San Diego Rocktoberfest Returns!

I feel like I failed you, San Diego, because if you weren't following me on Twitter or Facebook, my only mention of the $5 blind ticket sale for Rocktoberfest was in one of my Things To Do posts, but now that the lineup has been announced, tickets can still be purchased for just $15, so that ain't too shabby for an event that has become a not-to-miss party in the past few years. Yes, the joint effort of The Casbah, West Coast Tavern, and FM 94/9 is back and offers a great lineup.

Here's the skinny:

Saturday, October 20, 3pm - 10pm
Buy tickets at sdrocktoberfest.com for $15. Prices go up the day of show.
2 Stages
9 Bands
Beer/Full Bar
Food
Dancing
University Avenue and 29th Street (parking lot behind North Park Theater)

The lineup features Mariachi El Bronx, The Silent Comedy, Transfer, Hyena, Blackout Party, Mrs. Magician, Family Wagon, New Mexico, and Euphoria Brass Band.

I know there are a ton of great shows that night, but if you're like me, this is definitely where you'll start off your day, even if you have to cut out early for Frightened Rabbit, the Livewire Anniversary Party, or any other show that night. This doozy of a lineup runs from 3-10pm, so you can still hit up all of the other places, and keep in mind that this is an event that allows re-entry so you can eat/drink inside the party, or leave to patronize local surrounding businesses.

Video: The Blackout Party "Wanna See You Smile"

The Blackout Party have a new video for their song "Wanna See You Smile", off their latest release, Closed Mouth Don't Get Fed. The video was shot at Lost Ark Studio while it was under reconstruction and is the second video from the album. If you missed the first one, check out "Spanish Gold".

Photos: FM 94/9 Holiday Hootenanny

Last weekend, FM 94/9 had their annual Holiday Hootenanny concert. For the first time, the show was at USD's Jennny Craig Pavilion and had a killer lineup with My Morning Jacket, Two Door Cinema Club, Matt & Kim, and Delta Spirit, with The Blackout Party entertaining the beer garden between mainstage acts. These are few of my favorite shots of the night, with the full album at the bottom. Thanks to everyone at FM 94/9 for another great year of music and allowing me to weasel snapshots among the pros.

The White Buffalo w/ Blackout Party & Ari Shine @ Casbah- 07.09.11

Last Saturday the Casbah hosted a trio of acts featuring some good ol' Americana. Ari Shine from LA opened up for local boys Blackout Party, who set the stage for Los Angeles' The White Buffalo. Late start and an even later finish to the night, but it was all well worth it.

Weekend shows at the Casbah are known to run later than the Sunday through Monday shows and Saturday was no exception. It all started when opener Ari Shine started playing just before 10, about an hour and a half after doors had opened. Its always good to give the crowd time to lube up before the music starts, but by around 9:45 quite a few people were starting to wonder if the opening act was happening or not. Apparently making up for lost time, Shine played what seemed to be a very long (hour+) set for an opener. Solid tunes, but the one man acoustic show started to drag a bit, especially considering most in attendance were itching for the two following acts to take the stage.

Ari Shine:

I had the opportunity to talk with Brian, Danny and Jesse during the long wait for the opening band which was great since I hadn't seen a Blackout Party show since they played Bar Pink last October. Solid group of guys right there. Apparently, apart from recording their debut album, they have been spending a lot of time practicing and playing live gigs because they seemed much more polished on stage than I remembered. Much more stage presence and crowd interaction, both of which fed into the crowd's rapidly escalating enthusiasm. Keep your eyes peeled for their impending album release show- it's going to be a helluva party.

Blackout Party:

The White Buffalo is one of those acts that, if you're relying solely on the limited tracks available on their website, you have no perspective on what they bring to the table at a live show. The studio recorded versions of their songs offer the same reflective lyricism and melodies as you would get on stage, but the live show takes it all to another level. I've been fortunate enough to see these guys a couple times in the past few months (most recently at The Loft on UCSD's campus) and they continue to amaze. Jake Smith is a flat out force of nature- apart from his intimidating size, his deep, rich vocals have the power to stop you in your tracks. Purely by function of the way he delivers his songs you can tell that his lyrics are not born of some naive impression of what Americana music should be about- he has definitely lived it and it comes through loud and clear in his voice. Those who know me know that I have and will not hesitate to hype this band up at every opportunity. From what I've seen everyone who attends a White Buffalo show, whether it's their first or tenth, walks away immensely satisfied and eager to find out when the next opportunity to see them will arrive.

SoundDiego Session: Jesse LaMonaca and the Dime Novels

As I mentioned yesterday, I spent the evening at NBC studios as Jesse LaMonaca and the Dime Novels recorded two songs to help promote this Thursday night's SoundDiego Live event at Anthology. The first of those videos, for "Fool's Errand", is available for your viewing pleasure below. I also shot the songs with my little HD camera, so after I review, I'm sure we'll be posting those down the line as well.

I hope to see all of your pretty faces out for the free show on Thursday night. There will be drink specials all night ($3 beer/$5 wine), so it won't break the bank, plus you get two great bands with The Blackout Party and Jesse LaMonaca and the Dime Novels.

Lucy's Furcoat & Blackout Party, Casbah, 1.8.09

The Lucy's Furcoat shows were incredible and while I didn't get to leave my post on Friday night and witness the drunken mayhem, I did get to enjoy The Blackout Party and LCF on Thursday night. Both bands delivered blistering performances and the crowd was perfect. It's been great seeing all the great people coming out of the woodwork for all the shows, in fact.

FM 94/9 Independence Jam pt 2

By this point at Indie Jam, it was around 2:30. The Ting-Tings were finishing up their set, I ran into Tim and asked if he could get me an extra credential, so I followed him up the steps and he got me a Casbah stage pass from Porter. It wasn't really necessary, but it gave me leverage to befriend the security up top and I eventually talked to his supervisor who gave us clearance to use the photo barrier for the local stage. Most large shows that I've been to usually have an entrance for photos and one for backstage areas. For some reason, the entrance to get to the photo section of both stages was the same as the backstage area and this caused some confusion, but at least we worked it out up top.

The Blackout Party sounded great and looked perfect, too. Tim was a total rockstar in his wifebeater and aviators as he played his instruments, and Brian was rocking an Obama shirt and the sky made his blue eyes piercing (when he finally took off his shades). Everyone else rocked out, too, though Jake didn't bust another hole in his snare like last time I saw him, fortunately.

After three songs I chilled in the tent for the local stage as more of the bands unloaded, then made my way back to the mainstage for The Whigs. Of all the bands I saw, I was probably least familiar with their music. This was when the mainstage security snafu happened, but Tim worked it out, then later Owen, so I took some quick pics and got out.

There were signs for beer sampling from 3-4p, so Natalie and I walked across the football field to the main beer garden and enjoyed $1 samples of beer and sparks and Velvet and Kristian came to find us. We found a spot on the grass and drank samples until The Whigs finished. From the lawn, we just took everything in, looking at everyone laying on blankets, listening to The Whigs power through their set until the end.

This is where I should say that it's clear people enjoy these events in a million different ways. Some people listened to the music intently, maintaining their spots at the mainstage barrier all day long. Others hang back, minimally clothed, sunbathing while the music played in the background. Some danced, some played hacky sack or frisbee, some hang out to just see one band, and some just drink all day long. Personally, running around, taking pictures, saying hi to friends, being backstage or in a VIP tent, having cold beer...these all make up the ways I enjoyed this event. Just like some people's ideal vacation is a deserted beach in Hawaii, mine is a busy week in a big city where you need 2 days after the vacation just to get back to your real life. Neither is better or worse, just different. With that, The Whigs finished, and it was back up the stairs for Kill Me Tomorrow.

Watching them, I wondered how with all the local shows I go to, I've never seen them. Maybe the band's name sounded too emo for me to even try but they were anything but emo and they played a great set. I promise I will definitely see them again when I can.

I had a beer with Blackout Party and the rest of the bands milling around until I heard the first notes of MgmT and I was off super quick to get to see my band of the day.

Archways & Blackout Party, Casbah, 3.27.08

After a busy week, I kinda had to force myself to the Casbah on Thursday because I did really want to see the show. I got there later than I'd wanted, but in time for Blackout Party. They were great as always, and Jake was an animal on drums, completely destroying his snare which required him to borrow one from the Archways. I decided not to take pictures of them, however, because their usually chicks were out in full force...I counted over 9 people, all up front, all taking pictures. As for the performance, I have to say I like the slower, heavier country songs than the full on rockers, but the set was a good mix of the two.

After Blackout Party, it seemed the room cleared out a bit, but I was glad to see Archways again. I really like this band, whether Chris is up front playing guitar or keys, or just singing and dancing around the stage sans instrument, they mix up their set well and have great stage swagger.

A friend of mine said he asked the band what they sounded like before their set and the answer: "Radiohead." I don't know if that was a joke, or if someone in the band really said that, but either way, Archways are not like Radiohead, but doesn't mean they're not good and I was still really into their performance.

After the show I hung out in the patio pretty much up until Ben kicked us all out. I was glad I'd motivated because I would've been bummed had I missed the show and hanging with friends.

Weekend Recap: Transfer, Delta Spirit, Port O'Brien, Morning Benders, After Party

It was quite a weekend and I just finished cleaning up my house that was looking pretty skanky after a late night after party, but I'll get to that in a sec.

Since Thursday was a big night, I came home from work and took a well deserved deep sleep. I was torn about what to do and where to go because there were quite a few great shows around town, but I slept a bit longer than intended, had a late dinner, and got sucked into Joe Scarborough being his usual obnoxious self on his appearance on Real Time With Bill Maher. By the time all was said and done, I decided to just walk down the street to catch Transfer. I decided to leave my camera at home since I have a gazillion pictures of the guys rocking out the Ken Club from the past. This time I hung back because I lost my earplugs at Chaser's the night before, but the sound there is so good these days, I didn't need them anyway. Jeremy isn't playing bass anymore, so there was a new guy filling in but the band still sounded tight as ever. They played right up until the bar closed and I alternated between the band room and downing some red headed sluts at the bar. It was a chill time and I was in a good mood. I chatted with Lyn out front for a bit then walked home and unintentionally stayed up til 6:30 a.m. I somehow didn't realize that I'd missed two weeks of In Treatment on HBO so I watched until I was all caught up.

Saturday I had planned on going to the skating event at the Clairemont YMCA, but my parents called and reminded me that it was my brother in law's birthday, so instead we all headed down to Point Loma Seafoods. (Why "seafood" is pluralized, I cannot say) The food was delicious and the day was beautiful. After food and cake, we went on a family shopping trip which was actually quite entertaining, then we all went back to my sister's to hang out and have a couple beers.

From there, my sister, Johanna and I went to Ray At Night. I've always planned on going, but something always seems to come up, so this was my first time and we had a good time strolling through the shops and galleries. From there, she dropped me at the Casbah.

I was glad to get there in time for The Morning Benders because they're a great band and I felt bad for them that the crowd was pretty thin when they played the Beauty Bar a couple months back. They're about to head out on tour with The Kooks, so I'm glad to have caught them at a venue I love, since I'll likely not be going to their Kooks show at HoB.

After the band finished, the patio was packed with people and we were enjoying the night hanging on the zebra bench just kinda people watching and shooting the shit, bouncing from the patio to the back bar, back to the patio. Before I knew it, Port O'Brien was onstage. I asked if anyone had heard of them and my friends had not, but from their first song, I had to see what was going on inside because they sounded amazing. The band rocked. Paco Diamante suggested that they had a Neil Young sound, but I was taking in with the sheer energy onstage and the banjo just added something really unique. At one point Van, the singer, got pretty pissed because he wanted his sound adjusted and the sound guy was nowhere to be found or he was on IM chat or some shit. He brushed it off and continued their set, but in talking to him after, he was upset, and I guess had some words with Chad. He was bummed that Jake wasn't doing their sound which seems to be a recurring theme with bands- Jake is in high demand these days and is going on the road with Delta Spirit and a couple other bands in the next couple months. Anyway, here are the pics:

Delta Spirit was up last and the venue was packed. I stayed on the patio for much of their set, talking to the Morning Benders and Port O'Brien.

I made my way in to try and take pics but all I could do was get a spot over near the side exit so they didn't really come out, and Natalie was up front taking photos, so check her site for better pics. Anyway, we were supposed to leave midset to catch Blackout Party at the Ken Club. Abraham was lagging, however, so Paco and I left without him. We stopped at my house, since I knew people would likely come over, I asked Paco to vacuum quickly while I straightened up a tiny bit.

We went to the Ken, did a couple shots, then made our way in to see the band. They sounded so clean and I was in a great mood. Seemed like everyone else was, too, so it made for a great time.

Abraham finally showed up and we all hung out until the bar was shutting down. I knew Abraham and Dan were coming over, but I didn't expect half the bar to come home with us. Not that I minded, of course, but we were up till the wee hours and the drinking didn't stop until it was all gone. And I mean ALL GONE. Every bottle and can of beer, a whole bottle of Jack, half a bottle of vodka, and any tequila I had...all gone. Eventually I went to bed and some people crashed in my living room. When I woke up on Sunday, my house was filthy. I'm hoping my recycling guy comes by soon because my recycle bins are to the max with bottles and cans. I was pretty lazy, however, and caught up with some of my other posting, so I saved the cleanup till tonight, washing every shot glass, digging cigarette butts out of my sink, dusting, vacuuming, and finding random glasses under my furniture, in my bathroom, in the bedroom. Someone left a shirt, which I think is pretty funny if someone went home shirtless, and I have someone's broken cell phone, too, so if you were here and lost a Verizon with no LCD screen, give me a holler.

It's nearing 10 pm on Monday and I can't decide if I should do my weekly listings or head out...it's Andy's b-day at Wit's End, there's mechanical bull riding at U-31 with Laura Jane, and Chaser's and the Casbah have good shows. dilemma...
