Red Fox Tails at West Coast Tavern, 9/2/10

If you haven't been to the West Coast Tavern yet, stop in this Thursday night to see Rosey's next free music showcase with Republic of Letters. A different band plays every Thursday night at 10 and the bartenders make really powerful Mules. I went a couple weeks ago to see my friends, Red Fox Tails.





They play a mix of surf and lounge which goes perfectly with vodka and ginger beer.

This Weekend: Hot Dawgz & Hand Rails at Bear Mountain

When you live in beautiful sunny San Diego, it's hard to already start thinking about things like "winter" and "snow", especially since we still haven't really even had any blazing summer days this year, but this weekend there's a pretty great event for snowboarder and ski enthusiasts.

Hot Dawgz & Hand Rails is the kickoff party to the 2010-2011 ski/snowboard season. The event is free and open to the public, though the competition itself is a pro-invitational. There are trick contests and the like, as well as vendors and drink specials and such for those 21+. They're also screening a couple movies at sundown, so it should be a nice day on the mountain if you feel like a short weekend roadtrip. Hot Dawgz & Hand Rails (HD&HR), the official kickoff to the 2010-11 Southern California ski and snowboard season, returns to Bear Mountain ski area on Saturday, Sept. 18. The free event features some of the world's best pro snowboarders competing on 110 tons of snow for a shot at the $14,000 cash purse in the Pro Invitational Rail Jam. The Red Bull Best Trick Contest will offer up an additional $5,000 for the men's winner and $1,000 for ladies, bringing the total contest purse to $20,000.

The event also includes a vendor booth city offering autograph signings and product giveaways, live DJs, BBQ and the Beach Bar for those 21 and up featuring drink specials from Effen Vodka. The world premieres of two snowboard films, Bear Mountain’s “Paint It Red” and The People’s “Cheers,” will be shown at sundown.

“HD&HR has grown year after year, becoming the official kickoff to the winter snow season,” said Chris Riddle, marketing director for Big Bear Mountain Resorts. “It’s the biggest pre-season party in Southern California and the place to see and be seen.”

HD&HR is free and open to the public; however, the snowboarding competition is for invited, professional snowboarders only.

The Pro Invitational Rail Jam features some of the world’s best pro riders, including Chris Bradshaw, Ted Borland, Dylan Alito, Zak Hale, Jed Anderson and last year’s HDHR winner, Scott Vine. Bear Mountain Pro Team Riders JP Walker, Seth Huot, Joe Sexton, Simon Chamberlain and Lauri Heiskari will judge the contest.

The event begins at 2:00 p.m. Finals are at 6:00 p.m., and the awards ceremony at 7:00 p.m. will be followed by the two world snowboarding movie premieres.

Seth Combs Gets The Bieb For Charity

I thought I'd posted a link to my photos from last week's fundraiser, but alas, I had not. The party at U-31 got off to a slow start, I imagine you working folk couldn't quite get there at 5, but once it got going, there was a great turnout. A representative from the San Diego Humane Society was on hand to receive the total of $966 in donations (well over the $300 for the hair and $700 for hair/beard/mustache). As party-goers got in on the beard and mustache fun, Rob Deez performed with Josh Damigo as his sidekick, and of course they played the Seth Combs song. As Seth got his hair cut, courtesy of Salon Tonic by stylist Dario, Gregory Page performed a set, followed by Long Live Logos. It was a super fun time and Seth was as good a sport as any. All of this now is even funnier as some media outlets try and get a juicy story out of Josh and Seth in regard to Josh's SDMA acceptance speech which he closed with "and Seth Combs can suck my balls".

Things To Do In San Diego: September 13, 2010

Just looking at this week's listings makes me want to take a long nap. Every night of the week has some rad options. I'm a little surprised by Tuesday, to be honest. Who do you think you are, Tuesday? Trying to be Thursday? And when Thursday rolls around, so too does the first ever San Diego Music & Technology Conference at the Hard Rock Hotel. Jeff's Weekly Pick: The Sea of Cortez @ The Casbah Wednesday September 15, 2010

When I saw The Sea of Cortez perform in the Atari lounge at The Casbah a few months ago, my mind triggered a memory of seeing this band sometime in the somewhat distant past. Upon further research, i.e. talking to the band, my recall was correct. The band is from San Diego, relocated to Los Angeles around four years ago due to employment, and was back on the radar in full form. The band has a very distinct sound, filled with visions of the future with a nod to the past. Hard work has indeed paid off and the result is the forthcoming LP, Make It Sound, scheduled for a 2011 release. The Shores, a single from the upcoming album, has garnered regional radio play. The album was mixed at John Vanderslice's Tiny Telephone studios in San Francisco. Until the album hits the stores and the Internet, live shows will have to suffice if one wants to hear (and see) the band. I asked the band how they felt about playing their former stomping grounds and they replied with a firm "anytime". Proof can be found this Wednesday at the Middletown venue. A great way to cure the midweek blues.

Joshua White at Dizzy's, 8/26/10

I shoot a lot of jazz shows too, and there was a great one at Dizzy's a couple weeks ago. The Joshua White Quartet, fronted by the 25-year old piano phenom.



This group features Jason Robinson on saxophones and alto flute, Duncan Moore on drums, and Rob Thorsen on bass.








These guys play around town often, so if you see their names pop up in Rosey's listings, try something new and check out some jazz. Gilbert's jam session on Wednesdays at El Camino is a great time to get some dinner and drinks before walking one block over to the Casbah.

Things To Do In San Diego: September 11-12, 2010

I'm gonna post the full weekend listings without a jump because honestly, I don't suspect I'll be spending much time online between now and tomorrow night. I'm gonna go explore the city just to see how far a $5 all-day SDMTS pass will go. I'm also going to hope that the cosmic sound gods align in my favor tonight so that I can see Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr at Bar Pink AND The Henry Clay People at the Casbah. I was trying to create a playlist of my Sea Wolf videos, but I think I hit my max. San Diego Music & Technology Conference Is Coming!

There are a lot of people involved in the San Diego music community that have attempted to put this city on the map as a center of activity. With tons of new venues cropping up, events like the North Park Music Thing, bands, promoters and more, I'm all for anything that shines a light on music in San Diego. By no means am I well-versed in the world of DJs and electronic artists, but I'm thrilled that there's an event where I can learn and broaden my palette. The San Diego Music & Technology Conference (SDMTC) is the first event of its kind to celebrate the convergence between music producers, enthusiasts and technology innovators. This essential breeding ground for the advancement of electronic music on the left coast will attract electronic music artists, industry professionals, technology innovators and music enthusiasts to the Hard Rock Hotel in San Diego on Thursday and Friday, September 16 and 17, 2010. “SDMTC is an open innovation platform for the advancement of electronic music by bringing the music industry and leading technology companies together,” explains SDMTC co-founder, Roland Ligtenberg. “We wanted to bridge the gap between music and technology experts, between successful and amateur artists, in a setting that will inspire conversation and advance the industry as a whole.” SDMTC will consist of panels, workshops and showcases of the latest trends in music and technology from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day. Simultaneously, poolside music events will be taking place from noon to 6 p.m. at Float, just outside the conference rooms at the Hard Rock Hotel. The evening will be comprised of networking events from 7 p.m. to 2 a.m.

The conference will be brimming with taste makers and experts from various sides of the industries, including two keynote speakers: Jay Warinske, CEO and co-founder of INDIEPOWER.com who has worked with such names as U2, Paul Oakenfold, Black Eyed Peas, Jes, Tiesto, BT and Daft Punk, and Naut Humon, former Director of International Operations for RML, Asphodel Records and AV curator for select portions of the annual ARS Electronica Festival in Austria where he also helped coordinate their Digital Music’s category for ten years. SDMTC will feature two evening networking events, the first of which will be held from 7 p.m. – 2 a.m. on Thursday, September 16 at LoungeSD. This private networking event will be open only to VIP conference pass holders, conference panelists and participants, confirmed press and individuals who buy tickets to the event in advance. This event will feature a hosted bar and an intimate performance by world-renowned DJ, MASON, who's track Exceeder continues to be one of the most progressive and widely-recognized tracks in electronic music, as well as DJ San Proper, DJ Manoman and the winner of the Sonicbids DJ competition. The second after-party event will be held on Friday, September 17 and details will be announced closer to the event. SDMTC was co-founded and is being organized by Dr. Vakas Sial, co-founder of Vegas Music Conference, and Roland Ligtenberg, founder of the San Diego Electronic Music Initiative. This week's free show at West Coast Tavern features Melly Frances & The Distilled Spirits. The band will start playing around 10pm. Come on down and check out some great local music. There's a Blurt about West Coast Tavern in this week's Reader. (Thanks to Dave Good for the nice writeup.) I suspect I'll get to West Coast Tavern a bit early to watch the Saints game so if anyone would like to join me, feel free. They have a projector and a huge wall that makes it a great place to catch the game.

Mark Mothersbaugh Discusses His Music Making Process

I got this interesting little e-mail about a series called the Nokia Inside Track. I know my old school blog design is no indication, but I subscribe to a million newsletters and trades just to stay abreast of technology, music, and the ever-changing music and marketing landscape. This is why I love things like the North Park Music Thing and will also be attending the San Diego Music & Technology Conference. This is why I subscribe to the Lefsetz Letter and Hear 2.0 and The Future Buzz among many, many others. The coolest thing though, is when an artist shares insights. Sometimes this happens when I'm at the Casbah smoking patio chatting with a band after their soundcheck, and sometimes, like in this case, this happens publicly on a cool web series.

Where To Be: Upcoming Events in San Diego

I hope everyone had a great Labor Day weekend. Now it's back to work and I wanted to share some upcoming events, some that I've booked, some I'm involved with as a sponsor or partner, and some that I'm just endorsing.

Perhaps you heard about a little bar bet that went down last month? If not, the short version is that my (sddialedin contributor) Bonnie dared Seth Combs to get a Justin Bieber haircut. The result was a bet that would raise money for the San Diego Humane Society and get the boy to lose the hair if we reached a donation goal of $300. If we reached $700, he'll also lose the beard and facial hair, and let's face it, there's probably plenty of spare change hiding in there already. To celebrate the occasion, we're having a party during Hipster Happy Hour (how fitting!) at U-31 on Wednesday, September 8. The event is FREE, but donations to the San Diego Humane Society will be accepted. The Belly Up has donated tons of tickets to upcoming shows (first come, first serve) and there will be drink/food specials ($3 u-call-its, $1.50 fish tacos). The event starts at 5pm, with performances by Long Live Logos, Gregory Page, and Rob Deez & Josh Damigo. Most important, Seth will get his haircut onstage around 7pm, so bring your cameras. I've got some great bands lined up for the rest of September at West Coast Tavern and I'd love for you all to come check out the free music and have some of their fantastic signature cocktails and delicious food. This Thursday, September 9, we have Melly Frances & The Distilled Spirits. On September 16, Emersen will be sharing their jazz infused indie rock, and on September 23, up and comers Meg & Bryan will take the stage. Again, these shows are free and bands usually kick off around 10pm.

We're also working on September 30 at West Coast Tavern which will be a joint event with SoundDiego.com as well as my official birthday celebration with d/Wolves. This one will also tie in to 30th on 30th, so we might kick it off a bit earlier. I'll update with full details as we confirm, but plan on dropping by before Fluxx Live, Pete Yorn at The Belly Up, or Fountains of Wayne at the Casbah.

This Saturday night, "The Rumble" is back at Bar Pink. This month features Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr and Jamuel Saxon. As always, the show is free and will feature $3 Trumer Pils. DEJJ is getting a ton of buzz and you won't want to miss them. Unless, of course, you're at the Casbah for the Henry Clay People. Super tough call and I can't blame you if you're feeling as torn as I am.

Finally, this Sunday is the San Diego Music Awards. Tickets are nearly sold out, so get them now. The official after party will be at Riley's and have live karaoke with Geezer.
The after party is free to all and is 21+.

He's touring in support of his recent release, Say Goodnight To The World, which came out 8/3 on Fat Possum. You might recognize him as the former frontman for deadboy & The Elephantmen or Acid Bath.
