Overdue Recap: Rumble Strips, Birdmonster, Royal Campaign @ Casbah

It's not out of the ordinary for me to check out a show at the Casbah two, three, even more times in a week. I'm a huge fan of the place, and the booking never disappoints. When I saw that Birdmonster were playing in San Diego again, I had to catch the show. I guess we're lucky that they tour here a lot, and that a couple of them grew up here, because I wouldn't want them to stop coming down as much as they do. I made sure to get there early because I've only seen Royal Campaign once before but I really like them a lot, too. The night didn't disappoint. Click 'keep on reading' for the full post.

I've been sitting on this post for two days, but honestly, I don't have much to say about the show. All three bands kicked ass. Royal Campaign got the night off to a great start. The funny thing is that I've only seen the band one other time a long while ago, but I recognized a couple of their songs, which I think says something about the killer vocals and crafty songwriting.

I had the chance to talk to David and Peter from Birdmonster for a bit before they played and they really are such nice guys. David's mom and grandmother were in attendance again, so I said hi to them, too. The set was stellar and the band's energy onstage, regardless of the size of the crowd, really is infectious. David never stops smiling, Justin rocks hard whether on keys or bass, and Peter on guitar has such a huge personality that comes out in his vocals and through his instrument.

I'd never heard The Rumble Strips before the show, but their set had me hooked from the beginning. They're songs are catchy and I guess I'd call them indie-pop. The vocals soared, and it was hard to look away from the singer's facial expressions. Add in the backing horns and the bassist grabbing the snare for a couple songs and beating the shit out of it, and it made for a completely engaging performance.
