Last Chance to RSVP For Bay Sessions with The Silent Comedy

Our little team at DoSD have had such an amazing time partnering with the Casbah and Loews Coronado Bay Resort with this summer's Bay Sessions. Admittedly, I missed the El Vez show last week, but was fortunate enough to be there for the Redwoods Revue and Creepxotica. Those were both relatively tame shows, however, and so I'm excited that we're closing out with a bang and The Silent Comedy. It's been ages since I've seen the band play and the setting is really just stunning. The whole thing is free including parking, and the bar offers affordable beer, wine and cocktails for your enjoyment. Don't miss it!

Friday Night: Make A Run For The Border With The Silent Comedy

My friends at Cantaloop Media are keeping busy south of the border. While we have a great music scene in San Diego, they're working feverishly to curate the same in Tijuana and I have to say, it's a bit cooler, edgier, with a DIY aesthetic, a feeling of community, and free from some of the limits we have here. Throw in a combination event with Turista Libre, and Friday night in Tijuana seems like a no-brainer. (An extra plug that Darren's Van will be working, so if you and your friends need to get from North Park, South Park, Downtown or wherever to and from the border, he's your guy.) Get your passports and head south!

Here's the deal:
The Silent Comedy
Madame Ur y Sus Hombres
Love & The Skull
Teenage Fiction
at Black Box (6th and Revolucion)
Tickets are 50 pesos at the door, ages 18+

For the Turista Libre package, you get

  • transportation from border (with Derrick walking you across the border from McDonald's)
  • drinks on the bus
  • pre-show drink at Baja Craft Beers Tasting Room with the bands!
  • entrance to the show
  • return trip to U.S. border
All for $20!! Buy your tickets to reserve your spot now!

San Diego Rocktoberfest Returns!

I feel like I failed you, San Diego, because if you weren't following me on Twitter or Facebook, my only mention of the $5 blind ticket sale for Rocktoberfest was in one of my Things To Do posts, but now that the lineup has been announced, tickets can still be purchased for just $15, so that ain't too shabby for an event that has become a not-to-miss party in the past few years. Yes, the joint effort of The Casbah, West Coast Tavern, and FM 94/9 is back and offers a great lineup.

Here's the skinny:

Saturday, October 20, 3pm - 10pm
Buy tickets at sdrocktoberfest.com for $15. Prices go up the day of show.
2 Stages
9 Bands
Beer/Full Bar
Food
Dancing
University Avenue and 29th Street (parking lot behind North Park Theater)

The lineup features Mariachi El Bronx, The Silent Comedy, Transfer, Hyena, Blackout Party, Mrs. Magician, Family Wagon, New Mexico, and Euphoria Brass Band.

I know there are a ton of great shows that night, but if you're like me, this is definitely where you'll start off your day, even if you have to cut out early for Frightened Rabbit, the Livewire Anniversary Party, or any other show that night. This doozy of a lineup runs from 3-10pm, so you can still hit up all of the other places, and keep in mind that this is an event that allows re-entry so you can eat/drink inside the party, or leave to patronize local surrounding businesses.

San Diego Newsy Bits

When I worked in advertising, I attended several events hosted by SAFE, the San Diego Advertising Fund For Emergencies. The fund was there for people in the industry who experienced sudden medical expenses for things not covered by insurance. While I appreciate that the San Diego Music Foundation raises money for the future of music in San Diego, I think we are in desperate need of a similar organization to help out our music community when bad things happen, whether it be medical emergencies or stolen gear. It's great when we host benefits for our friends, like the benefit this weekend for Greg Willis who recently had a stroke, but it would be awesome if someone with some non-profit knowledge and know-how would get something going similar to MusicCares on a local basis. This week's news only emphasizes this need in San Diego. Be safe, San Diego.

Kelsea Rae Little Gets Struck By Car

From Kelsea's Facebook:

"This morning, at about 7:57 I was struck by a car while in a cross walk, on my way to work. I went up onto the car and my head smacked the glass and completely cracked the woman's windshield, and I flew to the ground where I landed on my legs.

I was taken to the ER in an ambulance on a stretcher and the whole shebang. For a brief moment when they sat me up to do a chest scan, my vision rapidly began to blur and my hearing started to fade. I honestly thought my brain was bleeding and that I was about to die. It was only the blood rushing back into my head but I was so frightened.

My scans have been coming back fine and my family is here. Lots and lots of bruising but I think I'll be okay. It was just one of those things that make you realize how precious life is and how happy you are to be alive. I try to remember this daily, but today I am fully feeling what I can only characterize as gratitude. I love you all, seize each moment, please.

And for god's sake, PLEASE double check that there isn't anyone in a crosswalk before you step on the gas ;)"

GREASER RECOVERS FROM SURGERY
Andrew Snodgrass, aka Greaser, is recovering from quadruple bypass surgery at Mercy Hospital. We hope to see Greaser back on his feet and pouring your Stone growlers again soon.

From Andrew's Facebook:
"Just wanted to say thank you to everyone out there for the good vibes and prayers sent my way the last couple of days. Recovery has been tough, on both me and my family, but will be going home soon. No 32 year old should have to go through this surgery, even with a family history of heart issues, so please, do yourself and family some help by at least getting a check up from the dr every now and again. Wouldn't be such a bad idea to drink less soda, that shit's the worst for you, and eat some vegetables.

Again, I thank and love you all for everything."

SXSW Experience: Italian Japanese

Though Italian Japanese had a short stay in Austin, I ran into the band on Thursday night at the Velveeta Room, where The Silent Comedy played a 1:30 am set. After the show, they were all kind enough to give me a ride back to the house where I was staying, saving me cab money and who knows how much  time just trying to catch one. This is the post SXSW survey as answered by the band's manager.

How long were you in Austin?
Wednesday March 14th through Thursday March 15th.

Did you drive or fly? Any travel stories you'd like to share?
We've been on tour for two weeks, and SXSW was part of the tour.

We randomly ran into Transfer and The Silent Comedy after playing the City Tavern in Dallas, and closed the bar down. Transfer was playing a show a couple blocks away the same night, and The Silent Comedy came out to support. Afterwards they headed to the venue we were playing out to have drinks. We ended up having a blast with our San Diego crew.

Did you play? If so, when and where?
Yes, we played four showcases. Wednesday night we played The Thirsty Nickel at 9:30pm. Thursday we played Cheer Up Charlie's at 3:30pm, Blind Pig at 7pm, and Wahoo's at 11pm.

How were your crowds? The venues?
Wahoo's was a huge surprise for us. Ended up being the most energetic crowd. The Thirsty Nickel and Blind Pig were great. Cheer Up Charlie's had an awesome main stage with amazing sound.

Any memorable or standout moments from your own shows?
Yes, for our Thirsty Nickel show, our friends from the Chain Gang of 1974 came out. For Cheer Up Charlie's it was awesome playing with Saint Motel, Dirty Beaches, and our friends from Mrs. Magician. The Cuckoo Chaos boys came to support us as well.

Did you catch any parties or showcases of note?
We caught our friends Cults at the Carson Daly Last Call showcase, which was sweet.
Writer at Shangri-la was awesome.
The Silent Comedy at The Velveeta Room was off the hook!
Saint Motel, The Chain Gang of 1974, & Paper Route were also an amazing line-up at Peckerheads.
We also caught Snoop Dogg at the Doritos Party.

Will you go back as a band or fan in 2013?
BOTH! Definitely.

Any wrapup thoughts, lessons learned, crazy moments, cool tales to share?
Pack light. Don't speed. Eat your fruits & vegetables. Bring a dolly. Don't forget to sleep... Coffee coffee coffee.

SXSW Saturday: Final Day in Austin

A week has passed since my return from South By Southwest and I feel like I still have so much to talk about, but then last week I saw this snarky post on Facebook that said something like, "Has anything ever happened at SXSW in twenty years that anyone who wasn't there actually cared about?"  Well, Sir, probably not,  but if you think about it in those terms, why bother chronicling anything ever? Why even have a Facebook account if what happens to other people is so boring and inconsequential to your life? I'm not trying to save the world here, just living my little life and writing about it. So here goes. After the jump...

SXSW Delirium: The Silent Comedy

One of the reasons I love going to SXSW is the band van experience. I was a high school and college athlete and it was the road trips that always made the experiences so rich. Not being a musician, there aren't a whole lot of opportunities to get that behind the curtain feeling. I had a great time with The Heavy Guilt, but I dunno if we hit it quite like The Silent Comedy. (Incidentally, Josh's hoodie was free street swag at SXSW. Talk about a score!)

SXSW Experience: The Silent Comedy

It was nearly impossible to go to SXSW and not see The Silent Comedy ruling the streets of Austin and hear people buzzing about their amazing performances. I was lucky enough to bump into drummer Chad Lee after leaving A Scribe Amidst The Lions. He and I had a beer at Bayou and he had a broken All Access wristband from their earlier set at Stubb's. The bartender at Bayou found us some tape and we met up with the rest of The Silent Comedy and Chad ran distraction as we walked into Stubb's and the security guard inspected my wristband, skipping both lines into the venue going in each direction. We saw Saint Motel perform, the guys from Transfer showed up, and eventually we all went to The Silent Comedy's late night set at the Velveeta Room. On Saturday, I just missed the band's set at the Mohawk, but we had fun in the VIP area for a couple hours as I enjoyed what would be my last Lone Star's of my trip. Later, the guys came to the University of Texas where I was with The Heavy Guilt who busked the line waiting to get in. I was invited to join them back on 6th after the show, but it was late and I had to catch the final bus home before setting off the next morning.

How long were you in Austin (from when to when)?
We were in Austin from Tuesday the 13th to Sunday the 18th.

Did you drive or fly? Any travel stories you'd like to share?

We drove the entire way with several shows in Arizona and Texas on the way out, and Las Vegas on the way back. The drive got pretty treacherous when a semi-truck carrying pallets in front of us started to lose its cargo. Pallets smashed on the road in front of us, making it necessary to swerve and dodge to avoid popping our tires. We also hit ice, snow, and sand. Fortunately, we were safe through it all, and made it out alive.

Did you play? If so, when and where?
We did play. Too many places to mention them all, but some definite highlights were Stubb's and Mohawk. Our management party at Stubb's had us playing with some amazing bands like Lucero and Alabama Shakes. The MOG party at Mohawk was another highlight with The Roots and Blitzen Trapper. Both were tons of fun!

How were your crowds? The venues?
Every show art SXSW is so unique, which is half the fun. The crowds were great whether they were large or small, and the venues each had their own special charm.

Any memorable or standout moments from your own shows?
The MOG party at Mohawk had to be our favorite. We showed up early to load in and there was a line of 300 people before doors even opened. It stayed that way for most of the day. Our set was a blast, and got super rowdy. After that, we got to hang out and watch Gary Clark Jr., Bob Mould, Blitzen Trapper, and The Roots while sipping cold Lone Star. Pretty good day overall.

Did you catch any parties or showcases of note?
The Warner Bros. party was a ton of fun! We also went to the Mumford and Sons documentary screening, and saw them and Edward Sharpe play. Mostly we were working, rather than having a good time, so we didn't get to too many parties.

Will you go back as a band or fan in 2013?
Next year we will probably be back as a band if we aren't on tour already.

Any wrapup thoughts, lessons learned, crazy moments, cool tales to share?
Probably our best moment was shooting whiskey with an older southern gentleman from Country Music Television at the Warner Bros. party. He had the coolest stories, and drank all of us youngsters under the table.

This is a playlist of some of their set at Velveeta.

SXSW- Thursday Pt II or Sometimes You Have To Fake It

So if you ever believe that electricity is hard to come by, just try to find a spare outlet to charge your phone in Austin during SXSW.

Last night I left off at the Sahara, so that's where I'll pick up. The Heavy Guilt left the Sahara, but I stayed to catch A Scribe Amidst The Lions and to catch up with Ryan Blue and Chad Deal (of The Reader). When the show finished, we lingered about, taking full advantage of the ridiculously cheap drinks and backyard vibe of Sahara. Eventually we all got our shit together and went to Scribe's hotel. What was supposed to be a dropby ended up being a full three beer hang, until they motivated to get to their next showcase. (more after the jump)

Video: The Silent Comedy at NAMM

I went to the NAMM convention back in January and captured The Silent Comedy performing in the Taylor Guitars demo room. Being the slacker that I am, I uploaded these videos but never got around to adding titles and such so I never posted them. Since The Silent Comedy are playing at the Belly Up tomorrow night with Dead Feather Moon and The Howls, I thought it was about time that I shared them, even if I still haven't added titles. The tickets are selling quickly and the show is expected to sell out soon, so if you want to catch it, I suggest you BUY TICKETS NOW. In case you haven't seen the three bands joining forces for "The Homestead Sessions", check out the three videos below.

America's Cup Racing Series Kicks Off In San Diego

Penalty!
I'm at the America's Cup Village at the moment. I scored press credentials which means that I might hang out here during the week for a change of scenery while I take advantage of their wi-fi and learn a thing or two about racing. sailing. catamaraning. I dunno...maybe I'll pick up the lingo while I'm here. I'm also going to strategically sat by some Spanish media guys. I love hearing castellano.

I ran into Halloran and met the stage managers and they told me the listings had been updated but it appears that the site still has the vague spaceholders for the Battle of the Bands slots. They told me that Abandon The Raft, Illuminauts, Black Hondo, and one more qualified- the name escapes me now-but they didn't tell me what order they qualified. I heard Jamuel Saxon is playing on Friday, too, but I don't know what time. So yeah, I'm not very useful right now but thought I'd update what I know since I'm here now. I changed the link to the banner ad at the top of my site, so you should be able to get those updates when the ladies post from the office.

Wednesday, November 16 - Agua Dulce (4:15)
Thursday, November 17 - The Silent Comedy (8:15) , Little Hurricane (7pm), The Donkeys (5:15)

Sunday, November 20- The Cataracs (5pm)

Obviously there is going to be massive press coverage (this media room is MASSIVE), but here are some quick photos I shot. More photos after the jump.

America's Cup Village Is Coming...and Bringing FREE Concerts!!!

The America's Cup doesn't take place until 2013, but for many years it was an institution here in San Diego, so it is fitting that the first America's Cup World Series event is taking place right here in our own backyard (if you consider the Big Bay your backyard). Even if you know nothing about the regatta, the great thing for you is that the organizers are making a big party out of it. So even if that means they're trying to attract a younger demographic to care about the sport and earn eyeballs for advertisers by bribing you, I'd say that if someone wants to throw a free multi-day event and book awesome FREE CONCERTS, I'm all for it. (There is a suggested donation of $10 for Ocean Conservation Projects)

The concerts will take place at the America's Cup Village (Broadway & Navy Pier on Harbor Drive) each day immediately after racing ends so set times are approximate. There is also a Battle of the Bands taking place, so if you think your band has the chops to play, I highly suggest entering (click the battle of the bands flyer below or the banner at the top of my site). A little bird may have told me that there has only been ONE ENTRY so far, and though they reserve the right to not book anyone, it's a great opportunity to get in front of a lot of eyeballs and the contest closes on Sunday. Halloran will be hosting each night's events.

Wednesday, November 16 - Agua Dulce (4:15)
Thursday, November 17 - The Silent Comedy (8:15) , Little Hurricane (7pm), The Donkeys (5:15)
Friday, November 18 - Chromeo DJ Set (8:30), K.Flay (7:45), The Soft Pack (6:30), Earth Amplified (4:15)
Saturday, November 19 - Diplo (8:15), Hyena (7pm), The Chain Gang of 1974 (5:45)
Sunday, November 20- The Cataracts (5pm)

The Silent Comedy Release "Gasoline" Video

We, The Silent Comedy guys, recently shot a video for our song "Gasoline" in the woods outside San Diego with our good friends Kevin and Rebecca Joelson, and the help of some other friends as well.

Rather than producing a conventional music video, we decided to use acoustic instruments and record all the audio on-site. We shot the video in one continuous take that pans 360 degrees. This was a challenging way to shoot, but ended up creating a cool effect.

Check it out!

The Silent Comedy: Going Viral?

In the nearly five years of this site, I have amassed over 2,000 videos on my YouTube Channel with over 1.3 million views combined. I don't especially promote my videos or try and get subscribers, I just put them up, occasionally repost them here, and if people find them, then great. I do, however, pay attention to comments. Everytime someone comments on a video, I get it in an email, and I remove all the nasty and mean comments from YouTube trolls or respond to someone trying to find out more about a specific show or artist. Lately I've noticed a spike in the views and comments of a few of my videos of The Silent Comedy, so when I saw Josh and Jeremiah on Sunday at the Casbah, I asked if they'd posted them somewhere new. I wanted to know why the sudden TSC spike.

Well, it turns out that The Silent Comedy's "Bartholomew" was recently used in a video game trailer for Dark Souls. The video was posted on August 17 and already has over a million views! They also told me that they're analytics changed drastically from 30-40 year old women to 13-19 year old boys. Not shocking, but pretty amazing. This is the power of the video game industry. Keep this in mind when people come asking to license your music, both in terms of the reach and exposure for your band and when negotiating to make sure you're being properly compensated.

A lot of people have taken the video and uploaded the song with a still photo, but this one had us quite entertained at the merch booth.

You know you've "made it" when someone makes a dubstep remix of your song.

Anyway, thanks to Josh & Jeremiah for sharing the fun with me on this. I better go back and title all of those older videos I shot!

The Heavy Guilt at the Casbah, 3.3.2011

At last night's Silent Comedy show at the Casbah, I had the sad realization that I'll probably never get new video of the band performing there because their uberfans just won't let anyone pass their inpenetrable wall of elbows. I'm glad the band is loved, but seriously, Josh might have to start looking into restraining orders. I was still happy to be there and enjoy the show from the back. I was especially stoked because I've mentioned The Heavy Guilt a few times over the past year, and to me, they were the perfect fit to open the show. My apologies to the Steelwells, I was TCB and before I realized it, I'd missed the whole set. Sometimes that's the way it goes. Here's a spoiler: The Heavy Guilt is one of the bands I have booked for the main stage of the North Park Festival of Arts on May 15, so stay tuned because you'll be hearing a lot about them from me in the months to come.

Cowboys and Hipsters

The hardest part of getting ready for the Ryan Bingham and the Dead Horses/ Silent Comedy show was figuring out what to wear. Let me explain- I have played with Ryan Bingham, and know that this boy is straight up rodeo, country. (This Oscar winner is an ex-bullrider from New Mexico for crying out loud!) But I've only seen the Silent Comedy at U31, The Royal Dive, and the Casbah- so deciding between my Wranglers and Ariats vs. Chick Jeans and Vans was a little tough...(But since I don't have any chick jeans...These hips don't lie... jussayin...) One thing was for sure... I was gonna wear flannel. (but was it gonna be tucked... or untucked... sigh...)

But so did every other person at the SOLD OUT show at the El Rey Theatre in Los Angeles last night. The line for the show wrapped around the Wilshire sidewalk, and seemed to surprise every single LA model and actor/(AKA Baristas and waitresses...) who stopped to ask, "Um... is this like... the line???"

The show started with the band's front man, Joshua Zimmerman, conjuring up the spirits of our ancestors, to come out of the Pacific Ocean and help the crowd respect what the Silent Comedy was about to slap them across the face with. The spirits definitely showed up through a SCREAMING harmonica solo by the obviously excited, Tim Graves, who started the show in his usual rambunctious manner and kept the excitement going from beginning to end, with a climax of climbing up the sidestage and playing a ridiculous-lung collapsing solo from 30 feet in the air. (One handed... and for a hell of alot longer than 8 seconds!!!)

The band's talent obviously surprised the sound/light guys at El Rey because on the second song, when Jeremiah Zimmerman started to sing, they couldn't seem to figure out where his voice was coming from or where even where he was on stage for a few seconds- Then, as he moved down to work the crowd and go back again, and they simply didn't have enough staff to keep up with the Silent Comedy's energy! (Grrrrr... That dude can SING!!!)

But to the Audio/Visual guys' credit, looking at the Silent Comedy's style, you might think that they were going to do covers of Mumford and Sons all night- as I overheard a girl next to me drunkenly ask her boyfriend... (or agent... or manager... or whatever he was...) They don't seem to have the style of a rock band that's about to take you prisoner, get you drunk, tell you that you don't belong in church, and then make you sing "Hallelujah" with them, but that's exactly what they do, and every person in the crowd will find themselves led to the "waters of rock" and "baptized" by their sound. (Please don't tell my mom I wrote that...) (Also, will you guys take me shopping???)

The Silent Comedy also paid tribute to Chad Lee's grandfather who passed away the day before the show. Playing an extremely resounding song in his honor, they grasped the hearts of every person in the theatre.

I bought their album/t-shirt/pin/postcard deal and will be rocking it at my next show, because they have made me an even bigger fan than I was before! If they are coming to your city, do yourself a favor, and purchase your tickets early, so you don't miss one of San Diego's new class of musical royalty, that gives a headlining performance as an opening band.

P.S. Justin Buchanan has the best mustache in San Diego. He's my Brett Favre.

The Silent Comedy's 2010 Tour Highlights

It's been a busy year for us in The Silent Comedy. It's not over yet, but we decided to put together a collection of some of our favorite moments from this past year (with a couple previously unseen moments from last year's 91X Boo's Cruise thrown in). We've been traveling a lot lately, so this video will give you an idea of what we get up to when we're on the road.

We set the video to one of our favorite songs from our good friends, Fierce Creatures, who will be joining us at the Casbah on November 11th! This show is going to be awesome, so click here to get your tickets now!

Enjoy the video!
