Jeff's Weekly Pick: The Western States Motel @ Bar Pink Thursday December 9, 2010

A couple of years ago I heard of a band that was appearing @ Bar Pink in North Park. As a result I proceeded to listen to the songs posted on their Myspace page, piquing my interest level enough to make the trek to see the band perform live. Playing in front of a modest crowd they did not disappoint. Now it is two years later and I must profess I still know very little about the band. One thing I have known for these few years is their name: The Western States Motel, based in Los Angeles. The band is the brainchild of Carl Jordan, formed mainly to produce soundtracks to short films. An eponymous debut in 2007 featured great pop sensibilities and I was hooked. One song on that LP is titled I Won't Be Going Back to San Diego. Obviously, one can catch the indie band doing the exact opposite this Thursday. There will be a full group assembled for the live show. Also featured will be songs from an EP released in 2008, Painted Birds Flying in the Orange Mirror Sun. Sometimes the best kept secrets turn out to be the best shows. Hopefully this Thursday will be one of those times.

Maren Parusel sets the stage.
