Rosey's Diary and Newsy Things: SDMA Winner List | Gloria Submits Revised Budget | Floods Ravage Brazil | New C-19 "FLiRT" Strain Symptoms |

Baby Langur (Taken 5.12.24)

I've been watching the Emily D Baker livestreams of the Karen Read Trial because as we inch closer to November, the news is just hard to watch. My little family has a ritual where every night we watch the monologues or features from the late night shows - Seth Meyers, Colbert, Kimmel, and Fallon - and even those are hard to watch sometimes. The coverage of TFG is just too much and the comedians' impressions of him are just as bad as seeing his stupid face and hearing his actual voice. So I've been watching this trial, or listening to the stream while I work, or while I'm walking around the zoo, and I kind of regret it because the prosecution is so bad so the case has ceased to be interesting. All of this to say, I don't really have much to post this week. With Darren on the job hunt and having more time together, I feel stretched a little thin. We did have a great time at the Waxahatchee show on Tuesday, but after I came home to get my listings going and write a work newsletter, so today I felt pretty sluggish, though I still went to visit the apes and then D and I went to a River Days event to see the future site of The River Center at Grant Park. I still feel like I have a million things to do tonight but first things first, I'm posting this, then finishing listings. They'll be up in the morning.
Stay safe out there.

Things To Do In San Diego: Thursday, February 16--Wednesday, February 22, 2023: Bass Drum of Death | Kaki King | The Lone Bellow | Karl Denson | El Tri | Sea Wolf | Steve Lacy | White Reaper | Daring Greatly | Silent Comedy |

I certainly love a three-day weekend and all your favorite places are having fun little dance parties and whatnot, so if you're looking to shake your ass, there are plenty of opportunities to do that. I'll be working at Bass Drum of Death on Thursday night and am hoping to pop into the Sea Wolf show on Saturday night but no other major plans beyond that, though I got a cool invite to The Legion home opener but don't really have anyone to go with so I might have to table that for another time. There's also the world premiere of The Silent Comedy's documentary and a live performance up at the Brooks Theatre which I'm sure will be a super cool night.

On Monday night, the San Diego Music Foundation announced the nominees for the San Diego Music Awards. Tickets are on sale for the event on April 25th, and voting for some reason is running through DoSD so you can do that here

Things To Do In San Diego: Wednesday, April 20, 2022-Tuesday, April 26, 2022: Hasan Minhaj | Hot Chip | Spellling | Electric Six | Dent May | Earthfair | Orville Peck | Beabadoobee |

Beabadoobee Appears At Humphrey's On Tuesday Night (Taken 10.18.2019)

I was having a conversation with a friend about whether I'll ever get back to the pre-pandemic lifestyle of three or four or seven shows a week and I was quick to answer that it's just not in the cards for me anymore. For starters, I've given up rideshare apps entirely. After they poured millions into Prop 22 and since D quit driving, I'd just rather not support, which makes some shows logistically a little more challenging. I love public transit, but it is made for daytime commuters, not so much late night revelers. Nova is older, so it's not like we can just put her to bed and head out on the town, it has to be a little more planned when we're leaving, or for those all-ages shows she might like, if I can request and secure three tickets instead of just one or two, which publicists generally hate and decline. On top of all that, we're still helping my dad three or four times a week before his bedtime, which ends up taking an hour or so with the drive, right when a headliner would be coming on at most venues, so we just have to arrange too much with our schedules.

And I assure you, I'm not complaining, but after two years, life is different. I'm different. The risks assessment is different, where none existed before. So you might see me bopping around at shows even if that means fewer of them. And I'll work the shows I'm asked to. But I also may show up 5 minutes before a headliner and cut out halfway through the set just to get by. It's all different. But that doesn't mean that I don't thoroughly encourage massive enjoyment of the great shows coming to town. If this week was pre-pandemic, for example, you'd probably see me at Hasan Minhaj, Wallows, Hot Chip and then racing to catch Spellling afterward, Dent May, Earthfair, Pink Mountaintops, Orville Peck, and beabadoobee. In this life right now, I may actually make it to one or two of those, if I'm really ambitious. It doesn't mean I'm any less grateful that we have amazing options in this City. But I still think if you're inside you should be masking up.

Congratulations to all the SDMA nominees and winners. I hope it was a great night.

Stay safe out there.

Things To Do In San Diego: Wednesday, August 25-Tuesday, August 31, 2021 | Carlsbad Music Festival, Punk Rock Karaoke, Electric Six, State To State and More | Music News: SDMA Results and More |

Ozomatli (Taken 2.1.2020)

There is a lot of music news locally, nationally and internationally, but I've tried to limit to just a few interesting links, including the GoFundMe pages for Matt Hoyt and Louis Brazier, the San Diego Music Award winners, and a couple other stories that caught my eye this week.

This afternoon I had the delight of catching up with Josh Damigo who sounds like he's doing great besides his frustration that he's the only member of his family who is vaccinated and the many excuses his family members make for not getting the shot. I've noticed the news is starting to say things like "he was waiting on a shot because..." instead of calling out the unvaccinated as responsible for their own illness and deaths, not to mention the chances that they spread the virus to anyone and everyone around them. It's irresponsible and it's gross. If you guys are going out to show, you damn well better be vaccinated, you better wear your masks, and stay home if you're experiencing any symptoms, which can be as minor as a headache or the sniffles, until you can test and make sure you're not carrying the virus. I don't want to see more posts from more sick friends who were living their best lives until they weren't because they're unvaccinated and in the ICU.

Stay safe out there.

Things To Do In San Diego: Tuesday, August 10-Monday, August 16,2021 | San Diego Music Awards Showcases | Atmosphere & Cypress Hill | Bad Cop/Bad Cop | and more!!

Sold Out Show At Casbah (Taken 1.18.2020)

I know it's a day late, but here's this week's basic listings. I thought Winston's had closed for good, but glad to see they survived the pandemic after all. More and more venues are mandating masking for all and some are getting onboard with proof of vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test, so be sure to use the googles to find out what restrictions may be in place. With shows starting at Pechanga Arena, it's important to remember California has different rules for "mega-events" so vax or test are mandatory for attendance because of CDPH protocols. I'm still laying low, especially with my dad fresh out of the hospital and unfortunately I only think our numbers are going to up once all the schools are back in session so I may be sitting out for awhile, but after talking with a friend I hadn't talked to since the beginning of the pandemic, I totally get how someone living alone or with no family nearby or who doesn't engage with seniors or kids is feeling the pull to get out into the world, so I'm sorry if I've been narrow visioned. Still, it's a little scary out there so do the best you can to look out for yourself.

Stay safe out there.

CoViD-19 Diary | Streaming Watchlist | Music News | Finding Neowise

Cheetah Cub at San Diego Zoo Safari Park (7.18.2020)

Deep breath. So yesterday I was on a rampage, but today was a nice reset and a much more chill day. The world is still just as messed up, but sometimes you have to turn it off the best you can. So I did. Earlier this week I mentioned I spiderwebbed my phone screen and today my insurance (Asurion with AT&T) sent out a technician who fixed my phone in his van for a $29 deductible. We pay a lot for the insurance but was super impressed with the service and the guy was so nice and professional.
As I'd said in yesterday's meltdown, we didn't plan on going anywhere this weekend, but after watching too much TV, Darren and Nova nudged me to do Safari Park. It was slightly more crowded than it has been the past few visits when we do the end of the day from about 5 to 8pm, but I think the anti-maskers just aren't showing up anymore, so even though there were more people, they're all pretty respectful about masks and distance, and I noticed even if people have drinks or food, they're masking between drinks/bites if they're doing it while walking around. And both the cheetah baby and one of the lion females came right up to me at their windows. We'll probably return on Sunday.
After Safari Park closed, we decided to try to catch Comet Neowise, so we wandered. Instead of going west on San Pasqual, we went east toward Ramona and kinda just cruised around until we could find a good elevated and dark spot which was a deadend somewhere off a road called Highland Valley Road, and though I hadn't even brought my tripod, we were able to see the comet with binoculars and eventually the naked eye once we knew what we were looking for. To be honest, just being out there so remote and seeing the stars was pretty nice.
That led to a nice music-filled drive home and all of us content with our day. Darren's now playing music, Nova is asleep, and I'm catching up on Housewives and finishing this update. And we're maybe getting our ants under control with our Terro traps so gotta find the bright side, sometimes.

CoViD-19: San Diego Cases Increase by 1030 from Friday To Sunday | Amur Leopard Cubs Are Cute AF | San Diego Music Awards Stream Monday

I have had quite a lovely weekend. On Friday we did La Jolla Cove as planned, Saturday we lounged around and Darren grilled some grub, then we went to the San Diego Zoo for the final two hours they were open. My downstairs neighbors moved out, so last night I took full advantage and got to long ignored cleaning and organizing. It's much easier when everyone else is asleep and it's not 85 degrees in the house. Darren had crashed super early, so he ended up waking up around 3 am and we hung out in the speakeasy until well into morning which was super fun. Today was my catch up on sleep day, but my cousin came down from LA to stay with my parents, so we went down for a visit, too. I find it frustrating that my own family isn't distancing and masking, but they seem to all believe that they've been quarantining and thus have no chance of exposure. We kept our masks on and kept our distance anyway, but I'm certain that I'm not alone in this frustration. There were 1030 new cases reported between Friday and Sunday which is astonishing because all the County test sites were closed on Saturday.

CoViD1-19: County & City of San Diego Briefings | San Diego Music Awards Go Virtual

My photo subjects have been super limited these days
I know Costco doesn't really count as getting out of the house, but that's as far as I made it today. Also hit Petco and Petsmart but neither carries the prescription NexGard we give Ficus so I'll check PetMeds. The press briefings were par for the course today, mostly the County and City just reiterating and clarifying what the Governor said this morning, but I have to say, Kevin Faulconer has been pretty good about seeming impartial, but over the past two weeks has just thrown that out the window. I've said it's like a game of chicken, the City and County "demanding" to open and the Governor being like, 'yo, chill out, I was gonna do that anyway' and then when the governor loosens things that he was already gonna loosen based on data then the County and the City peacock and puff their feathers and are like, 'yeah, we stood up to the Governor and got our way.' It's pretty comical if you watch it everyday like I've been doing. As things loosen, the 'whatabouts' increase, too. With haircut salons opening, 'whatabout' nail salons? With tennis courts opening, 'whatabout' doubles badminton? With churches opening, 'whatabout' gyms? People just really show their ugly self-interest and it's gross. The hardest part of the pandemic will be the cementing of the notion that a significant portion of human beings are pure garbage. I had to block one of my dad's childhood friends from Facebook today because of the stupid memes he was posting. It's not pretty out there. Links after the jump.

San Diego Music Awards 2019: Winners

I had the pleasure of attending the 2019 San Diego Music Awards on Monday night. I also had the pleasure of live-tweeting the whole thing for SoundDiego, which in retrospect, maybe I should've done as a thread? At any rate, I didn't have a chance to post much of anything yesterday, but I promised I'd share this year's winners.

You can also find the list at the official site, but I decided to post them in the order they were announced instead. When you look at it from this perspective, it makes it interesting, because while many of the performers found themselves winning the award announced immediately after their performances, it wasn't the case with everyone. So, for example, Veronica May and Casey Hensley both performed and won their categories, but the rest of the performers did not--but they're still winners in our book!!

I didn't get to schmooze nearly as much as I would've liked as I was confined to my Chromebook the whole night, but the performances were pretty great, starting with Ariel Levine and closing with Planet B, and Veronica May, Shane Hall, Casey Hensley, Vokab Company, and the Redwoods Revue all getting stage time. Of course, the event sold out with the promise of a Jason Mraz performance, which was actually some Java Joe All-Stars who wrote a special tribute to Jave Joe Flammini, with lots of allusions to smoking weed in the parking lot behind Java Joe's and the years the venue was a staple in its various locations. It was definitely a fun night and the after party at the Casbah was raging, too, but this old lady was tuckered and had to call it an early night. Full winners below and list of original nominees are after the jump.

2018 San Diego Music Awards at House of Blues

It was another great night on Monday as the San Diego Music Awards were held at the House of Blues. The air was electric, the vibe celebratory, and the beverages flowing. I got to sit with our SoundDiego crew, which was especially awesome as several of our own crew were presenters, performers, and a couple even honored with awards. You can see the full story at SoundDiego. More than the awards, however, it's super awesome to see and hear so much talent in the same room at the same time, and the after party at the Casbah was off the chain and a great chance to catch up with so many old friends. Full list of winners below and more phone cam pics after the jump.

2016 San Diego Music Award Winners

So, that's a wrap. The San Diego Music Awards took place at the House of Blues San Diego on Tuesday, March 21st. I have to be honest, it was challenging at times...from the guy who got in Darren's face about being in his seat (which I did not take kindly to) at our SoundDiego table to the fact that it started 45 minutes late because of the Tonight In San Diego episode running late...but it was a good time. I was able to get tickets for Darren and Nova to come, but with the time setbacks, they had to leave before I presented the award for best live performance. It was probably better, seeing as the madness that ensued when Schizophonics finished their set and Brian Reilly decided to smash his bass, launching half of it into Birdy Bardot's face, sending her to the hospital to make sure she wasn't concussed. Crazy drama and probably the most memorable moment of any Music Awards in their 26 years, and not one I ever hope to see repeated. I also don't feel like creating my own drama, but to the person who dissed the winners of the category they presented-- that was probably the rudest display I've ever seen and heard and you should be embarrassed to be such an asshole in someone's exciting moment.
Here's the list of winners since--if you were there---you probably couldn't hear anyway. I had an undercharged phone and left my cameras in the car, so no photos to go with this, but official winners list is below.

Hot Off The Presses: San Diego Music Awards To Return 3/21/2017

Leave it to Kevin to send a press release at 11pm on a Tuesday night...

REFORMED SAN DIEGO MUSIC AWARDS
SET TO RETURN ON MARCH 21, 2017

SDS Events is proud to announce the return of the San Diego Music Awards, the annual awards gala that recognizes the diverse achievements of the talented San Diego music community. The 26th version of San Diego's premier local music event is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, March 21, 2017. As in the past, a portion of the proceeds from the event will continue to benefit the San Diego Music Foundation, in partnership with the Taylor Guitars for Schools program.

The event has been reorganized. "After 25 years, it was time for change. I was asked to step in to once again produce the event," said awards show founder Kevin Hellman, who had retired after the 2015 event. "I'm pretty excited to once again have the opportunity to continue what we started 25 years ago. It's already been alot of fun putting the team back together. We are planning to once again produce a great event, one which will make a difference in our community."

The 2017 San Diego Music Awards will be held at House of Blues, located at 1055 Fifth Ave, in downtown San Diego - a new location for the event. The new venue will allow for both VIP seating, reserved seating and also general admission tickets. In additional to the new venue, a major change for 2017 will be a brand new award trophy. Hellman adds, "With the new venue, it's a new era for the event. It just seems to be the right time to create and present a brand new San Diego Music Award."

Over the past 25 years, awards have been presented to San Diego artists including Jason Mraz, Jewel, P.O.D., blink-182, Slightly Stoopid, Switchfoot, Pierce the Veil and countless others. And while the event has and will always focus on homegrown music, the main goal of the event is to keep music education alive in public schools in San Diego County. As such, proceeds from the San Diego Music Awards will once again be used to purchase and place "Baby Taylor" guitars into elementary, middle and high schools in San Diego County, via the non-profit San Diego Music Foundation, in partnership with El Cajon's Taylor Guitars. To date, over 75 schools have participated in the Taylor Guitars for Schools program.

Additional event details will be announced on Sunday, January 15, 2017, including performers, nominees, Lifetime Achievement Award recipient, plus several affiliated events. Event tickets will go on sale on Monday, January 16, 2017 at 3pm, via the official event website, sandiegomusicawards.com.

2015 San Diego Music Award Nominees Announced!

Earlier today, the San Diego Music Academy (of which I am a nominating/voting member), announced the 2015 San Diego Music Award Nominees. They send them out in a particular order by best of their genre or category, which the general public can vote on, and best actual song/record/recording within a genre that are voted on only by the Academy. So you can see the list in their order, here, or below, which I've taken the liberty of reorganizing by assuming I know the audience of sddialedin.com and what you really care about. There's always some bickering and bitching about categories and whatnot, but ultimately this event takes place to raise money for the San Diego Music Foundation which puts Taylor Guitars in the hands of local students.

This year's event takes place on Monday, October 5 at Humphrey's. Performers this year are Louis XIV, Big Mountain, Cody Lovaas, Berkley Hart Selis Twang, B-Side Players, Gregory Page & His Accompanists, and Lifetime Achievement Award Recipient, Peter Sprague. You can buy tickets here.

Full list of nominees are after the jump.
