Things To Do In San Diego: Tuesday, April 30-Monday, May 6, 2019
I'm always a cheerleader on why everyone should get out to shows, and then gas hits $5 a gallon and rideshare prices increase, Game of Thrones is on TV plus a ton of other stuff I need to read, watch, shoot, or write, and I have to carefully think about the shows I get out to. Last week I only hit Superorganism on Tuesday and worked at the Kiefer show on Saturday. The rest of the week was chill. I did some cleaning out of over 100 old drafts on this site, caught up with old work, caught up with lots of reading, and binged a decent share of TV. I was trying to get my sleep cycle back to normal which maybe finally clicked on Saturday, so we were up early and ran all over town doing the San Diego Book Crawl, then went to Nova's futsal, then a couple more book shops, a nice pre-birthday dinner for Nova, and then I worked at Soda Bar. Sunday we hit up EarthFair, hit our 7th stop of the book crawl, then had a little family birthday party for Nova with my fam. On Monday, my sister and I went to the Zoo for the final chance to see the pandas, and in the evening while Nova was at soccer, I went back to La Jolla Cove for the sea lions. The listings are taking longer and longer and quite a few venues haven't updated for May, but what I've got through Monday are after the jump.

San Diego Zoo Bids Farewell to Panda Program | Last Chance Views Through April 29
San Diegans were shocked when the San Diego Zoo announced an end to the panda program. Most of us understood that this program was always meant to be temporary, but after 23 years, we kinda thought it would be forever. I remember when the pandas first came to San Diego in 1987 for a 100 day stint. I think I was in 6th grade and my mom bought me a bright red panda shirt that I wore until it wouldn't fit anymore--maybe the only time we've ever paid full price for a souvenir, ever.
When the pandas came back in 1996, I'd spend my lunch between classes at City College hanging out at the Zoo. I've been lucky to attend a couple behind the scenes and media events over the years and I'm heartbroken that they're not gonna be around anymore, particularly after the investment by the Zoo in the breeding program. Like many, I'm holding out hope that this isn't goodbye forever, just goodbye for now, and now that Bai Yun is ready to go into retirement, some new breedable pandas will make their way here and the program won't really be over. Pro-tip: The lines for pandas are going to be insane this weekend. If you don't want to wait in the lines but want a last glimpse, you can see the pandas from overhead while crossing the bridge from the treehouse to the elephants or just check out the panda cam.
I definitely went through some pangs of nostalgia digging through my old photos. Check out some more snaps after the jump and check out the Zoo's press release.

Things To Do In San Diego: Tuesday, April 23-Monday, April 29, 2019
I was trying to find a picture to post this week and realized I didn't shoot a single show this week. Actually, that's not entirely true...we did go to Kero Kero Bonito last Monday and Saturday I worked the Big Thief show and snapped a couple pics, but it was Nova's spring break so we were mostly running around whenever I wasn't chained to my laptop for work. We drove out to Anza-Borrego on Tuesday and hiked Palm Canyon and The Slot. During Nova's soccer on Wednesday, I went back to see the Sea Lions in La Jolla and later that night attempted to see Ages and Ages on Wednesday but were too late, so ended up at Death Cab for Karaoke instead. My Kero interview fell through on Thursday, so I skipped going to the second show and got hours of work done instead with a little break at Fiesta Island with the dog, who is still limping but begging for walks nonetheless. Same kinda went for Friday so on Saturday we could be up early for Nova's futsal, then her friends' Easter party, and then the amazing Big Thief show at the Irenic, and Sunday we just had a short late afternoon jaunt to the zoo. I love having family time, but it's exhausting trying to still keep up with work while trying to keep up with the fam. Low key week ahed because it's a massive weekend. Listings through Monday are after the jump.

Plaza De Panama Committee Dissolved: Jacobs Plan Is (Supposedly Officially) Dead!
This week, the committee tasked with raising money for the Jacobs Plaza de Panama Project officially dissolved. They blamed lack of support by Councilman Chris Ward for a revised 2 phase project--essentially "let us build a parking garage and ruin the bridge but we won't do any of the other things we promised to fix the park."
Kind of exactly what SDSU is now doing with the stadium site.
I think Jacobs realized this hot-button issue would stain the mayoral campaign of Todd Gloria, who was disappointingly a huge supporter of the project despite the massive outcry from his constituents. I imagine some new outrageous and unnecessary proposal will arise once Jacobs gets his guy in as mayor. Our council is spineless when it comes to standing up against money. I mean, they were going to allow NAMING RIGHTS. In the park! AYFKM? I wrote about all of this in February but here are some new stories confirming the dissolution of the fundraising committee.
And since these articles can't even try to act like they weren't all in favor of this gross project, let me remind you this plan would (1) build a parking structure (2) remove all parking from the inside of the park to be replaced with PAID parking in said structure (3) cut into the historic bridge (4) allow naming rights for ego-driven "philanthropists," among many other things. And don't get it twisted, the reason the City couldn't go over budget is because once they hit a certain amount of City contribution, it has to go to voters and they know the voters would overwhelmingly vote no.
Voice of San Diego doesn't even try to be unbiased, being that Jacobs is the single largest VOSD supporter: The Plaza de Panama Project Is Officially Dead
Plaza De Panama Project Dead for Now (NBC)
Official Statement of the Plaza De Panama Committee
In other Balboa Park news...wtf happened to the dragon?? The "Nikigatory" by Niki de Saint Phalle is gone from in front of the Mingei and all I could find was this old article from 2017 about the Mingei's desire to increase their curb appeal. I also found this old proposal from 2009 for The House of Charm, the building which houses the Mingei. If anyone knows the updated deal there, I'd love to know because I've now gone down a three-day rabbit hole of old Council meeting notes and subcommittee minutes which has made me sideline actual work that I should be doing.

Things To Do In San Diego: April 16-22, 2019
I was trying to figure out why I just couldn't for the life of me get out of bed on Monday. Eventually, I forced myself up to do listings and now realize that it was a crazy busy week and I'm maybe low-key sleep deprived. On Tuesday, I went to Cirque du Soleil's Volta in Del Mar, on Wednesday we went to see the sea lions of La Jolla, then to the Gulls game, then to see JS Ondara at Casbah and shut the night down at the Office. Friday night I went to the Seals Lacrosse game, and Ssaturday we went to Nova's futsal game, hiked around Chollas Park, went to the San Diego Sockers game, then went to the John Vanderslice show at Soda Bar and shut the night down at Pants Karaoke at the Tower Bar and Sunday was low-key celebrating with my family for my sister's birthday and of course, Game of Thrones (of which we watched twice). So throw in work and driving around for soccer and a regular adult life and obligations and I'm a little burnt. But I got these down and that's a good start. This week I'm planning on both KKB shows, working at Big Thief on Saturday, and hopefully making it to Ben Kweller on Monday. I might sprinkle in a couple more shows along the way, but it's Nova's spring break, so we're also trying to have some family fieldtrips if we can. Listings through Monday are after the jump.

Things To Do In San Diego: Tuesday, April 9-Monday, April 15, 2019
These listings are PACKED and I didn't even include Couchella. Between Escalera Fest and Record Store Day activities this weekend, there's so much to look forward to. Last week, we laid low as much as we could...me still with a cough, my dog with her sprained leg, and Darren with his cracked rib were kind of a pathetic bunch. Still, I had a big Wednesday with a little Fiesta Island action with Darren and Fi, and after shot Bad Suns at the Observatory, caught Low Cut Connie at Casbah, and had a little after-show fun at Blonde. Thursday was a big work day and chill family evening, where our only big adventure was walking to Vons instead of driving, and Friday we enjoyed the Multicultural Food Fest at Nova's school, and by night Darren and I went to see Girlpool, Hatchie (pictured above), and Kitten, and closed the night down at Ken Club. I worked at the NP Festival of Beers on Saturday, we tried out Sister Ray's for the first time (the burgers are amazing, but the chili-cheese fries are where it's at), and on Sunday we hung out with my parents to celebrate their 49th Anniversary. Monday is my day to compile all of these listings (which keep growing and growing) but we did adventure to the La Jolla Seals to gawk over all the sweet little pups while Nova was as soccer practice. This week's agenda is a little over-committed, so I might have to trim it, but right now it looks like I'll be going to Volta, the Gulls game, JS Ondara, The Messthetics, the Seals game, Nova's futsal game, John Vanderslice, and Kero Kero Bonito, plus we're still trying to circle back to the desert and the Zoo, which has extended hours through April 21st for Yaycation. Listings for all this madness are after the jump.
This Week: La Escalera Fest Ocho
I had to kinda dig around to find the info for La Escalera Fest Ocho, which takes over several bars this weekend including The Office, Tower Bar, Bar Pink, Soda Bar, Spaec, and Moustache in Tijuana, so I thought I'd share the actual poster with all the time breakdowns. For tickets and more information, go here. I imagine any last minute cancellations or such will be posted on their Facebook page. And if you're going, please do yourself a favor and walk or catch a rideshare. We don't need a bunch of drunk punks on Jump bikes or Lime Scooters breaking skulls and getting DUIs.

4.20 House Show: Band Argument | Pregnant | Glow! | Chorduroy
Though there are many events happening on 4/20, considering checking out the Band Argument/Pregnant/Glow!/Chorduroy house show.
Members of local band Chorduroy have recently renovated their living room to include a full stage for artists to perform on. After Chorduroy, Glow! takes the stage. Glow! are a relatively new band on the scene, but are making a name for themselves. They only have one song out, but it showcases the potential that they have for future endeavors. Their single, "If It Were Me", welds together Strokes-esque rock form laden with jazzy chords reminiscent of Steve Lacy. After Glow! comes Pregnant, an esteemed experimental rock group from Sacramento spearheaded by D'niel Trudeau. Their latest full length, Duct Tape, is an adventurous and cosmic record that reads as tonally interesting / dense as an Animal Collective or Ariel Pink record. Aaaand they're even better live! Finishing off the night is Band Argument, a local band on the rise who have set out to fuse DIY rock-aesthetics with trigger-happy MIDI carnage. For fans of Palm, Guerrilla Toss, Deerhoof... In between sets, DJ COLDPIZZA will be improvising self described "portal music" with analog instruments such as a 909 drum machine.

Things To Do In San Diego: Tuesday, April 2-Monday, April 8, 2019
The other day I read an article about a guy who intentionally wrote fake news and while fascinating and infuriating, the first sentence left me a little stunned.
Jestin Coler seems like your run-of-the-mill middle-aged guy.Wait, back up. 42 is middle-aged? That's my age, and I definitely don't think of myself as middle-aged, nor do I feel that way. But I guess in a purely mathematical sense it's accurate. But lately I've been feeling younger than ever. We're hiking and walking a ton, checking out favorite spots and discovering new ones, and I've just been trying to lead a less vampire-y life. So last week we went out to Slot Canyon in Ocotillo Wells, except I went out to the Office afterward, and maybe it wore me down because then I was sick for the rest of the week. On top of that, my dog sprained her leg and Darren broke a rib at soccer, so we didn't really do much the rest of the week as we all convalesced, until I had to work at the Irenic on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. We did get out for a few hours on Saturday we did go to Balboa Park in the morning for Nova's first futsal game then back a couple hours later for a kiddo's birthday party.
The 42-year-old lives on a quiet street in a Los Angeles suburb with his wife and two kids.
This week I'll be downing the Airborne™, shooting Bad Suns at the Observatory, seeing Girlpool at the Casbah, and then hopefully back to healthy enough to get some sunshine.
Full listings through Monday are after the jump.
