Photos: Pinback & Buckfast Superbee @ The Lafayette Hotel 10/27/2018

On Saturday night, the Lafayette Hotel, Swim Club and Bungalows hosted a massive Halloween to-do which featured live performances by Pinback, Buckfast Superbee, and Gods of Mt. Olympus in the Mississippi Room...aka the Clamshell Room...and upstairs in the lobby there were DJs, local beer kiosks and places to hang. I (Rosey) worked at the Irenic that night for the Noah Kahan show, so by the time Tim Fears and I arrived, BFSB was finishing their set but it was sweet nonetheless, with the band dressed as clergy for Halloween.
Pinback headlined the show and of course played all of the favorite jams. We couldn't help but notice go-go dancers who didn't quite know what to make of the music or how to dance to it, but it was cute and with a room full of costumed adults and lots of alcohol, nobody seemed to care. At one point of the show, all the lights came on and nobody could really figure out why or what was happened, but it was resolved and the show went on till almost 1am. We bailed so it could've continued, but after a long week and big night before, you just gotta call it sometimes. Tim shot all of these amazing photos for your perusal, after the jump.

Celebrating the Boulevard Sign's 25th Anniversary Showcase Banner Unveiling- Friday, April 4, 2014

This Friday, the Lafayette Hotel is hosting a little shindig to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the Boulevard Sign. El Cajon Boulevard has been spruced up quite a bit over the years, and the party will also celebrate the new banners featuring business owners, residents, and local celebrities. Both Tim Mays and Tim Pyles are featured and their banners are pretty sweet. You can check out the Facebook page or just go to the ticket buying site here.

As you well know, NYE at the Lafayette is sold out tonight. There will be two lines: one for people with hotel reservations, band guest lists, and SoundDiego/FM 94/9 and other contest winners. The other line is the will call list (which I'll be working). The list is super fast if everyone has their IDs out and ready to go. New Year's Eve At The Lafayette: Full Lineup & Information

Last week the Casbah held a blind sale for New Year's Eve at the Lafayette. A limited amount of tickets were offered for just $15, and I'm sorry that it only got a mention in my listings and not a devoted post, but things have been a little crazy lately. They sold out pretty quick anyway, but I'd suggest if you're considering going, you buy your tickets now. They went up to $25, and now you can get them for $35, but the price is going to keep going up and I can tell you the show is already over 60% sold out. Of course, there's confusion every year. If you just want tickets, you want to buy them through the Casbah here. However, if you want to reserve a room, all packages include 2 tickets, and you should reserve those through The Lafayette. The reservation system will include the promo code which includes 2 tickets/room. Additional guests will have to purchase tickets separately.

Anyway, the lineup is out and it is pretty exciting. Since Darren's Van will be out on the road (accepting reservations now!), I will once again be working the front door of the event to greet all of the beautiful people.

This year, New Year's Eve at the Lafayette features Transfer, Ziggy Shuffledust, Dead Feather Moon, Blackout Party, Low Volts, In Motion Trio, DJ Beto, and The Visual Underground handling all the cool lights and projections and installations and such.

The Bright Side Presents Pool Side Pow Wow

Black Owl and El Dorado are teaming up to bring the Bright Side and they are presenting the Pool Side Pow  Wow tomorrow (Sunday, August 26), at The Lafayette Hotel. The event includes live bands Barbarian, Chase and The Burns (formerly Bully) and DJ's Saul Q, Jeremiah Zimmerman (The Silent Comedy) and Camron Zibaie spinning classic rock, oldies, and rock and roll. The event goes from 1pm to 5:30pm and costs $10.

Overdue Recap: Holy Rolling Empire & Tranfer @ TNT; Leopold & His Fiction @ Ruby Room, 11.6.08

Last Thursday, I headed down to TNT. I was especially pleased upon arrival that there was fencing around the patio. The past couple months, TNT had been denied their alcohol license from SDPD because the area was merely roped off, but they got the fencing and thus a bar back on the patio, instead of being relegated to the balcony of MCASD. I got there quite early...Jake dropped me off after dinner, and he was off to a gig, I was off to a night of getting down.

From the second I arrived, I knew it was going to be a great night. First, I ran into the boys from Transfer and chatted for a while, then met some of the guys from Holy Rolling Empire, a band from Arizona that later would blow my mind with their talent and performance. After saying proper hellos to everyone, I made my way to the bar to find my BFF Kristian pouring drinks. The sponsor of the night was Tommy Bahama rum as well as the usual Stone beers. I'm a fan of rum, but please don't try to convince me that you can make a cosmo with rum. That's all. I opted for the standard rum and coke for the evening. I was pretty impressed with the ice sculptures, though they were built to be ice luges but couldn't be used as such for obvious reasons. The energy at the museum was high throughout the night which was great to see after a couple months where the attendance slumped a bit.

Eventually the bands got started and there's clearly a reason why the openers have 'Holy' in their name, because HOLY SHIT. They were so. freaking. great. Their sound was huge and I was frankly astonished by how young they all were because they blew me away, not to mention what awesome guys they were to chill with. But I'm getting ahead of myself.



Holy Rolling Empire was followed by Transfer. It was funny to me that Cooper asked me to make sure I remembered to write about them because (a) it is well established that I am a fan and (b) there is nothing I could ever write, perhaps because language fails me, to express how awesome they are to watch every single time I see them. They are too big for San Diego but the fact that they never forget their hometown and love playing to a hometown crowd that makes them all the more awesome.

From TNT, Jeff was kind enough to drop me off at the Ruby Room to catch Leopold & His Fiction. I have to admit, I regret not having posted more about the band before their show, because they deserved more of a crowd than they had. They're out of SF, with roots in Detroit and Kentucky, and I think they're a band to keep on your radar because they brought it huge, which is something special- like they could've been playing to 5 or 5000 people and played with all the same heart. I introduced myself to the band after their set and was appreciative that I was handed a CD and it's really, really good. Their new album will be released in January and you can be sure I'll post MP3s when I'm given clearance to do so.





Since I'd been dropped off at the Ruby Room, I caught a ride with Abraham. I got a call from HRE that they were at the Red Fox Room so we headed to hang out for an after party, except they'd been kicked out of their room. We still got to hang out a little and I was able to capture some very drunken snippets of interview. I will post a disclaimer that Holy Rolling Empire love Transfer and are doing some dates with them as well as The Silent Comedy, so these videos are in jest. And please ignore my saucy slurring.







I heart these boys and I'm sorry that I missed their show a couple days later at The Jumping Turtle, but I guarantee they'll be back. I will do everything in my power to make sure that happens.

CityBeat "SummerBeat" Party

Friday afternoon kicked off with CityBeat's SummerBeat Party at the Lafayette Hotel. The hotel is on El Cajon Blvd; you might know it as the hotel behind the Red Fox Room. It was such a cool venue for a party. The hotel lobby has a fabric sun shade covering it instead of a traditional roof, so there's this airy feel about the place. Unfortunately the city wouldn't grant a performance permit, so the bands were canceled, but the fashion show took place as planned.

But we all know I was not there for a fashion show. I was there for my two favorite words in the English language: "free" and "booze". Wristbands were given to "VIPs", though it seemed about 80% of the attendees had them and resulted in the bar being quite chaotic most of the time.



I was happy to see so many friends out so early on a Friday...

The bar turned to a cash bar at 8, so Andrea and I hung out in the patio and caught about 15 minutes of the fashion show and said our goodbyes before taking off and heading to destination #2 for the evening, the Swedish Models at the Beauty Bar.

On our way to the Beauty Bar we were slightly delayed by a stop for dinner, a stop home to feed my dog, and a pass through the liquor store where my car was blocked by hundreds of cyclists doing a Critical Mass ride through Kensington, but soon enough, we were at the Beauty Bar.
