Ransisku (Taken 6.24.25) |
If I try to just keep keeping up with the news, this post will just never get published, so here we are at the end of June and there's SO MUCH HAPPENING, in case you weren't aware by the dozens of emails from your favorite organizations asking for money for the end of their fiscal year and beginning of a new one. It's pretty atrocious out in this world right now, so I've been trying to find joy in my little bubble, but even then, now we have to think about the madness happening across all three branches of our federal government and the reverberations that is causing across the country, our state, and our region and man, it's fucking dire... But we are mere humans and only have the capacity for so much dread, so please do what it takes to find your own joy. For me, that has continued to be in photography and music and my zoo time, my Seaworld time, going to La Jolla Cove super late at night, shopping when I need nothing, and time with Darren and family when our schedules allow.
Stay safe out there. C-19 is seeing a resurgence and they're calling a symptom "razorblade throat", so do your damnedest to steer clear. Nolite te bastardes carborundorum.

- ZOO GOSS:
- San Diego Zoo has announced the arrival of two 3 year old Tasmanian devil brothers, named Flotsam and Jetsam. We also got news that Ransisku, the Andean Bear born December 10, 2022, has now been transferred to the Queens Zoo in New York. He was definitely a fan favorite and when I have a minute to get my shit together, I'll post a retrospective of some photos of him. Meanwhile, Saba the pregnant giraffe still hasn't delivered, but there was a giraffe born recently at the Safari Park. I also heard Safari has done some upgrades to Lion Camp, but it's been hard to get up there with their shortened summer hours.
- SDZWA sent an email to members that they're in negotiations with the City for paid parking for the Zoo, despite their lots being entirely under SDZWA control by contract and deed. Members are bracing for information, which is supposed to be announced by the end of July and could be implemented as soon as September. Anything short of FREE parking for members will be unacceptable to everyone I know. Give me a placard like I got with my America The Beautiful pass, and be done with it. As for the City of San Diego, they have projected revenues for FY2025 from parking meters at $9,600,000. For FY2026, that expectation jumps to $28,040,000. This will be achieved by more meters throughout the City; "flexible pricing" around events like conventions, Padres games, and concerts; charging for meters on Sundays; expanding meter hours to 8pm; and this heinous plan to charge for parking in Balboa Park, San Diego Zoo, and Mission Bay (still pending discussion with the Coastal Commission).

- SEAWORLD GOSS:
- Seaworld hours are expanded right now for their Summer Spectacular. Not gonna lie, I've been going almost every night because they have an incentive program to earn rewards after a certain amount of check-ins. I'm shooting for another Animal Interaction after 30 visits. The nightly fireworks still bring much disdain across the City, but SW seems uninspired to stop.

- US GOVERNMENT DESTRUCTION:
- TFG:
- QOTW: "I write to you a lot about the fact that where things start is not where they end up with the (TFG) administration. Here, we see that proposition on full display. (TFG) started by firing inspectors general without giving Congress the 30 days of notice required by law before doing that. Congress didn’t object. (TFG) kept going. He started dismantling executive branch agencies. Even though that tramples on Congress’ power of the purse, they didn’t do much more than whimper. Then the White House tried to tie receipt of funds Congress has set aside to help states with transportation infrastructure to promises to help with immigration enforcement. Still, Congress did nothing. And the Supreme Court? The Court that held that there was virtually nothing a sitting president could do that would violate criminal law? They haven’t exactly given the president reason to pump the brakes either. Which is how we find ourselves at this juncture." - Joyce Vance/Civil Discourse (6.22.25)
