Weekend Picks July 5-7, 2013

After celebrating July 4th with family, friends, food and fireworks, the quest for weekend activities begins. As for musical offerings in San Diego, I thought I would travel well below the radar in recommending some shows.

On Friday check out Chicago psych/garage rockers Outer Minds at Soda Bar...they recently dropped their sophomore release Behind the Mirror...

Seattle indie rockers The Purrs bring their version of psychedelic rock to Bar Pink on Saturday...the interesting titled album The Boy With Astronaut Eyes is yet another fine release in their discography...

Cap the holiday weekend on Sunday with a Golden Hill house show featuring none other than The Shivers...openers are Redding Hunter's (Peter and the Wolf) new project Gender Infiniti and Races front man Wade Ryff, making it the show of the night...for the address click here...

The Tree Ring perform Saturday at the Birch North Park Theatre

Photo Courtesy of the Tree Ring

This article should only contain: “The Tree Ring, album release show, Saturday, Birch North Park Theatre” and that should be enough to convince you to go. But I am in the unique position of being a Point Loma Nazarene alum, which means I only had to look for the closest find a feather-hair-extension or a mustache (student’s or professor’s) to find a fan. The local five-piece chamber-pop group includes the prolific Joel P West, who recently wrote the music for the film “I am not a Hipster”, the multi-talented Kelly Bennett, who spends her days as the Arts Editor for Voice of San Diego, Douglas Welcome, Darla Hawn, and Jon Titterington. While the idea of strings-and-organ-heavy rock may turn off some, The Tree Ring’s music is always engrossing and often transcendent. They’re bringing their intimate and complex music to the Birch North Park Theatre tomorrow night to celebrate the release of their new album, "Brushbloom". You can listen to a few tracks embedded below before the album releases this Tuesday. The Shivers are opening. Be sure to get your tickets early here.

Friday: Jesse LaMonaca and the Dime Novels, The Shivers, and The Janks @ Bar Eleven

Last night I had the pleasure of seeing The Shivers at the Casbah. They were a late add to The Tree Ring show, but they were awesome despite being sick and performing as a duo. They have a full band that will be joining them tonight at Habitat House (showtime around 8:30) and tomorrow when they play at Eleven. The Janks open that show and Jesse LaMonaca and the Dime Novels headline, so it's gonna be a good night on The Boulevard. The show is only $6.

And since I don't think I ever posted them, these are the two songs Jesse played live when I did the Coup d'etat on FM 94/9 a couple weeks ago.
