wondering where the after party is gonna be, or the funny comments posted on our inane status updates. We're all brought together by this immense sadness, seeing just how deeply and widely this person touched so many, yet we're all apart, staring blankly at our computer screens, left to make sense of it in our own ways.

No doubt Justin will be missed and there is a huge hole in my heart and the hearts of many with such a sudden and unexpected loss. It's a blessing and a curse that the way will feel it together is on facebook.

The Long & Short of It, Retox, Grand Tarantula, Scales, Drug Wars @ Casbah, 1.7.2011

[While I was working the door at Brick By Brick for the TSOL show, Kyle Lynch was over at the Casbah dutifully taking notes to review the show. I also have to say, I'm pretty impressed that Justin Pearson and Gabe Serbian played Casbah when both were at Brick by Brick earlier in the nightm, and after Serbian absolutely killed it with Rats Eyes to open the show.- rosey]

THE LONG & SHORT OF IT, RETOX, GRAND TARANTULA, SCALES & DRUG WARS
CASBAH SAN DIEGO 1/7/11

This week was extremely trying, for lack of a better word it just plain sucked. I needed a release, a vehicle for my aggression, something to help me get back to my happy self. You know what? Casbah had just the cure, with a ballsy lineup of up and coming San Diego face melters and "a bunch of old dudes". Jason from Scales and I bobbed and weaved through traffic missing our exits and turns all the while Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti blared through the speakers. A couple of swigs out of a flask later we had arrived at Casbah. Hellos, handshakes and hugs exchanged with all the familiar faces, the crowd started to gather and the bustle and hum of the Casbah attendees was soon to be silenced.

Scales took the stage (they're first time there) with a vengeance, their signature mid 90's San Diego post-hardcore sound and amazing new drummer. They rip roared through their set, lead vocals being exchanged between Brett Flynn and Jason Kirk and their own personal dancer who we found out to be just a very excited fan! My personal fave "Pipes Broken" definitely got the peoples attention, but the brand spanking new "Ear To The Ground" was the one that won them over. I expect big things from this band in 2011! Set changeover, smoke break and more hellos.

Grand Tarantula takes the stage with I swear to be their own personal army, these fans were hungry! And they got exactly what they came for, Jordan Clark flailing about the stage wielding a megaphone with screams of a banshee! This band is pure, raw, unadulterated energy, they did not let up the entire set. They definitely left me wanting more, I am forever a fan of this band. Yes, people may call them pop rock, screamo or what have you but to me this band is just pure rock n roll! Go see them the next time they play and I dare you to not enjoy their set.

Now it's time to dart back to the Atari Lounge for Drug Wars! Hey look it's dancing guy again, yea alright - now it's a party! If you've seen Drug Wars you know the sound, 80's West Coast hardcore to the t. The set seriously screamed out bloody murder but everyone was so timid, if this would have been 1985 bottles would have been broken, people would've been punched, bodies would have been flying. The six song set absolutely killed, Tommy Garcia's blood curdling howl, Cory Stier's fantasic drumming, Farmer's shredding. Perfect. Smiles all around.

It's that time now, what everyone's been waiting for... the San Diego debut of RETOX comprised of Justin Pearson and Gabe Serbian from Locust fame with Michael Crain (Festival of Dead Deer). If you've listened to the EP (free download through ThreeOneG) you know the set would be short and sweet, I think it was around 10 minutes? Absolutely face melting, Gabe's drumming was IMPECCABLE the blast beats were outstanding, such high energy in that room! JP scanning the crowd like he wanted to murder someone. Download that EP and go see them the next time they play, you will thank me.

Drug Wars kill Atari for the second time, many more drinks and hellos exchanged. The Long And Short Of It take the stage and absolutely own it! Ben Johnson stalks the crowd like they are prey, fucking love seeing this band live! TLASOI bring the house down every time they play, their blend of hardcore and metal is perfect; by no means are they metalcore! Just pure fucking madness. This night was perfect and for all of the great shows going on in San Diego this evening, I'm thrilled I got to see this one! Thanks to Rosey for making it happen, big up's babydoll!

91X Celebrates 28 Years with a Resurrection Weekend

91X has seen its ups and downs over the years, with management changes and programming tweaks, the station known as "The Cutting Edge of Rock" that defined our formative years perhaps lost its way when they got sucked into the radio conglomerate, but the station has recently made efforts to get back from where they might've strayed and this weekend, they're bringing back many of the personalities that developed 91X. Obviously they can't have personalities like Cantore or Jen White who have found success at other stations around town, but they're bringing back some of our favorites, including Lou Niles' return to Loudspeaker on Sunday.

In advance of its 28th birthday on January 11, San Diego’s heritage alternative rock station 91X will celebrate with a “Resurrection Weekend,” bringing back many of the voices that have defined the station’s storied history.

Mike Halloran will return to the 91X studio to kick off the Resurrection Weekend tomorrow at 2:00 PM. Other former 91X DJ’s returning on-air include “Mad Max” Tolkoff, Billy Bones, Chris Muckley, and Dred Scott as well as current 91X DJ’s Robin Roth, Oz Medina and Steve West.
