The Dresden Dolls & Jason Webley @ House of Blues San Diego, 11.30.2010

Last night I had the pleasure of attending my first ever Dresden Dolls show. While familiar with the band's catalog, I've personally never really connected with their punk cabaret, but after seeing the show last night, with diehard fans singing along, wearing costumes, and feeling part of their own community, it was impossible not to feel joy and warmth at the show.

Jason Webley kicked off the night. A solo performer, he only had about a thirty minute set and with the length of his songs coupled with his banter and orchestrating the crowd for singalongs, this translated to just about 6 songs, but he was truly captivating. He started his set with just his accordion and a lifted wood stage that had mics for percussive stomping effects. He is heading of on a pretty massive tour, and will play a show on January 6 at Park Gallery, which will definitely be a show worth catching. It's a tiny space and he'll be playing with The Burning of Rome. We'll make sure to have it in next week's listings as a reminder.

The Dresden Dolls came out and gave a very dramatic theatrical punk cabaret performance. Though I had to leave mid-set, they performed for nearly two hours and gave the all ages crowd exactly what they wanted. The duo isn't on a full tour, only playing San Diego and San Francisco, so dedicated fans came from far and wide to catch the show. When I arrived at the House of Blues just before 7, the line was snaking around the block. We had planned on dinner in the restaurant, but with a 45 minute to an hour wait, wandered to San Diego Berr Company instead. When we finished, the line was still wrapped around the building, but I used my best covert operation and got in with enough time to situate myself for photos. Amanda Palmer has quite famously embraced social media, so there was an open camera policy and those of us with photo passes were never asked to leave the pit. It was crowded with 7 photographers, but they only lasted a couple songs and I waited them out and was the lone person in the pit before deciding that I'd maxed out and gotten the shots I needed. I took 300 photos, below is a slideshow of the decent ones.

R.I.P. Stimy

The local music community is closing out 2010 with some sad news. Michael Steinman, who everybody knew as Stimy, has passed away. The singer of seminal San Diego bands Inch, Sub-Society, and Congress of The Cow was a legend around town but had been living in Colorado for several years. In October, he returned to San Diego for the Livewire Anniversary party and from what I'm told, blew everyone away in a way only he could. Details of his death have not been released but word spread like wildfire across Facebook and friends and family are reeling at the shocking news.

I didn't know Stimy personally, but as someone who followed the local music scene from a very young age, I had the opportunity to see Sub-Society and Inch numerous times and loved that they were open to playing all ages shows back then. The impact that this bands had on San Diego's music development are still felt today. If more details and information on services become available, I will post them here.

NYE 2011: Ticket Giveaway for Casbah & Eleven

I was up until 7am attempting to compile the most comprehensive NYE guide that I could. My listings are all here, but being a live music oriented site, I wanted to highlight two huge shows going down.

The first is taking place at the Casbah featuring Transfer, Rafter, The Shape of Future Frames, and Low Volts in the Atari Lounge. Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door (if it doesn't sell out beforehand) and can be purchased HERE.

The other biggie is taking place at Eleven. The show features The Zeros, New Mexico, The Dabbers, Gun Runner and the Wild Weekend DJs. This show is $13 in advance or $15 at the door and can be purchased HERE.

There are plenty of other live music events that night, including a free show at Tin Can with DJ Ryan Hand, Lights On, Dudes, D/Wolves, The New Kinetics, so don't write off your usual music hotspots for your New Years Eve festivities.

The Casbah and Eleven have both generously given me a pair of guest list spots each to giveaway. Send me an email at sddialedin at gmail with the venue of your choice in the subject. Include your first and last name and a phone number. I will pick a winner for each show tomorrow evening and notify you via email. Must be 21 to enter. Tickets will be at will call and are non-transferable.

Update: Congrats to Mark A and Kevin K for winning the tickets.

Favorite Shows of 2010

For the past few weeks, I've had it in my head that I should compile some of my favorite shows and photos and records and songs of the year, but just like I hate "best of" awards, it's all very subjective and there were albums I couldn't live without and shows that changed my life and photo passes that got me super close to some amazing talent, but I still can't wrap my brain around a full post like that. Instead, I went the easy route and I went through all of the videos I've uploaded to YouTube this year and put some of them in a playlist. They're generally in order by date, though I posted the video I've watched the most first, Dawes "A Little Bit of Everything". You can click through the arrows on the right or left to jump through the videos. Most of these were shot in San Diego except for a couple in LA.

Dirty Gold Debut Show at Tin Can, 12.17.2010

I started this post a couple weeks ago and didn't realize I never got around to finishing. Sorry for that. I have been laying uber low (read:being lazy) during the holidays. On Friday (12/17) night I went to M-Theory for Fitz & The Tantrums, then went to The Pastorela at the Lyceum downtown (which was a great performance despite the asshole usher who treated us like shit), and finally got dropped off to catch Dirty Gold's debut performance at Tin Can.

When I arrived, the boys were outside with family and friends waiting to play. The three are all in high school and I have to admit that after all this time with the blog and stuff, I assume they've never heard of this site and I prefer to just hang out and do my thing and check them out so I didn't introduce myself. I just made sure I got a seat up close to capture the performance and take it in. For anyone who hasn't heard, the band has caught some blog love nationally and before even playing publicly, they were picked up by Aquarium Drunkard's Autumn Tone label. The band also got a great write-up on Crawdaddy. The show wasn't without it's bumps, and after playing two songs with vocals cutting in and out, Sarah asked them to wait, she changed the mic channel, and had them start their set all over again from the beginning, much to the pleasure of the crowd.

After the short set, and before the band could be ushered out of the 21+ bar, they were flooded with family and friends posing with them for photos on the stage, and you could here teachers and parents and friends all discussing their associations with the band. It was really cute, actually, and the boys were beaming, as they should be. I imagine you'll be hearing a lot from Dirty Gold and will have plenty of chances to see them in 2011. Below is their full set. You can click the right or left arrows to navigate the YouTube playlist.

Things To Do In San Diego: December 29, 2010

I'm really sorry I screwed up my listings last night. I've included as many NYE events as I could find in my normal sources, but if I missed anything, feel free to leave a comment and I'll update. Additionally, several venues that usually host music are taking he week off (Casbah will be closed from Saturday to Tuesday, for example), so if they're not listed, they either don't have shows or are closed...I can't always hold your hand. Venues have always been slow about posting calendars between months, so it's even worse at the end of the year. Again, if there are more shows updated this weekend, I'll add them as I find them. The final thing is that I have ad inventory available in the new year and this website is dependent on sponsorships. Hit me up if you're interested in sponsoring with banners, sidebar ads, donations, or sponsored listings.

The Wrong Trousers Return With Two End of the Year Shows

It's been a while since The Wrong Trousers have played around town, but they're playing a couple shows and I thought I'd give them an extra plug because they've always been such great kids.

First, you can see them tonight at the Casbah for The Smart Brothers Winter Jubilee featuring The Smart Brothers, Gregory Page, Sara Petite, The Wrong Trousers, John Meeks , Joanie Mendenhall, Miss Erika Davies, & Suzanne Reed. That is a pretty incredible lineup for $12...

Then on Thursday, December 30th, The Wrong Trousers will appear at Lestat's for their New Years Eve Eve Ball. They'll be joined again by The Smart Brothers and Kenny Eng.
The show is $8 and you get a prize for showing up dressed up.

Things To Do In San Diego: December 27, 2010

I hope everyone had a lovely holiday weekend...I know I sure did. It was great taking some time off and being with friends and family and still getting out to rock out, like on Christmas Eve for Exile on Kettner Boulevard which was so fun but I still never get over the Casbah having a line out the door! Last night was a blast as well. And to my holiday orphans (and one in particular---you know who you are!) I hope that San Diego didn't disappoint for the holidays.

Local Musicians Tristan Prettyman & Jason Mraz Affianced

Last week, there was a sold out Feeding The Soul Foundation benefit at the Neurosciences Institute feat. Bushwalla, Tristan Prettyman "and surprises", according to the press release. Naturally, anyone who is paying attention to the scene here would assume this meant an appearance by Jason Mraz because he's dated Tristan and is buddies with Bushwalla and they've traded appearances on their recordings many times over the years. As expected, he performed but the bigger news is that a few days later, Mraz announced his engagement to Tristan Prettyman via Twitter with a simple statement, "SHE SAID YES." Similarly, she tweeted "For Once, I am speechless" and later "i did good! holy crap! man of my dreams!!! for the rest of my life!!!" Following their tweets, the couple are camping for the holidays. You can read more about it here.

Congratulations to two well loved San Diego musicians.

Things To Do In San Diego: December 23-26, 2010

I feel so sorry for my non-Christmas celebrating friends because this weekend is dismal for options if you're not participating in the holiday. My best advice is to get out tonight and join me at West Coast Tavern. I won't begrudge you, however, if you'd rather catch Grammatical B et. al at the Casbah. I'm sure I'll be able to compile some bars that will be open this weekend for those of you who prefer not to partake in Christmas family fun, but for now, here's the short list. (Weekend listings are after the jump. If you work at a bar or restaurant open this weekend, please leave a comment or shoot me an email and I'll update. For holiday orphans, hit me up. We'll have plenty of holiday ham in Chula Vista and welcome all friends to witness our crazy family. Seriously. Nobody should be alone on Christmas and I love you all.)

A Very SD:Dialed In Christmas

I know there are a lot of holiday orphans out there. Maybe your family lives elsewhere, maybe your family is crazy (who's isn't?), maybe you don't have family to go home to...My family is spending a few days at Harrah's Rincon Casino but since I can't abandon my work or my dog, I won't be back with them until Christmas. Last week, when Jesse LaMonaca played West Coast Tavern, I was blown away by his talent and I asked if he wanted to play again this week and when he said playing would be better than being alone for the holidays, it got me thinking about how many people experience the same sentiment during the holidays.

That said, let's celebrate the warm fuzzies of the holiday and forget the stressful, crazy, and sometimes lonely season. Thursday night, join me at West Coast Tavern for some good times, good food, good friends and strong drinks as Josh Damigo and Jesse LaMonaca play some tunes. It's free, starts at 10, and is the best way I know to kick of the holiday weekend. I'll bring the mistletoe.

Time To Submit Demos For CityBeat's Great Demo Review

Peter Holslin at CityBeat asked me to mention the 2011 Great Demo Review. Instead of rewording, here's the info:

Attention musicians: CityBeat’s Great Demo Review, our annual critique of local music, is set to hit the streets on March 2, 2011—that’s right around the corner. Got a demo you’ve been passing around? A new album you’ve been hyping? A bedroom project nobody knows about?

Send us a recording and we’ll review it. We accept CDs, DVDs and LPs. Please include your project’s name, an e-mail address or phone number and your website, Bandcamp or MySpace page. You can mail submissions to CityBeat Demo Review, 3047 University Ave., Suite 202, San Diego, CA, 92104. The submission deadline is Jan. 31, 2010. Good luck!
Note, there are no digital submissions, so burn some CDs (best to provide three copies of whatever you send), and make sure to label everything with your band/project name, your website/facebook/myspace/bandcamp url, and a contact email and phone number directly on the disc as well as the packaging. This is standard for any submission to any site, but this should be especially prominent here. Band bios and press kits can also be included, and keep in mind these submissions might also be helpful when it comes time for SDMA nominations. Also keep in mind, while it's called the "Demo Review", full pressed vinyl, CDs and DVDs are welcome.

Fitz & The Tantrums- M-Theory Instore, 12.17.2010

I've been doing my best to refrain from talking about the rain because smalltalk about the weather makes me wanna poke my eye with a fork, but this has been a pretty extreme storm. A little rain is one thing and naturally everyone else is a shitty driver, but this really is a big deal...anytime the conditions surpass what our infrastructure can handle is when you see homes flooded, cars swept into creeks that normally don't exist, and massive sinkholes, and nevermind our refusal to house the homeless or provide adequate shelters. Just like anyone, when it rains I just wanna stay home in my pajamas, but then I'd miss out on the good stuff, like on Friday afternoon when I went to see Fitz & The Tantrums live at M-Theory. They brought the whole band, which I guess makes sense because they can't really break down their music acoustically, but I was surprised nonetheless. We had circled the blocks at least 5 times before finding parking 3 blocks away, so we walked in late and I immediately got to recording. Here's what you missed.

The Silent Comedy Participates in "Working Class" Documentary

The Silent Comedy's Brothers Grimm, Josh and Jeremiah, have been participating in a documentary called Working Class that is being shot by Jeffrey Durkin of Breadtruck Films. The film is loosely structured around Charles Dickens' A Tale Of Two Cities, and focuses on the artwork of Mike Maxwell and Mike Giant, as well as their respective cities, San Diego and San Francisco. In addition to the brothers' interviews, The Silent Comedy's music will score the San Diego portion of the film.

We love supporting, and collaborating with, different artists, especially our good friend Mike Maxwell. Check out a trailer for the film, and some screenshots below. Stay tuned to hear when the finished product will be available for viewing!

FM 94/9 Holiday Hootenanny 12.11.2010

Earlier this week, my photos from the Holiday Hootenanny were put up on SoundDiego, but I've got some more and haven't had the chance to write about the whole show. It was definitely a fun night. I took my friend Steve to the show, mostly because he's really easygoing and since I knew I'd be taking photos, he would be on his own for a lot of the night. What I didn't know is that he'd eaten a giant pot brownie, so within an hour of our arrival, he was telling me that we'd have to cab home. So much for my designated driver...at that point I pretty much left him to watch the show as I bounced back and forth between the photo pit and the VIP lounge. There was a little taco spread and they were serving complimentary wine and Guiness Black Lager, which is apparently test marketing in San Diego. It was good, but I'd gone big on Friday and wasn't really into drinking too heavily, so I took it easy and mostly just caught up with friends between bands.

Tokyo Police Club kicked off the night and sounded awesome on the big stage. It was fun shooting with awesome lighting so I just went with it.

Sleigh Bells was next onstage and though I was looking forward to seeing them since they were the only band on the bill that I hadn't seen before but I just wasn't feeling it. Their backing tracks were far more complex than their actual live performance. The lighting was mainly red lights and strobe so my photos really aren't worth posting. I spend most of the three songs in the pit trying to assess what part of the performance was actually live. To be honest, it didn't feel like much of it was live. Maybe that's fine for a club, but at a show like this, I want live music. I went back upstairs until The Temper Trap were on.

I've seen them twice before and this was better than the other two for me, maybe because of the energy of the crowd, but it also might be because this performance felt a little more diverse...it wasn't that alto vox the whole way through the set.

I was really happy to see Against Me! again. The last time I saw the band was a few years back at Warped Tour, and since they played back to back with Rise Against, my brain had confused the two, but I really loved Against Me's latest record, White Crosses, and to be honest and slightly sexist, I really wanted some manly rock. I definitely got that with their performance and found myself forgetting to take pictures because I was so into the band's performance and Tom Gabel just really does it for me. He's super sexy and owns the stage when he's on it.

Between bands I went back upstairs. The VIP area traditionally shuts down before the headlining band, so I had a couple quick beers. While standing around with friends, a guy started talking to me. He was hilarious and told me that he has snuck into the VIP area (twice) and the second time his friends were too afraid to follow. He had a fun energy, but the band was about to start to I had to bail and get downstairs and slipped into the elevator as it was closing. The Black Keys are always fantastic and you just get the feeling that they love San Diego and that they love FM 94/9. They had also got their Grammy nominations just a few days before so there was this infectious energy in the arena.

After the three songs, I was wandering and bumped back into Patrick, the sneaky kid in the VIP area, and he convinced me that we had to SEE the show. I cannot tell you the last time I was at a big show and actually maneuvered through a crowd, but within 10 minutes, that's exactly what we were doing. We're on the floor surrounded mostly by kids and worked out way all the way back up to the front. It was hot and stinky and sweaty and I had crowdsurfers passing over my head and it was awesome. Patrick turned to be quite sheisty and was telling people all kinds of shit...that I was some reporter and needed to get "my story" and whatever and whispering to me, "just go with it." I did and the crowd was spastic and we got carried around as it shifted and though I felt like I'd been hit by a bus the next day, I felt like a kid when I was in it.

Things worked out in the end, thankfully Natalie offered to drive Steve and I back home and I closed my night out at the Ken Club.

I took almost 400 pictures but nobody wants to see that many photos, so here's a little slideshow of some of the rest of my shots. Huge thanks to FM 94/9 for another great show and I look forward to whatever is around the corner for 2011.

Delta Spirit, Darker My Love, The Fling @ House of Blues, 12.10.2010

On Friday night, Delta Spirit played the final stop of their tour at the House of Blues. A bit of a homecoming show, it was a great night. It feels like the last few times I've seen the band were daytime shows, so it was nice seeing them at night, rocking out with cool lighting and jack-and-coke infused energy. Darker My Love and The Fling kicked off the night, making for a solid bill from top to bottom. I had one of those nights where the guest list was messed up, so while it was sorted out, I grabbed a quick dinner at The Local...hadn't been there in a while and their pesto tortellini was as good as ever. By the time we were done, the box office situation was handled and we made it into the venue on time for the start of the show. Here are a few pics, with the full slideshow at the bottom.

KPRI Presents Pete Yorn @ Bernardo Winery, 12.14.2010

Last night, KPRI hosted yet another free private listener show, this time at Bernardo Winery. Having never been there, I didn't know what to expect, but it was absolutely beautiful, with little village shops all dressed up for the holidays. If you have a chance, they have "Holiday Nights" from 4-8pm on December 16-19, with music and carolers and free family friendly activities.

I've seen Pete Yorn numerous times over the years and in his early days, I was mildly obsessed. I still have a VHS tape of the a taping I went to at the Knitting Factory in LA that was featured on HBO's Reverb (where you can see the back of my head in the front row for most of the show despite having the flu). Though I'm not quite so obsessed these days, I do love seeing him play live and it was really nice to see him in such a pretty space with a couple hundred people enjoying the brisk night. The performance was fantastic, though my butt froze while sitting on the ground to film. The entire set is below (click the right and left arrows to see the full playlist). The videos are in HD, so make sure you click for the highest resolution for the best picture. Get tickets for his show at the House of Blues on April 9. For more info, you can check out his site. As always, if you want to be invited to the private listener shows, you have to register to be a FREEq to receive email notifications.

Video: Grand Tarantula "I'm Not Gonna Let You Go"

Grand Tarantula is easily one of my favorite new local bands this year and I got the chance to see them again last week at the Casbah. With tons of energy and a very loyal following, the show was a lot of fun and Marshall was nice enough to turn up the lights. They recently put out a 7" on Pretty Awesome Records with awesome art by Kelsey Brookes that benefits the Keep A Breast Foundation. You can buy the record here.

Two of SD's top instrumental bands shared a night at the Soda Bar. Mattson 2 set the stage with their groovy surf rock.

Video: Grammatical B "Rules & Laws"

A few weeks ago, Ben Johnson, aka Grammatical B, invited friends to come to the Casbah for the filming of a video for "Rules & Laws", his take on bar behavior after years behind the bar at the Casbah. I missed out on the taping, but they put it together rather quickly and it's now up for everyone to see.

Douchebags beware! A scathing send up of people who do not get the art of ordering a drink in a bar!

PLATINUM

Atlantic City - Our faithful friend and stage technician, Platinum Tom gets escorted from the stage of the dance floor at the Showboat Casino. "DJ needs room!", they say. It appeared that his milkshake brought all the security to the yard as there was evidently no more space for the Double Barrel Platinum Chicken Strut. This was post gambling all per diems at the craps table…some winning, some losing, all falling victim to the free jack and coke. Ah, Casinos…they really have the science.

~GENO'S

Philadelphia, PA

Before our show at The Electric Factory, with time to kill, we decided to head out on a search for the city's quintessential cheese steak. After parking, we ran across this mural by Shepard Fairey.
A reminder of home was cool to see in a random neighborhood in Philly.
On to Geno's. There was a line and we were told it was worth it, so we waited it out. I could sense the urgency of getting your shit together before you got to the window by the orders taken from the customers in front of me. , (side note - the window had stickers all over it that read things like, "I'M MAD AS HELL AND I WANT MY COUNTRY BACK!" and "THIS IS AMERICA. When ordering, SPEAK ENGLISH!!!" They also served FREEDOM FRIES). "You're next, GO!" "I'll take a Philly cheese steak, please."…"GIMME A WHIZZ WHIZZ WITH ONION! NEXT!!" I was fortunately able to sort my order in a speedy fashion. Rosey, on the other hand was not so lucky. He got yelled at twice and stood like a deer in the headlights. Philly patience has about as long of a shelf life as a fart in the wind. I think someone actually stepped in and ordered for Rosey as he stood there. Amazing.

The cheese steak was just OK but the hot sauce was extremelyfuckinghot and nearly burned my esophagus to a shredded ribbon. We'll hit Pat's next time.

The show at the Electric Factory was a good one and very well received. Great venue and guess what food was served after…yep.
Andy ate three that day. AMERICUH, FURCK YEAHRRR!!!
