Sunday Newsy Bits
*****
My friend Dave has some pretty funny "sound guy rantings" on his MySpace page. You should check them out, he might be talking about your band. Ok, not really any specific band but that advice is good. You might learn something. Dave does sound at several venues including the Ken Club and 710. He also told me about a little spot in PB called Tropicoso. The owner believes in paying the talent, so if you're a band whining that you have to charge your own cover at the Ken, check out playing places outta your comfort zone. Tropicoso even pays the people who play their open mic night! Seriously, it might be worth checking out.
*****
That's really all I've got today. Win Butler is sick and the Arcade Fire have cancelled 9 gigs on their European Tour, so let's send our energy to the cosmos and gets well soon. For me, this is the most I've anticipated a show since I was 14 and couldn't wait to see Blur at the Backdoor at SDSU.

Friday Recap: The May Fire, Rubicks, Red Feathers

It felt like a long set changeover. On weekends at the Beauty Bar, bands can play later, but for people like me who are there to see the bands and then bail when they're done, you can start to get pretty antsy between bands. After a while, Rubicks took the stage. A two piece from London, the initial songs reminded me of Heart of Glass era Blondie. They had synth drum beats with heavy guiar and bass. I liked them live but don't necessarily see myself rocking out to them at home. People more into the dancey electroclash stuff might.

I left before Rubicks finished because I didn't wanna miss Red Feathers at the Ken Club. From what I heard, I shouldn't have missed the Teeth, either, but you can only be so many places at once. I caught the tail end of the Red Feathers set last time they played at the Ken and I loved them. I think they go hand in hand with the Muslims sound and have more instrumentation for an even more full sound. And as my friend Kevin pointed out, they quite photogenic.

I watched their whole set and stuck around till closing time but decided to actually go to sleep when I got home becauses today is gonna be a big one. I'm off to clean my house. Yippee. See you tonight at the Ken Club for Silverbird & Pop Noir. Don't forget I'm having a pre-party at 8. 4 doors down from Ken Coffee on Adams...
Thursday Recap: Siren's Sister & Qu'est-ce Que C'est

The boys from A Weeks Worth were there hanging out so I thought I'd post their pic. They are playing the Beauty Bar next Friday with Dynamite Walls.

Qu'est-ce Que C'est was up afterward and I really loved them. I saw them at The Golden Hill block party but that was back around Halloween so I didn't really rememeber what to expect. It's funny how I can see one 2 piece band and be bored to pieces and other times just be blown away. Who knows. Maybe it was just those pom-ups from Ken Grill kickin in. Regardless, here are some pics.

Blah Blah Post
After an amazing dinner last night at Ken Grill (and a couple awesome "pom-up" martinis), I went to the Beauty Bar for Sirens Sister and Qu'est-ce Que C'est and had a total blast. Thanks to Gabe Vega for hooking me up. I took plenty of pics, but as I'm back on my way over there to see The Rubicks, I will have to post tomorrow. Have a lovely Friday night, everyone. If you haven't seen Grand Ole Party, get your ass down to the Casbah. If you have seen them, then go somewhere else to support the other amazing bands playing tonight. That is all...

Thursday Newsy Bits
*****
I love blogs. I love blogging. I love when I write about a band's performance, and then that band turns around and writes about the show. Case in point, a couple weeks ago I wrote a band called Modern State that played at Scolari's that I liked. A lot. Well, here's what Modern State has to say about that night:
march 13, san diego, california @ scolari’s office
still in the den of
evil that is all of southern califirnia, san diego has at least a few redeeming
qualities. notably, burritos and the many nice folks who live there. truly, what
separates many a shit-hole from another lies entirely in the mentality of a
place. whatever it is, i have experienced san diegans to be consistently good
folks over the years.
scowling behind the bar when we arrived, ritchie
(or the easier to remember t-bone, if you prefer) became a free-beer slingin’
superstar once he realized we were the out-of-towners on the bill. praise be. i
was a little worried about the show at first, no other bands having been asked
to play it at about 3 weeks to go, so i sent out some emails to the few san
diego rockers i know. and it worked out. big thanks to rafter and andrew for the
good words...
Not bad considering his disdain for SoCal (typical of Portland). You should see what he says about LA.
*****
I don't really go outta my way to write about what I think you should listen to, but there are a few bands that I really think you should at least listen to on MySpace and at least consider attending their shows.
The first is Pop Noir. An unsigned band from LA, the band has been called the band to watch in The Rockit Magazine, a tastemaker mag in LA. Have a listen to their songs on MySpace. They've got some good indie/electro songs and will be perfect for Morgan's birthday before we are wowed by Silverbird.
On Sunday, I'm actually skipping out on my boys in Swim Party to head to Brick by Brick for The Small Hours. I have a weakness for Brits (even though only have the band is British), what can I say? I also really like Brick By Brick as a venue and want to show up in a small way to encourage more of the indie rock bookings and less of the cover band and metal stuff. Plus, it's only $5. Words you never thought you'd see me type, right?
I'm taking a 3 day weekend so I hope to see everyone out. I'll be posting between all the fun so check back in.
Wednesday Recap: Paolo Nutini

Afterward, Daye invited me to join him for dinner because he had been told Paolo would be playing later than the passes indicated. We went to dinner and by the time we got to the Abbey at 9, Paolo was almost done with his set. aargh. I was not happy, but made the best of the 4 or 5 songs I did get to see and snuck up front for some pics.

So the highlight of what I did catch was Paolo doing a cover of "Rehab" by Amy Winehouse. Then I realized she's not really getting airplay in SD so nobody else seemed to recognize the track. He finished and I was regretting not going with instinct and getting there earlier.
The one thing that I was stoked about was getting to see a show in The Abbey, a building normally used for private parties and banquets. This is a venue worth checking out. 300+ people, balconies, open floor space, a bar, dining tables, and just cool doors to get around the space. I guess it was a church or something and has very ornate stained glass and lighting and beautiful dark woodwork. Let's just say it got my wheels turnin a bit.

After the show, I considered my options: Elvis Perkins at the Casbah or Foreign Islands and Goes Cube at the Beauty Bar. Then it occurred to me that things had kinda not been working out for me all day, so I made the decision to go home and be responsible for once...clean house, hang out with my dog, get my shit organized. And for once, I got more than 5 hours of sleep.
It's all good today, but I am seriously ready to party this weekend. Today is my best friend Sara's birthday so we'll be doing dinner at Ken Grill and maybe I can convince her to head out to the Beauty Bar or something. This weekend is gonna be really fun and I'm unofficially inviting anyone going to Morgan's birthday at the Ken to come by my pad and pre-party on Saturday. If you don't have my address, just e-mail me and I'll hit you back. Things are gettin good.

Check back for updates, changes, etc. Items in bold are way you might find me. Stalkers.
The Early November Calling It Quits
Apparently there has been some band drama for some time now, which caused a delayed release of their latest album. The singer, Ace, told Edlin after the show that he plans on pursuing his own project.
Tuesday Recap: Sondre Lerche, Willy Mason, Thomas Dybdahl @ Belly Up 3/19/07
Andrea and I arrived in Solana Beach shortly after 8. I pre-purchased my ticket but she hadn't. When she called earlier, the girl at the box office told her she wouldn't have a problem, and I'm sorry to say, she was right. The show was very underattended, but especially for the openers. This show started earlier than most, I suppose, but I'm glad we got there early.
Thomas Dybdahl was first onstage. He's a singer songwriter from Norway who sounded a lot like Tom Waits in recording. In person, he's voice seems less scruffy and more pretty, but I liked his incorporation of almost R&B grooves in his songs. There was even a point where I could picture him doing "Careless Whisper" or something. Everyone in the club was sitting down, except for me, right up front, so I could get some pics for y'all. Clearly I have no shame.

I saw Willy Mason about a month ago at the Sunset Sessions, but this time he was backed by a full band. He still has that deep monotone voice that I love, that feels like he's from another era, but with backing female vocals and a full band, and the awesome sound that only the Belly Up can provide, I really enjoyed this performance.

His little brother played drums

I recorded my favorite song from the last time I saw him, "Save Myself".
Sondre Lerche came on right around 10:15 or so. I don't know what I was expecting. I love Phantom Punch but it's sorta been overshadowed in my rotation by other new releases that have come out this year. Anyway, I had no idea he would rock so much. Especially because when we walked in the venue earlier, he came by the merch table while I was looking at stuff and I had him sign my CD and he was all quiet and buried in his hoodie. He was really energetic and happy and chatty onstage. In fact, though he doesn't quite stick his butt out as much, his onstage demeanor reminded me a lot of Rhett Miller. Beautiful looks, beautiful hair, happily rockin out. I am not a musician so maybe I don't know what I'm talking about, but I didn't realize that his music was really mostly based on jazz chords (which usually make my skin crawl). Sondre Lerche and the Faces Down pretty much rocked my Tuesday night.

I actually recorded two songs, but the first one ran up to 6 minutes, so here's a shorter one. This is "She's Fantastic".
The show was done by 11:40 or so, and instead of zipping out, I got the band to sign my setlist before they went to the merch table for signings. Fantastic.

If you haven't read about Isaac Brock losing it, read this story about how he sliced himself onstage while having a fit.

Monday Recap: Anti Monday League, Pt. 2: The Electric Soft Parade & Goldrush
I didn't think I knew The Electric Soft Parade, but recognized a few songs. I've mentioned I like going to Anti-Monday League totally green and unfamiliar with the bands if I can. It not only makes it fun to hear new bands and form uncontaminated opinions for myself, but it's fun to see how the Casbah crowd changes depending on the bands playing on any given night. Anyway, they were really good, and just as I was pointing out to Scott the 3 foot "too cool" gap, the singer commented on it and everyone edged forward. I wish I could've captured video, but the main singer was way off to the side and the one light that would've let me even get even a decent bit was out. The sound was refreshingly unwhiny, since I've kinda come to expect with a lot of Brit bands. There was also a lack of unnecessary distortion and it worked for me.

Hey look, there's that annoying girl with the blog is taking pics from all over the room!

Let's be realistic here. A bunch of my friends were around, the bartender was being generous, and I was completely over the shitty mood that had contaminated the greater part of my Monday, so I wasn't exactly analyzing the music. When Goldrush started, I was videotaping and taking some pics, then bouncing back outside, then back in, then back out, but I loved their set and the great thing about the Casbah is that you can listen from outside while shooting the shit. Their sound was a little fuzzier than The Electric Soft Parade but you can tell the bands like each other, and at least have commonalities in their sound (and they're labelmates), because they started their set with tESP onstage with them, in what was, to me, a very Arcade Fire moment.

More cowbell!
By the way, at one point we asked this guy how many instruments he plays...it felt like every song he was pulling something else out...strings, horns, you name it. His response was that cowbell doesn't count, so not that many.
After the show, both bands were hanging out with the crowd and the people who stuck around. It occurred to me that it was rapidly approaching 2 am it was time to call it a night. And so I did. And man, did I sleep like a baby.
oh, I forgot to post the setlist for Goldrush.
