Things To Do In San Diego: Monday, September 26-Sunday, October 2, 2016

The weekend is over and I only did about half the things I planned on doing but it was still pretty awesome. We stayed in on Friday to be ready for the long day that was Saturday. Nova had morning derby then a soccer game, then I worked the DoSD booth at Adams Avenue for a few hours before going to the final Bay Sessions with The Silent Comedy. Afterward, I caught Geezer at Bar Pink then hung out at the Ken Club. The heat really kicked in on Sunday so I pretty much vegged around in our A/C until we went to see Tegan and Sara at the Observatory. This week has a ton going on. Besides all the usual shows, and weekend Oktoberfests, I turn 40 on Wednesday, so I'll be celebrating at the Rocky Votolato show on Friday at the Casbah for anyone who wants to hang out. Our little team at DoSD have had such an amazing time partnering with the Casbah and Loews Coronado Bay Resort with this summer's Bay Sessions. Admittedly, I missed the El Vez show last week, but was fortunate enough to be there for the Redwoods Revue and Creepxotica. Those were both relatively tame shows, however, and so I'm excited that we're closing out with a bang and The Silent Comedy. It's been ages since I've seen the band play and the setting is really just stunning. The whole thing is free including parking, and the bar offers affordable beer, wine and cocktails for your enjoyment. Don't miss it!

Things To Do In San Diego: Friday, September 23-Sunday, September 25, 2016

It has kinda been a crazy week. Between my workload, Nova's extracurriculars (soccer, piano, and rollerskating), and going to or working at shows (Animal Collective, Futuristic, Foy Vance), and even sneaking in a quick zoo visit yesterday, I'm hoping to lay low today before the craziness of the weekend begins. Nova has derby Saturday morning, then a soccer game, then I'm working at Adams Avenue for a few hours before Bay Sessions at Loews in Coronado. Yikes. That means once again I'm missing Tour De Fat, but what can ya do? It's gonna be a good one...hopefully temperatures stay mild so it doesn't harsh on all the fun. Things To Do In San Diego: Monday, September 19-Thurday, September 22, 2016

I have to say that coming back from a vacation, even a short weekend jaunt, was transitionally challenging. I had no desire to read emails or open my laptop, no desire to tweet or snapchat or facebook, but it's all part of the job so I sucked it up until I was back in the routine. I did enjoy going to see Ray LaMontagne, and on Thursday we had fun taking Nova to see Local Natives. Friday we grilled out and my sister dropped by with the girls which was pretty great. She took Nova for a slumber party so Darren and I could check out Adam Ruins Everything at Music Box and then catch SoundDiego Live at U-31. We also got to watch Nova in her first real soccer game (our girls got crushed), and I worked at the Irenic for This Wild Life. To close out the weekend, we spent the afternoon at Belmont Park for a birthday party, then spent the evening with Nova's maternal Great Uncle. So yeah, not exactly relaxing but what can ya do? I guess there was a lot of fun at KAABOO, but realistically, as long as they keep booking it on this particular weekend of September, I don't imagine I'll ever be able to pull the trigger.

Things To Do In San Diego: Monday, September 12-Sunday, September 18, 2016

I cannot tell a lie. I actually did all of these listings when I did last week's listings knowing I'd have limited wi-fi while on vacation. People always ask why I don't do my calendar further out and the reason is I don't have the time to add shows as venues get around to posting them. It's the very reason why to me, posting these listings here and daily on SoundDiego don't contradict my work with DoSD, because if you want to see what's booked further out than a week, you can search there by any date to see what's on the books. To me, they all just work to make this town a little more vivid and bright. It's been an amazing weekend in Seattle and I can't wait to tell you all about it. Photos: Culture Club @ Humphrey's Concerts By The Bay, 8/24/2016

I'm up in Seattle at the moment, so I thought since I have a little hotel wi-fi I'd share some of my photos from Culture Club. They played at Humphrey's on August 24 and I never thought I'd get to see them in my lifetime, for one because in my adulthood I don't think they toured a whole lot, and when they did, it was always cost prohibitive. So when I was given tickets, I worked it to my advantage and shot away. It was as amazing as I'd hoped. I was maybe 7 when my sister and I walked into the new Target that had just opened in Chula Vista and saw Boy George's glamorous face on the vinyl and we split the $5.99 sale price. I still have the record, though it's definitely been tattered over the years. Flash forward to concert night, and it was amazing. More photos after the jump.

Things To Do In San Diego: Friday, September 9-Sunday, September 11, 2016

So here we are in Seattle, looking forward to a big wedding weekend. I'm both excited and terrified that the wedding party advised us that we will have no AT&T service on the island and no guarantees as to the quality of the wi-fi on premises. Excited because in all of my work responsibilities over the past decade, I've never been able to completely go off the grid, and terrified, well, for pretty much the same reason. And I don't exactly have the kind of jobs where I can just turn on an out of office message and tell people I'll get back to them on Tuesday. But we'll give it a shot. We're staying at the beautiful Grand Hyatt in downtown, and the room and amenities are exceptional, so a huge shout out to Idey for hooking up the friends rate. We're still looking around for a place to stay on Sunday, but I'm thinking we might want to be in more of a neighborhood than the area we're in for the last day. We're open to suggestions. I'm gonna keep it short this week. Labor Day weekend was awesome and I appreciated not having to check email for a couple days. I went to Soda Bar for Awesome Fest on Friday, and The Kills show on Sunday was excellent as was The Creepy Creeps show at the Casbah. I can't even begin to talk about my life right now. Work is a bit out of control, and I'm still just trying to find some balance with the demands on my time and the stuff I love doing, like going to shows and events and basically I never feel caught up. Last week I did get to shoot Culture Club, however, which was AMAZING, being that they were the first record I ever purchased on my own. I also went to The Black Heart Procession, Darren and I also enjoyed the Best of San Diego Party at Liberty Station, Nova had her first soccer scrimmage, I worked at Face to Face, went to the Blackout Party record release party, went to the DoSD Bay Sessions at Loews with Creepxotica, and caught Black Joe Lewis at the Casbah. So how have your last 6 days been? It's the end of the month so I'm missing listings for Black Cat Bar, Sycamore Den, Whistle Stop. Full archives through Labor Day are after the jump.

Last week was pretty great, though I skipped out on David Bazan to be with my family, knowing I would also be out Sunday night for the Redwoods Revue at Loews Coronado Resort. I definitely enjoyed the weekend, and Gregory Alan Isakov was pretty amazing at the Belly Up on Friday, we did some shopping on Saturday, and then the Bay Sessions was pretty incredible, with gorgeous views of the bay and sunset, and lots of good friends and warm vibes. This week is going to be a bit nuts but I'm kinda counting down to a trip we're taking in a few weeks. I hate starting the week with lots of catching up to do, but it appears that's the way it's gonna go. Monday through Sunday archives are after the jump.

Things To Do In San Diego: Friday, August 19-Sunday, August 21, 2016

This weekend has been so dreamy for me when it comes to music. I got to see Rhett Miller on Sunday, one of my most favorites Joshua James on Wednesday, tonight I get to see Gregory Alan Isakov, and David Bazan tomorrow. I can't say it's been all good however, as Nova was kinda sick for her first week of school and work was exhausting. If there's anyone in the world who uses Trello or Asana or any other project management software and finds it actually cuts your work, please let me know how because both are a total pain in my ass. I'm hoping things slow down this weekend, and am looking forward to some good shows, some beach time, some family time, and hopefully catching up on sleep. Don't forget that on Sunday DoSD and Casbah present the first Bayside Session of the year at Loews Coronado Resort for The Redwoods Revue. It's free with RSVP (21+). Things To Do In San Diego: Monday, August 15-Thursday, August 18, 2016

Another weekend behind us and a busy week ahead. After a nighttime swim with Nova's friends on Friday evening, I went to see Lucy Dacus at the Casbah and she definitely exceeded expectation and is someone you should look out for, especially when Matador re-releases her record on September 9. From there, I went to Bar Pink, then the Ken Club. It was a good night. The kiddo was a little sick on Saturday so we all laid low and hung around the abode. On Sunday, Nova and Darren spent the day volunteering at the Dollhouse with paint and construction jobs while I worked at home (to make sure you have these listings and stuff) and by the time they came home, I was pretty much out the door to catch Rhett Miller at Soda Bar. It was an awesome show, and the first time in ages that I posted up front and center stage for an entire show. When it was all done, I went to Casbah for Dillinger Escape Plan, then closed the night at Scotty Pants' Karaoke at the Hideout. This week has so many amazing shows and Nova goes back to school, so I will be trying again to reestablish the work/life balance. Monday through Thursday archives are after the jump.

The Observatory had some big changes this week. Friday's Jeremih show has been postponed but no new date announced. Same with Cold War Kids. Additionally, three shows-- Young Dolph, Rich The Kid, and RiFF RAFF-- have all been moved to Music Box. The good news is that several new shows were announced and go on sale today: Warpaint, Jai Wolf, Rae Sremmurd, Post Malone, Clams Casino and more. I'm not sure I'm going to keep posting these shows here because they're no longer providing me art, but we'll see what happens. All shows on the books are after the jump.

91X Announces BeerX San Diego 8.27.16

This came through the inbox yesterday and I thought I'd share in case you hadn't heard:

91X and Rockstar Beer Present "BeerX San Diego," happening Saturday, August 27 from 7:00 PM to 10:00 PM at Liberty Station in Point Loma, 2640 Historic Decatur Road.

Over 100 craft beers have been curated by organizers, and will be offered in unlimited samples to beer fans during the event.

A main stage will feature live music by bands with members who are also notable in the craft beer community, including Paul Segura, Brewmaster of R&D at Karl Strauss Brewing Company, and his band Rifftide. Additional performing bands include local favorites Zebrahead, and tribute bands Blink 180 True and Green Today.

“Beer and rock and roll have always been synonymous, and a lot of local musicians are also really skilled brewers,” 91X Program Director Halloran. “Brewing is a task done almost completely behind the scenes, so I think it’s pretty cool to bring guys like Paul Segura on stage and give them the spotlight they deserve, plus I would like to see these guys all coiffed-up onstage while we all quaff down the brews they have proffered.”

VIP tickets are available for early entry at 6:00 PM. All attendees must be 21+ years of age.

Photos: The Last Shadow Puppets @ Observatory North Park, 8.5.2016

I haven't posted any photo sets in awhile, so I don't know why now, but although these aren'tmy greatest photos ever, I had so much fun having my camera in hand again. It was also super challenging. The pit was full of photogs, the lighting was mostly red and saturated from behind, and then there were bursts of white light from the front. Still, it was an amazing show and I'm not one to refer to musicians as sexy, but the whole performance, from having a full string section to the interplay between Alex and the crowd and between all of the musicians on stage was pretty damn sexy. I do my best with the gear I've got, but my objective is a few nice photos for Instagram for my various account responsibilities, so if you want a photo set of the whole band, you'll have to look up someone else's pics.
