Kitty Diamond Set To Open This Month (kinda)

If you were paying attention, you might have noticed a quarter page ad in last week's CityBeat. The ad featured a cat with diamond shaped eyes (kinda reminded me of those kitty stickers sold in the sticker machines at 24 hour taco shops) with small writing under the collar that just said "Kitty Diamond".

Last week I ran into Gabe Vega at the Hard Rock Hotel for SoundCheck at 207, and he said something about "the new spot" and how he can't wait to book bands again and how it would be kinda "how the Beauty Bar was when it first started" and of course my eyes and ears bugged out, but he said he couldn't say anymore because it was premature and he didn't want me to go blabbing. Well, Kitty Diamond is almost here, located at 3780 Park Boulevard just south of University (formerly/currently The Flame).

The Silent Comedy, Beauty Bar, 1/4/08

What a great weekend, huh? Good music, good times, and a Chargers win.

Even though there were only 3 workdays last week, it was a tough workweek, trying to catch up and get some serious projects done, so come Friday night, I was ready to let loose. I knew that wouldn't be a challenge with The Silent Comedy playing at the Beauty Bar. San Diego is full of plenty of talented bands, but there are a handful who just feel like a party when they're onstage. The Swedish Models, Delta Spirit and Society! come to mind, but I think The Silent Comedy top the list. They're constantly switching up instruments, lead vocals are rotated, and their look and sound make you wanna walk into the saloon and order a whiskey up. I was just bummed that the set was so short. The band played some older tunes, and two from their forthcoming EP- Gasoline, which they also played at the last Casbah show (it's on my YouTube) and 49, which they debuted live on Friday.

The night was also the final 'Feel The Noise' night for Gabe Vega and Saul before they head off to U-31, so there were a lot of people just there to show their love for what they've been doing at Beauty Bar for the last couple years.

After the band finished, I was on my way back to Kensington. I met up with Adam and we went to the bar in hopes of catching Cabron, but they had already finished, so we just chilled at the bar till closing time, which was nice because it was mellow there. Not a bad way to finish the night.

Erika Jessup, Saul, & Gabe Vega To Leave Beauty Bar

Erika Jessup, who has been managing the Beauty Bar since it opened 2 years ago, has submitted her resignation and will be heading over to U-31, the new North Park bar that was bought by the owners of the Morena Club and took over Buster Daly's. Her replacement is unknown at this time.

Additionally, Saul & Gabe Vega will be taking their "Feel The Noise" nights over to u-31.

The three will begin their tenure with a birthday bash for Saul on January 11.

Late Newsy Bits:

From San Diego County Fair:
Singers Paul Anka and Engelbert Humperdinck, hip hop group Gym Class Heroes and Banda stars La Banda Machos are the latest entertainers to be added to the San Diego County Fair's Summer Concert Series, presented by Harrah's Rincon Casino & Resort San Diego North on the Grandstand Stage. Tickets for these shows and more are on sale now.

Way to lock it in, guys. This has got to be close to the worst. music. year. ever. for the fair. Guess my 'best show ever' for the fair is solidly locked in with Juanes. Who was your favorite headliner?

Andrea felt I was being dismissive by not posting this concert announcement, but as I told her, I watched Kelly Clarkson on Letterman last night over Feist on Leno, so while I might not be racing out to buy her CDs, it actually makes me happy when Gabe Vega throws on "Since You've Been Gone" at the Beauty Bar.

Kelly Clarkson is hitting the road to support her latest album My December. She'll be making a stop at the San Diego Sports Arena on Friday, September 21, 2007 and she's bringing her friend Mat Kearney. Tickets go on sale this Saturday, May 12 @10 am

I'll take one media/photo pass, thank you very much.
