Things To Do In San Diego: Monday, August 31-Monday, September 7, 2015

It's the end of the month and September is almost upon us, but as usual, not everyone has updated their calendars, but it's also a holiday week so not a ton of stuff going on. I'll update Bar Pink, Gallagher's, Sycamore Den, Whistle Stop, and The Balboa later this week. This weekend was pretty great, plenty of family time at home, San Diego Freak Out at the Casbah on Saturday night, and some beach time on Sunday. It's a mellow week, but archives through Monday (since I included the holiday) are after the jump.

Things To Do In San Diego: Saturday, August 29-Sunday, August 30, 2015

It has been brutal the past couple days, so we've been doing anything we can to be out of our non-air-conditioned apartment. On Wednesday, that meant going to The Lafayette for the Pre-Tour De Fat party and silent auction, where we hung out in the pool as they showed Unreal, an epic mountain bike flick. On Thursday, we were all about dog beach with Ficus (and even busted out the selfie stick that I scored at the Wired Comic-Con Party). I went to the Melvins show, but it was suffocatingly hot so I didn't even try to shoot photos. Some friends and I shut down the night at Bar Pink and Livewire. On Friday, we went to a friend's house to swim into the late afternoon. Nova has been with us full time for the past couple weeks which we love, but it means fewer nights out for this old lady, but I'm hoping that we can catch some fun stuff this weekend like maybe the Imperial Avenue Street Fair or the Centennial Concert, but most likely you can find us around large bodies of water. Saturday and Sunday archives are after the jump.

Things To Do In San Diego: Wednesday, August 26-Friday, August 28, 2015

We're trying to get back in the groove of school but San Diego is such a temptress, even when it's raining. On Monday after school we went to Mission Trails and played around the dam and on Tuesday we went to the San Diego Zoo because the animals seem to liven up after a drizzle and NightTime Zoo ends really soon, so we're trying to take advantage. It's great being in this groove, but it means my dedicated work hours are like 10am-2pm and then after Nova's bedtime, so like 10pm until I can't keep my eyes open anymore, which is usually around 3am. I hear that today is National Dog Appreciation Day and apparently California was ranked first based on how regularly we as dog owners engage in thankful, grateful, and loving behaviors with our dogs. So with that, today you get another snap of Ficus. Wednesday through Friday archives are after the jump.

Upcoming Casbah & Casbah Presents Shows (Updated 8/25)

I just sent a new Casbah newsletter out, so keep your eyes peeled. There's a presale for Mac DeMarco happening now (password casbah) and for Ratatat on Thursday (same password). Lots of new shows and I'm super excited about Givers and Other Lives, but I'm kinda bummed that Yacht and Ought are playing the same night at different venues. This is a pretty fun week at the Casbah if you need to switch it up from all the indie rock, it's a lot more face-melty/rock-heavy this week. September shows and beyond are after the jump.

Things To Do In San Diego: Monday, August 24-Tuesday, August 25, 2015

I had a pretty great weekend, though I missed Savages which, according to at least three people, was the best Casbah show of the year. But I just couldn't muster the energy since I'd be out every night since Wednesday. On Friday we went to an afterschool swim party, then the San Diego Magazine Best of San Diego Party and then to see Morrissey at the Observatory. On Saturday we spent the day with my sister and nieces at Law Street where Nova actually got up on a surfboard for the first time. I'm gonna have to work on my surf photography, apparently. Afterward, we had an awesome dinner at Mona Lisa and I went to the Casbah then Bar Pink with Eric, my NBC cohort. Sunday was great, too, with an afternoon at Shelter Island with my family and dinner at Point Loma Sea Foods. I would have liked to go to Savages, but I had to get all of these listings done and just couldn't pull the trigger. Monday and Tuesday archives are after the jump.

Things To Do In San Diego: Friday, August 21-Sunday, August 23, 2015

This has been a pretty amazing week. On Monday we rode bikes and hung out with my family at Mission Bay and then went to nighttime zoo, Tuesday was all about boogie boarding in South Mission, Wednesday Nova had Piano and I worked for Metz at the Casbah, and yesterday we got to see Silversun Pickups acoustic at House of Blues, then worked at the Irenic for The Drums and Froth, and then I went to see Chris Farren, Dave Hause, and my favorite, Rocky Votolato at the Casbah. Pretty epic. Tonight is more of the same with the Best of San Diego Party, a photo pass for Morrissey, and then Vieux Farka Toure at the Casbah. Life is sweet. Friday through Sunday archives are after the jump.

Upcoming Shows at the Observatory North Park (Updated 8/21)

I'm hearing that last night's Morrissey concert was pretty epic. Lots of new shows have been added in November so take a look. Keep an eye out next week, too, for more big announcements. In the meantime, here's everything on the books. (after the jump)

Things To Do In San Diego: Monday, August 17-Thursday, August 20, 2015

It was a scorcher, but what a great weekend. I laid low a lot because when my apartment says 90 degrees, I'm pretty non-functional, but I also had to save energy for Tiki Oasis. I ended up pouring drinks in the Casbah suite on both Friday and Saturday nights and as a Tiki Oasis virgin, I have to say that if I'm invited to work again next year, I just might get a room and join in the fun. This weekend was also the NBC #ClearTheShelters event, where NBC reported that 776 pets found new homes on Saturday, and over 16,000 were placed nationwide. This truly made me proud to work for NBC and though we didn't actually participate ourselves, we were home with Ficus, grateful that we got her from the Escondido Humane Society before someone else could. If you're still looking for a great pet, you can always pay the nominal adoption fees at the County Animal Shelters and various Humane Societies who always seem to fill right back up.

Anyway, this is a busy week in music with two sold out Morrissey shows at the Observatory. I'll also be selling merch for Metz on Wednesday, and The Drums on Thursday before I go to the Casbah to see my favorite, Rocky Votolato. Friday is the Best of San Diego party which I might duck out of a tiny bit early to catch the second Moz show. Monday through Thursday archives are after the jump.

2015 San Diego Music Award Nominees Announced!

Earlier today, the San Diego Music Academy (of which I am a nominating/voting member), announced the 2015 San Diego Music Award Nominees. They send them out in a particular order by best of their genre or category, which the general public can vote on, and best actual song/record/recording within a genre that are voted on only by the Academy. So you can see the list in their order, here, or below, which I've taken the liberty of reorganizing by assuming I know the audience of sddialedin.com and what you really care about. There's always some bickering and bitching about categories and whatnot, but ultimately this event takes place to raise money for the San Diego Music Foundation which puts Taylor Guitars in the hands of local students.

This year's event takes place on Monday, October 5 at Humphrey's. Performers this year are Louis XIV, Big Mountain, Cody Lovaas, Berkley Hart Selis Twang, B-Side Players, Gregory Page & His Accompanists, and Lifetime Achievement Award Recipient, Peter Sprague. You can buy tickets here.

Full list of nominees are after the jump.

Upcoming Casbah and Casbah Presents Shows (Updated 8/13)

Alrighty, another update to Casbah shows. Not a whole lot of additions this week, except for DJ Artistic's Battle Bot next week, and new shows with Yacht, Author & Punisher, and the rebooking of Lucy's Fur Coat for two nights in September. There are some great shows this weekend and into next week, including one of my all time favorite songwriter/performers, Rocky Votolato, who stops in to the Casbah on Thursday with Dave Hause and Chris Farren (the awesome voice of Fake Problems). September shows and beyond are after the jump.

Things To Do In San Diego: Friday, August 14-Sunday, August 16, 2015

This week has been crazy! On Monday, Darren and I bounced all over the place from Ryn Weaver at the Irenic, to !!! at Casbah, to the Hideout, which was closing, then to The Office for David J. The rest of week was awesome, too, between Hot Chip & Yacht, and last night with The Struts and Big Bad Buffalo, my mind was kinda blown. Plus we had a fun beach day, had a few nice family dinners out, hung out at Waterfront Park, and now Nova is back in school. Tonight I'm bartending (!) in the Casbah lounge of Tiki Oasis and tomorrow I'll be slinging merch for Fu Manchu. Hopefully sitting in an air conditioned room or submerging myself in water somewhere is in the cards for this scorching weekend. Friday through Sunday archives are after the jump.

Best of San Diego Party Is Just Around The Corner!

San Diego has become a city of Festivals. Besides all of the street fairs and festivals in every neighborhood throughout the summer, it feels like there's a new beer or wine festival every month. Some of those tickets can get pretty pricey, and years of going to many of these I can honestly tell you, there is no better annual party than San Diego Magazine's Best of San Diego Party. There's a seemingly endless array of food from the City's best restaurants and chefs along, with beer and wine to pair it with. There's music and entertainment, too, and everyone is dressed all snazzy, and it's like a massive who's who of San Diego. If you know me, you know I hate "best" lists, because I think the word should be "favorites", but in the case of this event, it really does bring out the Best of San Diego.

This year's event takes place on August 21 from 6:30-9:30 pm. That means it's the same night as the second Morrissey show, so if you're seeing Moz, you have to sit this one out, but otherwise, you should do whatever it takes to be there.

The Best of San Diego Party 2015
August 21, 2015
6:30-9:30pm
at Liberty Station
2640 Historic Decatur Road

Things To Do In San Diego: Monday, August 10-Thursday, August 13, 2015

My updates have been somewhat infrequent lately because it's summer and we've been fully taking advantage of every minute we can. Along with our trip, we've spent tons of time at local beaches, at pools, at Aquatica, at playgrounds and parks, at the Zoo and Safari Park, and lots of time with family and friends. It has been a pretty great run, but Nova goes back to school this week, so I can get back to a little more posting. Monday through Thursday archives are after the jump.

Things To Do In San Diego: Monday, August 3- Sunday, August 9, 2015

We're already on the 3rd day of the new month and a gaggle of venues still haven't posted August calendars. I'm looking at you Sycamore Den, Hideout, 710 Beach Club, Gallaghers, and Whistle Stop. I'll try to update if those come online. In the meantime, there are a grip of amazing shows this week, so 'm looking forward to Quartyard this afternoon, working at Tame Impala, and checking out Unknown Mortal Orchestra to get the week started. Monday through Sunday archives are after the jump.
